Barrington Levy

This CD is good if you are really into reggae beyond the tip of the Iceberg including Bob Marley. It's not superhappy and not exactly what you would sit by the beach and drink fruity drinks to. What it is though is damn good reggae music that tells a story, is great as atmospheric, and is more soulful and spiritual. Not a lot of his mainstreamed music as I understand it, but worth adding to your collection.

This is my favorite cd by far. I love all the songs on this cd. Just brings back a lot of memories for me listening to all the groovy tunes. I saw Mr Levy is concert and he's an awesome entertainer. Sixteen songs on this Cd... and I love all 16 of them.

I truly love this album and I play it as often as I can. However, dont think that it is 100% complete as no essential Barrington CD can be complete without Here I Come (Broader Than Broadway) which the album is actually named after but does not include. Nonetheless, still a great cd that could have taken the step up to superb with the inclusion of this one hit.

This is probably Barrington's finest album. I say probably because it's hard to pick a best Barrington Levy album, as they are all of high quality. This one, along with Englishman and Shaolin Temple, is produced by the legendary Henry 'Junjo' Lawes and mixed by Scientist @ Channel One Studios. All of these factors make these albums CLASSIC. So don't hesitate and grab all three! The goods await you!

20th Century Masters has issued Greatest hits compilations for everyone from Sublime to Earth, Wind and Fire, now they've recognized B.Levy, a pioneer in the roots rasta culture. This comp. has his most recognizable hits; to the person unfamiliar with his catalogue, by all means pick this up NOW...but to the ones already in possesion of these songs on mixtapes or other hits albums, just pass.

wow barrington levy is the best roots reggae vocal in reggae today ....this album lets you hear barrington at a very younge age just about all of his best work is on this album...i bought it for the song "collie weed" its hard to find but after listening to this album EVERY song Grows and grows on you and now everysong on this album is important to me and i am stoked to be alive after buying this cd!

FATMAN PRESENTS...DUB CONTEST: The dub "contest" is a concept closely associated with the sound system "clashes" that became increasingly popular in Jamaica and elsewhere - particularly in England, where promoter Ken "Fatman" Gordon is based - in the seventies and early eighties. As is the case with this reissue, a dub contest basically amounted to a showcase for two (sometimes more) producers, engineers, or other artists, usually presented on opposing sides of a long-player. Some well known and (relatively) widely available examples include the rather underwhelming King Tubby versus Lee Scratch Perry match-up, AT THE GRASSROOTS OF DUB, and a later, greater meeting between Prince Jammy and Scientist, BIG SHOWDOWN.

Prince Jammy is clearly the contestant with the biggest reputation here, and his sides are suitably impressive, even breathtaking at times, like the tough JAMMY'S A NO FOOL, which is the version to Johnny Clarke's PLAY FOOL FI GET WISE; or the stripped-back spiritual, JAMMY'S A SATTA, which versions Clarke's cover of the classic SATTA MASSAGANA. Crucial Bunny might not be immediately familiar to some listeners, but as an in-house engineer during the hitmaking heyday of the Channel One studio, his name (sometimes given as Bunny Tom Tom) was attached to countless heavy-hitting singles and long-players alike. In fact, Bunny matches Jammy's pretty much punch for punch, with the menacing BUNNY IS CRUCIAL, and the warm, summery BUNNY NO EASY as standouts. Rounding off the original release programme, Fatman has dusted off four additional dub plates - two a piece for both Jammy's and Bunny - including the superb FEEL JAMMY'S SPIRIT, a deeply dubbed-down version of Delroy Wilson's take on the Wailer's timeless PUT IT ON. Taken as a whole, this is a highly polished reissue, complete with sleeve notes by celebrated reggae writer - and Auralux proprietor - David Katz, tracing the roots of the Jamaican sound system way back to the late 1940s. DUB CONTEST is recommended without reservation.

By the way, the "contest" concept is alive and relatively well today, in large part thanks to Jet Star's ongoing Toe 2 Toe series. The latest edition (volume 9, I believe) features the amazing voice of Jah Cure in competition with the gifted Richie Spice, and is well worth checking out if you're labouring under the mistaken belief that roots music is dead and gone.

Linval brings out the best is a hit list of artists from the golden age of dancehall. You should buy this CD just for Jr. Reid's "Mr. Bigman" alone, but there are many other gems on here as well. A wonderful release from one of the greats in reggae.

For anyone who loves reggae this is a must have. I often do not like compilations CDs in reggae, there is no common thread and as a whole, the songs don't work together. But this release works from start to end. There are amazing tracks here from artists like Jr, Reid, Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, etc. Linval Thompson put his stamp on reggae with these productions. You have classics cuts here that helped start the dancehall revolution. A must for listening in the car, for a Saturday night party or just chilling with the head phones. Another gem Easy Star!
