Andy Timmons

If you're reading, then you must know a bit about Andy Timmons already. Not going to break the CD down - no point as others have done that better here. Just know that every track is insanely great. I am a [hack!] guitar player, Satch is my personal favorite and I have deeply loved guitar-oriented music my whole life. But I like to think I have always been a bit discriminating about who I really enjoyed listening to - speed impresses me only so far. Someone else here said it best - after a while, speed is really just a question of mechanics and endless repetition. If you really want to play FAST, with enough practice and dedication, you can pretty much get there IMO. And with today's technology and video options, never before has it been easier to actually see what your fave musicians were doing on those strings, something virtually impossible prior to the 90s.

What distinguishes the really special guitar players for me is the emotion they are able to convey through the instrument, the tones they can get, their sense of melody, their ability alter tempos and moods and the ability to create a lyrical, almost vocal component to their guitar voice. Most importantly, I need to hear SONGS! For me, Satriani is the prototype master of these traits. Joe has arguably done more to bring back guitar oriented music to the forefront than almost anyone else in the last 2 decades.

I am adding Andy Timmons to my list of favorite players. I have known about Timmons for a long long time, but sadly never gave him his due until now. Timmons' Resolution CD is nothing short of amazing. 3 players, 1 guitar track per song resulting in 11 phenomenal creations.

Listen to Timmons. And for those new to guitar oriented music, other "new school", amazing players to check out: Marco Sfogli, Eric Johnson, Reb Beach, Paul Gilbert, Doug Aldrich, Tony Jamflone Jr, John Petrucci, George Lynch...the list is endless!

Buy this album!! You will not be let down! It is the most amazing one man show of guitar playing fromt the heart that I have ever heard.No one more soulful than Andy! He plays with so much beauty & emotion in everything he does, nomatter how fast or how slow the song is. Huge clean thick guitar tone, & only one guitar on every track. You will not be able to quit listening to this cd if you get it. You will want all of his cds, & you will be curious about wether or not h heas always been this good. And let me just save you the trouble & tell you, yes he has, & all of his records have amazing music on it.

To make this short and straight to the point, I have never heard the guitar played so beautifully.

Andy Timmons is back with another album after the huge success of "That Was Then, This is Now" and he's not showing any signs of slowing down. Being a guitarist myself, I greatly admire everything about this genius from his technical prowess, to his great songwriting, to his unmistakable warm, powerful tone. "Resolution," while not as enjoyable as "That Was Then, This is Now," certainly has its moments of virtuoso-level guitar and songwriting technique.

The first track, "Deliver Us," certainly lets the listener know what kind of music he or she is in store for. The rockin' hook combined with the beautiful tone Andy has come to be known for really sets a great mood! The solo passage is also very tastefully done and I give Mr. Timmons credit for not going over the top by shredding the whole time; the man truly knows that phrasing and sequencing are the key to a great guitar solo.

With the title track, Andy shows us his roots in blues, very melodically so I might add. Not only does the guy have great scorching high gain electric tone but his softer bluesy tone is just to die for! The songwriting is again tremendous and very melodic; he puts so much emotion in his work.

Speaking of emotion, Andy displays a great deal of it in his ode to the 9/11 tragedy: "Gone." From the beginning of the song it is obvious to tell from the minor chords just how much emotion he will be putting forth; a hauntingly beautiful elegy.

Well, I hope I have helped convinced you to buy this album because it is really great and I promise you won't regret it. If you're a fan of great guitar tone and songwriting then you will enjoy this. It's not as good as his previous attempt, so if you haven't purchased that one yet I would highly reccomend getting "That Was Then, This is Now" before this album.

As a fan of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, I bought this CD and think it is very good. Andy plays great melodic guitar and his tone and speed are great. I recommend this CD to anyone who likes rock guitar.

Andy is a schooled player, who can literally play any style better than almost anyone. This CD has some phenomenal shredding. His tone on the strat is the best I've ever heard next to Robin Trower. In ballads his axe sings.

I know i'm goin' to catch all kinds of grief for the title of this review, but its my belief that it's 100% true. Yes, better than hendrix/clapton/whomever. Andy doesnt need to light his guitar on fire, or play a four necked guitar (that's you, Michael Angelo Batio), or do any kind of theatrical junk. Andy is a masterful musician with a command of the instrument unlike any I've ever seen or heard before. Every note is delivered with such soul! I'm a guitarist as well and I play all the time, but if i'm listening to andy I feel the need to (once the albums done playing) go pick up my guitar and spend the rest of the day playing. That to me is the measure of a truly fantastic guitar player. His feel is incredible, his tone is second to none, and the composition and phrasing are just perfection. Pick up all his albums, especially this one and Resolution, and the two EarXtacy albums. You won't regret it. I'm going to get to finally see him play and meet him this week, and I'm so excited to see the best guitar player of my generation. Andy rocks!

After listening to Andy Timmons, I realized how everything I've heard before is just not as good. This CD is loaded with tunes that actually sound good... REALLY good!

if you love guitar, you'll love Andy's work. Not only he got the chops. but he's a great composer. If you think Steve Vai, Richie Kotzen, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, etc, etc are great, this album is for you. It's like Satriani meets Eric Johnson plus more.

Where have I been? This CD has been out for 3 or 4 years, but I just recently discovered Andy. This disc is amazing, top to bottom. What a fantastic player and composer.

Get this one before Resolution. It's the better of the two, IMHO. "Super 70's" instantly made it to my 'Top 100 of all time' playlist on my iPod.

If you like guitar albums (Satriani, Vai, etc.), this is a no-brainer.

First off, Andy is a musicians musician, and a guitarists guitarists. I got the cd, and it stayed in my player for 2 weeks.
He's is one of those artists that has a mastery of his chosen instrument no matter if it be straight up rock, jazz, eastern, or blues influenced playing. I cannot wait to hear what this guy does next.

This is a great album. Some of Andy's stuff is just so-so IMO but this one is excellent.

Very melodic and clean musicianship. His skill is evident and he has more interesting chops than Satriani. Overall a very good album.

When you reach the level of guitar playing that TIMMONS has, it is almost like there is nowhere left to go. Yet every release shines with endless inventiveness and not just noodling and chops that are designed to impress. This man writes the classical musik of the future. His compositions stand head and shoulder above all but a couple of contemporaries ( HOEY and FIRKINS - maybe ) Even his songs are excellent and his voice is pretty good as well. Different, but just as superb as THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW. If you like the guitar, you should have all this mans releases in your collection as he is the benchmark by which all others should be measured. SIMPLY STUNNING!!!!!!

Five stars are not enough for this amazing CD, Andy breaks it here with his best album yet.

Andy is hands down one of the best guitar slingers out there, in the same category with Vai, Satch and Eric Johnson, even toping them at times, always chosing the right notes.

Andy sings and plays electric and acoustic guitars, bass and fretless bass, electric sitar and E-bow - a tapping like guitar instrument, all with ease and virtousity to burn.

The album is full of amazing instrumental tunes and a few songs, The guitar freaks need'nt worry couse' these songs are amazing, melodic and shred heavy. The instrumental tracks will without a doubt hit you mercyless and leave you begging for more, he ripps on blues-rock-fusion thruout, plays a beutiful spanish guitar track, a mournful ballad and a sad lullaby.

For the fusion fans out there a very special guest appears on this cd, the amazing drummer Simon Phillips (Andy plays on his CD's "Another lifetime" and the live "Out of the blue"), who brought his band along to back Andy on a storng fusion track that Simon has written for the CD, as well as the closer a live version of "Cry for you" my pick for the best track on the album.

Andy definately matured to his own sound and it shows on this very recommended CD.

I eagerly awaited this one. Andy is a very underrated guitarist.

This CD is the least interesting of Andy's works. It is very uneven in quality and worse yet, the production thins out Andy's normally rich tonality. There are also some attempts in creating a more commercial track or two, but after the first minute, they wander aimlessly.

Gone is the strong Timmons signature sound heard on the EarX-tacy albums.

Andy... what happened?

I stumbled onto Timmons' Resoluion after surfing the Favored Nations website. I've just ordered the rest catalog. This was the first to arrive and I'm listening to it over and over. What may strike fans of guitar music is Timmons' amazing chops - shredder, chicken picker, jazzer - this guy really can do it all. But after the awe fades, I'm most touched by his musicality and beautiful sense of melody. While this record is not as refined as Resolution, it is still amazing music!

A guitarist friend introduced me to Andy Timmons about 10 years ago. He had a CD playing through a PA at Broadway Music in Lubbock, Texas. When I asked who was playing, he said "Andy Timmons." I borrowed his copy of Ear X-tacy for a couple of days and gave it a good listen.

I've listened to the recording off and on since I found my own copy. In fact, I own several of Timmons' recordings. I had the pleasure of sitting one of Timmons' workshops at Broadway some time later. It was a treat to hear him play live and to interact with him. Timmons is an excellent musician and a genuinely nice guy.

I have mixed feelings about this all-instrumental recording. Not all of the songs work for me. That doesn't mean there is a bad cut on the recording; it's just personal preference. I can say that those I like, I *really* like. The list includes Carpe Diem, Turn Away, I Remember Stevie, Cry for You, Electric Gypsy, and Hiroshima. Each of these tunes speaks to me on an emotional level. I listen to them often. I simply turned off the remaining tracks in iTunes.

This is guitar-driven rock and roll. If you like that kind of music, then this recording is for you. If you're interested in Texas guitarists, then there's another reason to own the recording. Regardless, you might want to give the lyrical nature of my short-list of tunes a listen and decide for yourself. You might just find yourself an Andy Timmons fan.

Before I mention anything else, this recording should be titled "ear X-tacy 2" by Amazon. For some reason, they don't have the title right.

On the strength of Andy Timmons' "ear X-tacy" recording, I bought a copy of "ear X-tacy 2." I'm not at all sorry I bought the second recording -- there are some good tunes on this disc. They are good enough to stand multiple listens.

My favorite track list from this recording includes A Night to Remember, Sometimes I, Down to the Wire, Groove or Die, and Wishing Well. The others stand as just OK in my taste and so I don't listen to them. These five are worth the entry price, however, and are on my iPod for listening on demand.

My impression is that this recording is not quite as strong as the previous ear X-tacy, yet it remains good workmanship. The songs just aren't quite as strong as the earlier release.

If you have "ear X-tacy" and like it, then don't be reluctant to add this one to your collection. If you haven't purchased "ear X-tacy" yet, then buy that one first. If you like it, then pick up a copy of this recording too.

One of the best electric guitar players I ever eard.. he's touring with Simon Phillips..

The Pawn Kings were and are a blues phenomona in Dallas with Andy in the lead role. But the group's sound is a fusion of talent that added Mike Medina on bass, Tommy Young on organ and drummers Keith Carlock or Mitch Marine to Andy's fireworks. Dan Wojciechowski is another great drummer who played with the Pawn Kings.

Everyone in this group had other projects, bands or events keeping them busy on weekends, but they found a way to make great live music together. The Pawn Kings played for their fans (and themselves) on Wednesday nights at Doug Henry's much-missed Blue Cat Blues club in Deep Ellum. The group played nearly 300 gigs there to SRO crowds from 1995 to late 2001. The sound is an eclectic mix of rock, old time R&B, gospel and Texas blues.

For all you blues lovers who couldn't be there to hear those amazing live performances, this CD and the recently released "Andy Timmons Pawn Kings Live" is the next best thing. All the fans who were blown away by the total sound of those four great players on those Wednesday nights already have their copies!

Andy Timmons is one of the most under rated guitarists performing today. That being said, this CD does not demonstrate his guitar playing potential. For that, you would need to buy EarXtacy, or EarXtacy 2. This CD does not begin cooking until the 3rd song on the CD--"Cashbox". Its there that Timmons plays a solo that will raise the hair on the back of your neck. On the upside, you get seventy minutes of electrified blues and rock on 13 tracks. Overall, its not a bad CD but it's certainly not Timmon's best stuff.

More and more I'm surprised by the talent and sensibility of A.Timmons. This "Lost Ear X tacy" countain instrumental songs (cd 1) and singed songs (cd 2)extremely goods where he can explore all his talents and influences as well. Take a look mainly at the "september", for the first time released on a cd. Great work!
