AC/DC

What more can I say that hasn't already been said? This is one of the greatest hard rocking albums of all time. AC/DC sounds like they are playing on top of a cliff as lightning is striking in the background. I don't need to say any more. Buy it already.

The entire album is good, head banging, body rocking fun that lifts you out of your chair and onto the floor to shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it! I love all kinds of music. My heart, though, belongs to rock, and this is the bruising, sexy rock that I missed during my R & B and Rap years. But, I'm Back...In Black!

AC/DC Back in Black will forever be the greatest Album of all times! Even my kids who are just tweening and coming of age agree! This album is addictive, and brings back soo many happy, fond, memories!

Actually, Led Zeppelin's catalog surpasses any other band's in terms of musical quality, but for an album that is focused on balls to the wall hard rock, Back in Black is IT. Nearly every song is killer, no filler. Well, for me "Let Me Put My Love Into You Baby" and "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" are kind of lame, but the strength of the other tracks just demolishes any of the album's weaknesses. Everybody knows the greatness of "Hells Bells", the title song and "You Shook Me...", but I think an overlooked song is "Have A Drink On Me"...THE GREATEST HARD ROCK SONG EVER! I thought that when I was 14 (when I bought the album) and still think that today (I'm now 41). A bluesy, killer intro riff, catchy chord changes...and that passage from where it builds up after the solo into that SCORCHING last verse (kind of like a bridge at the end of the song)...KICKS A*S!!! That song alone is worth twice the price of the whole album!

So if you're only going to buy one AC/DC album, this is it, hands down. 20 million buyers of this disc are not wrong.

This is the Quintessential AC/DC album. Anyone who has heard an AC/DC song has probably heard one of the many hits from this album. I haven't gone to a wedding or Company Xmas party(with a DJ) where I haven't heard at least "You Shook Me All Night Long"!

In my opinion, this is the best AC/DC album. "Back In Black" was more popular because it had a hit single, but this album had Bon Scott. He will always be the singer who was born to sing for this band. What a tragedy. Even though he died soon after, I really do not think AC/DC could have sounded any better after this record,even with him. They really got their "sound" solidified here. What I like best though is that it is really fun to listen to all the way through. I can listen to any song and instantly get in a good mood.

Did you know that as of today "Back in Black" is the 2nd best worldwide selling album of all time behind "Thriller"? Well, Highway to Hell laid the foundation for that record-breaker with ridiculous solos, steadily increasing beats & the great writing of Malcolm & Bon. Listen loudly...

Another classic AC/DC album. This is actually AC/DC`s sixth studio album and the one that broke them in the U.S and world wide. It is a brilliant album but what let`s it down a tiny bit for me is the production is a bit polished, but i suppose it had to be done to please some American record company executives. The album Dirty Deeds still hadn`t been released in America even after this album went gold in America. Dirty deeds only got released in America after Bon died and it went higher in the charts than Highway to hell did. Someone at Atlantic records just didn`t have a clue did he? The front cover artwork is different to the Australian version of this album and i prefer the Australian cover as it has more details in it (fire and a bass guitar fret board that looks like a highway/road. It`s a bit strange because Lynyrd Skynyrd`s final album cover artwork, before singer Ronnie died in a plane crash, had fire on it too, but was later changed after the plane accident. Another story i`ve heard is that AC/DC, who were/are friends with Lynyrd Skynyrd, got offered to fly on the same plane with Lynyrd Skynyrd when it crashed, but Malcolm`s wife didn`t want to go on it. Although this album is a bit polished it still is a great loud rocking album and any AC/DC fan (old and new) would still love this album. It has some great classics on here. The title track is my favorite and Beatin round the Bush is a bit of a more faster paced song, almost to the speed of early eighties Motorhead. The last song on the album "Night Prowler" is about sneaking into your girlfriend`s house while her parents are asleep and making love to her. It`s got nothing to do with that Richard night stalker person, and what he though the song meant.

It took me a while to buy this album. Don't get me wrong...I love this band...in fact I consider them to be the best rock band of all time and only behind The Beatles as far as all musical acts are concerned. Why this trepidation? Well, as a kid, I was used to buying an AC/DC album and knowing that there would be a couple of great songs on it and that I would discover some good songs that I hadn't heard before. With "Highway to Hell", I only really knew the title track...sure, it's great, but does this album have anything else decent on it? Yes. Here's my pick of the best tracks on this album:

Highway to Hell: THE classic track off of this album. AC/DC is yet to release a fully fledged greatest hits album ("Who made who" comes closest to this), but the title track is an automatic selection of any hypothetical compilation. AC/DC has rarely come close to the celebration of living life hard and to its fullest as in this song. It's a classic for its grating, typically AC/DC guitar riff/introduction. *N.B. an ANNOYING feature of this song is that the riff is lopsided...if you listen to it on headphones, the audio for the riff is tilted to the right hand speaker. Oddly, when I heard this song on the radio, the 'tilt' was on the left hand side. This suggests to me that the remaster was flawed. One of the GREAT things about AC/DC classics is how you get one guitar crunching out a riff and then getting joined by another guitar on the other speaker. As it stands, the sound on this song is almost as bad as those early, faux stereo songs the Beatles used to churn out (and that's because they really didn't have proper stereo when they started out). Really, I see this 'tilt' as a mistake which should get fixed. It might be less noticeable if you listen to it on loudspeakers.

There really aren't any other 'classics' on this album, but of the rest, the most solid songs are:

Walk all over you: has a promising intro...moody. This song does seem to have some unintended distortion on the guitar. I like the lead guitar work in this song as well as the backing vocals, which is very good, in AC/DC's signature, laddish way.

Touch to much: I must have heard this song somewhere along the line as I always thought it could be a good song. Probably didn't hear it on the radio, as ONLY the title track seems to get played...at least nowadays, here in Australia. Good stereo stage...must stop whingeing about the lack of this on the title track! Excellent backing vocals too.

The two songs above are the kind of songs that grow you. In other words they might not have the immediate sex appeal of classic AC/DC songs but they are the kind of songs that would be welcome on any compilation by this band.

The last song of particular interest on this album for me is:

Night Prowler: lead singer Bon Scott sounds particularly phlegmy, especially for the intro. Lead guitar is REALLY soulful in sound here. I like the backing vocals here too, and it's not just the typical echo-ing which the band is so fond of...they get their own lines too. Lyrical construction in this song is good too. It's quite menacing. Apparently it's not meant to be, according to the band, but it is. Think I heard that this song is there version of the Rolling Stones' "Midnight rambler"...and after just now looking at the lyrics to that song, they are BOTH menacing...so, I don't see how AC/DC can get criticised for a song like this and not the Stones!

Anyway, despite my initial misgivings on this album, I think it is an essential purchase. This is pretty much the first AC/DC album where I've noticed that they actually do have a bass guitar player...it's quite noticeable in songs like "Shot down in flames" and "Love hungry man".

For me, AC/DC are the greatest guitar act of all time. There are Malcolm Young's crunching riffs on rhythm guitar, and brother Angus' equally exceptional lead guitar work...whether the songs be rock, rock'n'roll, boogie or whathaveyou. To the uninitiated who claim that this band has only ever released one song, multiple times, this puts the lie to that claim. There is a lot of variety on this album.

The boys' and Bon Scott's lyric writing is also in exceptional form here. In some songs the lyrics are a bit dated...e.g. "Night Prowler" lightens the tone at the end with Bon referencing American comedian Robin Williams' character "Mork" from the tv show "Mork and Mindy". You have to be of a certain age to get that ad-libbery. Bon also has some fun at the end of "Shot down in flames". The boys don't take themselves too seriously, which is good.

AC/DC was virtually unknown when this album was released. In fact, I don't even know if it was released at all in the U.S. in 1976. This is the one that started it all though, and the sound here is extremely stripped back compared to the more slick productions of the 80's. Bon Scotts voice is unique beyong unique, and what can I say about Angus that hasn't been said. A true guitar god in the making here. It's easier for me to pick out the one song I might tend to skip over rather than all the ones I love, and that would be "Little Lover." It's a bit too slow for my taste. "The Jack" also feels draggish but since that was a concert favorite so I usually listen to it. Unfortunately, the remastered version does not contain any bonus tracks, but the booklet and packaging are superb. Great photos and retro-style look!

The first American release from the sneering and swaggering AC/DC was a torn together pastiche of two Australian albums with a new cover, but that doesn't stop "High Voltage" from giving serious zap power. AC/Dc had already figured out exactly what route (Highway to Hell, maybe) they were taking and began to blast their way to the top. Even with the heavy dose of filler that's on this CD, there's still no way to deny the visceral force of the best songs here.

There's the statement of purpose in "It's a Long Way To The Top," the rock- as-street-gang chant with "TNT" and the dirty joke as blues number when Bon Scott sneers "She got The Jack." Behind it all is Angus Young's volume blasting but deceptively dexterous guitars and one of rock's best rhythm keepers, drummer Phil Rudd. (Bassist Mark Evans would split by the time Let There Be Rock came out.) Above the fray, Scott wailed like a banshee thug, becoming one of those rare rock singers who didn't just overwhelm, he actually seemed like a true threat to the mortals of society. It made the standout tracks hit with such brute force that "High Voltage" was impossible to ignore.

"High Voltage" did suffer from the filer tracks and (like the early Kiss albums) non-beefy production. However, the band improved past the juvenile postures fast. By the time they hit Powerage, AC/DC had mastered their outrageous power and were cutting classic albums. And much like Kiss, AC/DC were Hell-Bent on world domination, making no bones about the fact that they were going to be rock-stars, and you'd better stay out of their way.

This album is virtually the same as the Australian version of the TNT album. Around this time, 1975, AC/DC in Melbourne Australia had a very big skinhead following. They`d come to their shows wanting loud and tough rock`n`roll, and AC/DC would deliver all the time. That`s why, i think, this album has a very loud and tough sound. There`s nothing nice and fluffy about this album, it`s just loud guitars and loud vocals. I personally think this could be their best album. The vander and young production is fantastic and they really captured the AC/DC live pub sound on this record. I never saw AC/DC in Australia in the seventies as i was too young but many older people here that i`ve met have told me that this album TNT/High Voltage sounds very similar to what they sounded live in Melbourne pubs. TNT is probably my favorite song on the album. It`s only 3 chords and it works brilliantly. AC/DC were the first band to chant Oi Oi Oi in this song and they were the first rock band to use bagpipes in a rock song (long way to the top), 20 years before great bands like Dropkick Murphys tried it. I don`t know why bagpipes aren`t used more in rock music. They sound heaps better than trumpets or saxaphones. This album helped introduce AC/DC to British and European audiences who loved it as much, maybe more, than Australians.

This record's original title was NOT High Voltage. It's title was TNT. Somewhere somebody decided to change it. High Voltage had a red cover with a dog urinated up against a transformer behind a barbed wire fence and contained that classic, drunken sing along song: 'Big Balls'. I think High Voltage has been renamed Jailbreak '74 (they took Jailbreak off Dirty Deeds, where it was the last song. and put it on High Voltage and renamed High Voltage). It's not good to tamper with these thing!

Personally I would consider one of AC/DC's best albums- the stand out tune is 'Long way to the shop (if you wanna sausage roll)' (as it is known to old school australian AC/DC fans). Even the old school video of them driving down some street in Melbourne(?) on an old Bedford flatbed rocking out to this song (including bagpipe players in full highland gear) is supreme. TNT and High Voltage are also fantastic tracks. Other highlghts include Rocker and The Jack. Seriously good fun!

TNT was traditionally, so it seemed in Australia to me, the second AC/DC record new fans bought after Back In Back as it highlighted AC/DC in a very accessible way through their powerful, tight and catchy riffs. It's hard to find a tune on this record that isn't good. Probably school days is the worst. If I not mistaken, it also contains a re-recording of AC/DC's first recorded song with original singer George Evans (who I met backstage one Saturday night in '89- needless to say he didn't seem to like Angus much): Can I sit next to you girl.

SO buy it, crank it up, raise your first and shout 'oi' and appreciate music that sounds as good now as it did back in 1975. Maybe even better...

AC/DC is a true power rock band. Every song on there electrifying debut is rocking all with the same basic rock beat and cool guitar riffs. Starting off with Its A Long Way To The Top it just goes from there every song on here is rocking(well except maybe the bluesy Little Lover) But still the album is AC/DC when they were young as it says in the booklet. Lock up your daughters because this album is a non stop rock thriller and is perfect for any person who loves basic rock n roll and not concept albums.

AC/DC's 1977 release, "Let There Be Rock", is one of the best AC/DC albums they've ever made for one reason, Its good high voltage rock n roll with no stopping and non stop rocking, and more... Let There Be Rock is filled with pounding drums, great guitar riffs, and cool singing which makes this album a must have for a rock fan. This album starts off with the bluesy, "Go Down", which by its name you can obviously tell what it's about.... Go Down opens this album and has a great riff, Its a good song that they can jam on, great song. Then the album rolls on too track two, "Dog Eat Dog", another cool AC/DC song with a great riff, and one of the only AC/DC songs too contain different drumming besides the basic rock beat. Dog Eat Dog is another AC/DC song that is often forgotten about along with, "Go Down". Things then really start rocking on track three, "Let There Be Rock" which is the albums main song and title. Let There Be Rock has probaly the best riff on this whole album and is the best song on the whole album because of what its about and that its just a great rocking song. To prove how intense the song Let There Be Rock is during the recording of it Angus Young's amplifier caught on fire midway through recording of the song yet the producers told him too keep on playing, by the time the song was over the amp head was a melted pile of wires. Things just keep rocking on this album with the fourth track, "Bad Boy Boogie", which contains another great riff too it and beat. Another classic AC/DC song and contains probaly the second best riff on the whole album. Then the fifth track, "Problem Child" was actullay released on the album, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, but was for some reason re realeased on this album.... Still a great song with a great riff. Then the six song, "Overdose", is another one of those early forgotten AC/DC songs but is still a great song. It contains a weird guitar intro too it but quickly gets into the main part of the song with another great riff, but unfortantley that song is another forgotten AC/DC song. Then the seventh song, "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be", was a concert staple for AC/DC in the late 70s along with, Let There Be Rock, Bad Boy Boogie, and Problem Child, anyways back to the point. Hell Aint A Bad Place To Be also contains another great riff and is just a good AC/DC song. Then the final track Whole Lotta Rosie is another AC/DC live concert staple even today, contains a cool riff and for once a different drum beat. All in all AC/DC's Let There Be Rock you cannot miss and at just nine dollars it is defently worth the money.

Very few have the hard hit that these guys produce. Excellent riffs, hard hittin drum beats, Bon Scott was a real power house without a doubt. If you love rock & roll, you must put this one in your collection. 5 STARS baby..

First off, I want to comment on the difference between the original Australian version and this international version. As is the case with all of the Bon Scott era albums before Powerage, the original releases are, in every case, superior to the international versions. I have this current remastered release, but when I listen to this at home, I always play the Aussie version. Crabsody in Blue is an awesome track, and I already have Problem Child on Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

Now that that's out of the way, this is the best rock album ever made as far as I'm concerned. I love the Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, Sabbath, and all those guys, but AC/DC had 2 things that those other bands didn't.

1) pure focus and drive - All they wanted to to was to rock, and that's all they've ever done.
2) Bon f'ing Scott - This guy became one with the song he was singing at all times, and all of AC/DC's albums with him are essential listening for any rock fan.

Let There Be Rock in particular shows off Scott in the deepest levels of his singing trance. His vocals surge through this album full of awesome catchy riffs that tear through the whole album like a bolt of lightning that doesn't want to end. Angus Young also shines on this album, giving some of his most playful and shredding solos ever.. especially on the title song, which is the most electric song I think I've ever heard, and is a brilliant tribute to the soul of rock and roll, which these guys come as close to embodying as any band I've ever heard.

In short, this is an aptly named band, and a perfectly named album. Anyone who is into rock should own and know this album.

And there was rock indeed.

A stronger album from AC/DC, it has a few classic songs and many quintessential riffs. Both guitars are starting their amps on fire and the steady beats sound like gigantic waves crashing into the Great Barrier Reef (of Rock!). Bon Scott may have not had all of his original teeth, but he's not afraid to lose `em again if you gotta problem with it. A classic album, their first with the infamous AC/DC logo.

1) Go Down - 1st song on this great album? Not the best initial impression. Goes nowhere forever and repeats, repeats, repeats. About what you think it's about.
2) Dog Eat Dog - Dogs n' cats does not a rock song make, but don't tell that to AC/DC. Not too great, but I could listen to it if I had to.
3) Let There Be Rock - 2nd best song here. A history lesson from the boys. "Tchaikovsky had the news." The video is ridiculous. Bon's a googly-eyed priest.
4) Bad Boy Boogie - Not the worst...but close. The riffs aren't great and the chorus kinda comes and goes. Plus I hate the moniker `bad boy'.
5) Problem Child (US version) - In the top 3. Originally "Crabsody In Blue" on the Australian version. This song was on the Dx5 album. This song fits the album's tone better. Nasty riff.
6) Overdose - Slow going, but picks up steam. They find the pocket nicely. Nothing too exciting happens, but Angus goes off a little bit. Also a good build-up at the end.
7) Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be - Top 3, if not for PC. More of a groover. Good solo into the bridge. If Bon's in hell, I hope he's having fun.
8) Whole Lotta Rosie - Best song here. One of the first I heard of theirs. Love the back-n-forth breakdown. Angus set off smoke alarms with this one.

Terrific album. I haven't heard it played as an album-side since high school. Still one of the best.

When this album was origionally released, AC/DC was virtually unknown in the U.S. With only one other album under their belt, DIRTY DEEDS was recorded in the same vain as HIGH VOLTAGE. High energy rock and roll only the way AC/DC can do it. The lyrics this time around, however, proved to be too controversial for American ears. Banned in the U.S. until they were household names in 1980, DIRTY DEEDS and it's naugthy songs about big balls and love at first feels was rock and roll's best kept secret. Every AC/DC album rocks, but songs like "Dirty Deeds," "Rocker" and "Problem Child" ramain as some of the best AC/DC music ever made.

but this is a good record. It's dynamic. "Dirty Deeds" & "Ride On" are my favorites. AC/DC [like most bands] was better when they were young. Bon Scott had a firmer grasp on the human condition than Brian Johnson, though both wrote a lot of songs about poon, ballzzz, getting drunk, & not being nice all the time. Back in Black and DDDDC are the only AC/DC records I can listen to... both have just enough soul and hooks to keep me interested. DDDDC is Angus's best work.

The original version of this brilliant album came out in Australia in 1976. I was just a nipper living in Melbourne Australia, where AC/DC were based at the time, when i first heard this album. I use to see and hear AC/DC alot on music shows like Countdown and even in the news as they were causing a furore in Australia. They were not a punk band and they never will be a punk band but i can see why, at the time this album came out, that they were mistaken for being a punk band. This album is raw and dirty rock`n`roll at its best and some songs were banned from the radio down here (Big Balls, Ain`t no fun). Believe it or not but the same outrage that the Sex Pistols were causing in England, AC/DC was causing the same outrage here in Australia. They were making headlines in our mainstream media like "the dirtiest group in town" and a headline from a newspaper from 1975 saying "Australia has punk bands too." Yes, from 1975. The band would travel from town to town in Country Victoria only to be met with protests from outraged parents not wanting them to play in they town. They had the media and police constanly follow them. And many complaints were called into television staions when AC/DC were aired. Despite all this the Australians loved them and AC/DC soon became a monster in Australia. They out grew this country and the whole world deserved to see and hear this talent from Australia. Unfortunately some mindless idiot/s from their American record label, Atlantic, didn`t like this classic album and they decided not to release it. Had this album been released in America when it first came out AC/DC`s success would have come alot sooner than 1979 (highway to hell), and maybe Bon might still be alive today as the band had to then work alot harder and longer to obtain their world wide success. This would have obviously cause alot of strain and stress on Bon and the band. Bon, i think, needed a bit of a break after the highway to hell tour to sort out his problems. But, unfortunately, the music industry, especially in America, is a tough market to crack and they want up and coming bands to constantly work towards their success. This version of Dirty Deeds is different to the Australian version. For some reason this version hasn`t got "Jailbreak" on it and Jailbeak`s arguably AC/DC`s best song. There is a different song on this release too, a song called "love at first feel" which was only released as a single here in Australia. Love at first feel wasn`t even recorded at the dirty deeds session. It was recorded, along with about 4 other songs, in between dirty deeds and Let there be Rock. Hopefully these songs will one day see the light of day. Some already have. Another song recorded from this love at first feel session was called Carry me Home and only ended up on the b-side of the single Dog Eat Dog, and only released in Australia. It`s a great song too so hopefully it will see the light of day again. Dirty Deeds is, i think one of AC/DC`s best album. It has everything an AC/DC fan loves. Loud chunky guitars, great guitar solos, brilliant and very clever lyrics by Bon (Big Balls comes to mind) and even something a bit different, a ballad called Ride on which is up there as one of AC/DC`s top ten best songs. Long live Bon Scott and long live AC/DC.

One thing that is great about Dirty Deeds and AC/DC in their early years is that they seemed more willing to try new things and most of the time it worked. The main reason I like this one the best is because not many(maybe 2) of the songs sound the same and they are all great. A little history here: thre original realease from 1976 contained only 7 of the 9 songs here while "Rocker" and "Love At First Feel" were not. "Rocker" ws from TNT and "Love At First Feel" was a studio leftover. They replaced "Jailbreak" and "R.I.P(Rock In Peace)" but with the later two on the album it is by far the best one. Oh, one more thing, its filled with the darkest stuff Bon Scott wrote.

"A CUSTOMER" pretty much hit the nail on the head, very good review. I would only like to add that the start of the editorial review is an insult: "While Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap sounds like every other AC/DC album..." yes there is some merit in this review but not a lot. This album does stand out as one of AC/DC's best ever for a few reasons:

Bon Scott is definitely the master of AC/DC legacy and Brian does not compare despite the great debut Back in Black. So, what work makes this stand out?

Bon started to mature as did the whole band and began to actually set themselves apart as having some diversity in their song writing and sound on this effort. While "A CUSTOMER" pretty much gave a great song for song review simply and straight the fact remains this album has NOTABLE distinction from song to song unlike their debut High Voltage which is raunchy and fun it is very sophomoric in not just the ridiculously misogynistic lyrics but also basic raunchy hard rock riffs that accompany them.

Dirty Deeds stands out as a great leap for the band in many ways for me; they have great memorable songs on this album even if not as well know today as they were 20 years ago but they are all distinctly different lyrically and musically even if Bon was still the overly macho man and often sexist-pig persona this was part of his act and he was living up to his image of a larger than life rock star and this never changed until the day he died. Nonetheless with the exception of the giant lyrical wart "Big Balls" which is not a bad song musically but certainly the worst on the album and maybe of the Bon Scott era but there are songs that have punch, emotion and more than anything a song that to me shows what AC/DC could have been had Bon lived longer on what to me is possibly their best (or at least most unique) song ever RIDE ON which is worth the money alone. Angus is a great guitar player and often overlooked as such but listen to this song and while the simplicity in musicianship is apparent so is the depth of emotion in his playing on this unmistakable blues song that is a huge departure from anything they ever did. Anytime anyone tells me AC/DC never did anything worthwhile I play this song for them which still gives me chills today and has since the first time I really listened to it after I started to play guitar myself and appreciate diversity in music as a mid-teen.

There are other great songs too making this the #1 AC/DC I would recommend to anyone curious or just wanting to get acquainted with the REAL AC/DC.

Long live the larger than life rocker Bon Scott who I loved growing up (even though I was six when this album was released)...Ride On Bon!

Great CD,love the music, love the band, hate their bad attitude with I tunes. I understand they have problems with the music industry but why punish the fans?

This rating for this CD is within the context of comparing it to Back in Black, possibly the greatest hard rock album of all time. Let's face it, AC/DC set a standard so high with that album that even they haven't been able to match it since. Thunderstruck is by far the best song on Razors Edge--a great song, too--as good as most of the songs on Back in Black. And the title song, Razors Edge, is pretty good. But the rest, ehh--they don't quite cut it for me. I must say that when a band hones on one specific sound in one specific type of music with almost no variation in those areas (which I commend them for), the world's greatest songwriter will struggle with coming up with ALL KILLER SONGS on a dozen or so albums over the space of 20-25 years. AC/DC were truly inspired and full of magic when they wrote and recorded the Highway to Hell and Back in Black albums, but I think time has proven that those two efforts were their peak. I think it's great that they're still doing it, sticking to their guns music-wise and everything, but if you're expecting their more contemporary releases to rival Back In Black, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed, including Razors Edge, unless you're not quite as picky as I am, which I admit I am....

Why do I say that this album is a return to form for the band? Well, as a child I had bought a few of their albums and always found at least two songs that I considered 'classics' as well as 'discovering' other songs on those albums which were good or fun or had some sort of appeal. Those albums would be "T.N.T" (which I bought new in Australia recently, after hearing that it was no longer being made...having been replaced by the US version of it, "High voltage", which had minor track variations), "Dirty deeds done dirt cheap" (I mean the original Australian release, not the US version, which, for some reason, omitted one of their all time great songs, "Jailbreak". Go figure) and, of course, "Back in black", which is my pick as the greatest album of all time in the pop/rock field.

After these classic albums, AC/DC seemed to go downhill...releasing albums which you would consider yourself lucky to hear one great song, and unlucky if no song was great. Those kind of albums would include "Flick of the switch" and "Fly on the wall". In other words, those albums didn't have a song which you might want to include in any proposed compilation album by the band...or, if you did, you might change your mind years later, thinking that the song didn't have the legs that you thought it did.

So, despite knowing that this album had two songs that I really liked on it, I finally took the plunge years later and bought it...probably due to the discounting of this band's back catalogue at the time. What can I say about it? It has two classic songs on it and is otherwise rock sollid. Really, that's all you need to give an AC/DC album 5 stars, which is what I'm doing.

Here are my picks as the best songs on the album-

The classics-

Thunderstruck: combines the best elements of AC/DC...really cool lead guitar, laddish backing vocals and growling lead singing by Brian Johnson, who seems to be channeling ex lead-singer Bon Scott (who tragically died whilst still in the band).

Money talks: another classic AC/DC song and sound. Great intro and riff with a great chorus and backing vocals. I'd always mishear the song lyric as "Love before the money" but it turns out Brian is singing "Love me for the money". So, this song is about hookers. It's a theme the band returns to in this album...perhaps they sing too much about hookers in this album? The other song to do with hookers on this album is "Got you by the balls".

There really aren't any bad tracks on this album, but the best of the rest are-

The razors edge: for me, this song breaks the mould, to a certain extent. It doesn't have the typical AC/DC sound. It's quite moody...adventurously so. Reminded me a bit of, say, Metallica via Black Sabbath, or Aerosmith's song "Living on the edge".

Are you ready: a good, rowdy pub-rock song with a strong chant by the backing vocalist of the band.

Let's make it: a nice riff from Malcolm on rhythm guitar and good melodic singing by Brian...more melodic than is usual for him.

If you dare: has a noticeable bass guitar (unusual for the band) and the song sounds a little bit like an Aerosmith song, with its boogie riff. The backing vocalists chanting is good too.

Of all the AC/DC albums that I've heard (about half a dozen), this one has the most noticeable bass guitar. In fact, I would have been hard pressed to know that AC/DC actually had a bass guitarist if it wasn't for an album like this.

Like I said, this album doesn't really have any bad songs on it...okay, some people may find "Mistress for Christmas" not pretty, but then again, others may like its playfulness. It utilises 'jingle bells' as found in Christmas songs.

This album has all the qualities of a five star AC/DC album: at least two great songs and some other songs which are a pleasure to listen to. Essential purchase.

If you like music more towards the heavy metal end of the spectrum, I recommend Coldseed's debut album "Completion makes the tragedy". I've reviewed that here at this site, as well as a handful of other AC/DC albums which I've given 4 or more stars out of 5 too.

I bought this album for Moneytalks and Thunderstruck. Usually on AC/DC albums, I buy the CD for one or two songs and warm to the other songs over time -- eventually learning to love the whole album. I've had it for several months now, and just can't get into the rest of the songs. They all sound the same and most are in the same key. I know AC/DC thrives on using the same sound, but they usually make it a little more interesting than this. About half of the songs lack the hooks and power chords they're famous for. Fantastic album if you're not looking for anything earth shattering aside from the aforementioned songs. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Flick Of The Switch, Back In Black, and this one ..."For Those About To Rock" were my first AC/DC albums I was exposed to in the early 80's. Of those 3 this one stands out just as much as Back In Black for me. So many anthems, and it's good to listen to in the fall around Halloween for songs such as "Evil Walks", "Night Of The Long Knives", and "C.O.D". Then of course there are the other rockers/favs in the title track; "Put The Finger On You", "Inject The Venom", and "Let's Get It Up", I even like "Breaking The Rules".

The only two not played very often are "Snowballed" and "Spellbound", and that's probably just because of being too busy playing those other songs mentioned over and over. Stronger than Flick of The Switch, more variety for sure than that one, and to me almost even with Back In Black at times, this one is a very pleasant, albeit dark and heavy, anthemic hard rock.

Like all overrated AC/DC albums with BJ two good songs. For Those About To Rock & Lets Get It Up...that's it.

The enormous success of 'Back in Black' demanded a follow up full of equally momentous hard rock anthems, so AC/DC along with Mutt Lange (for one last time) tried to recreate the magic of 'BnB' and released 'For Those About to Rock We Salute You' in November of 1981. It was a letdown but it's still a damn good record. The problem is the songwriting sounds awfully tired. The constant flow of gold for the 'BnB' formula started to dry up....it's like they were trying TOO hard. Brian Johnson is the main culprit...he was starting to show his limitations as a lyricist. Lange's production was again flawless in terms of sound quality, I just wished he could have helped Brian out a little more. There really is only one classic, the title track of course which is a metal masterpiece and the gunfire gives me the chills! Angus' solos sound strangely muted here, like the sound is too fine. Other faves include "Evil Walks", "Put the Finger on You" and "Inject the Venom". The rest of the album is full of what seems like 'Back in Black' rejects - most of the 2nd side is just not that interesting - good songs but nothing great. I really like this album but AC/DC had this incredible legacy which started circa 1977 and records like 'FTATR' just can't stand up to it. The shadow of Bon Scott certainly loomed large indeed, something that one of the greatest bands who ever plugged into a stack of Marshalls would have to live with to the present day.

AC/DC was either really burnt out from the success of Back in Black, surprised by the success, or just used up all their ideas for that album, because this follow-up album is lackluster in comparison.

The title song, with its loud, fierce guitar riff and soaring chorus is about the only worthwhile moment on the entire disc. The rest of the songs point to the rapid downward decrease in songwriting quality the band would find themselves in for the rest of the 80's decade. There's too many uninspiring moments on this album for me to really recommend a purchase. The last three or four songs don't sound any different from each other, and none of them unfortunately grab my interest in any way.

The band wasn't washed-up already though, since they would eventually come back hard and heavy in the early 90's and remind everyone just why they are the very best of all the simple hard rock bands that were ever formed. For a while though, they would just release one average album after another with some success along the way

AC/DC had one more stop before they exited for Highway to Hell. It was on "Powerage" that they continued spiralling upwards, tightening the twin guitar attack, picking up new bassist Cliff Williams and having Bon Scott perfect his infernal yalp. Once again, the songs were amped up sagas of bad love, wicked women and hard living, and this time the band dropped a pair of classics in "Sin City" and "Riff Raff."

Had the band not come up with a masterpiece on the next try, "Powerage" might not be such an overlooked record in the AC/DC canon. "Rock and Roll Damnation" is as good a three chord concert blaster as the band's ever come up with, and "Down Payment Blues" is the kind of funny/scary only Bon Scott could deliver. ("Can't even feed my cat on Social Security" being my favorite.) When the album closes with the loud and angry "Kicked In The Teeth," you're once again shown that AC/DC were stampeding towards the top of the arena rock heap. "Powerage" is a really good album that arrived just before a great one, but it's still worth a spot in your collection.

I think even Malcolm Young said it, that this was their most forgotten album. It`s definately one of their best. It`s as good as Let there be Rock and sounds just like it. After the brilliant Let there be rock album you`d think that no way they could top that but they did with this album. Everything let there be rock has, this album has it too. A rare song appeared around this time too. A song called "Cold Hearted Man' which appeared briefly on the b-side of the single Rock`n`roll Damnation. It could have only been released in Australia too. This album should have been the album that broke AC/DC into the American charts like what highway to hell did a year after, but some stupid people at their American label, Atlantic, weren`t confident enough in the band, and even more laughable is that their American label didn`t like Bon`s vocals, they even wanted the band to get another singer way back in 1976. How wrong these American people from Atlantic were. Hopefully they got the sack after highway to hell went gold in the U.S in 1979. it just goes to show that the fans know more about music and what people like than some business people in suits and ties. Down Payment Blues is my favorite song on the album, it`s a great rockin` tune and not a very well known AC/DC song

Outside of Back in Black and the new Black Ice, this is as good as it gets if you are a AC/DC fan.

I consider this album my favorite AC/DC album! I just gave this to my nephew for his birthday because he wanted to hear some different AC/DC.

Lots has been written about this album, and it's all true. This is 100% pure rock and roll, crunchy guitars, screamy lyrics and all. If you are looking for ballads or fill-heavy drumming, look elsewhere; this album is all about Angus. Some nice work by Bon Scott, too. If you were too young to have experienced this album firsthand (like me), one listen and you'll know what all the fuss was about.

This is great CD. It is their ONLY CD that has Thunderstruck AND TNT on it. Also Who Made Who......great song! My husband is the AC/DC fan and he loves the whole album.

Get this album, this is their 2nd live album and first with brian johnson. Brian is very good live. He even does a better job than bon scott. Brian is much better at singing Highway to hell. You can also consider it as a greatest hit album, a lot of their singles are on here but they are live. Also, to let you know this is a double cd, they have 2 different sets. A double which is this one and they have a standard one set cd

My husband had this double disc set for years and I lost one of the cds. Needless to say, I had to get it back! It is a double disc set, not 1 cd with all the songs on it.....just like the original........we LOVE it!!!

The Bon songs sucks on this live album. Well so do the BJ songs....he can't sing live anymore.

When AC/DC superfan writer Stephen King did his first and only turn in the director's chair for Maximum Overdrive, he used some of his clout to approach AC/DC for some rocking soundtrack songs. The Aussies approved, offering him six previously released studio tracks and three new songs (plus incidental riffs never on CD). It's worth noting that AC/DC was in something of a commercial slump at this time, so the results were cobbled together as a soundtrack/pseudo-greatest hits. Then a funny thing happened. The rousing anthem of a title track began to break on radio, the movie (a b-level horror film where angry trucks take over the world) did moderately well, and "Who Made Who" became AC/DC's first US platinum album in 5 years.

Essentially a quickie primer to the band, "Who Made Who" contains three seminal AC/DC tracks in "Hells Bells" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" from Back in Black and the title track from For Those About to Rock We Salute You. A pair of songs from Fly on the Wall show up, plus one Bon Scott era track ("Ride On"). There are a pair of new instrumentals that are forgettable. If you're looking for a quickie AC/DC set, this is fine, and the Vanda/Young produced title song makes it worth it. But really, any given AC/DC album prior to 1984 will suit you fine, or even the new "Black Ice."

Great CD! With the tracks " Who made Who" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" you are going to rock! It also has the rock anthem "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)". Great album and a great price. The Free shipping was great also.

I missed out on a few ACDC albums on the Phase 1,2 and 3 releases, and this was one of I think three.Even with only Three new items from the Boys, its very worth it !!It rocks, and also it has a nice soft side ( Ride on) which makes it a listening pleasure ( as with all ACDC albums).
I was hoping that the Disc would have extra video material on the Disc, but with this Connect-D disc, the pluses are, the Booklet, the packaging, and the extras you can get when you connect to the web side and see the Video for Who made Who, the Photos, Audio with Angus and Stephen King, and etc. A real treasure trove. My only wish is that they would make the material on the website available on a disc at some stage, just in case it "disappears" at some stage.
All in all, whilst its not the top of the albums, its a must have for any ACDC fan.

I used to have this album, but it got lost in a move several years ago. I haven't even received it yet, but the songs have been going through my head ever since I ordered it. Can't wait for it to arrive. I hope the quality is as good as the original.
