Armor for Sleep

I am a fan. One thing that I like about this band [there are many things to like....] is that they have a unique sound all their own, always have. Yes, the songs are deep, for some too much so, intense, sure but well crafted, not too over produced. Raw yet polished. The vocals up front, the message delivered. Punchy, solid bass and drums, great guitar tones. I am a fan of Ben's voice, again, very unique. There are so many bands right now that kind of sound "the same"....it's getting tiring....Not Armor, by any means.
The "Williamsburg" video is something I recently saw on TV, I guess it is turning some heads - it's a great song...all the songs on this disc are really well done. GET IT!!! Check them out when they come to town.

The first time I heard the song Williamsburg, I was completely hooked on AFS. Don't get me wrong, their last album was a solid hard rocking emo effort but let's face it, it was hardly original. Smile for Them ups the melody, sometimes at the expense of overall heaviness their last two albums offered, but it works here. All I heard before getting this album was how unlike What to do when you are dead it is, but that's a good thing. Unless you're Blink 182, in the music industry repetition isn't always welcome. Smile For Them is the type of album that can separate Armor For Sleep from the rest of the "emo" scene much like My Chemical Romance did with the Black Parade, Paramore with Riot and Taking Back Sunday with Louder Now. I think a listener will appreciate this cd more if they keep an open mind and resist the urge to compare it to previous AFS releases. This album belongs in a category all by itself.

I hadn't heard of Armor for Sleep before but a cousin of mine mentioned them and the name stood in my head..so when I previewed this cd I automatically fell for the music. Smile for the camera is a great song. I purchased this cd and haven't been disappointed with it as of yet. I believe everyone has different tastes in music so this might not be for some people but I love Armor for Sleep..they have a sound that I am very attracted to. I have to go back and get their older albums now!!! If you buy this cd I believe you won't regret it!!

After releasing their breakthrough album "What To Do When You Are Dead" in 2005 and gaining about half a million fans, they kept their cool and recorded a new album. While it's not really a huge departure from their typical sound, there is one thing that makes it special: it's frickin' Armor For Sleep! With amazing melodies, catchy choruses, and enchanting lyrics, the band creates music that can be enjoyed by almost anyone from punks to emo kids to even the open-minded metalheads (which are few and far between). Songs like "Chemicals," "Smile For The Camera," and "My Saving Grace" prove it. Check it out today!

"Smile For The Camera" is probably the most inspired sounding song on this CD. Even the ballad ("Snow Globe"/btw, ballads are my fav), although has okay lyrics, MUSICally sux like the rest of the album..."Williamsburg" and "Someone Else's Arms" are okay songs, but they drag on too long without offering that much in the first place. I'm glad they were offering this for free on their MySpace page, 'cause this isn't even worth $5.00 (the avg. "good deal" price for a used CD). And BTW, I DID try to get somethng good out of this; I went back to their MySpace page like 3 times just to hear these crappy songs and try to see something good in them. But I really think these guys are devolving through time. Their 2nd CD, although not a bad CD, was nowhere NEAR as great as their debut DREAM TO MAKE BELIEVE. This 3rd CD isn't even half as good as their second CD, which was only almost half as good as their debut. I totally don't get why this album has an avg. of 4 stars, except for the fact that some people are too darn nice and don't have enough self respect to banish music like this from their lives. There IS great music out there; not all of it's emo (maybe if I liked emo more than I do, this album would be a near-masterpiece, but I do listen to other types f music); Peter Gabrie's 2002 CD UP, Trespassers Williams' 2nd CD HAVING, The Starting Line's SAY IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT...even Senses Fail's LET IT ENFOLD YOU, although not really my thing, is MUCH better than this stuff. Hawthorne Height's 2nd CD IF ONLY YOU WERE LONELY is some great inspired heartfelt music. But this? What exactly is so great about this CD aside from a few interesting concepts that aren't musically realized entirely?

I was blown away by how well this cd is put together. It's just really well produced. The cd starts with the creepy sound of a car sinking into water and follows the subject through death, regret, anger, haunting, finally to acceptance. Throughout this the songs are structured well with call and response vocals, tight harmonies, and a reprieve at the end that feels like Rodgers and Hammerstein. The only drawback might be that it is almost limited in its focus and mood - the lyrics, tempo, music, and overall mood start to blend together in the middle and some songs don't stand out from the crowd.

I had never heard armor for sleep before I bought the cd. I love them, and this cd now. The lyrics are so deep, and when combined with the music create a sound that I have been looking for for years. One of the best cd's ever! Great find.

I think is one of the top three best rock albums of all time, when will this band release another one?

I really like this cd a lot and I am looking forward to seeing them live.

The last song, number 11, is indispensiable. Song 1 is a 30sec. cool guitar melodic intro. 2 is 6 are good i guess or ok, 4 is pretty good, yes, but 5 & 3 are blah, while 6 is a little grating/repetitive. Song 4, "Being your Walls" is rather good, catchy, and 7 is catchy, but repetitive and slightly unremarkable. 8 is also repetitive, boring and unremarkable-- rather terrible, awful, grating (though a few riffs in it might bne redeaming): "you'll be a ghost, i'll be your dream, you'll float through me, i'll disappear..." over & over. You WILL be reacing for the skip button. Song 9, Raindrops, isn't bad at all, pretty melodious & beautiful. Heart-jerking, very catchy. Cool riffs. So it has a few good songs. But some of them are "filler." Finally, song 10 is a slow, cool song. If you download some of theses insead, get 10, & 11 & maybe 9. You might also like 4 & 2, in that order i guess. At first, the dissappointment made me think, "Uh! 3 stars, but then 1/2-way through or more, i thought , no 4 stars. So it gets better as you go through it.
I really love this group, so it hurts to say that this album was a disappointment. If you like the samples in the MP3 download section here of #11, "slip like space," then you might like it. If on a budget, just download that song & set it on repeat along with a few other awesome songs from their other albums (like "A Short Little Trip" and "Basement Ghost Singing" from their other album, called: Things To Do When Your'e Dead.
BTW, their "extended tracks" vesion of this album only has one bonus track on that other one, hardly worth the extra doe. Why couldn't they have put a flash video on it or something, like ModestMouse did? I can't wait to get more of them, even though this had some weak ones in the first half of it. Not bad for the price at all. Like track 10 says, things can't be perfect; let some things go. ...Overall, you MUST get track 11 Slip Like Space [even if you download just that MP3 for a buck, listen to the sample free on Amazon!). You will cream [like a mocha-chino]. It is unparalleled. Rifts from track 11 will drift through your head all night, so that you wil think you are in heaven & reach for the volume & repeat buttons. this alone might make it 4 1/2 stars because that one song at the end is unparalleled, making you want to surrender all of your money to them.

I can't even express in words how much I love this album. The songs are all very catchy and have beautiful melodies. Ben has a great voice and sings with a lot of emotion, and his lyrics are very deep. My favorites on this album are Raindrops, Kind Of Perfect, and Slip Like Space, but I really love every song. This cd is just amazing. Pick it up. You won't be sorry.

Great CD; definitely not a happy CD...my favorite song on this is "Frost And Front Steps" with the lyric "you're laughing the way you do when I'm not there". The vocals are good, really have that "white boy pain" (Ben Folds anyone?) delivery. It's sort of goth, I think, or wanna-be goth...reminds me of The Cure's PORNOGRAPHY except without (as much?) synths...definitely not quite as creepy-crawly as that CD, but has the same ghostly dead-poet/lover feel going throughout it.

This is an okay album at best. The music is much better than the vocals and lyrics. Many of the tracks have great openings but I am continually disappointed when Ben Jorgensen (vocals) opens his mouth. Also for being classified as emo, there is a lacking of emotion. This album would be better with different vocals.

I bought this CD after buying there second CD, What to do When you are Dead, and was blown away. While there sophomore effort had some great tracks, this CD is a great listen all the way through. I had a chance to see them play at Penn State a month ago and they are a rocking band life, from the singer, the guitarists, and the drummer. "My Town" is the best song, catchy for the regular artists, but my favorite is the closing song. I would definitly get this CD over their second, and get ready for a great listen. Hope to hear more from these guys in the future.
