Carl Cox

I saw this production in LA with the original Broadway cast, and while I thought it was emotional and VERY well acted, it was also musically forgettable. I mean, 'songs that sound pretty powerful while you hear them that you couldn't sing a note from ten seconds later' forgettable. Yes, there are some interesting songs like the afore mentioned "Salty Teardrops", "Roosevelt Petrucius Coleslaw", and "Lot's Wife", but it still doesn't stay with you. The EMOTION does, but alas, the melodies do not. And I've sang in an award-winning gospel group for years, but ANY of those melodies stay with you and these don't. Not too mention that when you hoped that it might finally be over, you realized it was only the intermission! I have not experienced anything like THAT in a musical since Anthony Newley's "Chaplin", and that's NOT a good sign! A first act should not feel that long....

Also, the reviewer above was only half right: No, "Avenue Q" did not deserve Best Musical, but "Wicked" most certainly DID! Over-hyped or not, it still was head and shoulders above anything else that year. I would've enjoyed THIS show better as a straight drama, but as a Musical I'm afraid it misses the mark.

I never had a chance to see the original production on Broadway and after listening to this CD that upsets me. Caroline, or Change has a great score and a good story. The actors are excellent and pure. Tonya Pinkins is amazing in the role of Caroline. If this show came out after shows such as "Wicked" and "Avenue Q" I think it would have had a better chance to be noticed. With shows like "Grey Gardens" and "Spring Awakening" now out on Broadway I believe that there is now an audience for smaller, original, quality shows like "Caroline, Or Change" (I am not saying that "Avenue Q" is not quality or original but "Avenue Q" and "Wicked" flooded the news especially when it came to the Tony's). I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes a high quality show.

I traveled from DC to NY twice to see this production in 2004. Trust me...What you hear on this CD is what I saw and heard in the Theatre!! I agree with the previous reviewers in that this musical is years ahead of it's time. Years from now it will be mentioned along with Sondheim works and Dreamgirls as musicals that were on the cutting edge of musical theatre!!!

I haven't seen the production but as much of the story, including dialogue, is sung, and the full score is presented on the CD, this is the next best thing to being there. I DO NOT agree that the show is ahead of its time. It continues the wonderful tradition I was afraid would die with Sondheim. A tradition of the intellectual musical. It has tremendous depth - emotional, intellectual, musical. If you haven't seen the show I'd advise that you read the lyrics as you listen, otherwise its somewhat difficult to follow, but BUY IT. Like Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Company and Sunday in the Park with George you'll hear something new every time you listen.

i LOVE this show. Tonya Pinkins is phenomenal as Caroline, and Anika Noni Rose is likewise as wonderful as Emmie. Its a shame that Caroline, or Change came out when it did - it was up with some hard competition that year, what with Wicked coming out as well. I think had Tonya not been up against the amazing, not to mention my IDOL Idina Menzel, she would have taken home the Tony, hands down. I think the show was also ahead of its time, meaning Broadway probably wasn't ready then, or, in my opinion, now for a show of this magnitude, but man! what an amazing show indeed. definitely in my top favorite shows. I would recommend this show to just about anyone.

Make sure the bass is up high are this is gonna suck. But for sure this can amp you up with the hard house (the latter half).

This album is in my opinion the best album Carl Cox brought on the market. The records on this album are the records he played the most in the season the cd came out and most of them are just smashin'. Due to the fact that it's a live recording, it's a very uplifting and lively (dâh) cd. Even my friends who don't really like techno like this cd!

I had this cd for a year or two now and recently decided to pop it in the player and give it another listen. I was truly blown away! Cox was so far ahead of his time and the flow of the disc is fantastic. This disc will make you wish that you could go back in time and be in the club that night to hear this wicked set as it was born.

Very annoying screams from the crowd, and intermittent interruptions from the DJ encouraging the crowd to continue yelling over every track and "drop-out", utterly ruins what otherwise would have been a master piece of Techno music. Somebody please tell Carl to turn off the d@mn microphone and spin the records.

Carl Cox rips it loose in Motown on this 2nd Session of Mixed Live !! The tracks are thumpin', pumpin' hard trance danceables....just what you'd expect from Carl's live work. Carl uses the sound board to create effects and even yells out to the crowd throughout the mix....its fast, furious and fun....the only thing missing is his trademark ending where he cuts the power to the turntable and lets the last song wind down to a stop on the open mike...all in all I think this mix is superior to his 1st Session of Mixed Live....its harder, more thumpin' and more representative of...well...Carl Cox Live !!(at least when he comes to Miami.....Crobar and Ultrafest come to mind). Carl is best when he's live and this is a good snapshop of his work. The tune selection is basic but you won't find the tunes on any of your other mixes !! Its quality fare and worth picking up, especially at used price. Hopefully Carl will mix Session 3 real soon. Mix one live in Miami, Carl !!! We're dying to see you again !!

This CD is fantastic (all the more so because I happened to spot it by chance walking out the store so it's not commercial like a lot of Coxy's stuff) and IMHO I think totally opposite to puthupa's "every single track is high-energy and rather than taking a journey, the mix is in your face the whole time" - that's what is SOOOOOOOOO good about it ! The vocals in tracks 7 & in particular 12 were the only thing that annoyed me but even my obsessive compulsiveness was overcome by the sheer beauty of everyting else. Again I disagree with puthupa's "I recommend the 'Sound of Ultimate BASE' mix instead" which does not have unique tracks on & is frankly lame by comparison and does not reflect the live night he runs/ran with Jim Masters. I also disagree with tonyb303's "unfortunately ruined by very annoying screams and yelling from the crowd" as I definitely agree these add to the effect and I don't think they're "marring every track" as where you do hear them they're pretty much background noise

Carl Cox is Awesome. He picks good vinyl to spin, and he does just that for this live recording, which is unfortunately ruined by very annoying screams and yelling from the crowd. Some crowd chatter during the intro of the CD is acceptable, but this album has it marring every track of this CD, which would have otherwise been masterpiece of Techno music. Somebody fire the sound guy who left the mic on during this recording, and tell that "chick" to quit screaming over all the good parts of the music! She made me waist $15 bucks, thanks a lot.

So many people are missing the point here.

Carl Cox is not a "take you on a magical journey" kind of DJ. If you want that, get a John Digweed CD. Carl Cox is not a "respect to the classics" or "vocals you can sing along to DJ", if you want that get a Danny Tenaglia CD.

Carl Cox is pure dancefloor mayhem and if you don't get it...it probably isn't for you anyway.

Techno is the most hypnotic and trippy of all electronic styles, as it pounds you into submission...it also puts your mind in an altered state. It is not meant to slowly build, it is not meant to entice you quietly onto the dancefloor...it is meant to POUND YOU OVER THE HEAD...until the beats enter your subconscious and don't let go.

Carl Cox is a true master behind the decks. He is tight in the mix (as tight as you can be when you are playing 25 tracks an hour on 3 turntables) and his programming is amazing. Along with Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath and Dave Clarke...they have been the true ambassadors of hard, banging beats over the last 10 years. And he deserves all the respect and adoration in the world.

If you want to relax and have a "mind altering" experience...look elsewhere. But if you want to rock out, get your groove on and have the music bang the hell out of your mind, body and soul...Techno is the soundtrack and Carl Cox is the maestro.

This is, by far, one of the worst mix cds I've ever heard. If this is what Cox sounds like live it would be a real waste of money. The most glaring problem is the lack of subtlety - every single track is high-energy and rather than taking a journey, the mix is in your face the whole time. Partially, the problem was listening to Cox's 'Sound of Ultimate BASE' mix the day before. That mix is exceptional, though not live.

Obviously a lot of people like it, but you have to take those opinions with a grain of salt. What people really like live is often influenced by the live experience and everything that entails - the atmosphere, crowd, setting and everything else that make you feel like it's the best night ever. Anybody who loves to see Cox live will love this cd. If you've never heard him, I recommend the 'Sound of Ultimate BASE' mix instead. I will say, however, that perhaps this wasn't Cox's best night behind the decks, and he tends to play longer sets so there's only so much you can get into 74 mins.

ps this is NOT 'deep house' by any means. It's a lot of good banging techno and house with nothing weaving it all together except a booming kick.

this is how a mix cd should be made!! live without much edits and what-nots...mixed live represents the way cox rocks the crowd: full of energy!! i wish the cd have a video in it also. to watch carl cox in person is an experience..

This album is a divergence from the normally upbeat dance music Carl Cox usaully spins. This album has its moments, however it is mostly downbeat. I was just suprised.

The soundtrack to the Movie hackers was great, Hackers 2 "inspired by" the movie was even better and to my surprise Hackers 3 was even better! Third time's the charm certainly applies to this CD and the series. All three were great and worth purchasing. If you only purchase on of the three though, I'd suggest this one!

He talkded about the missing song 'Squeeze - Heaven Knows' but you can find that song on the Original 1st Hackers Soundtrack. It's the alst track (Track 14)

P.S. Hackers is one of my all-time favourites, and ONE of the reasons why, is because of the excellent music they use...Especially when Dade and Kate (Crash & Burn) start battling it out on The Prodigy's 'ONE LOVE'...AMAZING!
I have the european DVD, so unfortunetely I do not have the 8-page booklet! (Damn!) And the DVD CHEAT (When you can watch an extra GIBSON Animation when you press the LEFT button to highlight the 'Hackers' logo) does not work on my DVD!! :( I can't buy the American one either, because it is Region 1, and even thoug it works on my DVD player, i would rather want all my DVD's to be Region 2 (For respect of my friends' DVD players)

didnt think to go buy the soundtrack at the time...

everytime watched the movie, that song stuck with me.
last week watched the movie again, wrote down 'choice'lyrics
to go look it up. lost paper, week later found it, went on a two hour search for this freakin' song!!!

The selection of artists is good though still throughout all three cd's the balcony song is missing( Massive Attack: Radiation ruling the nation).Still an album where you can pick anyone of the artists and buy the cd and be happy.

This is a rave classic. Cox knows basslines like no other. If you want hard driving, urban beats - go no further than this CD, which mixes electronic & persistent melodies over the hardest of beats. Favorite track? Afro Beatnik (1st song on Disc 2). It will stick in your head for days, if not weeks.

Buy this now. You won't regret it.

Love it!

If you're looking for bangin' techno Coxy, you won't find much of him here. That's not to say you won't be satisfied with what you get. This is more of a funky/tribal house effort here with some great collabs to boot. The only tracks I couldn't really get into were 3 & 4. Not to say they're bad tracks, just a little too "Diva" for me. I don't always mind vocals but these I could've done without. My only other gripe is the tracks were a little short in most cases & for the most part unusable in a DJ set, so if you're looking for unmixed tracks look elsewhere. Overall this is a great pumpin' album though, & all seemlessly mixed to make a non stop 66 minute groove.

this man does no wrong. he throws down all sorts of styles with only a slight instance or two where the mixing is questionable. showcases his infamous mix of Doug Lazy's "Let It Roll" with "French Kiss" from Lil' Louis. almost as good as hearing him live.

Carl Cox has fulfilled my expectations with this album. The smooth mixes and great track selection make this EASILY THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR. This album includes a little bit of everything. (ie. old skool funk,house,techno, and even latino beats here and there). Even with the widespread varieties of music, CARL COX still seems to make everything flow from one track to another, creating a NON-STOP adrenaline rush!
