Big Daddy Kane

1988 was a pivotal year for me. I turned 20 that year, and it was also the year that I feel in love with Hip Hop, after hearing PE's 'Rebel without a Pause'. It was also the year that that this, BDK debut LP, was released onto a eager public. We had already been primed as to the lyrical prowess of this Brooklynite, due to the single release of 'Raw'. This is a classic release from the golden age, with only one bad track 'The Day You're Mine', which set the tone for the battle that Kane had with himself, in terms of being a battle type MC, or a Love God.
Despite being 20 years old, this hasn't aged a bit. Personnel favorites are, well to be honest, like my children, I find it hard to pick out one.
One CD that to my mind should be in any Hip Hop lovers' collection.

loved this back in 89 back in this era of rap rappers did'nt need 12 guest stars and 10 producers kane just does it alone fresj rhymes and all and mr. cee's scratches are def gotta .love the james brown samples too kane samples classic jb tracks like I'm coming, I'm black and i'm proud, the payback, mama feelgood, get up, get into and get involved and others favorite tracjs ain't no half stepping, and raw biz markie stops by on just rhyming with biz classic 88 was a great year for kane.

Yes, this is a CD mostly full of bragging, saying he's the best,but he does it well and drops some of the best battling lines ever. Seeing the lyrics will stun you, but his flow is one of the best ever. That's what clinched this record as a timeless record. Let's breakdown the album...

We start off with "Long Live The Kane". Which is a mix of political and battling rhymes. "No I'ma not Chinese/its just rhymes like these/That destroy an MC/with black belt degrees". 9/10

It is followed by "Raw(remix)". The original is what made KANE an underground figure and the impact of that one song was like an earthquake. Dropping jaw dropping rhymes with an untouchable flow. The chorus scratching is crazy. The entire song is filled with great lines and doesn't go more than 3 lines without saying something amazing. 10/10

"Set It Off" is in the same breath but even better flow and a better beat. What makes it better is that it starts right off the bat and the song just flows through. 10/10

Then is the loveman Kane that we will mostly see on his next albums, "The Day You're Mine". Some consider this filler, which I don't get. Yes, its different from the rest of the album, but that's the point. He wanted to cover the four major styles of rap(battling,comedy,political and love). Anyway, yes its cheesy but its a great love song. Kane continues his flow and nice lyrics even though its a different style. 9/10

"On The Bugged Tip" is a great team-up song with an unknown rapper, Scoob. Very nice and both do some rhymes. 9/10

Next is the infamous, "Ain't No Half Steppin'". No words can describe this song and theres a reason its so infamous. "You're just a butter knife, I'm a machete". 10/10

"I Take You There" is the political track on this CD". He's talking about a fantasy place where there is no violence, welfare, etc. Just forever peace and harmony. Amazing stuff. 10/10

"Just Rhymin' with Biz" is just that. They're basically rhyming with no topic. Funny stuff and Biz outshines Kane, crazy uh?. 9/10

"Mister Cee's Master Plan" is a song toward his DJ. Telling him thank you for the times and such. Its a good track but its one of the weakest tracks on this CD. 8.5/10

Another political song, "Word to the Mother (Land)". Very nice, but the beat is weird and brings down Kane. Sounds like he ran out of rhymes and is trying to make a short song, long. Still good but the weakest here. 8/10.

Closing Comments: As you can tell, Kane seems like he ran out of rhymes but the standouts are amazing. If you like Jeezy, don't get this. If you like hiphop, get it. If you wanna know hiphop and its history, get it. If you wanna know where these "battle" rappers got their inspiration from, get it. Classic, golden age hiphop. This is true old school and props to Mr. Marl for providing the production, as always. 5 stars.

Kane is the best emcee of all times, Rakim, G-Rap, Masta Ace are all nice. But nobody touches Kane. Why? Because he had a veratility that made him ahead of him time. This album isn't the best album of all time, but it's the best album of it's time. Kane outshines everyone, because he can do it all. Nobody else was battle rapping, smoothed out, a pimp and a teacher all on the same album. And Kane was the original sex symbol of Hip-Hop (sorry LL)
"Ain't No Half Steppin" is so smooth, but lyrically Kane kept it raw. "RAW" is as the title says. "Set It Off" shows Kane can rap ultra fast and still come off. Listen to his flow on any song off the album, it's meticlious. He pronounces every word so clearly, I honestly would put his flow on this album, which is 15 years old up against anyone today. And probably would still have it give it to Kane for most incredible flow. Every emcee today was either directly influenced by, or influenced by somebody who was influenced by Kane. He is that damn good, period.

This classic debut showcase all his talents. When he was young and when nothing was or could hold him back. This album is one of the blueprints of hip-hop. Melle Mel said "hip-hop is to pick up the mic and CRUSH everything in front of you". Kane killed the mic and the rumored beef with the other greatest MC of the era, Rakim, had us on the edge of our seats. Until this day, his rhymes have maintained their intensity and even in 2006, are still considered to be some of the most lethal battle lyrics ever spit. I can't say no more what's already been said numerously.

Every track on 'Long Live The Kane' is a truly classic. The tracks that steps up to me are "Set It Off" "Just Rhymin' With Biz" "Ain't No Half-Steppin" and "Raw."

I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hip-hop essential to hip-hop fans from every division.

Big Daddy Kane does not get his just rewards. This rap music helped get it going. BDK was awesome back in the 80s and buying this on CD 20 years later brings back great memories of when rap was rap and not so much crap now. Get this one for a good rap history lesson. ENJOY!!

The first song I ever heard from BDK was Aint No Half Steppin. I instantly fell for his sharp flow and witty rhymes. This album was the first album I ever had of Big Daddy Kane. "Its A Big Daddy Thing", "Another Victory","Mortal Combat", "Smooth Operator" are all classic hip hop gems that should be ingrained in the minds of all hip hop heads. Even though I like I Get The Job Done, I usually weary when I hear commercial culture icons like Teddy Riley, Puffy, etc making tracks with rap gods like Big Daddy Kane, Krs-One, Kool Moe Dee etc. BDK rips it live at The Apollo with Wrath Of Kane. BDK also has you covered if you're looking for songs ofr substance with tracks like Children R The Future, Calling Mr. Welfare and Rap Summary(Lean On Me remix). MR Cee flexes his skills on the turntables on The House That Cee Built and Big Daddy's Theme is his own score. There are two tracks I could do without. Pimpin Aint Easy feat Nice and Smooth and On The Move. The rest of this album is cool with me. Bottom Line: It's A Big Daddy Thing is one of the best releases of 1989 and is recommended for your collection next to Long Live The Kane. BDK had yet to dissapoint when he first came out and this album showed you why he is a rap veteran that deserves all the respect that he gets. His flow was phenomenal back then and it still sounds good now. Dont miss out on this one if you're a fan of real hip hop. Standouts: IT'S A BIG DADDY THING, ANOTHER VICTORY, MORTAL COMBAT, SMOOTH OPERATOR, CALING MR WELFARE, WRATH OF KANE, THE HOUSE THAT CEE BUILT and RAP SUMMARY(LEAN ON ME REMIX).

This album is real hip hop. Intelligent, flawless lyrics, killer flows blows anything current out of the water. One of the top MC's and albums of all time.

This record was great for so many reasons.

Rhymes:
Kane was a wordsmith like no other. He could spit rapid fire battle rhymes or he lay it on smooth for the ladies. In fact, Kane could combine the two! "Smooth Operator" finds Kane destroying his competition "in a calm manner" while still loving the ladies.

Beats:
The variety of sounds on this record is delight to the ears. "Young, Gifted, and Black" gives you that '70s Blaxploitation feel. The sampled horns behind Kane's rhymes takes you to another place. It's smooth, but not soft. And who can forget "I Get the Job Done"? Teddy Riley's percussion arrangement is sure to keep the head nodding back and forth.

Style:
This was one of the intangibles Kane brought to the game. In the videos Kane sported three piece suites, and slick warm up outfits. His demeanor and body language were both aggressive and smooth simultaneously. That dichotomy seems to be lost on many rappers today. Kane's bravado never overshadowed his fierce intelligence. In fact, Kane's gift was his ability to take that aggression and bravado and channel it through his incredible ability to articulate and construct with his words.

If you truly love Hip Hop, you must have a copy of this in your collection.

1989 was truly the year of the BDK, with a fitting album like this. Who didn't like "Smooth Operator"? I didn't care for the "Lean On Me Remix"; I prefer the original that appeared in Morgan Freeman's movie "Lean On Me". Everything else was da bomb!!!!!

I used to listen to Big Daddy Kane while growing up. I was a sophmore when the song Very Special came out. This whole CD took me back to my teens and the wonderful times I had while listening to his music. Very Special is still one of my very most favorite songs. The whole CD is filled with great songs, going from 1988 to 1993. You will recall some songs he sang from Yo MTV Raps. Great CD. Everyone that likes Big Daddy Kane or Rap in general should buy this CD. One of the very best CD's ever created. Art at its finest. This CD is "Very Special"!

I liked this Cd, it brought me back to the old days, and made me remember when I was young and foolish. I tell my kids about this kinda music as compared to the music of todays Hip Hop and R&B,. If more of todays Artists could put out music like this, the world would be a safer place for our kids today.

To me, I find Bigg Daddy Kane one of the most talented rappers to ever touch the mic. I've heard very little material from him, probably because I was in dipers when this man was making hits. To me, having "The Very Best Of Big Daddy Kane" is a wonderful starter kit to knowing his legacy back in the late 80's. While listening to this CD, I understand why Kane was such a big name back in the day. His flow was amazing. Every rhyme he says is on point. The linear notes inside really expains in detail about Kane's legacy from the days while he was in The Juice Crew.

Now the songs themselves are great. A lot of the songs are from his first two albums "Long Live The Kane" (1988), and "It's A Big Daddy Thing" (1989), with only a few from "A Taste Of Chocolate" (1990) and "Looks Like A Job For..." (1993). I believe his biggest hit was "Ain't No Half Steppin'" which has one of the best beats I've heard in a minute made by Marley Marl. Every rapper seems to make refrence to that song, and I can see why. Another song that really stuck out to me when I first heard it was "Smooth Operator" which also has a nice beat. And his voice in that song was deep, I see why the ladies loved the man.

We get a few treats here on this album. There is "Wrath Of Kane" that was recorded live from the Apollo Theatre, which has fans screaming at the top of their lungs showing love for Kane. I haven't heard the album version yet, but this one here is good as well. Then at the end of the album we get "Give A Demonstration" that was an outtake from his "Prince Of Darkness" (1991) album. I personally don't see how was an outtake. Hearing that song really shows Kane's versitale lyrical skills throughout that song.

So there we have it. One of rap's biggest icons best songs all here on one CD. This CD is really a starter kit to Big Daddy Kane. A lot of rappers chipped their flow off of Kane, like Jay-Z and Big L (no disrespect) and some people never realized that. All these people who listen to the radio and claim that some artist who debuted some 3 or 4 years ago is the best rapper alive really need to listen to artists like Big Daddy Kane and experience what origionality is all about. I didn't know that Kane was one of the first people to wear jewelery and drive nice cars and get upscale ladies, before everybody and their mother in rap music were doing that. Talk about one hell of a trendsetter.

There are a few tracks I want to hear though that are not on here. I heard he made a song with the late Barry White and that has me curious to what it sounds like. Also none of his songs from his last two albums "Daddys Home" (1994) & "Veterans Day" (1998) are on here...and from what I heard, they were not as good. But if you are a fan of hip hop and haven't heard of anything from Kane, this album is what you should get.

When I listen to folks like Big Daddy Kane, it amazes me that today's rappers think they're "the best rapper alive." You have got to be kidding me! I can't think of one rapper who is on today's "hip hop" magazine covers that can outdo Kane. This man took metaphors, similes, multisyllabics, rhythm, and competition and annihilated them. I love this album. I added his page to my MySpace page and I could just sit and listen to it all day. "Smooth Operator" and "Set it Off" are my favorite cuts on here, but I could let every single one of these songs play out. I must be getting old because I'm at the point where when I want to go to a club, I specify what kind of music the deejay must play for me to even drive into the parking lot. Remember when hip-hop consisted of something past how much your car/jewelry cost and how many hoes you had? Man, those were the days!

I was at a record store a while ago, and came accross this '93 release in the recent arrival bin. I'd never heard a song off this beforehand, but Kane is one of my favorite MC's of all time, and his first two albums get constant play in my stereo. I decided to get this anyway, and I'm not dissapointed.

His first two albums are beyond classic in the Hip Hop world, and his third wasn't bad, but it wasn't on the highest level. His fourth wasn't horrible, but to this day, I'll say it's the worst album he's released in his career. On this album (his 5th) he clearly resurfaced. He came back strong, and aggresive, and proved that he still had skills. Most of his first audience had grown up, or out of him. This was clearly aimed for what would be his newer audience. I really like the way he doesn't modify his subject matter, or himself to try to win over their respect, though I suppose the image is more street oriented than anything he released before this.

Personally, this is my 3rd favorite album by Kane. Because it's not "Long Live The Kane" or "It's A Big Daddy Thing" people sleep on this. For a while I did, and take my word for it - that's a big mistake. Though I wouldn't say this is 5 star material, it's a solid 4. Definately worth checking out if you're a fan of this legendary MC.

One of the most dopest Mc's alive, The Big Daddy Kane is still at it with hard rhythms, humour and dope lyrics. In my opinion the album was O.k not as good as "It's a big daddy thing" but nevertheless what you would expect from the man himself.

Like a lots of things in life, it's only with the passing of time that you learn to really appreciate things. Bid Daddy Kane had the misfortune to be in his prime in the Golden age of Hip Hop, with the likes of Rakim, LL Cool J, KRS-One, Kool G Rap, as his peers. Oh for a BDK now. This was his last release for Cold Chillin', and after this time, he was M.I.A. But what a CD to sign off with. This CD, too my mind, also highlights his weakness, wanting to a rapping about love, when most of his fans wanted him to be hardcore (listen to the `Prelude', where the great man addresses the situation himself) This CD is very hit & miss, but it showcases a man at the peak of his abilities. The lead single was this CD was' How U get a record deal'; with a very catchy video (check out you tube!) One of the highlights of this CD is' The Beef is on' which I can only describe as RUFF, true vintage Kane, in gangster mode. .'Stop Shammin' deals with the fakeness in the hip hop music industry (still relevant today!), whilst his dancers, Scoob & Scrap get on the mic on the afore mentioned `Here comes Kane, Scoob & Scrap'. Any fan of BDK should have this in their collection, and witness a true hip-hop GREAT.

You ask most real hiphop fans to name the best that did it on the mic and alot of the time you'll hear Kane being mentioned amongst the list. His rapid fire delivery added to his witty lyricism and his overall charisma over the ill beats captivated heads from the second he gripped the mic. After releaseing classics such as "Long Live The Kane" and "Its A Big Daddy Thing" and 2 alright follow ups he resurfaced with this awesome album. From the opening title track to the smooth outro it bumps along nicely with a great mixture of his masterful wordplay, ill metaphors ("my rhymes are like spandex, they make any a** seem good")and smooth tracks like "Very Special" and "Give It To Me". The highlights for me were when Kane ripped tracks apart with fierce flows on tracks like "Looks Like A Job For...", "How U Get A Record Deal?", "Chocolate City", "Rest In Peace", "Ni**az Never Learn" and "Nuff Respect(remix)". 2 other standouts were the brilliant story orientated "The Beef Is On" and the message filled "Stop Shammin'". Another plus for this album was the versatile, hard, bass heavy production from Easy Moe Dee, Trackmasterz (before the went mainstream) and Kane himself. The only 2 weak tracks in my opinion were "Brother Man,Brother Man" and "Very Special", other than that its excellent, even if its sounds alittle bit dated at times.

It's too bad Cold Chillin' Records went down hill. The majority of their releases you can't buy any more, and all but two of Big Daddy Kanes albums are plagued by this, including this album (which explains the lack of reviews)
Big Daddy Kane is hands down in the top 10 list of greatest MC's (if you ask me, I'd say top 5) He came around the exact time as Rakim, and though he doesn't get the credit, he's definitely on the same lyrical level. His first two albums are straight classics, his 3rd and 4th albums he tried to go R&B, which unfortunately didn't turn out too good. Fortunately he got back up on his 5th release "Look like a Job For..." A year after that he released this, which is equivalent to the one before this. The only problem I have with this is, there's 4 weak tracks (due to Big Scoob ruining them) but the remainder of the album more than makes up for them.

The production on here is dope. Premier produces a track with a young Jay Z, and 'ol Dirty Bastard. The rest is great as well.

Stand out tracks:
"That's How I Did 'Em - (I don't think I've EVER heard Kane spit this much fire ... ever) If anyone says Kane isn't one of the best MCs, play this track and put 'em in their place.

"Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed"

If you're a fan of Big Daddy Kane, you'll be an even bigger one after you get this slept on album ... seriously, I can't believe how underrated this is.

This is an album that I found abit frustrating at times and exceptional at others. The main problem for me was the most irritating voice of any mc Ive ever heard in over 15years of listening to hiphop, Big Scoob, who appears on no less than 4 tracks and completely ruins them. He's better known as one half of Kane's dancers Scoob+Scrap and he really should have stuck to just that. The ironic thing is Ive never really found him as annoying on Kane's other albums, ah well... The good points however far outweigh this minor negative point. The production from Kane, Easy Moe Bee, L.G., Kool T, Da Rock and the one+only DJ Premier is all top notch. The rhymes from Kane are what we've come to expect, sharp, original, witty and skilled like no other. Unfortunately he sings abit in the middle of his flows, even though he does that on his other albums he just overdoes it at times here. Apart from that his flow is flawless. Tracks like "Daddy's Home", "Lyrical Gymnastics", "Thats How I Did'em", "The Way Its Goin'Down", "W.G.O.N.R.S." and "Let Yourself Go" showcase his lyrical prowess expertly. "Lyrical Gymnastics" and "The Way Its Goin'Down" in particular are Kane at his peak, breathtaking. Both "Sex According To The Prince Of Darkness" and "Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed" are were his smooth sexcapes come out to play to great effect. Apart from Scoob's verses in tracks like "In The PJ's" and "Show N Prove" they are also decent tracks that enhance then album. Overall its not as consistent as his "Veteran's Day" and "Looks Like A Job For...." albums but its still a nice+necessary addition to the Kane collection.

When the first time i bought this album, i didn't what i'm going to hear, cuz i never heard Kane's rap before. Every songs in this album were well handled except the skit which is allright at the first time hear but you don't want take more after. You'll find a lot of gems that's includes an allstar collabo produced by Primo in "Show and Improve" featuring Big Scopp,Sauce Money,Shyheim,"Mr.Strickly out from a Brooklyn Zoo" ODB, and up and coming Jay-Z. The last two names steal the show, each with their distinctive style. Nice to hear young Jay-Z fast rap, it's added a fresh flavour on the track, and ODB crazy as usual and he even borrowed his lines in this track on other WU-mate production (RZA's Kiss of The Black Widow).The other songs was tight both musically and lyrically every song take you into another trip on Kane's world eventhough it's released almost 10 years ago, the beat never sounds old and the lyrics still relevant on today. This album improve that Kane still one of best MC to count in the middle of 90's beside handfull of new comers and golden era of gangsta rap.

I understand that some of the filler on this album is not good, but there are many songs on here that are among kane's best raps. For instance, the two strongest tracks on the album "float" and "prince of darkness" show why kane was the original smooth operator. "Death sentence," would blow your speakers wit the pumpin' bass and clearly exhibited BDK's rapping skills. "Git busy" and "Brother, Brother" have a silky positive freestyle. True, there are bad songs on this album, but in all fairness, there are great ones too.

well i am not one of those who follows people blindly i hear the stuff for myself, people visualise kane as a hard spitting battle mc so he didnot cut it with this album but just listen he has made a smooth album, it just shows the mans flexibilty
if you do like BDK i suggest you add this to your collection and finish and respect the great big daddy kane

I don't know whats with the haters who reviewed this, but ignore them. If you liked any of his previous 3 albums, you will like this. Personally I feel this is contender for his best album. Kane is sharper than hes ever been, his flows are flawless. Rest assured, Kane spits some fire on this album. This album marks his further acsension on the mic, with some instances of his rhyme spitting reaching blinding speed. The beats I was also very impressed with. They are definantly more experimental and straight hip hop than what some people here gave him credit for. Kane proved he didn't really need Marley Marl or Prince Paul, he could handle the beats himself. The only time on the album where he went real R&B was the chorus on track 2 and track seven. Track 7 is more of a talking skit/song like the one with Barry White from Taste of Chocolate. These are easily overlooked, and I think it holds no bearing on the rest of the album. This is also one of Kane's longest albums, and I think its solid all the way through. There are also classic guest spots from Q-Tip and Busta Rhymes. Don't sleep on this, your hip hop collection isn't complete without it.

Those who claim that this album sucks knows nothing. This was waaaay better than "Taste of Chocolate." That album sucked. It was too unfocused, R&B and weak. THAT one only had two good songs on it.

This on was BDK's last great album. After this, he would forever be lost... On this album you get to hear the last remains of the BDK that people loved. This was his last traditonal BDK style before he messed himself up totally.

First their is the tile cut. Yes, the one where (corny) Tupac took the beat from. BDK should release that as that was one of the hottest tracks. "Brother, Brother," "The lover in You," "Groove with it," "Come on Down," and even "Get Down" are all hot in one way or another. You cannot tell me that this was was not on. Some people ignored this because he released his more R&B/pop type songs in an effort to go platinum, so this hot album was not as appreciated as it should have been. Trust, this is one of his better ones. "Worse than Taste of Chocolate...?" Please.

I wouldn't say it was off the hook. BDK hit his peak at "taste of chocolate". this has a few funky ... tracks. the beat on git bizzy is funky ... and the title track is something to get with ur girl to? but beyond that it's all down hill form there. a shame too. BDK was one of the best artists of the time. the hardcore gangsta revolution killed him as well as cold chillin records going out of bizzness. (thank the diabolical biz markie for that one. gotta ask permission before ya sample bro!)

This is a Big Daddy Kane product. Laced with funky beats, comical and dope lyrics. My favourites are " Cause i can do it right ", "It's hard being the Kane", "No damn good " and my best one "Mr pitiful". Big daddy kane is himself in this album it's seriously funny. If you enjoy "It's a big daddy thing", "Looks like a job for the Kane" and "Long live the Kane" three of his previous albums, then you'll like this one.

Its hard to believe that this album was released 17years ago and is still off the hook. Its basically a fun album that reminds you of the type of hiphop that used to be out and influenced so many artists like Nas, Biggie and Jay-Z (whom Kane made him his hypeman and one of his 1st appearances on the "Show N Prove" track from his "Daddy's Home" album). Kane is widely credited as one of the finest to ever do it, a legend and an icon. Kane's delivery and versatility has always been one of his strongest points but at times its also been his Achilles heel. Tracks like "All Of Me" and "Big Daddy vs. Dolemite" were very difficult to get into as a result, compared to the rest of this album. The other 9 tracks, intro and outro are perfect even after this amount of time. The beats are excellent. Both funky and smooth. Kane's rhymes are outstanding with a vast array of wit, humour and intelligence. His delivery is sharp as a ginsu, as usual. The standouts from the remaining 9 tracks were "Cause I Can Do It Right", "Its Hard To Be The Kane", "Who Am I?", "Keep'em On The Floor" and "Put Your Weight On It". A definite must-have for any Kane/rap fan.

this is the last one that truly shows why kane is one of the best mcs ever to pick up a mic. like i said, i wish that he was more consistent with his other albums. this one is pretty much like the other one.....many styles.......sharp delivery. however, this one lacks that oomph of the first two. i just wonder if he would be talked about more if he made two to four more essential recordings. nevertheless, kane is the man!!!!

4.5 stars - Kane's 3rd outing proved to be the last one to showcase the King as he should be remembered. Production by Juice Crew chief Marley Marl is solid as usual. King Asiatic Nobodoy's Equal brings the smooth heat once again. Collaborations with Barry White, Gamilah Shabazz (Malcolm X's daughter) and Dolemite broaden the album, but still fit within the Kane coolness. Of course, he has a few songs to brag about how slick he is, but he does show a deeper side on a couple of tracks as well. Not his best album, but still light years ahead of most of the bubble-gum-pop-rap coming out nowadays. Highlights include "It's Hard Being the Kane", "Dance with the Devil", and "Put Your Weight on It."

I loved this cd way back in 1990 kane drops some tight rhymes in his trademark flow and I love big daddy vs dolemite it is hilarious while dolemite woops kane with his old school flow, can't forget who am I where kane drops science on being black and features the daughter of malcolm x of all other people and dance with the devil has kane preaching out on violence and drugs in the hood worth a listen for oldheads.

I was at a record store a while ago, and came accross this '93 release in the recent arrival bin. I'd never heard a song off this beforehand, but Kane is one of my favorite MC's of all time, and his first two albums get constant play in my stereo. I decided to get this anyway, and I'm not dissapointed.

His first two albums are beyond classic in the Hip Hop world, and his third wasn't bad, but it wasn't on the highest level. His fourth wasn't horrible, but to this day, I'll say it's the worst album he's released in his career. On this album (his 5th) he clearly resurfaced. He came back strong, and aggresive, and proved that he still had skills. Most of his first audience had grown up, or out of him. This was clearly aimed for what would be his newer audience. I really like the way he doesn't modify his subject matter, or himself to try to win over their respect, though I suppose the image is more street oriented than anything he released before this.

Personally, this is my 3rd favorite album by Kane. Because it's not "Long Live The Kane" or "It's A Big Daddy Thing" people sleep on this. For a while I did, and take my word for it - that's a big mistake. Though I wouldn't say this is 5 star material, it's a solid 4. Definately worth checking out if you're a fan of this legendary MC.

One of the most dopest Mc's alive, The Big Daddy Kane is still at it with hard rhythms, humour and dope lyrics. In my opinion the album was O.k not as good as "It's a big daddy thing" but nevertheless what you would expect from the man himself.

Like a lots of things in life, it's only with the passing of time that you learn to really appreciate things. Bid Daddy Kane had the misfortune to be in his prime in the Golden age of Hip Hop, with the likes of Rakim, LL Cool J, KRS-One, Kool G Rap, as his peers. Oh for a BDK now. This was his last release for Cold Chillin', and after this time, he was M.I.A. But what a CD to sign off with. This CD, too my mind, also highlights his weakness, wanting to a rapping about love, when most of his fans wanted him to be hardcore (listen to the `Prelude', where the great man addresses the situation himself) This CD is very hit & miss, but it showcases a man at the peak of his abilities. The lead single was this CD was' How U get a record deal'; with a very catchy video (check out you tube!) One of the highlights of this CD is' The Beef is on' which I can only describe as RUFF, true vintage Kane, in gangster mode. .'Stop Shammin' deals with the fakeness in the hip hop music industry (still relevant today!), whilst his dancers, Scoob & Scrap get on the mic on the afore mentioned `Here comes Kane, Scoob & Scrap'. Any fan of BDK should have this in their collection, and witness a true hip-hop GREAT.

You ask most real hiphop fans to name the best that did it on the mic and alot of the time you'll hear Kane being mentioned amongst the list. His rapid fire delivery added to his witty lyricism and his overall charisma over the ill beats captivated heads from the second he gripped the mic. After releaseing classics such as "Long Live The Kane" and "Its A Big Daddy Thing" and 2 alright follow ups he resurfaced with this awesome album. From the opening title track to the smooth outro it bumps along nicely with a great mixture of his masterful wordplay, ill metaphors ("my rhymes are like spandex, they make any a** seem good")and smooth tracks like "Very Special" and "Give It To Me". The highlights for me were when Kane ripped tracks apart with fierce flows on tracks like "Looks Like A Job For...", "How U Get A Record Deal?", "Chocolate City", "Rest In Peace", "Ni**az Never Learn" and "Nuff Respect(remix)". 2 other standouts were the brilliant story orientated "The Beef Is On" and the message filled "Stop Shammin'". Another plus for this album was the versatile, hard, bass heavy production from Easy Moe Dee, Trackmasterz (before the went mainstream) and Kane himself. The only 2 weak tracks in my opinion were "Brother Man,Brother Man" and "Very Special", other than that its excellent, even if its sounds alittle bit dated at times.
