I love this set and I adore Pablo's music--the only quibble I have is with the DVD which is frankly of a home video quality. Who cares? I don't own a TV anyway...

So quit reading this review anyway and buy this box set.

This collection should have been a 5-star, slam-dunk. The music is fantastic. The only (minor) quibble is the lack of the original "Java", not just the 80's remake. This is really a remarkable collection.
So why not 5 stars? The package. Specifically the information. 1st complaint: the ridiculous discography that starts with 1975 and only lists compilations on Greensleeves/Shanachie. Why bother printing it if it's going to be so selective? Maybe under the heading "Also available from (us)", but to call it a discography is lame. The second complaint is that in light of the amazing liner notes from the likes of Pressure Sounds (whose 2 Pablo collections are righteous) and Blood & Fire the credits are quite skimpy: no dates or labels or even version information are listed consistently, why? I mean even Trojan usually lists more information. The booklet does feature some nice essays about the man, but little about the music itself.
So, really it's 5 stars for the music 3-4 stars for the package for a 4.5 star collection that should have been a 6-star+ box.

I am just adding to the voices disgusted by Christina Roden's writing on King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown, which Amazon.com used for their official review. Her so-called review is an insult to the music and its makers, besides not making sense.

For the record, Augustus Pablo plays mainly the melodica, which is an instrument played by blowing through while manipulating a small keyboard that is part of the instrument. Pablo also played various keyboards, including the clavinet. And no one "slowed" the music down to make dub. Dub is simply re-mixed reggae with the vocals all or mostly removed.

I could go on correcting Roden's misinformation, but you get the idea. Ignore Roden and read the other volunteer reviewers for additional proper info.

Those who like hip hop, techno, or any other musical development of the last quarter century would do well to acquaint themselves with this masterpiece. This is where remixing began and no one has done it better than King Tubby in the ensuing years. Able to reduce a song down to its core elements and still make it utterly mesmerizing, Tubby paved the way for virtually all modern music. This is an album to play at maximum volume, while the bass and the groove wash over you with that perfect riddim. You can't call yourself a connoisseur of music without getting inside this rhythmic beast.

Clavinet, flute?!?!?!?!? Augustus Pablo plays the Melodica people! And to say the album has "no names" on it! Maybe no names as far as pop music is concerned. Pablo and King Tubby are 2 of the most influential Reggae\Dub artists dead or alive!!!!! Comparing them to Bob Marley is equally as ignorant! Please review only items you have half a clue about!!! I don't know what this reviewer is talking about "...also known as Glen Adams Upsetters keyboard player...". King Tubby is Osbourne Ruddock ONE of the originators of the style weh call 'rub-a-dub' alongside Lee "Scratch" Perry and another lesser known producer whose name evades me. For real the reviewer don't know what the bumclat she is talking about! very pretentious to think she can talk some bull-isht and get away with it! Augustus Pablo plays the melodica primarily, which is a children's instrument, a small keyboard which has a baffle and a mouthpiece to generate the tones. Clavinet is a floorstanding keyboard instrument which generates sounds similar to an electric guitar, and on some Jazz fusion records occupies the space of an electric guitar i.e. Herbie Hancock "Headhunters".

To further clarify, the riddims herein are written and arranged by Pablo, voiced by various vocalists, notably Jacob Miller whose "Baby I love you so" is the foundation of the title track, and "Keep on Knockin" here in dub as "Keep On Dubbing". So these are dub versions of those tunes with many featuring Pablo blowing on top, therefor putting them in a 'Horn version' or specifically 'Melodica version' context. Semantics.

Anyway, King Tubby meets rockers is absolutely essential and needs no introduction, as it is maybe the most well known 'Dub' albums of all time. This newly issued CD looks great with the added tracks and hopefully correct tracking as previous reissues of this album had incorrect sequencing. You should buy this. Tubbs is eternally the master at the controls, Pablo is the heaviest producer next to Vivain Jackson, and his meditations onn the Melodica are trancendant.

This is a great choice for massage therapists looking for something a little different, though I recommend it for anyone. I've been listening to it for 3 years now, and not sick of it yet. Perfect for Lomi Lomi massage or just spacing out for an hour.

Nothing more can be said other than excellence. This is a well composed and flowing album from the melodica maestro. It opens strong and only gets better. Highly recommended piece.

I first got this album on vinyl back in high school during the early 80s. I was so entraced by it, I got my parents to buy me a melodica! I still have my melodica and I still have the vinyl record and both are in great shape, but I got the CD for the convenience and clearity. I was thrilled with the bonus tracks and the sound quality.

I had the privelage of seeing Augustus Pablo perform at NYC's Beacon Theater on Broadway. A tiny, thin man with amazing power to captivate! He wasn't showy or flashy and all he wore was a simple shirt and jeans, but man, it was a powerful show!

For those with varied eclectic taste, I think this album is to Augustus Pablo what I feel Canyon Trilogy is to Carlos Nakkai (Native American flute music). Its a defining album. In each case, the music is hypnotic and hauntingly beautiful. Even people who aren't real reggae fans can appreciate this album. Its not "too mellow" at all. Its just right!

If you love roots reggae, this album is a MUST have in your collection. This is the sound that made me fall in love with roots reggae when I was a kid and why I still love it now. Its not the sound of rap style reggae you hear today. Its totally classic reggae.

I only wish Augustus Pablo were still with us to make more beautiful music.

This CD...wow, what can I say? Like another reviewer said, Augustus was truly a musical genius. I was listening to this album one day and I noticed 15 minutes later that I had become hypnotized by the music! Beautiful melodies, chill basslines, tight dub drumming, it has everything and more. I really don't think it's possible for an album to be too mellow. This CD is just right. Even if you're not a fan of Dub, this album is for you.

Establishing a career in the overcrowded market of 'Dub' music is never going to be an easy task....unless your name is "King Tubby", "Lee 'Scratch' Perry" or "Mad Professor", standing out from the multitude of artists that have produced various Dub tracks or Remixes, or reinterpretations, is harder than we probably imagine. And the fact that Dub music is largely considered to be the preserve of either the 'Dreadlocked' or 'Permanently Stoned', limits its crossover appeal. Yet Augustus Pablo was either wise enough, or indeed forward thinking enough, to realise that merely creating a Dub album that didn't differentiate itself from any other Dub album, was going to be a pointless exercise....so Augustus tapped into a market that was largely untouched. The 'Melodic' spectrum of Dub music, by completely sidestepping the bass heavy sounds, and reverb-ladened echo effects that largely dominate Dub music, he was able to bring something uniquely his to the table. And with even more of an angle, he used the 'Yazoo' (considered to be a Children's harmonic instrument) and more importantly & significantly....the 'Melodica' (a harmonica with a keyboard), which would make up his organ-orientated form of Dub music, with superb use of Piano, Synthesizer, producing a sound far more relaxed and Delicate edge, than Dub music is usually given credit for.

Those hoping for the deep thumping bass, that makes up a lot of Dub music, will be either shocked or surprised to hear that, this is a million miles away from those sorts of Dub tracks, instead what Augustus does is make simple, melody-driven tracks that focus on the earthy, reflective and organic use of his Yazoo & melodica. Whether Its haunting Oriental-esque melody, or simple vocal lines that for all intents and purposes sound like a medative lullaby's, or indeed minor keys and prominent melodica lines , coupled with Pablo alternating rudimentary but spooky solos on melodica and organ over a jagged riddim, it's arguably all so beautifully implemented and produced, that its feels less like Dub and more mellow instrumental roots reggae. Its interesting to hear how Augustus takes that simplest of rhythms and builds tunes, arrangements around this central rhythm / idea, and the vibes are of the most relaxed kind, as the music never really gets past a slow-paced grooves, that languish over harmonious stoned groovescapes.

Augustus has made several absolutely essential albums in this career, and his simplified, stripped down, plaintive form of melodic-Dub truly deserved a wider-audience, as his music has the unique ability to express moods. But it, something contemplative or organic, it was a sound that was able to express moods in the way that various forms of 'Jazz' music is able to. His melodica is largely the key to his sound, and the simple instrument's unusual sound is hard to mistake for anything else, colouring and texturing the simple rhythms, in a oddly delicate way, yet the vaguely Middle Eastern sound of his melodica is immediately recognisable, and therefore makes his warm and compelling music that much more accessible. This is considered to be amongst his best albums (along with " King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown"), as the most impressive body of his work, and having thoroughly enjoyed this album, I whole-heartily recommend it to anyone thinking of picking up Augustus' work, as it is in turns: Mellow, downtempo, laid-back and beautifully rendered, yet also spiritual & possessing a dark and mystical ambience. Critics will point to the fact that the various tracks on his albums, aren't radically different from each other, and have a tendency to blend into each other. That is partially true, as it's very easy for his sound to wash over the listener, and before you realise it...your halfway through the album. But such criticisms should not dissuade potential buyers, as this is some of the most organically expressive instrumental Dub music, I've had the pleasure of listening to, and it's one of those rare breed of albums, in which you don't necessarily have to be in a certain mood to listen to, and you feel in a better mood for having listened to it.......Essential

This, my friends, is one of the finest collections of Augustus Pablo melodica instrumentals ever assembled, though it should NOT be mistaken for a set of "greatest hits." "Skanking With Pablo" often has a much looser, folksier feel than Augustus Pablo's dense, heavy dubs and dubbed-out instrumentals. A big concern with Augustus Pablo collections is that they can overlap with other collections, and sometimes you'll even see the same track given different names and resold...you'll find little of that here, as most of these tracks were pretty darn rare prior to this release. Happily, this set is more carefully annotated than just about any other Trojan Records set you'll find (or Pablo set for that matter), it gives a Pablo biography, dates of recordings, producers for the recordings, and enlightened and enthusiastic track-by-track commentary. So, basically, this is something that one might not always expect from Trojan Records; a labor of love.

For starters you'll find several previously rare tracks, and there will be little repetition with other Pablo discs. Sound quality is good by Trojan standards, with the more rare tracks tending to have the poorer sound. Several of the tracks are dubby, but most are on the instrumental tip, which really allows Pablo's melodica playing to show through. Pablo's visionary genius with regards to overall sound and mood shines through as well, even though he was working for other producers. The truth is, Pablo had a lot of say in what was going on with producers such as Herman Chin Loy and Lee Perry, and was often more of a co-producer for some of these works.

Every tack is a killer on this set, and the sequencing flows so very nicely that it is one of the rare collections that I like to listen to straight through. One of the things that stands out about this collection is the mood of the tracks (recorded from 1971-1977). Sandwiched between the dense, far-east funkiness of the opening tracks, and the swirling vortex of psychedelia created by the last three Lee Perry-produced tracks, is music which really lives up to the "Skanking" title. These are some great, summery Pablo masterpieces, with Pablo creating mesmerizing and irresistible melodica melodies over funky roots rhythms. Also there is no drum-machine or synth around to ruin the mystical, natural roots mood of the music. The vocal track "I Am Alright" with Gregory Isaacs turns out to be a real treat as well.

In my opinion, "Skanking With Pablo" is one of the top Augustus Pablo collections ever assembled, and should be equally appealing to newcomers and seasoned fans.

Final Verdict: TOPNOTCH ESSENTIAL SKANK and NO FILLER.

While the remastered CDs of Pablos' classics "King Tubby Meets
Rockers Uptown" & "Original Rockers" are produced with a heavy
bass thump, "Skanking With Pablo" is mastered with a bit less
heaviness on bass...therefore it comes across as more mysterious
and mystic sounding. So it depends on your mood. If you want
to hear Pablo with thunderous rootsy bass, listen to those first two CDs; but if, say, you don't want to disturb the neighbors, or it's early in the morning and/or you're looking for a mellower, mystic
mysterious (but no less rootsy!) vibe, then "Skanking With Pablo" is A+ top-shelf all the way. An absolutely wonderful CD.

Like the previous reviewer I don't know much about reggae, but I love this CD. The melodica is a pretty trippy instrument, and it has a very mellow vibe. This collection is both enjoyable and fascinating. Mostly instrumental, it's very laid back. The sound quality isn't always flawless, but these are old tracks and any defects don't detract overall. Buy this and you won't regret it.

If you like things that are weird, you will probably like this. It's a collection of some of Pablo's more obscure recordings from the 1970's. The melodica has a cool and weird sound, and Pablo plays it masterfully. If you don't know anything about reggae (and I don't), I recommend this album as an accessible intro. My only complaint (and the reason I gave it only 4 stars) is that the songs tend to get a little repetitive.

This is a fantastic CD for the student of reggae. Augustus Pablo creates low-key but intense reggae instrumentals. He combines the tough street sound of early reggae with his own mystically-oriented jams and the weird sonorities of the melodica to create something that is distinctly his. Not many people in any field of music can say that.

The recording does suffer from the circumstances in which it was recorded. They didn't have the best recording equipment, and occasionally Pablo's melodica is a hair out of tune. There is also something of a sameness to this CD, with too many songs in the same key following one after another. It could have benefited from more careful remastering and perhaps a resequencing of the songs.

But this shouldn't stop you from buying the CD. Pablo's music still has the power to lure you into listening to it over and over again, because as sparse as the music seems sometimes, there are actually many subtle things going on here that deserve a careful listening. And the arrangements and performances are top-notch in spite of the slightly dodgy recordings, with the best reggae musicians of the era featured to great effect.

Overall, I would recommend this for both serious students of reggae and for those who want to mellow out with something that's musically respectable yet easy on the ear.

One of the best records I've ever owned. Hands down Augustus' best. Different than King Tubby meets the Rockers, this is not a dub album. These are beautiful instrumentals. The rythms are solid, some of the best reggae rythms I've ever heard. The bass is thick and heavy, pulsing through the tracks like a gorilla through the jungle. The drumming is tight, with the snare hitting the offbeats of the offbeats of the offbeats. The guitars chicka with that sound only found in jamaica 1972. But thats not even the beginning of the album. Augustus Pablo's playing is incredible. These simple lines just float over the rhythms, sometimes copied or played off of on the piano or organ. The arranging is great too, these are perfectly crafted songs, simple, yet never boring. This music is cheerful, moody, spiritual, and down to earth, all at once. How does he do it? I have no idea.

The late Augustus Pablo's innovativeness can not be stated too strongly. Whether by his use of melodica as a lead and respectable instrument, or by his adaptations of Dub music into his own unique and instantly recognizable sound, Pablo was always cutting edge.

This lp, with "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown," are excellent primers into the world of dub music, and are essential listening for any newcomer right up to the most ardent of reggae fans.

Nearly 10 years have passed since I first acquired this lp, and many hundreds of listens later it is still fresh and innovative. THAT is the sign of great music, regardless of genre. How many cds can you say that about?

Dub organizer is one of the attention getter's on the Rebel rock disc. For the beginning intro to instumental reggae music, this is one the most important cd's for the beginner to have. The rebel rock Cd will bring plenty of enjoyable listening hours, to the collector,and also those that are looking for an alternative to the ninety mile an hour music of today. To find where todays music got it's start we must find it's roots. Augustus Pablo will be missed dearly, unlike the more commercialized artist that we hear about in the headlines, his music will live on . Live the life you love, and love the life you live.

Sorry for the 3 stars. It's great, but being my third Augustus Pablo, it doesn't sound much different than the others. Are there some repeat songs on here? It's nice and everything and I'll def hang onto it, but two were probably enough.

This remastered version on the greensleeve label does sound better than the older version plus this version includes some bonus tracks. The album is good but I have 2 minor complaints. I think the front cover art on the older version of Original Rockers looks more appealing and more authentic than this version and my second complaint is that about 3-4 songs on this album are different remixed versions of songs from the albums King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown and 1 song from King David's Melody. The versions of those songs on this album are at least mixed and recorded a little differently so it's not the same exact song. No big deal but I'm not too fond of repeated material from other albums. Overall this is a feel good album with good sound quality and it's worth buying for your pablo collection. If you buy this album make sure you buy this greensleeve version so you get the bonus tracks and the improved sound quality.

This has been, hands-down, my favorite collection of dub/reggae for over 20 years. If you are a fan of Pablo, this is a must own!
p.s. The other reviewer is dead-on. The Shanachie version is quite inferior to this version. My only complaint is the re-working of the artwork...oh well, I still have my original vinyl to look at (it was worn out years ago)

This is THE version to get of the classic Augustus Pablo album, "Original Rockers," indisputably one of the finest reggae LPs of the genre's golden era. The version released on Shanachie in 1991 suffers from poor sound, and only features ten tracks. This version, released by Greensleeves in 2006, has been sonically scrubbed for stunningly clear, colorful sound, and features 12 tracks instead of 10. In fact, out of the many Pablo releases I have, this one easily sounds the best, audio-wise. The two extra tracks on this issue fit right in, as they are extra-heavy Tubby dubs of "Tubby's Dub Song" (the original of which is actually more of a melodica instrumental) and "Brace A Boy." "Brace A Boy" is a DJ cut by Dillinger, but the extra version here cuts out the vocals and dubs the rhythm to the top. "Tubby's Dub Song (version 2)" is up there with Tubby's heaviest, most trippy dubs, and is as essential as anything on the original LP. In fact, I can't see listening to the album WITHOUT these two dubs now, they fit in so well. I like to sequence these extra versions right after the original versions on this album, as I find the flow quite natural this way, and it still ends with Pablo's haunting xylophone meditation "AP Special," as he no doubt would have wanted.

"Original Rockers" is definitive Pablo, a cohesive mix of instrumental and dub sounds which form a heady, transcendent listening experience. Most tracks are deep melodica instrumentals, although there are a few straight-out dubs, and "Thunder Clap," a funky clavinet instrumental on the "Ain't No Sunshine" melody. For me, "Original Rockers" is right up there with "King Tubby's Meets Rockers Uptown," and is part of what I consider the great trilogy of original Pablo LPs, along with "East of the River Nile." "Up Warrika Hill," "Cassava Piece," "Jah Dread," "Thunder Clap," and all of the others tracks are simply killer after killer after killer. The heavy bass, deep grooves, and visionary musicianship and production of Augustus Pablo make this one of the greatest Jamaican albums of all time, a statement I do not make lightly. The fact that this music was recorded at Tubby's and mixed by King Tubby and Prince Jammy doesn't hurt any either. This music has so much color, so much groove, and so much soul, that I have no doubt it will provide any true music lover with hours and hours of blissful listening, as it has (and continues to) for me.

Remember, my friends, if you want to get the quality release, make sure that it is from 2006, lists the label as "Greensleeves" and features twelve tracks instead of ten...trust me, you'll thank me when you hear it. Enjoy.

This is a reggae/dub album wich i heard first in 1986. It still is one of my favourites. pablo inna tough style. escpeccialy the use of what seems to be a metal bedbottom as percussion is wicked. the later stuff he produced are less beatifull than this or his el rockers album which contains also a lot of classics. it's a pitty that he died. Check North of the River Thames on On=U sound by Doctor pablo, also goos melodica dubs.

I have the deluxe version, which has four more tracks. These four tracks include two of my personal favourites. Since most places (including amazon) offer the deluxe and regular versions of the album for the same price, why not get the extra four tracks? If you want my rating on this version as it stands it would be a five star rating for sure, but I gave it four because there really isnt a reason not to buy the deluxe version instead.

Think King Tubby should be credited more on this CD; credits were not clear to me; but that is no big drawback, this is 5 star; "This is Augustus Pablo" though, is probably a safer bet, better release however.

Augustus Pablos instrument, the melodica; is sort of like a piano and flute combined, bring up, what some might call a middle eastern sound: One won't be dissapointed; on the straight and narrow path, songs with lyrics, known names, Bob Marley, etc. is a safer bet; but apparently, this disc has historical significance and Augustus is a splendid artist with his flute. It might make one think, of the pyramids and palm trees, Robbie Shakespeare and others appear on this disc.

If you are in the mood for lyricless reggae, a legend, dub evolution, try this.

You can't find a better pairing...King Tubby at the boards and the Rockers supplying the riddims. Music wouldn't be the same without the sounds found in this album.

There are about four (!) CD versions of this great Augustus Pablo LP on Amazon at the time of this writing. The version I am reviewing here is the "Above Rock" release. The "Above Rock" label was created by Clive Chin, the producer of this album and many others, to release his own material personally. The distribution is done by Prince Jammy's Jammyland. Heartbeat released a cd of this recording in the late 80s, but this set has two extra tracks, and is straight from the producer. Comments about the sound quality of the Heartbeat release give me reason to think that the sound quality is quite improved here, as it is quite crisp and clean; clearly transfered from master tapes. My only complaint is the minimal album notes...just a paragraph printed on back, though with some nice session photos.

This LP was recorded by Clive Chin at Randy's studio in 1973. Augustus Pablo (AKA Horace Swaby) had a lot of input in the arrangements, and was sort of a co-producer along with Chin. The session engineer was Errol Thompson. Photos from the session shows some of the musicians microphoned-up in the studio and playing TOGETHER, at the same time! In addition to the prominent melodica, Pablo plays some clavinet, piano, and some synth (just one track).

The music here is instrumental, though some dub touches are sprinkled about nicely. The line-up is very straight forward, and skanks it up in a crisp, early-regggae style. Instrumentation consists of bass, drums, percussion, keys (piano or organ) and guitar laying a nice foundation on which Pablo really shows his melodica skills. Musicians include Lloyd Parks, Carlton "Santa" Davis, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Ranchie McLean, Aston "Family Man" Barrett, and Ansel Collins. This is one of the clearest productions on which to experience Pablo's playing in its essence, and it holds together stylistically as an actual album. While, overall, the production does not go into as many wild places as Pablo's later 70s instrumentals, it often comes close, such as with the awesome "Arabian Rock," "Point Blank," and "Skateland Rock," to mention a few tunes where we really hear the birth of Pablo's mystical minor-chord "eastern" stlye. If "This Is..." is not quite as essential as Pablo's top three LPs, "East of the River Nile," "Original Rockers," and "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown," it is close, and a classic in its own right, utterly essential for any Augustus Pablo fan.

Many people believe that Original Rocker or King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown are his best works,I disagree. Every song on this CD is pure niceness. This collection supurbly displays Augustus's melodica abilties. This CD also contains two bonus that the orginal "Rebel Rock Reggae:This is Augustus Pablo" doesnt have,Java and Guiding Red(version of Heptones Guiding Star).

this is one of the best dubs ever put out by this legend in reggae i highly recommnd this to anyone who loves reggae dubs the great augustus pablo lives on gwaan gwaan!

Being a huge Augustus Pablo fan, I think this is his best album. Every song is a dub masterpiece with some very rare cuts included. His cover of the Jacob Miller classic, "Baby I Love You So", is outstanding. "King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown" is perhaps his best track ever and maybe the definitive dub reggae song. This album also includes tracks by some of his proteges including Delroy Wilson and Junior Delgado. If you buy only one Augustus Pablo album, buy this one. You'll be hooked for life.

This the music on this disc is excellent and it serves as a great introduction to the artist. Many tracks contain the original and the dub version, all of which are excellent. There isn't a single bad track on this whole set and many of them are superb. The sound quality of this disc is also good (it can be a bit shady on some reggae/dub/ska recordings). Another nice thing about this disc is how well it seems to flow together (while many compilations lack any cohesion whatsoever). Recommended... Also, if you happened to stumble upon this without really knowing about dub, look into King Tubby (who appears on a few tracks here), Scientist and Mad Professor.

The title says it all: 16 Classic rock-steady riddims that are truly rasta-licious! The very first track gets the fire burning, with Jacob Miller's undeniably authentic reggae wail. All the tracks are righteous, but highlights include the King Tubby/Pablo dub treatment of Miller's song (track 2), "Stop the Fighting" by Delroy Williams, and T.E. Track's inspirational "Isn't It Time to See." The disc features the production talents of Mr. Pablo, who appears to get the best out of these featured artists, inspiring distinctive collaborative efforts. Leroy Sibbles' number "Love Won't Come Easy" benefits immensely from Pablo's presence. I find this version superior to the orginal Heptones recording. And, the number by The Immortals "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down" is a hypnotic blueprint for the roots reggae sound. This disc will make a nice addition to any enthusiast's collection, and it is great for the novice because of the variety of artists sampled. Highly recommended by a knowledgeable fan.

This Cd is a great example of Augustus Pablo not only as a solo artist but as a producer as well. It starts off with Jacob Millers "Baby I Love You So" and it dub counterpart the classic"King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown". Each songs embodies the rockers sound that Augustus helped make famous.
