Bounty Killer

I have been a reggae fan for 15 years, to me this is the best dancehall album ever released. Bounty took the style of the hardcore dancehall deejay to heights few have matched. He pretty much raised the bar as far as dancehall lyrics in the mid 90's, and he was at the top of his game when he released this.

This has the potential to be a great record, if just a few tracks were eliminated.

Rodney Price, a.k.a. Bounty Killer, has fused reggae, dancehall and hip-hop pretty well, sprinkling his tracks with guest vocals from some of hip-hop's better artists AND some of reggae's classic wailers.

On "Change Like the Weather," Erick Sermon provides the backdrop for Bounty and the Rasta dragon, Busta Rhymes, to spit over. "Living Dangerously" features Barrington Levy on a dance-happy call-and-response track. The grim "War Face (Ask Fi War)," features Price and Wu-Tang's Raekwon dripping venom all over one of RZA's better tracks. Also, Jeru the Damaja guests on "Suicide or Murder," which borrows both Blahzay Blahzay's "Danger" and Raekwon's "Ice Cream" for its bars.

But the tracks Bounty does alone are also good. "Mama" pleads with staccato horns and a plodding beat, and "Gun Down" shakes and bakes with a classic dancehall rhythm. "Benz & the Bimma" and the title track are also worthy dancehall excursions, pounding away as Mr. Price showcases his baritone rudebwoy vocabulary.

The only problem with this record is too many tracks and not enough ideas. "Hip-Hopera," with the Fugees, stumbles over a bland orchestra beat and Bounty Killer using a falsetto that is downright frightening. "War Beyond the Stars" is a disaster, with the vocals falling out of sync with the right part of the beat, and other songs just seem to run together. Had some of the filler been eliminated the the track number been cut to something like 11 or 12 tracks, this would be a four-to-five star album.

If you are into dancehall or reggae/hip-hop acts, this is still well worth your money.s

This is a must for all ghetto politicians out there from the self proclaimed ghetto politician himself.The album also shows Bounty Killer holding his own under hip hop with the Fugees,Busta Rhymmes,Jeru Tha Damaja and Raekwon.It has got a little this and that for everyone.

Solid Album. I used to have this on tape back in the day, so I went to replace it with a CD. But beware; these CDs are the clean version, which is extremely irritating. The regular version did not have a parental advisory sticker, so you cannot tell which is which. Just thought I'd warn the rest of the old people. If clean CDs do not bother you though, this is a good CD that can be purchased new for a good price.

If you dislike homophobes dont listen to BK or any other Jamaican dancehall artist for that matter. Its a cultural taboo in Island life to be homosexual. There is no point in saying if he was speaking such things about Blacks the cd would be pulled... such an ambiguous statement is irrelevant to the music of this cd or your argument about violence (in the lyrics, mind you) towards gays. If you dont agree with the message in the music, DONT LISTEN! Its a free market, baby! Capitolism has some uses.

Now, on to the album... somewhat of a disappointment. Too much cross-over attempts. Check out the 5th Element or My Xperience to get dat Bounty Killa vibez dat will mek ya nines rise

The overtly aggressive nature of the homophobia in the lyrics of this artist are tantamout to the advocation of violence against gay people and should not be encouraged. Bounty Killer has done it again. Mr. Killer has once again proven why he is one of Jamaica's hottest DJ's. This album has it all. The album has some great beats to some even better lyrics. This is an album for real reggae/dancehall fans. Respect to Bounty Killer.

This cd is good. I agree with the earlier review there was no beenie man and no ladies on there. I was looking for Lady saw . However , if you dont really understand reggae that much you might not want to buy it. This is dancehall , hardcore reggae and can be abit dirty. HOwever it is a good cd.

There is a problem with this record, much the same problem that it had on last year's version. The problem is that if you are a deep listening, dancehall reggae nut, you already know all these tunes, and may even own most of them as singles already. However, if you are not an aforementioned dancehall nut, then this record might just be perfect for you. The dancehall version of Strictly the Best this year has alot of the favorite artists going today including Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Sizzla, and Mad Cobra. And the tunes they pulled from the artists are arguably their biggest tunes of the year; Sufferah from Bounty Killer, Press Trigger from the snake and Tallup Tallup from Elephant Man. My favorites on the record are Sufferah of course, Wah Dat Fa by the underappreciated Baby Cham, very good tune and How It Ago by the fire man. My absolute favorite tune here however, is Fitness, by Bounty Killer and Angel Doolas, very slack tune, but just a really good, dark sounding tune. Capleton and Sizzla also both go the slack route with Tek It Off and Come On respectively (Sizzla not so much so as Capleton, but Come On is a really crazy sounding tune. I also like Highet Level by Elephant Man. The last track which is very out of place here is Jah is Always There by Warrior King, which VPRecords obviously put on this one to promote Warrior King's new record, Virtuous Woman, (which is awesome by the way)and it is a great track, but like i said much out of place. Overall, like i said, if you aren't too familiar with Dancehall this year, then by all means get this one, its a very good sounding album. Only complaint to VP, no Beenie Man? No woman DJ?

One of the new blood in the ragga movement is Bounty Hunter (Rodney Price), who has a voice and style similar to old time toasters like Big Youth, and, with Buju Banton and Beenie Man, are leading reggae into the next millenium. Listen to his performance in dancehall mix of the Fugees' cover of "Killing Me Softly" to hear that he has arrived.

"Down in the Ghetto" is his sophomore effort from 1994, and is an excellent look at rude boy/reality reggae in the 1990's. The title track alone shows that he is in tune with what is going on around him, and his toasting style, both forceful and frantic, best illustrate the feelings on the streets.

This lp is certainly his best effort to date and will not take purists (which I consider myself) long to see similarities between Bounty and Peter Tosh. The criticism is there, as is the voice- perfect for toasting.

This is is a great one, and well worth getting.

I love Bounty Killer, He has a very good voice and I like his style

Basically to get a feel for BK's style, because I hear him all the time on compilations and I was really interested in what a full fledged effort from him would sound like, and 5th Element was the highest recommended album that I could find. I wasn't dissapointed at all in this one, there are about 10 really good songs here, my personal favorite being the title track where BK just kills the flow. Also I like Bullz of Chicago, Eaden & Sheeden, Mr. Tear and Bore, and Lord of Da Warriors. I like his aggressive dancehall style, right up there with Capleton. Can't wait for the new record Ghetto Dictionary.

Yes, this is one CD that is quite possibly Eric Serra's best work and thank god, he got a film that fits his unique style of music perfectly. I must admit, I listen to Ruby Rap about 40 times before I became bored and moved to the next song. This CD has a orchestra and techno-mix with it. Don't understand? Well, imaging a nice orchestra mixed with some nice techo beats and a great flow of pure genius. He never fails to make a soundtrack that is great with the movie and great to listen to. I won't lie to you, I'm very proud to have this in my vast collection of music. In fact, it's number one on my list right now and I've had this CD for 2 years now. So, do yourself a favor and buy it, because your not reading this review just for the hell of it..are you? Your thinking about buying it so your reading the reviews. So buy it and listen to it and enjoy it.

this new album was well putt together, and is a must have. Killer made sure that he had different styles for everyone and he made sure that he made all the moves he needed to make to get the album out. this album will reach "gold' status in a few weeks, its getting much love and will continue to get love jah guide

This is truly worth getting if you are any type of dancehall fan. Bounty is no doubt the leader of the dancehall scene and he proves it with this album. This one is a pure reggae LP. Fifth element includes the hit "Look" on the bug riddin' which is banned in Jamaica. Also Anytime and Mr. Wanna Be which you could pump up the volume when you listen. Also for the conscious minded, there are couple tracks with Barrington Levy and Junior Reid. Trust me, this album is worth it, was well worth the wait since Millenium.

This album is amazing. He brings a collection of traditions roots rock vibes along with some of the best dancehall tracks I have heard in a while. His sounds are raw and his message is clear. . .Jamacia infrastructure is in disarray and their children are suffering and their only outlet is in a life of crime and drugs. If you are looking for some great music with a strong message this album is for you. This album is not for the faint hearted its beat are hard and raw . . . just the way I like it.

Collections from great artists are always great, and Bounty Killer is great. The song 'look' was played a lot around 2000 and I never heared it again until I bought this album, it reminds me of my days when I was a Student. For me this album is for collectors, it is one that one wouldn't want to loose.

It's a classic

Bounty Killer is the greatest DJ(MC) to grace the mic. No one comes close to his versatility and originality. Gwaan Killa we know who is the real GOD of Dancehall. You don't need to crown yourself like some other guys. When I am 80+ yrs old I will still be listening to your music. You are a true inspiration, every song on here is a classic if you respect lyricism and real Danchall vibes buy the cd now. Jah Bless

There have perhaps been more talented and more versatile dj's than Bounty Killer. There have been tons of lesser talents who have garnered more attention, both at home and abroad. There have been artist's who have even made their name off of Bounty Killer's career, and although he is the crowned Warlord, he has not won EVERY single battle, although he has won every war.

However, when it comes to literally OWNING the ear of the ghettos of Jamaica, no other artist has ruled those areas, particularly in Kingston with an iron fist as Bounty Killer has. Every single artist you will ever hear of from these areas will claim, above all others as his (and sometimes her) greatest source of inspiration. Artists such as Vybz Kartel, Aidonia, Busy Signal and even Warrior King will list the Killer as the best and claim to know all of his lyrics (even though most of them aren't from Kingston). Bounty has also done his part to seeing that the talent get risen to such a level to be mentioned in the same sentence as himself, as he has in recent years been the courier to bringing up such now established talents as Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Wayne Marshall, Baby Cham and a slew of others.

Therefore, its only fitting, after having released double greatest hits album for Beenie Man, Sizzla and Beres Hammond, and a well powerful single for Lady Saw as well, that the Warlord would get his turn as well.

This is the begin all, end all albums for Killer. This album is so well put together that just listening to it had me reliving my teenage years and hearing songs that I used to recite at lunch time daily. Songs like the long forgotten but smash No Interview, New Gun, Gun Thirsty, the big man combination 21 with Pinchers!

But that's just the beginning. More recent hits such as Sufferah with Wayne Marshall from the Diwali riddim and the dark and slack Fitness with Angel Doolas also made the cut, so if you just started listening to Rodney Price in the last few years you're covered as well, but I suspect that the fan who will get the most satisfaction out of this one is the fan who has been following his entire life. Its just awfully interesting to see how Killa's style changed with the times but never sold out to what was popular, just a natural and gradual change. Evolving now to the point of him becomming the proto-type modern aged aggressive styled dancehall dj.

My favorite Bounty Killer song of all time is track #7, disc one LODGE. Its my favorite song between the 2 discs, just that simple simple beating of the lyrics and arrangement just keeps the head nodding. Also love the songs proceeding it: of course Spy fi Die, of course Coppershot, of course Statement, of course Dead This Time! They also pack the quality at the end of the first disc with hit after hit, My Xperience, the fine fine Suspence which I hardly remembered, Fedup Sufferah and the disc ends with the notorious Look. One of the hardest pure dancehall culture songs you'll ever hear anywhere.

Disc 2 is packed just as tight, although perhaps in a 'lighter' mood. All the 'gal tunes' seem to congregate on disc 2. Although, the oddball such as the sickly wicked Warlord makes an apperance on disc 2. The best of the gal tunes is probably the big hit combination with singer Barrington Levy, Living Dangerously, still one of my favorite songs with the rather most unlikely of combinations running through. He also drops in the odd but classic ode to his mother on Miss Ivy Last Son which became a hit on all reggae fronts. Salvation, Seek God, Roots Reality & Culture all culturally follow such big tunes as Fitness and Arrow in closing out the spectacular disc 2 before a rare Addies special/mix.

ALSO, big biggups to VP. The album is very very nicely packaged and presented and they have been on a roll lately with not only regular releases but greatest hits albums and re-releases from such artists is I-Kong, Dennis Brown (biggup Locks Lion on the review) and Garnett Silk. And although Killa may have not proven to be the best business man, but he has scored maybe the finest deal of his career as next year will see the release of not only his first album since 2002 but an album featuring his 'Alliance' crew which features some of the best talent Jamaica has to offer (Kartel, Ele, Busy Signal, Idonia, Wayne Marshall, Mavado etc.) as well.

Overall, I can't recommend this one enough for a wide variety of Bounty Killer fans. This is a project for all of his fans. For the new fan, this will show you the history of the artist which you're just getting to know and show you exactly where he came from and how he got to be where he is in terms of his standing in dancehall. And of course, old fans will literally drool over Nah No Mercy's lineup, trust that your favorite song is here! From the classic style that Bounty revolutionized of dj battles and war and all the wins and scars he's collected over the years to the oft-forgotten versatility of the artist. Definitely 5 stars, definitely one of the best albums of the year, and definitely looking forward to a huge '07 from the Killa.

I remember feeling this when it dropped. The Fugees were fresh off of dropping The Score the previous year ('96), so everything they touched was golden. All three of them (yes, including Pras) do their thing, but Lauryn's verse is classic. Even Wyclef's verse was dope. Couple that with Bounty Killer, who has always been dope in my mind despite what others say about his lyrical content, and you have a can't miss hit. Even the video was on point. My only beef is the fact that the track is edited, but it does say radio edit on the back. If there's an unedited version, I don't know about it, but I'd love to have it.

The second track, Living Dangerously featuring Barrington Levy, was a track that I didn't really appreciate when this single first dropped. I like it now even thought I couldn't stand it back in '97. It has more of a dancehall flavor to it than the first track.

Ghetto Dictionary: The Art of War is a superb release. From beginning to end, the Warlord spits wicked lyrics like an AK with unlimited rounds. He dismantles his rival deejays with such ruthless aggression, that when the smoke clears, there is no man left standing. Personally, I love the entire album, but if I had to choose, my favorite tracks are: "Killa is a Killa," "Warlord Nuh Business," the hard-hitting "Stainless," the relentless Beenie Man diss "Look Good," "Which One," "Likkle Dread Bwoy" where he takes shots at Mr. Vegas, Buju Banton, and Sizzla, "Top Ah Top," the fast-paced "Gunz on the Run," the sick "All Out War," "After All," and the final track (which is possibly the HARDEST song ever made) "War Lady." The beat is absolutely IN-SANE! Just listening to the first few seconds sounds like Armaggedon itself is about to jump off! Long live BK!!

Bounty is one of those Reggae artists that just rhymes sick. He has the lyrics and beat to put together a great album. Don't sleep on Bounty y'all.

The first instalment in Bounty Killer's "Ghetto Dictionary" series features the ever-controversial DJ in battle mode, as the title suggests. Essentially, the 20 tracks here are Bounty Killer insulting, parodying and generally being verbally nasty toward his enemies. And who are his enemies? Basically every single other DJ. Aside from his well-documented feud with Beenie Man (each accuses the other of stealing his style), Bounty delivers challenges to Buju Banton, Baby Cham, Merciless, Lexxus and many others.

Musically, this album is standard dancehall fare. The most popular riddims (beats, for those who don't know the slang) all make appearances either here or on the companion disc "The Mystery". The only variety is provided by the appearance of dancehall quartet TOK on "Man Ah Bad Man The Sequel" - a payback for Bounty Killer's work on their debut.

As with much contemporary dancehall, the lyrics are where this album stands or falls. As befits one of the leaders of the style, Bounty Killer is on the top of his game here. Given the subject matter, he has to be. For those unfamiliar with the practice of "sound clashes", think along the lines of the "dis wars" in hip-hop only much faster and more creatively delivered.

Bounty Killer's style over much of "The Art Of War" can only be described as borderline insane. He is able to hold a beat with metronomic efficiency, however the most striking moments are when he makes his falsetto exclamations of "that's right" and other slogans. The unpredictable arrival of these moments is simultaneously disconcerting and a joy to listen to.

One of the most striking tracks here is "Warlord Nuh Business". This track is nothing more nor less than a shopping list of insults delivered at every single DJ within firing range, led by the line "Mi nuh business". The sheer audacity of this approach will leave the listener - or at least the listener capable of translating the rapid-fire patois - shocked.
The other standout is "Look Good". Beginning with a long spoken-word introduction, Bounty Killer systematically exposes Beenie Man's hypocrisy towards homosexuals, while insinuating that Beenie is homosexual himself. Added into this is a reference to Bounty Killer's own experiences recording with No Doubt (he provides backing vocals and a verse on "Hey Baby"). The creativity of the rhyme scheme here is carried over to the toast itself, more insults directed at Beenie.

For the dancehall neophyte, this is probably not the place to start. While it is a great example (arguably the definitive example) of this style of toasting, "Art Of War" and its battle toasts are not the most accessible element of dancehall. Many listeners will also be offended by the rampant homophobia on this album - a common criticism of dancehall as a genre, but particularly in the battle toasts. For the listener who wants the Bounty Killer experience, "The Mystery" is probably a better place to look. For those who are prepared to look past these drawbacks, this recording is highly recommended.

The furthest thing from commercial trash, Bounty shows his attempt to crack into a more mainstream audience with No Doubt does not herald the beginning of the end. The Warlord comes to the battlefield with all guns blazing and, when the smoke clears, leaves no challenger standing. This CD does not showcase Bounty's versatility, rather he goes back to hardcore dancehall roots and gives a true exhibition of the art of war. Including tailor-made-for-clash gems like "Blood Bath", "Warlord Nuh Business", "Stainless", "Look Good", "Sumfest", "Just Dead", "All Out War", and my personal favourite, "Likkle Dread Bwoy", Bounty lyrically destroys Sizzla, Lexxus, Mr. Vegas, Hawkeye, Merciless, Baby Cham, producer extraordinaire Dave Kelly, longtime nemesis Beenie Man, and even takes a stab at Buju Banton. The CD has a gritty, vengeful feel to it, as Bounty lets loose with biting lingual gymnastics, on subjects confined mainly to haters, rival deejays, and fassyholes in general. Possessed of creative ingenuity and a wicked flow, the poor people's governor provides a that is a must-have for any Bounty fan (and really, who isn't?). While casual listeners or newcomers to dancehall may wonder, after a while, when Bounty will run out of guns to pop out, true dancehall aficionados will smile and wonder when deejays will learn that they can't test the Killer. This is not (yet) recommended to those now becoming acquainted to dancehall, excluding hip-hop battle lovers. Instead, listen around a bit and get some background info, then graduate and study the art of war.

This album is must have for new bounty fans. However longtime bounty fans already have all of these tracks if they have bought his albums in the past. I would rate the album as only being decent. Some of the tracks on the album I don't feel should have been on a best of album for bounty killer. for example " gal" and "you'll never Know". Also what happened to Living Dangerously, that song definately should have been on this album. I know" Mi caa Beleive Mi eyes" is farely new, but most would already consider that as one of his all time best songs. Also missing "Fed up ", "suspense", "seek god". Not a bad album, but could have been better.

For all raggae fans, this album is a must, but I'm not going to give it 5 stars, as being a classic. His lyrics are good, the beat is smooth, and it is slightly reminiscant of Bob Marley. The problem is this. Bounty has become the most popular raggae artist in North America, and I think that he made this album to be a croud pleaser. Bounty tried to make it good, when normally, his wonderful music speaks for itself. He was defintevely trying to aim the arrow too hard. Still, I have to credit him for his still good music, but I think he should leave the popularity side out of this.
