Ashlee Simpson

I loved the first cd, loved the 2nd cd even more, but this one is just ehhh. There are a few good songs, but for the most part I was thinking 'what is this?'. It sounds nothing like her other cds and wasnt what I expected at all, and I consider myself a big Ashlee fan. I hope the next cd is more like her first 2.

I got this album when it came out, and I still love it. The songs are catchy and fun, and Ashlee's vocals sound good. She has become someone who is easy to make fun of by the public, which is understandable because of a few bad performances and a lackluster 2nd album, BUT, she bounces back fully with this album. It's just a shame that it will go rather unnoticed because she made a few bad career moves. It may also suffer from the switching of the first single, which was not necessary. This album is mostly upbeat and fun, while sounding more mature than her previous material. My only complaint is the album cover-but that doesn't take away from the music! Standout tracks are:

Rule Breaker
No Time For Tears
Outta My Head

I also recommend tracking down bonus track Can't Have It All. It's a great tune and should have made the album. Follow You Wherever You Go is another good song about stalking a guy with funny lyrics.

Finally, Ashlee has decided to stop pretending that she is a punk rocker. With Bittersweet World, the younger, more tone-deaf Simpson sibling has wholeheartedly embraced the `80s, beat-tastic sound that has been gaining speed in the pop world over the years. With Timbaland and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes producing the majority of the record, it comes as no surprise that her latest is a far cry from the faux-rock that characterized her last two albums.

The result is a mixed bag. Luckily, the emphasis on heavy production and synthed-up beats tend to bury Ashlee's vocals in the mix, and her voice sounds almost as doctored as Paris Hilton's did. Lead single "Outta My Head" is built on a nagging guitar beat and a simple drum machine, but sadly the lyrics are ridiculously inane ("what you lookin' at me for huh? / show me respect or I will show you the door"), and Ashlee fails miserably at sounding sassy.

The album isn't totally worthless, however. For every cringe-inducing break-up song ("Little Miss Obsessive") and pointless bad-girl posturing ("Rule Breaker"), there are a couple bright spots: the dark pulse of "Murder" and the whirling guitar pop of "Ragdoll," and no one can ever accuse Ashlee of lacking energy. All in all, Bittersweet World is more of a party than her earlier efforts, but still a plastic, manufactured one at that.

One of my favorite track off the album, Boys possesses this crazy, crazy (good) island feel assisted with simple guitar licks, which we've come to expect from Ash.

Hot Stuff is almost filler. Sometimes it's silly, sometimes it's funny. It's the arrangement that is lacking. The main redeeming factors are the "starry" production and the lines: "Feels Like I'm in Candyland/I'm going down the chute again/With unicorns and fairy rooms/I think I've had too much to drink..." part.

"Murder She Wrote, Murder She Wrote". hehe. Remember that 90's song with that Jamaican guy singing that? Anyway, Murder is pleasantly-surprising. Its beat is hot like fire! Timbaland shows up as a guest here.

Never Dream Alone is a ballad that has minimal distracting production only including vocals from Ashlee, violins and a very simple piano arrangement. It pretty much makes up for the lack of good songs in a row. This track is so intimate and you can get lost in it if you let it take you there.

8/30/08 ~ Since the first day I posted this, a lot of the song scores went up so I changed this CD from a 3 star rating to a 4.

I'm not ashamed to say i'm a fan of Ashlee Simpson. I've been a fan since her first album and have stayed a fan even through her 'SNL moment.' I loved the first album. Her second was hit and miss for me. This, I believe is her best so far. One thing about the lyrics they have in the booklet thingy it comes with(or whatever they call the thing) most of the lyrics that are in the thing aren't the same words they're saying in the songs. If you're gonna learn the words to the songs don't rely on the words they give you. So whoever put that together should be fired their job can't be that hard, but i digress.

The music is great, it really is and Ashlee really does sound good. The music isn't about how she's been in some sort of shadow behind her sister and no whining about how nobody understands her. It's got great beats and it's definately got a different sound than what she's experimented with before and it works for her. Nothing on the album is bad and there are at least 4 or 5 that i like to crank the volume to but she's still got some room to grow. I'll leave it at that.
My main point:Give her a chance, at least she's not as bad as Hilary Duff or[sorry to say this] her sister Jessica Simpson. If you're going to buy any of her albums this one is probably your best bet.

I bought this album when it first came out, but then I got careless and didn't put it in its sleeve so it got scratched. I was really happy to find it on Amazon because I can't find it in the stores anymore! It's one of her first CDs, so I was really surprised to find out it was good. Give it a whirl! You won't be sorry.

Yes. I honestly believe Ashlee is one of the better artist in today's music industry. In the past woman were just about image, if they wore less they made more. Blondie, Janis Joplin, Steve Nicks, Heart, and countless other female artist made horrible music, but were physically attractive.

Well people its the 21st century and artists like Ashlee Simpson, Britney Spears, and Avril Lavigne are here to prove that TALENT and GOOD LOOKS is going to help lagging cd sales.

A hugely recommended album for someone who wants to hear TALENT.

Clearly, all the people that are bringing up the SNL incident and others haven't even listened to the full album! It would certainly be a mistake to only purchase several songs and base your reviews on that. The album as a whole is a story. Sure, she isn't the best vocalist in the world. But she has her own unique style without all the profanity everyone feels it necessary to include in their songwriting. Just listen to the vocals, they are actually really amazing. And the instrumentation is great as well. I can't say that there is a song on here that I don't like. I have yet to see an album top this one.

Who would have thought the younger Simpson would be so well received? Jessica may have tarnished the family name, but Ashlee did a decent job preserving it. The sound is so far from Jessica's pop and that's a breath of fresh air. My favorite tracks include "Autobiography," "Pieces of Me," "Shadow," "Lala," "Love Me For Me," and "Surrender." It was fun listening it my freshman year of college.

Ashlee Simpson is the girl who got caught lip-syncing on SNL, so her CDs must not be very good, right?

Wrong.

After all, everyone from KISS too Evanescence have admitted to using backing vocals live. But does that mean they make bad CDs?

Not at all.

Autobiography is am excellent teen-pop disk. Period. Most people will take their aggressions out on this CD since it has the name Ashlee Simpson attached to it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't contain some of the catchiest pop-rock tunes this decade.

Of course, it's not for everyone. Music snobs who like "important" tunes (i.e.: Death Cab for Cutie, Radiohead, etc.) will not like this CD. It's total fluff, but it's the kind of catchy, fun fluff you can't help but blast in your car and scream along to.

(In fact, you can practically hear groups of giggling girls at a slumber party somewhere singing along with you.)

Don't be embarrassed! Buy this CD and let your inner teen loose.

Ashlee Simpson...where do I begin? First off, this is pure 100% the bubbliest of bubble gum sugary sweet POP. She tries soooo hard to be raw and edgy and fails so miserably at it, it's like watching her on SNL all over again. It's amazing her label didn't drop her sorry self entirely after the lip synch heard 'round the world, but lucky for her, she's got Daddy and Sissy paying her record company to keep her. Just sampling the first few tracks shows you what this album is all about: Ashlee trying so desperately to prove to everyone that 1) She is NOT like her sister 2) She is a hard core "rocker" and 3) She CAN sing. Unfortunately for you Ashlee, you don't have me or many other's on this site who have reviewed your self indulgence of an album fooled. You DO sing crappy music just like your sister, you're not by any means a hard core rocker, and above all you CAN'T sing. No matter how hard you try, you'll never be what you so desperately and pathetically want everyone to think you are.

Granted an Ashlee Simpson record isn't likely to rate very highly on critics' charts, but its too easy to dismiss this as yet another one-star album from the Simpson clan. For the record, I did think Jessica Simpsons' last effort "A Public Affair" was perhaps the most disgusting thing ever put to record before Nicole Scherzinger went solo, so when you compare this album to anything by Jessica, its evident that this one has its' merits.

"I Am Me" is one of those artificial 'pop-rock' albums that rely completely on production rather than its' lead vocalist. Frankly, I couldn't care less if Ashlee Simpson can sing or not - I just want good singalong music that I can put on repeat. On that front alone, this is a very solid album. I would say that this compares quite favorably to Britney Spears' "Blackout", another derided album that is actually quite listenable.

The three best tracks here make up for some of the more filler moments on the CD. The best cut is the massively overlooked single "L.O.V.E", which really is the best thing Ashlee has done. The first single "Boyfriend" is a faux-rock stomper that I would easily recommend over anything by Lavigne, and the sultry "Burning Up" oozes a 1980s vibe, in a very Madonna meets Sheena Easton way (this is a good thing).

If you listen to your music based on who's singing it, then you're probably never even going to venture towards this. However, if you're looking for a fun album that you listen to endlessly and sing along to, then this is the album for you. I am quite surprised at all the negative reviews here because this is indeed a fantastic, purchase-worthy record.

I am so sick of so many good albums having low ratings just because the people that review the albums on here goes with the stigma of "hating" Ashlee, or Britney, or Paris Hilton, or Courtney Love. The album is FANTASTIC, and the only reason it has a low rating is because people hate Ashlee. But the CD itself is very great. So don't listen to these people that are judgmental and dumb.

This is garbage. This little bit of stuff can not sing, nor does she have anything in music to say at all. A Joke. A fake. An example of the garbage on the radio now.

Back in the day, Ashlee Simpson was hailed as the Smarter Simpson Sister. Her "Pieces of Me" garnered acclaim from radio hosts for some reason (I'm assuming payola)

"Pieces of Me" is a fake emo/goth/mopey fake punk song. It's so bad it would make Iggy Pop dive into shattered glass and peanut butter to numb the pain. It would be too girly for the New York Dolls. "Pieces of Me" is the usual unrequited love teen pop. Not all music is supposed to be deep. Nor should it be. In "Pieces of Me",it's pretentious. Simpson aims for depth in the kiddie pool. "Pieces of Me" falls to pieces.

I used to L-O-V-E this song back then in summer of 2004, but now I realize that Ashlee didn't sing this song. SHE'S NOT PUNK. Plus, That was soooooooo funny to see her get caught lip-synching on SNL and get booed at the 2005 orange bowl.

Pieces of me is a great song,,, everyone else who doesnt own this single and posts a review should really SHUT THE HELL UP cause well if you dont own the single you shouldnt talk! Ok, I'm gonna go through just about everything, so if you would like to fully understand what is wrong with Ashle Simpson, keep reading. If not, well, that's fine too, but you might find this funny.

The first thing about her is her looks. She has to be one of the absolute ugliest living things in existence. With her big fat potato nose, her manly face, her hideous ugly burned-looking hair, her obvious implants, she's a disgrace to the eyes!

The second thing you can't deny is her obviously untalented voice. Remember the 2004 MTV music awards? Remember her attrocious performence? Yep, that's her. Untalented, just like her older, only slightly more attractive sister, and trying to use her own rediculous personal life to appeal to the children who like. That's right, children. No one in their right minds who is over 10-11 would buy this garbage. It's sad how they even put this stupid, pointless, idiotic song on NOW 17 in the first place. What's it doing there? Who knows.

The next thing I can't stand was, you guessed it, her SNL lip synch 'performence'. Then she starts doing this stupid little dance to get off stage and then blames the incident on two things, if anyone paid attention. First she blamed it on her band, who were all playing well, and said they started playing the wrong song, and then of coarse she blamed it on acid reflux disease. Or was she blaming that on her bad voice? Never mind. It still has to do with that SNL thing anyways.

The fourth thing about her I am beginning to truly hate is how she dresses, well, first of all really slutty, but also it's obvious that she's following the trend Avril started a while ago. Black punk clothes and forgetting what a brush or a comb is. Well, maybe Avril knows what those are, but Ashleeeee doesn't. As I said earlier, her hair looks like somebody set it on fire and it fell out, then they glued in back on all messed up. Anytime I make the mistake of looking at her I can't help but laugh.

The fifth and final thing is how her album was only made as popular as it was because so many young (VERY young) idiotic kids bought into her rediculous show. I find it hard to believe that this country is gonna last long when this is what we're letting our kids watch. "Reality" shows need to be simply banned forever. I've had it. At this point all the good shows on TV are all on so late that I can't even stay awake to see them anymore, like 1:00 or even 2:00 and this trash wastes the daylight hours. If you, the current reader are anywhere from 13 - 18, and you watch these stupid reality shows, use cuss words all the time, and dress and act like a little punk then there's no hope for you. Trust me. I used to be like that but then I wised up and realized life only happens once. I'm not about to ever let another moment of my life be wasted acting like a teenager, listen to music like this, or hang out with the wrong crowd, which if you haven't guessed, listens to and watches losers like this one right here. Ashlee needs to be put out of business now, and forever, as with her sister. Their evil reign needs to stop!!!!!!

"Pieces of Me" is an awesome song! It has a great vibe and feeling. I love Ashlee Simpson and this song rocks!!!

This CD is AWESOME! Almost every track, I know the words to. My favs, "La! La", "Better Off", and "Nothing New". "10" for this debut CD!

She may have been in big sister Jessica's shadow, but that shadow propelled her to ephemeral MTV stardom. Only marginally talented pop star Ashlee Simpson made her debut in "Autobiography," a forgettable collection of rock-tinged pop, with limp writing and strained vocals.

The now-infamous title track starts off with the ominously intoned "You think you know me," as if to establish a sense of mystery. Following it up is a collection of passable guitar pop, like the whiny "Shadow," cringingly juvenile "Lala," and bland "Unreachable." Sprinkled here and there are some by-numbers ballads like "Undiscovered" and the bouncy pop of "Surrender."

Much of the buzz about Simpson is about her SNL lipsynching gaffe, and formerly it was all about how she is pop superstar Jessica Simpson's little sis. But taken only by itself, Simpson's album is a bland, somewhat whiny pop confection that aspires to rockness, and falls short of its goal.

The music is average guitar pop, not outstanding but not ghastly. John Shanks does a pretty decent job with guitar, bass and keyboards; the three guys who do percussion -- Jeff Rothschild, Kenny Aronoff and Abe Laboriel Jr. -- are passable as well. It's unfortunate that their music is paired with Simpson's vocals.

It's not written anywhere that you have to have an amazing voice to be a singer. And Simpson's might be passable if she stuck to growly intonations. Unfortunately she tries to hold notes and stretch them out -- and her voice starts cracking and straining. As she sings, "Living in the shadow/of someone else's dream," the word "dream" has quite a squeaky strain to it.

And the songwriting is not just bland, but immature and contradictory. Simpson spends quite some time lamenting that her sister was the pretty, popular one, then commands "Don't feel sorry for me!". If you don't want us to feel sorry for you, then why are you complaining? It gets worse, with Simpson coyly saying "You make me wanna lala in the kitchen on the floor." Interpret that as you will. The way I see it, I cannot understand why she sings a song about sex, then quickly softens the naughtiness with an infantile euphemism like "lala."

While the instrumentation backing Ashlee Simpson up is moderately good, her conflicting tough-girl/mopey-girl image and straining vocals make "Autobiography" all but a disaster. Sorry, Ashlee -- you're still in the shadow.

"Ms.Simpson II" is simply an ear candy...truly original and her songs sounds straight from that girl's heart.With her slight gothic attitude,I can sense her freedom in her life through "Shadow",reborn with a new conception.Not forgetting the ever juicy bits of "Pieces Of Me" that's still winning new fans everyday.

The album is jam-packed with catchy sing-along tunes.It reflects her individuality that is expressed in every single tune in each track.I must admit that her songs overshadows her sister's songs which are quite dry,dont you think?

Ashlee has definitely expressed all the things she felt in life and make one hell of a great album.Watch out! cause it ain't over with Ashlee eventhough with lip-synching rumors.She'll be there to prove to the audience that she's got that something nobody has.....that is "talent"!

I think it is a great cd with excellent songs and is good to listen to all the time!

I think Ashlee grows higher for each album. Bittersweet World is a very catchy album with a gem at it's end.

I like this CD. It's not as... Ashlee as her previous work. But it can hold it's own. My favorite tracks from this CD... "Outta My Head", "Boys", "Rule Breaker", and the BONUS track "Invisible" are worth having this CD. But it!

Not many pop stars these days WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!!! Listen up, People! Yeah. Her voice isn't that great. She'll never be at Carrie Underwood's level vocally, will NEVER soar like Beyonce's beautiful range, or even possess half the soul that Keyshia Cole has. Or for that matter, emote 1/3 of the pain Mary can channel to Her fans.

Shadow is a track about how Her sister got all of the attention when She was younger and Ashlee had to deal with all of the pain on Her very own. Trying to find someone who would appreciate and accept Her for who She was. But it took forever for that to happen...

Anyway, She's better now. "So don't feel sorry for Me." She says. "Don't feel sorry, don't feel sorry for Me..."

HOWEVER, (and this is a BIG *HOWEVER*) She co-writes every track that We hear and has a knack for getting with the right producers to make great, catchy pop-rock tunes. For that, I will never stop buying Her music. As long as She takes some voice lessons, I will always Be around to enjoy what She dishes out. I have a feeling that this third album will REALLY get us moving. I hear She's written with a lot of different people and has a new sound.

I can't wait another day to be honest!

I don't understand why people HATE Ashlee! She lip-synched becuase she was SICK. Britney Spears has lip-synched, pretty much all the time, pretty much all of the singers in Hollywood have lip-synched ONCE! I really liked this single and I recoomend every Ashlee fan to buy it!

Wow, it must be so hard living in the shadow of such a HUGE talent as Jessica Simpson! Because we all know she just ruined Ashlee's life, with all that attention around her! Please, spare me.

This song could not be more contrived if Ashlee Simpson had to stake her life on it. Indeed, as with the other singles off 'Autobiography', master songwriters Kari Dioguardi and John Shanks were co-writers with Simpson. C'mon, who do you think did the majority of the writing? To be sure, most of Simpson's 'Autobiography' was obviously written by others. What does that leave us with? An autiography that's 5% authentic?

Clearly, for a song that is meant to be so cathartic and true to life, there is a complete lack of integrity behind releasing an album called "Autiography" with such a single as "Shadow" from it, only to call on professional writers and producers to do the actual work for you. Does anyone really care about this, though? No, they don't. So keep on buying Ashlee Simpson's contrived, ridiculous records, because that is exactly what her record company wants. They hope that you keep on believing she has talent, and that she keeps on believing it as well. Hey, as long as they get a steady cash flow, do they care about the quality of music that finds its way to your ears?

For 3 reasons:
The Song: a really fun song that every girl and maybe some guys can relate to!!
The B-side: a romantic ballad about summer love, reallly romantic and softer side to Ashlee.
The remix: Great, Too, Dance, Too!!!

La La? Anyone could write better lyrics that this load of rubbish. It makes no sense. It is trying so hard 2 be rock when it comes off really fake. DO NOT BUY!

I AM A BIG ASHLEE SIMPSON FAN...
LA LA has 2 versions of the single! This is version 2... wich I really like but I was dissapointed to see that it had no La La remix!! thats why I only gave it 4 stars but I think it deserves a 4.5

I bought this single while in Europe (so it was cheaper than 12 bucks!) However, I bought it cause I downloaded the 29 Palms Vocal Remix of "Pieces of me" a while ago and fell fro it right away, even my friends who like hardcore club music liked it, it's so different and a great remix with Trance elements and the perfect amount of vocals used (1st verse and chorus).

Then I gave "Endless summer" a chance and, christ on a bike! Why wasn't this in the album let alone a single? Honestly, this is better than anything she's done even if I haven't heard a lot from her but this wins hands down as her best song. The lyrics might be a little bit cheesy but anything is better than "You make me wanna lala", right? And they make sense, they tell a story and it's catchy though people might complain it's a bit slow however it's in the same vein of Shadow but not as whiny.

As for the Lala song and the video, they're alright I guess.
