Me and my best friend from elementary school back in the 80's, could listen to this music for hours!

As big of a music snob as I am, I can't help but go back into my music collection and listen to some of the cds/tapes that I grew up on, namely '80s music. Having grew up in the '80s, I will always have a soft spot for '80s music. Bananarama is one of those '80s pop acts that I will always have a soft spot for. I just loved their music, namely "Cruel Summer", "Venus", and "I Heard a Rumor". While The Bangles and The Go Go's were more rock orientated, girl groups such as Expose and Bananarama were vocal groups. Yeah the music videos for "Venus" and "I Heard A Rumor" were pretty silly, if not stupid but the songs were so much fun to listen to. They are unbelievably catchy. The songs always sticks in my head but unlike Jennifer Lopez's music, I actually like Bananarama's music. My favorite Bananarama song definitely is "Cruel Summer", the ultimate summer song. Although Ace of Base did a fine job covering the Bananarama song, I definitely prefer the trio's version. I also adore "Love in the First Degree" and "Robert De Niro's Waiting". Although they didn't get any airplay here in the states (as far as I know), they were just as irresistably catchy as the group's more famous songs. The girls' harmonies were excellent. Gimme Bananarama over Wilson Phillips any day.

I used to love this group when I was a little girl and I used to listen to their songs on the radio and now I have finally found there songs I really do enjoy these songs because they take me down memory lane and I reminsce about all of the good times I had when I was a kid and basically I just like their music. I would recommend anyone who likes 1980's new wave music to buy this album this is a great compilation. My favorite songs on this album are: He was really saying something, Cruel Summer, I heard a rumor, and venus this is really a nice album and I would really reccommend anyone to buy this album!!!!!

Until the Spice Girls invaded the planet with their brand of Girl Power, Bananarama ruled the roost with their consistent brand of fun-don't-give-a-damn pop music, which only had one mission - Fun. This Greatest Hits collection explains the timelessness of the Fun Girl Three, dividing their worldwide successes into two part - the early years & the Stock Aiken & Waterman Years. Both parts yielded equal successes & one listen to this CD brings you back in time to when pop was accessible without being overtly marketed. From the summery tunes of NaNaNaNa (Kiss Him Goodbye) to the funky percussion of Cruel Summer, the Bananas brought a smile to the world. Messy hairdos & ripped jeans, the girls only relied on their music & attitude to sell records (hence saving all that money spent on designer clothes for going down the pub). The SAW years saw their star shining brighter than ever. Venus is perhaps the most brilliant pop song ever done - & almost 16 years later still has an oomph & longevity that few bands can legitimately achieve. Became a US No.1 also. I Heard A Rumour, Love In The First Degree & I Can't Help It ensured that the charts were sufficiently set alight. Personal fave is their cover version of Help! (with French & Saunders & Kathy Burke - comic & brilliant). One other irony is their cover of The Supremes' (who prior to the Bananas were the best selling female group ever) Nathan Jones. Proved the girls could sing & give a song their unique verve. Bananas, we salute you & all who have sailed in you.

I LOVED this song! As a little girl, I would listen to pop music stations for HOURS just to hear Bananarama's version of "Venus". And since I loved "Venus" so much-I started listening to their other songs and became a Bananarama fan. Their sound was very different-it couldn't be easily placed in any one musical category-which is why I love this Greatest Hits CD! It is still fun, carefree music that can make you move!

This Bananarama CD is better known outside the USA. And it is a pity it never got launched here. It is still very much an exciting compilation of some of the best-known Bananarama songs.

Yes, I am an 80's girl! This is just fun music that makes the day go by like a breeze. Robert DeNiro's Waiting has always been one of my faves of Bananarama. I Heard a Rumor makes me remember the video with the girls in all their costumes. This is just plain fun music.

Bananarama sux. It's true, none of them can carry a tune in a bucket. But truly, when you grow up listening to it, they immediately have this hold on you that you can't shake. So, it's "my era" music that I have to love to hate.

great music stands the test of time... always. there were so many groups in the 1980s, and they produced a string of hits. but do you listen to them and appreciate them adter ten or twenty, or more years... if you do, then they produced a memorable record.

bananarama, in my opinion, stood the test of time. all their hits are still cropping up in radio stations, cd players, ipods, computers, and what not.

they are fun, the songs are catchy and dancable. and though they are slowly being overtaken by the artists of today, they were unbelievably great, and atill aew...

this album represents a collection of their very first hits in the 1980s. and it is with great pleasure that i review them for the fun, lightness, dancability and staying power that they have in my collective memory.

Before you read this you need to understand that I am huge Bananarama fan. I adore these women because they used to make make more than great music - they taught us it was OK to have fun with the music. Now that said, I consider this to be the last great album that they cranked out before the group cracked up and decided to go with just Sarah and Kerin alone as a duo singing in tones that only dogs can hear. The truth hurts - you guys were better as a trio.

With Ms. Fahey (who I adore) and Miss Jacquie (who I adore as well, the trio really did great stuff and this CD captures the tail end of the great classic "BananaGlam" era.

This CD has the most noteworthy popular hits from Venus to the match up with Fun Boy Three. All of the song are beautifully engineered and the art work is great.

Evidently mid way through the planning Ms. Fahey decided to drop out and the group was lucky enough to find Ms. Jacquie Sullivan to step in and fill the hole left by Ms. Fahey's voice which anchored the trio and gave their vocalizations some traction. Sullivan did well and the change is virtually seamless in this compilation.

One disappointment is the lack of a track for their one underground dance hit Mr. Sleaze. However if you can track down a video copy of the Greatest Hits video tape you get Mr. Sleaze and the visuals from outtakes from their music videos as well. Its worth it to find it or at least view it on You Tube.

When this came out originally all those years ago it was quite a shock for those of us in the states who were their fans. We had no idea that Fahey left and had no idea who Jacquie was. Fahey's career, sad to say went nowhere after this CD came out and its a shame.

Sadly, without Fahey and her vocals, combined with her fashion sense and quirky knack for finding the right tunes, the group, now a duo, is a parody of its self.

One final note _ The group got back together some years ago for a one off recording of Waterloo for the television show Eurotrash. That recording is on an ABBA tribute album and its good - real good. Gives those of us who hope for a reunion something to wish for. Cheers!

Bananarama is one of my favorite pop groups from the '80s. Their music was a ton of fun to listen to and it still is for me to this very day. I recently got hold of a copy of THE VERY BEST OF BANANARAMA. I never thought about it until recently that the group was a precursor to The Spice Girls but a lot more fun and a lot less stupid. THE VERY BEST OF BANANARAMA is a comprehensive look at the group's past and present hits, with and without Siobhan Fahey. Yeah a lot of the group's songs are corny like "Robert DeNiro's Waiting" and "Nathan Jones" but Bananarama's music has always been a lot of fun to listen for me. My personal favorite songs are when Siobhan was still in the group. I absolutely love "Cruel Summer", "Venus", and "I Heard a Rumor". I don't consider Bananarama a guilty pleasure. I am not ashamed that I was and still am a fan of the British pop group today.

mmm.....I have their "Greatest Hits" and that's a truly magnificent piece of work.I was just wondering that how can somebody review a CD album when that title hasn't arrived at all in the country itself! He has to be kidding!!! In India so sorry that this title still isn't available......Based on 'The Greatest Hits" a review cannot be made to this title too.....What can I say to such buyers PLEASE AVOID THIS GROUP IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THEM AND DO NOT BLUFF UP NONSENSE!!!!OK??.....I would be sensible enough to avoid Bananarama if I did not like the songs from Greatest hits itself!! So why go for another compilation!!......Weirdos !As I said,Indian groups themselves are DAMN lousy and Bananarama have an advantage of teaching them what "girl-power " is ALL ABOUT.I would be geting this title shortly anyway and let me hear it....and get back here."Long Train Running" Is a real Diamond-hard dancey,bubbly,yummy take-on of the Doobie Brothers cover version.....I love Bananarama so much! This "Best Of" compilation is in celebration of 20 years of Bananarama. Can you believe that they have been around for 20 years? Although Keren and Sara now perform as a duo, this collection contains tracks with original member Siobhan Fahey and subsequent replacement Jacquie O'Sullivan.

Bananarama's original "Greatest Hits Collection", released in 1989, contained most of the hit singles from their (at that point) 4 London Records albums, "Deep Sea Skiving", "Bananarama", "True Confessions" and "Wow!". This updated collection covers a wide range of those tracks but now includes material from their last 2 London releases, "Pop Life" and "Please Yourself".

The stand out tracks for me are "I Can't Help It", "I Want You Back", "Only Your Love", "Preacher Man", "Movin' On" and "More, More, More". Not a noteable ommission but I would have like to have seen the 1989 remix of Cruel Summer and perhaps the new versions of "Venus", "Robert De Niro's Waiting" and "I Can't Help It" which can be found on Bananarama's latest studio album, "Exotica".

The girls still look fabulous and are apparently looking to make a comeback, although they have never actually split up. I for one am looking forward to it.

Bananarama is one of the most important music in the history of music. Beethoven, Mozart, Bob Dylan, REM - all of these different artists who get all the praise owe everything to Bananarama. This is what high culture is all about.

Good collection of Banarama's music. The album is overall a fun listen; it's good 80s girl band pop. The ones that got the big radio play are here [Venus, I Can't Help It, Cruel Summer] as well as some lesser knowns that are nice and pleasant discoveries [Love Truth and Honesty, Nathan Jones, and Shy Boy]. The album gets kind of weak toward the end, and the remakes of Na Na Hey Hey and Help are not appealing. Good pop overall though.

Siobhan Fahey left the group is excellent. Although they hit the Hot 100 11 times, only 3 of those songs made the Top 40 (Cruel Summer, Venus, and I Heard a Rumour). Those songs plus many of their other hits are included here. However, one thing I do hate is when a record company puts out a Greatest Hits package and leaves off some of the songs that were released as singles. Most Greatest Hits packages do this, and this one is no exception. The key tracks missing here are the title song from the movie "The Wild Life" (which peaked at #70 in 1984) and "More Than Physical" (which peaked at #73 in 1986). Since this was issued, they have issued a package called "The Essentials" which includes all of their Hot 100 hits (including the 2 songs missing on this CD). So, if you want all the Hot 100 hits, skip this one and buy "The Essentials". If you just want the Top 40 hits plus some great dance tunes, this will suffice.

(3.5 stars) Everyone's got to have their musical guilty pleasures, and I am certainly no exception. Right up there on my list is Bananarama, a band that produced music that no one would describe as deep, sophisticated, or consequential. But, you know what? There are times when I don't want to listen to music that is challenging or probing but merely want to be entertained. And when those moods hit me, there's a good chance you'll find me tucked away in a dark recess of my home tapping my toes to the bouncy pop of Bananarama, all the while looking around nervously to make sure no one catches me in this indiscretion.

That I would like Bananrama is curious considering that I despise boy-band and girl-group bubble-gum pop, which to me is nauseatingly cloying and pre-fabricated and sounds as if it's performed by automatons, not humans. By contrast, Bananarama's music is brimming with exuberance and coquettish playfulness and full of engaging hooks. Listening to Bananarama is the musical equivalent of flirting with a saucy minx whose come-hither enticements are just a tease. Insubstantial? Yes. Meaningful? Hardly. Fun? Absolutely.

The Greatest Hits Collection contains all the Banarama that you'd ever want (or need) to hear, including: the dance-`til-you-drop version of "Venus"; the catchy "Cruel Summer"; the glossy "I Heard a Rumor"; the jaunty "Shy Boy (Don't It Make You Feel Good)"; and the frothy "Love in the First Degree." Even the most cold-hearted cynic couldn't resist these lively tunes. So go ahead and indulge yourself in this guiltiest of pleasures. Don't worry; your secret's safe with me.

All right, this class is BANM-52, for those of you into 80's music studies, and the required text here is Bananarama's Greatest Hits Collection. I would've recommended their first and fourth studio albums, whose key tracks comprise this compilation, but they are criminally hard to get and/or out-of-print. No matter, this single CD collection will do.

For most 80's music fans, their barn-burning cover of Shocking Blue's "Venus" and "Cruel Summer" are their two most famous songs. Don't worry--they're here. Their fourth album Wow boasted five singles, all here, and that was when they exploded, becoming part of the Stock-Aitken-Waterman bubblegum machine. However, I would like to point out that the single versions of "I Want You Back" and their cover of the Supremes' post-Diana Ross hit "Nathan Jones" are on this collection, and are much better than the originals on Wow.

That's consistent with how I feel--Wow and Deep Sea Skiving were Bananarama at their best, their self-titled album being the worst.

Of the new tracks, "Love Truth And Honesty" would've fit in their Wow album, which figures as it was produced by Stock-Aitken-Waterman. And speaking of S-A-W, notice that eight of the fifteen songs here are S-A-W productions, including their cover of the Beatles' "Help!" If one thinks about it, the original was also quick-paced, and the Rams' version is just as bouncy.

With the exception of the new songs, this features the original trio of Sarah Dallin, Keren Woodward, and Siobhan Fahey. The Rams at their best--what else can I say? Believe you me, you won't slip with this one. OK, class dismissed.

OK, I got this as a bonus vinyl LP when I bought another album on Ebay. I didn't even play it for about 6 months. "Who the heck were Bananarama anyway?" I thought. But finally I checked it out, and now it's one of my favorite 80's albums!

Mmm, they've got it all together on this one. Songwriting, performances, and production are all fine, professional, even slick. But there's nothing canned about the songs here. Several are quite moving. Besides the well-known hits you will also get some sweet sleepers:

"Dream Baby" is a peppy, fiesty attitude dance you'll have in your head for about a week after buying this album.

"Robert DeNiro" is a bit haunting and mesmerizing.

This album is a treasure from a better time in music, when pop songs were about something other than violence, crime, guns, and drugs.

Great to have this album reissued, and to finally include Wild Life on it, but it's hard to believe they missed the opportunity to include 12" versions and opted for 7" versions instead! It would have been great to have the 12" versions of Cruel Summer, Robert DeNiro's Waiting, and the full version of State I'm In from the b-side of the "hot line to heaven" single. All of the reissues of Bananarama's catalog make it clear that fans hunger for bonus tracks, but there are still so many mixes of their songs that have failed to make it to CD at last.

Since back in the day in 1984 have loved Bananarama, especially this album. I really dig the bonus tracks included such as the Rough Justice single radio version, Cairo is really catchy also. The Wild Life is nice to finally have on cd, also Live Now a great song they execute so well, should have been on the album and released as a single. Most of all the song Through a Child's Eyes really shines remastered, such a beautiful, powerful song, I wish they would release this song, it is a hit. Who cares if it was done back in 1984, it sounds just as good today, it should be put on the next album they do, and released.

This reissue is way better than the US reissue. This album is darker in theme than the debut, but still very poppy & infectious, Cruel Summer & Robert Deniro's Waiting are classics & rank among the best the girls have done. The album has been remastered and has many bonus tracks, all of which are rare and terrific. The girls have finally been recognised for their talent & gotten some respect. God bless Rhino Records.

I really like the direction the girls have taken since Ultra Violet. There are a lot of driving beats and memorable songs on this CD. It's an absolute must for fans and also should be purchased by anyone who likes club music and remembers Bananarama from probably only Cruel Summer and Venus. It's sad that so many people have not kept up with them because they have REALLY been putting out some quality music over the last 19 years since the pop-ridden WOW days. If you haven't listened to Bananarama since you were in high school, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. Then go back and get the other 4! Keep them coming Sarah and Keren!!!!

I'm proud to say I've been a solid 'Nana fan since taking a chance and purchasing a vinyl 12-inch called Really Saying Something while going through the racks at Rhino, in Los Angeles, way back in '82. And while I'm as thrilled as the next Bananarama-fanatic that 'they're back', I must also be honest. And honestly, the girls still seem to be missing something, and that something is a London-divorcee named Siobhan Fahey.

Siobhan was the critical voice in Bananarama, the one who fought against the overly-slick excesses of Stock-Aitken-Waterman back in the WOW! days, the one whose idea it was to cover Venus, and (I've heard) was also the one whose voice was the 'weakest' of the three. Regardless of any vocal limitations, Siobhan's critical ear is needed on this release. Unfortunately, there's just too much filler - a problem harkening back to the True Confessions album, and a common one among Pop recordings. "Move in My Direction" is excellent, and "Look On the Floor" is actually BRILLIANT! But with the plethora of remixed recordings available for those two (British) chart hits, it seems as though even more scrutiny is brought to the other tracks on the album, and unfortunately, IMHO, they're rather weak. I realize that this assessment of DRAMA may anger some of my fellow Bananarama-diehards, but I would humbly ask them to look at ANY of the three Shakespear's Sister releases and identify ONE SONG that's weak, or 'filler'... it can't be done. And even the 1999 cover of "Waterloo", which reunited the three original girls to the delight of many, had SOME REAL MEAT TO IT, something to stick your teeth into (musically, of course)... To put it plainly, Siobhan is pure musical integrity - and that's precisely what Keren & Sarah are (sadly) still missing as a duo.

So, you might ask, why the 4-stars? The answer comes from the musical heart, not the musical brain, I suppose. I'm just too soft-hearted when it comes to these girls who created a musical dynasty and for a time, held the Guinness-Book world record as most-selling female group in the world, at the time surplanting the Supremes (!) They were so cool because you could tell they just didn't really give a damn or take themselves seriously at all, what with their gimpy dance-moves, 'PC before it was cool to be PC' song topics (Robt DeNiro's, Rough Justice, Hooked on Love) and their antics at the video taping of the Band Aid classic "Do They Know It's Christmas?", where they stood in the back, next to Jody Watley and behind the big blow-hard soloists like LeBon, Bono, etc. That was the essence of Bananarama, and what intially caught the eye of such luminaries of the time as Sex Pistol's Paul Cook and Specials/FB3's Terry Hall. BESIDES, even a (somewhat) weak Bananarama album is still much much stronger than any of the American crap that's out there, including Britney, Christina, whatsisface from N-Sync and every American Idol winner/contestant except for Fantasia!

Anyway, I say: if you're a fan of either Bananarama or the Euro-Disco genre, BUT IT! Otherwise, DEFINITELY get your hands on the "Look On the Floor" 12-inch mixes. And take a chance on the missing third 'Nana-er, and BUY SIOBHAN'S ELECTRONICA RELEASES! She's been causing quite a stir in the UK, DJ-ing and releasing INCREDIBLE stuff like "Bad Blood" (available on Amazon), "Pulsatron" and my fav, "Bitter Pill". TRIVIA NOTE: "Bitter Pill" is a track which Siobhan wrote, recorded, and then later sold to the Pussycat Dolls who spliced in a Donna Summer"Hot Stuff" chorus, changed the track's title, and had a major worldwide hit with it (congrats, Shuv). So, the Pussycat Dolls (vapid talentless mannequins) have ahit with it and la Shuv & Bananarama can't bust upper-echelon of Billboard's Hot 200? America, what the hell is going on?

I was anxious to hear an astounding modern yet retro dance disc from one of my favorite girl groups of the 80s. Unfortunately, instead of picking up on the latest influence of 80s music in dance music, what we get here is predominantly disco flavored tracks that sound painfully dated, with some Latin tones now and then. The only semi retro/electro tracks on here (and my favorites) are Feel For You, Love Bite, Your Love is Like a Drug, and Marc Almond's remix of Venus. The two lead singles "Move in My Direction" and "Look on the Floor" are not even the strongest tracks! And the remixes on their singles don't make them much better.

I appreciate the commercial direction the girls have taken, but you can still sound mainstream while being more sophisticated than this. Take a listen to the new Madonna or even the Kelly Osbourne(!) to hear some infectious melodies with an 80s flair that don't melt down into total cheese. Unfortunately, I just don't see US radio embracing any of the sounds on this disc.

But of course, fans of Bananarama should still add this one to their collection. It's listenable, if not up to today's standards.

This is a tremendous effort by Bananarama, perhaps their best yet. Every single track is good, and nearly half the album is outstanding material. This provides a bridge between the old and new Bananarama, and each and every one of these songs could be remixed into a club smash. If DJ's in the US ignore this release they are just stupid...but then again...anyway, if you are tired of the endless parade of mindless hip-hop drivel, then buy this CD and check it out. It is way better than anything on the radio across the United States. In any genre of music, period. People need to open their minds and ears as Bananarama shows the younger musical acts out there what the term FULL-LENGTH ALBUM means. EVERY SONG IS GOOD. Whether you like old Bananarama or dance-pop electronica in general, your collection is basically empty without this CD. That is how good it is.

Too many words are poverty, as they say in Greece. This is one of the best come-backs you'll come across. A pop-dance cd that will surely get your spirits high. "Look on the floor" and you'll find yourself dancing with the girls from "Venus".

Well, if you already have the original US pressing of this CD, you're in for a little shock here. Sure, it has a bunch of remixes and bonus tracks, but in order to cram those songs onto here, they have taken the 12" versions of Some Girls and Strike it Rich and edited them! Some Girls is now a little over 4 minutes verses its near 6 minute version, and Strike it Rich has gone from 6 minutes to under 3 minutes!!! Oh well, guess I'll be keeping two versions of this CD. For those who are wondering, The reissues of Deep Sea Skiving, Bananarama and True Confessions do NOT edit any of the original songs, yet still manage to squeeze on a load of bonus tracks.

When Bananarama hit No. 1 in America with their Stock Aitken Waterman-produced cover of "Venus," the all girl group reunited with SAW to record 1987's "Wow." It spawned more UK hit singles than any of their other albums, and it helped put Stock Aitken Waterman on the map as bonafide hitmakers with a then-Midas touch. The obvious hits ("Love in the First Degree," I Want You Back," "I Heard a Rumor") are here, but the album tracks "Some Girls" and "Strike it Rich" are just as infectious. If you savor perky dance pop with an energetic twist, you'll be in seventh heaven with "Wow."

This is the last Bananarama album to feature Siobhan Fahey. The music itself is a bit more dispoable at this point but this is still worth owning for the pop classics I Heard A Rumor, I Can't Help It, Love In The First Degree, & I Want You Back. This UK reissue adds non album b-sides like Mr. Sleaze & other rarities which make this even more valuable. Yes it's true this is not the pop classic that the previous 3 albums were, this is still a classic in it's own right & totally worth the price to any die-hard Bananarama fan, espescially since it's the last album to feature the original line-up.

True Confessions is classic Bananarama, always a good listen. Of course all the tracks sound clearer, and sharper remastered, a big bonus. New songs never heard before like Set On You, White Train, and especially Scarlett are a real treat to discover. Scarlett should have been included on this album, not sure why it wasn't. This remastered album is a must for Bananarama fans everywhere.

This one is even darker in tone than Bananarama (1984), although Venus & More Than Physical are dance-pop classics, the rest of the album is still very worth while and more bonus tracks make this a must for die-hard Bananarama fans (like me). Skip the US reissue and get this one instead, you won't be dissapointed.

i have been a fan of theirs since the early 80s.
it is just another cd of their hits.
if you are a die hard fan, i would recommend purchasing this cd.
if you have some of their cds, then you are fine.

For Bananarama completists only(both of you). The remake of "More,more,more" is a nifty dance tune but it's the only reason to own the album.

One of the best Bananarama Albums with a fine selection of songs.I would describe it as Bananarama meet the sound of Abba.They then pick up a couple of male soul backing singers walk into the middle of an orchestra and get produced by Stock and Waterman.
'Is she good to you' should have been released as a single.'Let me Love you one more time' is a beautiful song with a powerful middle 8 instrumental.
The extra B side tracks 'Another Lover' and 'Treat me right' are good fun.

Coming well after the girls' hey day, this album is now one that fans who had lost touch seek out to hear something 'new'. It also turns out to be the album that had a load of remixes released for its singles, all of which have now become highly collectible and hard to obtain. My original release of this CD came with a bonus disc of remixes of their PREVIOUS tracks from other albums. I only wish this CD had come with a CD full of the remixes of More More More, Last Thing On My Mind, and Movin On. Or the least they could have done was give us a FEW of those remixes, considering this disc runs 3 minutes short of an hour, leaving more than 20 minutes of unused disc space!

It is nice to have a couple of the b-sides though, and the rare Dave Ford remix of More More More is another pleaser.

If you already have the Very Best of disc, then you have all the important songs from this CD. Although the material was good, it simply didnt compare to their previous recordings with the PWL team. The Abba sound is nice. It works really well on "Last thing" and "Movin on".
Its almost as if they knew the end of PWL was coming and they had to get in one last release.

Another great album from Bananarama, the More, More, More, remake is really good. If you buy this album you will dig it.
