Alex Gopher

This is one of the best electronic/sample funk CDs put out. Very laid back grooves, lots of rolling basslines, and superb vocal samples make this a must have. Anytime I have a long car drive, this disc always makes it into the folder. I see it cheap everywhere, including here, so it's well worth the reduced price you see it for!

If you plan on having a party or are going to a party, it ain't a party if you don't have this CD. Alex Gopher is a genius and these grooves will put any party into high gear. The tracks flow into each other perfectly and the sounds they create are simply "ear candy", it's so, so good to listen to. Every track is excellent and the import also contains a 2nd CD of remixes of some select tracks, which is a MUST have as well. Even chilling out a home with your SO, this CD and others in the same genre, are the unobtrusive backdrop to any activity. I highly recommend Alex Gopher "Youmybaby&I" to enhance your life in general. Buy it.

The laid back BPM of Acid Jazz is usually a big snoozer for me - and much the current French house tends to wear with attitude. However this I certainly did not mind. Any composer that can borrow Billie Holiday's vocals to create a haunting musical soundscape amid an urban hip-hop beat is taking risks that such genre DJ's simply won't. If you buy this, you certainly won't be disappointed.

I would have given this album another star if the album as a whole had a faster pace, with more songs like "Party People" and "Tryin'". I found that this was more of a relaxing revival of the late 70' French house scene, more of a smooth listening album than a dance album, but still very good. I'd compare the style of this DJ as a cross between Daft Punk and Dj Dimtri.

This is great, Party People it's a delicius funky sound, you won't stop your body. I love french house and i recomend Daft Punk, Cassius, Bob Sinclair, Stardust, Powerhouse and any remix from Olav Basoski. Creeme por que a mi me gusta la musica feliz! Un abrazo desde chile, al sur del Mundo!

I had only heard a few songs by master dj Alex Gopher before I bought this cd. I liked what I had heard, so I decided to purchase it. This was one of the best purchases I have ever made. I is one of the 5 best albums inmy collection. If you like Air, Beck, or are even just a fan of good music, this is worth the price tag. Stand-out tracks include The Child, Party People, and the title-track, You, My Baby, and I. The Child is a soothing song which can take you away from stress you might be feeling and lets you hover above yourself. Simply close your eyes and you will be rewarded. Party People is a song that, even if you never dance, you will finds yourself moving along with the beat. It features vocals which name off the great party cities around the world. However, I do have a word of caution: don't be fooled by the term box set placed with this. It simply contains a double cd with remixes of songs on the original. Still, this cd is very good. This isn't really a cd you sit down and listen to, but rather one you put on and let things happen. Its very fun for parties or to simply let it all hang out. I am a major fan of the french electronic scene, so I might be praiseing it a little more than the average music fan would, but I still say it is a great buy.

One name not to be missed if you're at all interested in house music, particularly French house music, is Alex Gopher.

Gopher's rise to the upper echelon of the French house scene came through his work producing records for the influential dance music labels, Source and Solid, cornerstones of the Parisian house scene. He solidified his growing popular reputation after he contributed two tracks to Etienne de Crecy's highly acclaimed "Super Discount" compilation of French lounge-house tracks by some of the superstars of French house. Two years later, in 1998, he released his first solo album, "You, My Baby & I," a laidback and sometimes danceable downtempo house album with the singles, "Party People" and "The Child" becoming club staples. Come 2001, Gopher was commissioned to produce a couple exclusive tracks so Wuz was created for that purpose.

Originally a conceptual side-project formed to produce three tracks for the designer Yves Saint Laurent's catwalk shows in 2001, Wuz's output progressively developed into a full-length album. To have a harder and clubbier edge to his usual chill, downtempo style, Alex Gopher brought in labelmate Demon (aka Jeremie Mondon) to help out. The result is essentially Alex Gopher's second album and one of the finest and tightest house albums to come out of France to date.

Starting off the album with an airy and charmed track, "Intimacy," by Demon and leading straight into the chill and upbeat title track, "Wuz," one might believe that the album was going to be an endorphin-laden journey towards nirvana. But things quickly change, as the track "Without You" exudes a menacing dance beat not previously seen in Gopher's work. The mechanical repetition of indecipherable vocal samples set to a throbbing mixture of funky guitar licks and soaring flange effects all make for the sensation of a bad trip on the dance floor.

The song coasts into the very chill atmosphere of the next song, "Long Island," which is like a Vangelis track from the movie "Bladerunner" infused with a little bit of funk to give the listener a beat to tap to. It is almost an ironic understatement compared to the irresistible hit-single of the album, "Use Me," which follows in its placid wake.

A melancholy dance anthem characterized on one hand by the pessimism of the song's chorus line, "All you want to do is use me" and a persistent dance rhythm of obligatory house claps and bass thumps on the other hand, "Use Me" is a song engineered to be a dance hit. Tugging at both the listener's conscience attention to the lyrics and his/her dancing feet at the same time, it is an irrepressible song capturing both the sensational and intellectual nature of the musical vision Gopher had highlighted on his first album, "You, My Baby & I."

The songs that follow "Use Me," however, are less convincing of a dominant dance theme and are more relaxed downtempo tracks. At points, they almost seem to have a dance beat just to keep the party going, even while the host has clearly retired to his bedroom. Still, the atmospheric ambience of all the later tracks on the album do successfully set the mood for a perfectly smooth after-hours lounge to retreat to once the main party is over.

Though one might have fallen asleep by now after the very mellow glow of the past few songs, the last track on the album is not one to be missed as it stands as one of the strongest dance-focused tracks, and at 11:28 minutes, it generously comprises many facets of the Wuz sound. Just as the album began with the Demon, "Keep On Dancing (Last Man Standing)" was produced entirely by the Demon. A rambling bit resembling a DJ mix more than a song, it is nevertheless one of the most entertaining rides on the album.

i like alex gopher. this cd is a sophisticated piece of work, and definitely not electro alone. there's actually singing here, rock songs that sound like they were written by musicians and not just djs. it's original enough to make it difficult to find comparisons, but if i had to come up with one maybe i'd say mix flock of seagulls or talking heads with rinocerose - not bad. and this is only half-way into the album. there is actually acoustic guitar on the album. this is quality stuff.

the bonus cd is more like what i'd originally expected of this album - dance electro. not the best i've ever heard, but it is hard to keep still with this on.
