Attic

I bought this CD after a quick sampling at a used CD store in Brazil. The vocal harmonies are great, some fun lyrics, but the songwriting isn't really 100%.

The main theme of the album is kind of a little girl, Alice In Wonderland fantasy with an edge. Lot of mentions of "The Big Bad Wolf" or "Him". The first 4 tracks really set the tone:
"Irresistable" introduces to the power of the girls' unique vocals that kind of sound like The Cranberries meet the Cardigans.
"Intense" is definitely the stand out track, with its in your face harmonies and heavy synths.
"I Am, I Feel" is a fun girl power song, where they sing about getting revenge on a guy who treats them bad.
"Alisha Rules the World" is the title track & has a trippy, but catchy hook.

The rest of the album just meanders off into silliness, it's not a great album overall-but I haven't gotten rid of it yet, so that's saying something.

this is absolute rubbish pop. there is not 1 decent track. they seem to have gone out of their way to create the most ANNOYING synthesizer tones ever! they seem to be a awful clone of all saints, the spice girls and eternal

This stunningly superb debut album received various degrees of critical acclaim upon its release in Britain - some loved it, and some hated it. I am from the former. The band consists of two girls, Karen and Shelley Poole (daughters of Brian Poole from The Tremolos), who write all of their own music along with their brother. So you see, they're not like most pop music. Said to influence the early 90's band, Shampoo, Alisha's Attic have constantly reinvented themselves.

The first of three studio albums (plus three B-Sides and Rarities albums), it is partly influenced by a kind of Alanis Morisette mentality. The majority of songs here are about relationships busting up or in the flame of passion. Such intense emotions on each song makes each track spectacular. The stand-out track would probably have to be 'I Am, I Feel', their first single, although it's always a good sign when album tracks such as 'White Room' and 'I Won't Miss You' are just as good as the singles. At times it can be a very bizarre album - such as the hilarious 'Personality Lines', a skit on help-lines - but it all blends together perfectly to create an image of what is really the greatest band to have come out of Britain in ages.

And one other thing, I met Karen in London, and she's lovely :)

Of the three albums the girls have released this one is the best. The blend of great vocals, harmonies, excellent writing talents and the relaxing mood of the album leads to an amazing listening experience. Some of the best songs on here were never released as singles, such as "Just The Way You Like It" and "Stone In My Shoe" A brilliant band with huge talent

Finally, the perfect blend of meaningful lyrics and catchy melody. Alisha's Attic will delight fans of all ages, guaranteed, and their insight will make you feel. You will find yourself in their songs.

Hands down, this bugz collection has to be one of the best mixes I've heard in a very very long time. When you put the chilled breakbeats, percussive rap, house, and funked up remixes together the flow is unbelievable. Some of the standout tracks are focus having your fun, seiji ft. lyric L -loose lips, and the re-edit of N'dambi's Call me. This is a bada** cd.

This is truley unique stuff. I'm a huge 2step and UK Garage fan, but also like downtempo electronic music. This stuff ain't no normal trip hop or other "downtempo" chill out music. Its breaks and bassey sounds are funky as hell. And its a fantasticly crafted DJ mix set to boot.

When people are talking about broken beat, they are most likely to talk about Bugz in the Attic. Because, sometimes it feels like broken beat equals Bugz in the Attic.
The new remix collections show's why. Original tracks by Amira, Macy Gray, Dwele & Slum Village, Vikter Duplaix, Amy Winehouse, Amp Fiddler, Jazzanova, Zero 7, Markus Enochson, Nitin Sawhney and so many more. All remixed by Bugz. At it rocks all the way! Every track is a stand-alone piece and is done with care and love. It's show's! It's a lovely album, heavily influenced by soul, as most of the tracks here are originally soul or nu-soul tracks. Full of vocals and broken beats. Often also some jazz tip.
Defently one album of the year.

This album will easily come to be known as the K&D Sessions of Broken Beat. There was down tempo before Kruder and Dorfmeister released their groundbreaking album, but the Sessions brought it to a climax that defined the genre. I beleive that Got The Bug will do the same thing for Broken Beat. It is infectiously funky and seeping with soul. This will be the reference album for broken beat for years to come, not just another electronica album that gets cast aside after a few months.

There's a lot or a little of breakbeat, techno, house, synth-pop, hip hop, reggae, and 70's soul featured in this mix. It's a collaboration of 9 members that make up Bugz in the Attic, and with each one picking a track or two, it makes for a huge variation across the board of musical genres. What is notably missing is any of the genres this group is most known for: deep house, nu jazz, and broken beat. They've gone for something completely different with this mix series that is well known for basically, putting whatever the heck you want on it.

It does make for an enjoyable ride through all the styles of music, hitting some notable tracks like Rammellzee and K Rob's early old school rap, Beat Bop, where they play just about all 10 minutes of the original track; The Fearless Four's Rockin' It, which features one of the most recognizable electro melodies of the 80's; and the soulful We Can Make It If We Try by The Sylvers. Soul and hip hop are the most featured genres in the mix.

I might have been leaning toward 5 stars, as this is a very enjoyable array of tracks, however very poor track transitions in certain spots puts somewhat of a damper on the flow of the mix. There's a few tracks that just aren't mixed into each other at all, including a full 2 second delay after track 7 ends. The same thing happens at the end of track 13, although this break seems like it may be a mastering glitch. Even so, a big seal of approval on this entry in the hit-or-miss Back to Mine series.

being a long time Alisha's Attic fan and owning every album and single released, the collection is just a bunch of (pretty much) random tracks thrown together by the record company after dropping the artist. SO there is no point in buying this if you already own everything. that said, if you're short on cash and want to dive in to the wonderful world of Alisha's Attic this is a perfect album for you. It includes all their singles... all incredibly brilliant, and b-sides. they could have picked better b-sides like: god lives there, dare you to kill me, drunken and tearful, not my muse, daffodil or a diamond..... but the live tracks included are amazing. I guess the point i'm trying to get across here is that by the collection only if you're a total Aa completice or an Aa newbie. but your best bet is to buy the albums: Alisha Rules the World, Illumina, and The House We Built! xxx ali xxx
