As I Lay Dying

As I Lay Dying has proved countless times that they can rock. Sporting a unique and brutal sound, the San Diego natives release an album that is one for the ages. This isn't your typical metalcore album. This is an As I Lay Dying album which means it's something special. All around phenomenal musicianship shows. From the guitar, to the drums, to the singing, to even the bass (not flaming bass players, I am one myself) As I Lay Dying proves worthy of many listens and is at the top of my playlist. I hope AILD will put out more records soon.

This is yet another wonderful by a wonderful band. Lyrics are good, singing is classic, and the playing is very talented.

At the beginning I only liked "Forseken", then I kept listening and I realized that I completely love "Nothing Left" especially the way it comes right after "Separation". The guitar at the end of "Separation" is amazing and "I Never Wanted" is, without a doubt, a masterpiece... Best album I bought in the last year or so.

I could care less if a band is Christain or Satanic. I am just a massive fan of music. Yet it seems like you can not go wrong with buying most Christain bands CD's.
If you like Shadows Fall..All that Remains...I would recommend this.

The music on this album is fantastic. In my review on As Blood Runs Black I said: "Some artists are such amazing musicians that they can screw originality and they can play other people's original ideas twice as well as the original artist. This is what As Blood Runs Blacks does for the first 4 songs." This is basically what As I Lay does, except for the entire frickin' album! There isn't a song on the entire album that I don't like. I felt the same thing about August Burns Red. Both albums are amazing at keeping my interest for the entire album. Their lyrics are also very good. So, with all the praise i have given As I Lay Dying, what is wrong with this album?? My problem is that you can not figure out what in the world Tim Lambesis is saying. What the vocalists say is very important to me, and it frustrates me i can only understand the singer. The cool thing about August Burns Red is you can understand most of lyrics, and even if you can't there is no way you can't understand what he's screaming during breakdowns, which happens probably two times a song.

So, it's an excellent album. Music good. Musicianship good. Percussionist good. It all adds up to 10/10 music. But the screamer kind of dropped my opinion of the album to 4 stars out of 5 stars. Lambesis does have a good scream and excellent tone, but his enunciation is terrible, what he says means absolutely nothing to me because I can't understand what he is saying.

But, all in all, if you like Metalcore this CD is a must have for your collection.

This is one of the best examples of uber tight metal. i unwrapped this album on christmas day and immidatley uploaded it to itunes. from that point on i heard nothing except pure awesomeness. it is one of the best albums i have ever heard and i am totally felling the soreness of too much headbanging. ROCK ON AILD!!!!!!!

As I Lay Dying-Shadows Are Security ****

Shadows Are Security is by far the heaviest album As I Lay Dying has ever released. Where Frail Words Collapse was pretty heavy but more of a harder edged album over all, SAS is just straight heavy.

The riffs are solid, and when a solo is player (though rare to hear a solo from As I Lay Dying) it totally kills! Jordan proves once again that he is among the elite in the modern world of metal drumming.

Tracks like 'The Darkest Nights' and 'Through Struggle' are among the bands best. The former being a (almost) subtle ballad with epic musicianship, and the latter being one of the bands most brutal tracks. Complete with a chugging guitar riff and great vocals/lyrics to accompany.

Over all Shadows Are Security and As I Lay Dying as a whole brought nothing new to the table with this release. But it is a solid album and one of the genres strongest to come along in the last ten or so years. So if it is your thing it is worth the price.

AILD is probably the best Metalcore band out there. SAS is a solid album with really good songs construction and guitar work. Lots of power and energy. The only problem is: the vocals suck.

Yes, I know that growling and screaming is what Metalcore is all about (which is a big reason why so much Metalcore is garbage). Still, if they would get a singer who could/would sing, AILD would probably be my favorite band.

Leaving aside the lack of vocals, however, SAS is a very good album. (P.S., catch their live show if you ever have the chance).

This is simply as i lay dying's best album heavy brutal and just a f*ckin masterpiece.I swear unlike other heavy bands you might not remember some of the songs but in this cd you will recall every song.I promise you will love this album even if you're not into metalcore,if you never heard this band before you simply might think they are death metal.Screw everyone who doesn't like this album they just can't deal with the fact that a christian metal band is one of the best and heaviest and called the gods of the genre.I simply love this album better than their newest one but this guys will always be one of the best FRAIL WORDS COLLAPSE is also a good album more angry and faster get that one too.This album deserves more than 5 stars yaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!

Simply put this is the greatest metal album of all time. if not greatest any style album of all time. metalcore isnt even my favorite style of music, but this is literally the most bloodpumping, heart-thumping, goose-bump making, album i have ever heard. its my favorite album. my other favorite is Brand New "the devil and God are raging inside me," so i'm not just a some metalhead talking about his favorite album. this album is straight up epic. give it a chance if you've never heard it. As i lay dying have put out some great music recently, but this is still their best in my oppinion. i hope you can enjoy it as much as i have for four years!

There is a significant difference between this (their first album) and the subsequent release: "Shadows Are Security." Overall, FWC is ok, for a start. (You have to cut them a little bit of a break since this was their first album). The only people who give this 5 stars are probably already raving AILD fans. Yes, there are a couple cool tracks but not enough to carry the album.

If you're new to the band (or new to Metalcore), don't start with this record. "Shadows Are Security" and "An Ocean Between Us" are both MUCH better.

This album along with shadows are security is one of the best.As i lay dying is a great band the drumming is so freaking amazing some of the best ever,and tim's vocals are pure raw power throaty screaming stuff.If you like them you will love this every damn song is perfect and keeps me headbanging all the time.Stop with the metalcore hate many bands are awesome while others are just "hardcore" and not metal at all so admit it's one of the heaviest stuff out there.So get this album it's loud,heavy,fast,brutal,and amazing it has melodic death metal too so enjoy this great stuff!

This was the first album I ever purchased from As I Lay Dying, and I enjoyed it immensely. Upon repeated listens I found myself skipping over a few tracks and just repeatedly listening to a half dozen or so. I found many excellent songs on this disc that I absolutely love and few that were instantly forgettable. All in all however, this was a very solid release.

Basically as I lay dying laid out the blueprint for metalcore with the swirling melodic guitar riffs and the timely palm mute chugs which arent over done.
Favorite songs are as follows
Collision - insane hooks, short and sweet
Elegy - Nice high pitch riffs mixed in with the thumping drums
Forever - excellent riffing again with a brilliantly timed melodic
background chorus.
94 hours - once again nice riffing

All the songs in this album have an energetic feel with raw power and melody.

I started listening to As I lay Dying in 2005 and I think this is terrific stuff. I would like to know who tagged this as "gay", because this is awesome. I suggest the chucklehead who tagged this as "gay" stick with listening to hip-hop, R&B, and pop. as far as metalcore goes, this is a band that refuses to compromise. as far as "new" stuff goes, I have never heard their EP's or their debut full-length album, so it sounds pretty new to me. I give this album 5 halos. (this is Christian metal)

There are 2 good songs on here. Reinvention and Beneath the Encasing of Ashes. Buy those two songs on itunes and abandon your ideas of owning the entire cd.

AS I LAY DYING are the best metalcore band around and this cd proves just that, all the songs are straight out raw and brutal. This cd is a reprint of their early albums as they went out of print, and anyone that thought this cd was a dissapointment is a idiot and possiblly likes Hip Hop or Rap music, like the couple of reviews above this. How could you think this was new stuff (apart from the last 4 songs that have been re-recorded), maybe your mentally challangened. This album was made for people that DID NOT have Beneth The Encasing OF Ashes as it went out of print. Of course its gonna suck if you allready have it. But if you dont this is possibly the best AS I LAY DYING album out. I believe this is better that Frail or Shadows.

This CD was a great purchase for me. For months now I have been trying desperately to get a hold of the original Beneath the Encasing of Ashes CD, however, I found nothing under $40. This CD was a great alternative for people like me, who just wanted a copy of their earlier stuff, for collection reasons.

If you're looking for the great As I Lay Dying sound that's in Frail Words Collapse, or Shadows Are Security, you won't find it here. And if you're buying this trying to find good quality songs from them, you'll be dissapointed. The main reason they released this CD is to keep their older releases on the market, so fans like me can purchase them without having the hassle of paying 40$ for a discontinued album.

As I Lay Dying are a prime example of how Metallic Hardcore should be done, and needless to say the material on both the 2002 EP and 2001s Beneath The.. are full of the amazing metalcore youd expect to hear from a band that near invented the genre.

The confusion arrising from this release was the re-recording aspect. Some seemed to believe that this would be both a re-recording on the EP and on Beneath The.. but sadly it is not. The cd is just a repackaging of the 2 cds put together, with a "re-recorded" version of the EP which (other than Reinvention) seems to have been simply lifted and reordered from Frail Words Collapse. This was personally a great disappointment for me because i thought itd be great to hear if theyd done anything different with the songs, but sadly they have not.

Needless to say, if i didnt have the EP and album already, this wouldve been a complete waste other than getting to hear a better version of Reinvention. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone looking for something new.

Don't buy this lame nu-metal wannabe hard junk. Every single band in this nu-metal scene all sound like rip offs of each other and they just plain suc. No talent, just screaming and double bass. Can't even understand lyrics and all. If you want a new descent metal album get the new Megadeth, Madball, or even the new Biohazard. These bands mentioned are original unlike As I Lay Whacking.

Be sure to pick this up if your a fan of the increasingly popular metalcore band As I Lay Dying. All of their tracks on here are fantastic although the only downside is getting stuck with the American Tragedy songs which I thought were terrible. So get this and enjoy their older work(although most of these are now on Frail Words Collapse). Be sure to listen to tracks 1 and 3 which are amazing.

5 sweet tracks from AILD: more melodic, still brutal. AT's pretty good & if you like them, great. But AILD rips (how can you beat a Faulkner title for a bandname?!?!) I also recommend Falling Cycle's "Conflict," Redeem's "Diadem of Beauty," Grace For the Fallen's "Field of Blood," Soterios' "Blinding Pain of Unspoken Words," Nodes of Ranvier, Life In Your Way, Hopesfall, Spite of Opposition, Solace, Face of Humanity, Underoath, Chalice, & Zao (of course). (If you like your melody in a DM v. HC package, check out Soul Embraced, Thy Pain & Anaemia: rips, rips, rips).(Postscript: Falling Cycle & AILD totally rip busted 'Shadows Fall' & make In Flames' "Clayman" sound like girltalk. Grow up, critics.)

the original is much better than the re-release. it has more of a raw sound than the processed sound on the new version. i prefer to hear what the band can do instead of the recording engineer.

this CD is prety good, its more raw and the sound of it is of a lesser quality, but none the less its good, the songs are good, and Tim's scream is awesome
great CD, you should get it if you like As I Lay Dying

Yes, this does sound like Zao at some parts, but this is a great album by a great band. Personally, I think it's the best so far, even though I love "Frail Words Collapse" a lot. Besides, you can't just hate a band because YOU think they sound like something else.

It's tragic that this CD went out of print. It's such a great album. The opener, "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes", picks things up, and "Forced To Die" and "The Voices That Betray Me" show that this band knows how to play some good music. If you are a fan of As I Lay Dying OR Zao, I'd advise that you try to find this album if possible. Believe me, it's just that good.

It still sucked but yeah just so my point will be made...As i lay dying's "beneath the encasing of ashes" truly sounds like a zao rip-off but like most christian bands which most of them used the same vocal range as zao's i just call this a attempt to rip them off without even wanting to rip them off...Dont waste your money.
