I had not heard of Buddy Jewell until listening to Sweet Southern Comfort. It is the one song that I can close my eyes and be transported back to my childhood and the ease of living and the feelings of being carefree. A lovely sentiment and a great showcase for the gentleman's lush and rich voice.

I may not listen to a lot of Country music, but when my daughter gave me this CD as a gift I have to say I truly enjoyed it. "Help Pour Out The Rain," truly touched my heart, made me smile and wipe a few tears away. Very good. I loved the music in O'Reilly Luck.and grandpa's story.. All in all this is really a nice CD and one that should bring you hours of enjoyment. Recommended.

Difficult for me to say this being that it is a Country album but it is very good. I really like the lyrics that Buddy throws out there and think he is refreshing in this genre.

I gave up on Nashville a long time ago, preferring the Austin/Americana scene to the slick packaged country productions that seem to come off the Nashville assembly line with disturbing regularity these days, but I just might have to change my mind after listening to this CD. Yes, it's packaged, but gosh is it good, and there's more than one surprise to be had. As a father, Lacey's Song still chokes me up every time I hear it. As a Yankee who now calls the South home, Sweet Southern Comfort captures the grace and beauty of this part of the country wonderfully. As a sap for a sad country song, the remix of Today I Started Loving You Again with Miranda Lambert is as good as it gets. Buddy Jewell's debut album gives me hope for the future of Nashville music. Hopefully, the follow up is every bit as good.

Buddy Jewell's self-titled debut album has already produced a couple of solid hits, "Help Pour Out The Rain(Lacey's Song)" and "Sweet Southern Comfort". "Help Pour Out The Rain" is a touching song that Buddy wrote about his relationship with his daughter, and "Sweet Southern Comfort" is a tribute to country living. Other strong songs on this record are Buddy's cover of the classic Merle Haggard song "Today I Started Loving You Again"; the somber ballads "One In A Row", "Abilene On Her Mind", and "Why We Said Goodbye"; the wisecracking "I Wanna Thank Everyone"; and "I Can Get By", the toe-tapping song that was written by Buddy's producer, Clint Black, and originally recorded by Clint. Unlike some other newer artists that have come onto the country music scene in recent years, Buddy has his roots in authentic country music. He's the "real deal" as far as music goes, and I look for him to be a solid country hit maker.

Prime Cuts: Addicted to the Rain, Any Other Woman, Times Like These

While many lesser talents have opted for the route of mere hucksterism where snarling guitars and thundering percussions provide the cover up, Jewell has traveled down the tired and true road of well crafted songs performed with earnestness and verve. Inoculated against the current trend in country music to rave up the rugged and rockier side of the genre, Jewell and producer Garth Fundis (who has had produced albums by Sugarland, Keith Whitley, Don Williams and Trisha Yearwood) has kept the backings on the rustic side with plenty of fiddles, steel guitars and honky tonk piano. Such simplicity is the soul of wit as the spotlight is deftly on Jewell's sturdy yet warm baritone. On this sophomore effort, Jewell is vocally more in command: not only does he sing well, but he is vocally able to nuance the emotional depths of the lyrics to an even greater degree.

Also, another step of vast improvement is the honing of Jewell's songwriting ability. On "Times Like These," Jewell showcases 4 of his compositions and they are all spot on. With an uncanny ability to be able to take the rhetoric of the struggles and foibles of life and transform them into music, Jewell's compositions are indeed this album's cynosure. Mixing just the right dosage of heart and poetry, "Addicted to the Rain," a Jewell co-write with Larry Clark, goes beyond the nondescript ordinary song of heartbreak to disclose the gelidity of a love gone wrong. Top marks also goes to the sensitive title track which articulates the fears and joys of fatherhood performed with such sincerity that it is bound to be a future Father's Day classic. Small town values, a perennial theme in country music, does surfaces in the penetrating moving ballad "Dyes, Arkansas."

Among those not penned by Jewell, lead single "Any Other Woman" is indeed this album's gem. Boasting some dexterous piano licks, "Any Other Woman," written by Brett Beavers, Connie Harrington and Brett Beavers, tells of the glorious power of how love can change the priorities of a man. With Jewell's sensitive rendition, this power ballad is sure bet to make Jewell's legions of female fans swoon. A little more desultory is the Rick Bowles and Josh Leo midtempo "Me Loving You." Though melodious and tailored made for radio, it's a little on the contrived and obligatory side. Craig Wiseman and Tony Lane's "You Ain't Doin' It Right" is a tad better and it's one of the few more welcomed uptempo moments.

However, not everything works here. "So Gone," for instance, is a throwaway 70s pop fluff that is just plain bromidic. Further, though Jewell excels in the ballads department, the uptempo section is not on par. Other than "You Ain't Doin' It Right" and "So Gone" most of the album is in the mid and slower pace. It would have been even better if one or two more well chosen peppier numbers were included. Nevertheless, this is a good country CD with top tiered songs and affectionately sung by Jewell who seems to have live with these songs giving them an inherent credibility. In short, this is country music that matters.

As many people may know by now, Sony was recently caught with egg on their face when a security specialist found out that a recently purchased CD (Van Zant: Get Right With The Man) from Sony music not only installed DRM software (digital rights management, to limit and outright prevent copying music to certain devices), but it did so in such a sneaky way that it hid itself entirely from Windows, and opened the system up to security issues such as viruses.

This CD has the same copyright protection, called XCP. When installed, Sony hijacks your computer and installs custom software which:

1) Hides itself entirely from Windows by installing as a rootkit
2) Hides itself in such a manner that any files begining with $sys$ are also hidden. For example, if you install the XCP copy protection software on your machine, and rename "document.doc" to "$sys$document.doc" it then becomes invivisble to you forever.
3) Installs its own custom CD-Rom drivers to hijack your system. It also sneakily names these drivers "Plug and Play Device Manager" to seem as if it's a part of Windows. Trying to delete these drivers manually will disable your CD-Rom drive entirely.
4) Offers no uninstall option until you manually contact Sony

As of my writing this review, Sony has "apologized" for this incident, and claims they will "re-evaluate" this copyright protection software on their CDs in the future.

In the meantime, a virus is currently running wild, which names itself begining with $sys$ in an attempt to hide from the user and virus scanners.

Several class action lawsuits are also pending against Sony right now.

In summary, as you can tell from above, Sony's actions here are absolutely horrible. This is your music. You purchased it, and they should not have any right to dictate how you can use it, let alone install software which compromises your system security.

This is one of the CDs with Sony's XCP copyright protection software on it, and as a result, you should not buy it to send a message to Sony that this will NOT be tolerated in the future.

Well, Buddy Jewell... you used to be one of my favorite recording artists, but now you are an artist I have to boycott due to your arrogance in signing with a CD label that does not allow us to make copies of our own CD or even to put the music on our own MP3 player. To be able to listen to your CD I have to carry a large clunky portable CD player IF I decide to keep the CD. I will never buy another of your albums, Mr. Jewell, until you leave Sony's evil clutches. Like the person said below, we are not all piraters of music, but filthy rich perfomer's like you is the reason people like me download music. I am returning this Album back to the store and demanding my money back. You lost a fan, Mr. Jewell. Sorry, but your arrogance and paranioa brought this upon yourself.

I first heard this song on CMT, the video is a must see. the little girl in it is absolutely beautiful. the song is truly a work of art.

a simple yet deeply moving song. Anybody with children can relate to this song, and anybody that plans to have children can anticipate what the song tells us.

I recently got the chance to review this album, and I was really impressed. Buddy Jewell is a great singer, and really belts these tunes out. If you like Buddy Jewell already, just stop reading here and buy the album.
The album is really easy to listen to all the way through, but several of the songs are really top notch. "So Hard to Be Strong" has one of the best lines in country music....but I won't spoil it for you. "I get the bird" is hilarious, almost on the level of Joe Diffie's "John Deere Green", and "Downtown Matinee" is a great reminiscence of a song. If you like Radney Foster's "DEl Rio, TX, 1959" album, you'll love this song and the whole album.
The songs on this album are great, and the vocals are tremendous. It's got that old-timey country music feel with all the benefits of modern recording and songwriting. Just like driving around in a restored 1956 convertible....with air conditioning and a CD player! It's great!

I enjoyed this collection! Buddy Jewell has a strong, convincing voice that "sells" these songs well. My favorites were "Oh, Justine," which gives a strong start, "Downtown Matinee" (I, too, miss Roy Rogers and Gene Autry), "I Get the Bird" (great lyrics!) and "Mama Della," which has a nice touch of Western swing to it. Recommended for those who like country and those who think they might like to try to like it.

Somehow this CD recaptures memories that you never thought you had. The combination of Buddy Jewell's powerful range of vocals, some nice melodies and lyrics that trascend time, result in some sweet listening. "The Downtown Matinee" revives some memories of watching the double feature on a Saturday afternoon, maybe listening to Hank on the way home and feeling free with your whole life still in front of you.
The songs have a nice range of sounds and stories with some of the arrangements reminiscent of Clint Black, the Eagles, and even Jimmy Buffet. The entire CD is suggestive of Hank Williams except with better vocals (forgive me).
This is new old country at its best

You gotta hear Tales of the New West for yourself before you can even imagine how great it is. What fantastic storytellers these writers are. Everything is stellar, the musical instumentation, the backup vocals, the writing, the singing,all magical and positively excellent. Wow, these CD is the total package. You couldn't ask for better than this because it just doesn't get any better. No bad songs on it. I was just freaked out at how superlative it was the first time I heard it and I've played it a thousand times since then. There are hauntingly beautiful melodies and lyrics that play over and over in your head long after the CD ends. Its a spectacular piece of craftsmanship! A thousand kudos to the Coreys and Dennis Kahler, and to Buddy too, for his magnificent vocals. I read the beautiful note Buddy wrote inside the CD about how proud he was to do it, so lets see the videos already. This is his absolute best work ever.

First let me say that I admire Buddy Jewell as a writer and singer and from the first episode of Nashville Star I knew he would be the winner because he had more talent than all the others combined. Next, I know that tens of thousands of women (and some men) across this great country of ours are devout Buddy fans, after all, he got more than 3 million votes to win. The problem is that often those choices by mostly women and some men of zeroing in on an artist and being a confirmed fan can frequently become "FANantical". They have their own little click going and when they see or hear something they don't like about thier "IDOL" they pick apart the songs or singers or writers without giving any thought as to how hurtful their words are. These writers didn't all go to work one day, put in eight hours, then go home with a finished CD. I know the Coreys and all four of them are very friendly, honest, gentle and kindhearted people. I'm proud to be their frined. The cruely inflicted by "fanatical fans" have long reaching consequences that can be viciously cruel and painfully hurtful but I imagine their negative comments come from their own insecurities. All one has to do is read the remarks inside the CD label made by Buddy himself about how proud he was to be a part of the Corey's project and how great the writing and songs were. Buddy also says these are ALL songs he would have chosen on his own to record. The Tales of the New West CD is NOT a demonstrational (demo) quality product. It is a full A+ quality product that deserves no less than a major label, major artist and half a dozen videos and airplay all across the country. Buddy was paid handsomely, and much more than any Nashville label would have paid him to do the project. After the initial pressing the demand became huge and when additional copies were pressed Buddy was paid more than 75% higher commison off of each unit than he got for his own debut album, which by the way, is not nearly as good as Tales of the New West. Buddy's biggest problem is that he can't get out of his own way long enough to become the superstar right up there with Toby, Chesney, Jackson. McGraw and all the others that he deserves to be. Buddy is his own worst enemy and is slowly fading his three minutes of fame into obscurity with unwise moves. His latest single peaked at number 17 then fell off the charts all together. I only pray that since Buddy is determined to make foolish and unwise decisions that just maybe a "REAL" star will listen to Tales of the New West and negotiate a deal with the Coreys to release the album in its entirety. Chesney, Urban and McGraw could also be dynamite candidates for Corey songs. The songs that Buddy should have done immediately upon winning Nashville Star. He would have had around seven number ones off of the CD and then he could have followed it up with his two independent albums which would have also been double platinum for him. Instead he sold his soul to Sony and let the likes of Clint Black, Tracy Gershon and Sony execs tell him: sing this one, sing that one, do it like this,do it like that, you're finished, go home. Buddy should have taken a lesson from Toby and struck a deal with the Coreys and Sony to release Tales of the New West, he would have been a millionaire by now. Buddy stuck me as being an intelligent and not afraid to speak up when I watched him every Saturday night but right after the show he sold himself to the people that know less about making good country music than a kindergarten child would know. Clint Black may be a good singer, but a producer he is NOT!!!!! When you hear men and women say negative and hurtful things about this album, just remember how PROUD that Buddy was before he sold out to Sony. When women fan members say cruel things that they hear from gossip and have no true and personal knowledge of, well, you figure it out, it hurts. What we have here is a wonderful singer that doesn't have the good sense to stand up to Sony to produce a great album like Tales of the New West, and we have four wonderful people, the writers, that have done nothing wrong but are being criticized unfairly and unjustly by people that don't know the truth. It's sad, but true. So go to Walmart or Amazon and buy this great album and see for yourself how wonderful it is. The Corey's only write wonderful songs, and this was years and years of hard work, with writes and rewrites and then more rewrites until they acheived perfection, along with Dennis Kahler. Don't trust hurtful people that make poor choices for they will surely somewhere down the line pay the consequences for their unkind words in haste. Its a great CD that any record major label would be proud to gladly release if they would take the time to listen to in its entirety. Jason Meadows or George Canyon could do that CD just as good as Buddy who doesn't want to ackowledge it since he sold himself to Sony and they own him. Sad, sad, sad! Such a loss. The Coreys are honest, kind, hardworking people, so you remember that the next time people say unkind comments. I'm PROUD to call the Corey's my friends. I would buy anything they wrote and if I lived in Nashville I would take a copy to every record label because no big name star in his right mind would take a listen and then turn it down, they know a moneymaker when they hear it and Tales of the New West is definitely a moneymaker.

Playing Time - 40:38 -- With over 25 years of songwriting experience, brothers Arthur and Alton Corey also pen tunes with Alton's wife (Sharon), Arthur's wife (Margie), and long-time friend David Kahler. This 2003 release entitled "Tales of the New West" is a nice showcase of their abilities. Well-known Nashville-based tenor vocalist Buddy Jewell was enlisted to sing the songs, and he's got the perfect voice for this material. He's a former Nashville Star winner. Musicians and arrangers contributing to this project include Marty Rifkin, Denny Martin, Steven Cooper, Ed Tree, Joey Scarbury, Eddie Cunningham, and C. Girard. Guitars, bass and drums are supplemented with fiddle, dobro, mandolin, and pedal steel.

The Coreys' eclectic country set covers many bases. While some of the songs are more memorable than others, they are very deserving of being recorded by top name country artists and heard by larger audiences. A song like "Oh, Justine" might have just started with some potential melody and a snippet of lyric, but hard work and collaboration eventually saw it to final completion. "Parrothead Paradise" incorporates some Jimmy Buffett touches, while "Rosa Danced" was written in a Marty Robbins vein. Some western swing sensibility is built into "Mama Della," based on a poem written by Sharon as a teen growing up in Corpus Christy. The song was a quarterfinal winner in the American Song Contest in the late-1970s. "One Time We Cared" started as a song written about Art's father and his grieving about the passing of Art's mother. Says Art, "We brought in Dennis Kahler, and the song changed for the better by Dennis making the tune commercial. Dennis is the best for when we have written ourselves into a corner and need to get out!"
Dennis did the same thing with "Come Back Angel."

Stories are paramount to having a good song. "Pancho Villa's Gold" tells one about an unholy trio who searched for the treasure like they were insane until they discovered its truth. The Corey's positive song about Howard Hughes, "Silver Wings in the Stars," was submitted for consideration in Martin Scorsese's film The Aviator, but the music director was only interested in period material from the 30s and 40s.

"I Get the Bird" is a novelty tune about breakup and who gets the flamingo in the yard. The references to a "pink bird on a stick" and his momma's dying words ("Son, you get the bird!") emphasize the importance of catchy hooks in country music. Art told me that to date, that "silly little novelty tune" is the one that many people remember about this album. "Cold & Lonesome Life" was the very first country song they ever wrote, a simple and traditional-sounding three chord diddy that works because of its simplicity and conversational tone. "The Downtown Matinee" is a great closer for this album of original songs because it's a personal statement about the Coreys growing up in the 50s near Pomona, California and their close life-long relationship. Their successful songwriting is documented proof of it. Their younger days certainly might have been characterized by "ridin' and ropin', and all of that kid stuff," but today the Coreys are tunesmiths who are demonstrating considerable aptitude for their craft. They are in the process of a follow-up CD, "Tales Of The New West II," another collection of both up tempo and ballad material. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

Once I listened to Tales of the New West, I couldn't stop. From the up beat opener, "Oh Justine" to the Eaglesque "Downtown Matinee," this album delivers what every country fan yearns for.....true heart and country soul with every track.
The flawless production only adds to the already solid vocal style of Buddy Jewel, of which he should be very proud. This album rocks! Finally a genuine country album that out shines just about anything coming out of Nashville today. The lyrical imagery and on the money melodies are near perfect and takes me back to the classic tunes of Merle, Hank and Dwight. Keep it up Coreys......I hope there is a follow up to this heartfelt gem.

I agree with Ma Hubbard that this album is musically very good, if not great. However, I disagree regarding the ethics involved. I personally know the songwriters (The Corey Family) who financed this whole project themselves and paid Buddy a substantial amount of money for his participation. Furthermore, they have a contract with Buddy to pay him royalties for every album sold and the royalty rate is three times what Sony or any other record company would typically pay. THIS IS NOT A BOOTLEG ALBUM.. To the contrary, Buddy stands to gain more financially than any other person involved with this album and I heartily recommend it to any of his fans.

I rate this album, excellent. I first saw Buddy Jewel on
Nashville Star. I am normally not a big country music fan,
however, watching Buddy Jewel on Nashville Star, I began
to really enjoy his music and became interested in some of
his other work.

I fell in love with "Tales of the New West". I really enjoy
over half of the songs on this album. Since I purchased,
"Tales of the New West", I seem to listen to it over and over
