I bought this for my wife as a present. She plays it all the time. great album.

Love the CD. Brought back SO many memories. Great quality, great sound! Will buy from seller again!

If you love Carly Simon, this is an excellent CD. It has some of her best music.

Here is the Carly Simon we grew up with singing the songs she did best. Each one is a gem and well mixed for effective listening in today's market. Two Hot Girls on a Hot Summer Night never received the glory of You're So Vain, Mocking Bird, That's the Way I always Thought it Would Be, or Anticipation, but is a wonderful addition to this CD. Kudos!!! Carly fans, BUY IT!

Yes this album is good. If you doubt it, you can watch her on A&E this sunday 6/29 at 9am. She is performing a few of her favorite songs and will be answering in-depth questions with Lynn Hoffman.

I was VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! Her voice is still the same, but her music was boring!

As one reviewer remarked, Carly Simon is not going to give us another 'No Secrets','Playing Possum' or 'Boys in The Trees". That was another space in time for us and for her. But this intimate look at where she is now is quite remarkable. In Fact, I would venture to say she sounds more vibrant and energized than most all her contemporaries. Always chronically under-rated and often over-looked, Simon has never really gotten the recognition she has deserved and unfortunately, it again seems to be the case with this latest work. Still, this work is indicative of a musician of great accomplishment.
Simon is such an icon and is behind so many great songs it is easy to dismiss this work after a few listens as 'not as great'. But you have all her trademarks here, unforgetable melodies and smart, concise lyrics. Listeners need to keep in mind, Simon has never been one to follow trends and her career has been so sporatic because it is easy to expect a certain style from her and have her sail off in a complete different direction with each new release. This is no exception, but it deserves many listens and an open mind.

I was so excited to see this album, that I purchased it on the spot...full price! I quickly popped it into my car and couldn't believe my ears. Her voice is gone...shot. It's not just the title song, it is every song. Poor breath management, poor intonation. I was so embarrassed for her. I can't imagine why she would have released such a poor representation of her once HUGE talent. I didn't like the lyrics, or the music. The entire thing was a disappointment. Once I arrived at a friend's house to pick her up, I said, "listen to this". I started the album again and handed her the jewel case. She looked at me in shock and said, "Poor thing must have no friends, or they would have told her not to release this album." It is THAT bad. I wish I could have gotten my money back.

This is a really nice comeback. The Latin rhythms and textures are inspired, and Carly weaves them beautifully with her own signature style.

One of my favorites is "They Just Want You to Be There," about raising kids:

"They don't care if you comb your hair. They just want you to be there.
They don't care if you stay upstairs. They just care that you're there.

They don't get that your striving to be someone and you're not sure
just how well you will fare. They just want you to be there."

Another one, "People Say A Lot When They Want the Job," has hair-raising tales of betrayal
by personal assistants! It's good that Simon felt free to share.
The detail is extremely precise in this song. Rewarding to fans who care.

I bought this CD months ago and still enjoy listening to various selections from the album as they come up on my morning walk. You will find humorous, witty and sometimes romantic lyrics; and rich emotion in the sound.

I grew up with the beautiful voice of Carly Simon. Her songs, when I hear them again, take me back to different times of my life. Over the years she had done nothing but get better.

I think it's wonderful that she made this CD her own effort by doing most of the writing herself and incorporating the talents of her children. The result of her brilliance is one of her best albums in terms of music and lyrics ever!

I can't recommend this album highly enough. I loved it as a kid in the 70s, my kids love it (we have it on LP record), and it's about time it got reissued on CD. It's more Simon and Garfunkel than the rather insipid Peter Paul and Mary, and is certainly more sophisticated than a lot of what passes for children's entertainment. You'll want to save it for your grandchildren too. ;) A timeless classic that can't be beat.

Do you ever get the feeling that you are being exploited by the major record companies ? I certainly do, and this is a good example. This album was recorded in 1972, yes, 1972, some 37 years ago. To the best of my knowledge it has never been remastered for CD. If it has been, Warner Music are keeping it a well kept secret, as it is never mentioned in the liner notes and these 3 chilling letters appear: AAD. (It was remastered for DVD-Audio only, and that has since been deleted and required DVD-A player compatibility). 25 years after its original release I purchased a Japanese pressing (AMCY-3017) issued in 1997 which was not remastered. Now, another 12 years later another edition has been released - still not remastered but on SHM-CD. If, and this is a big if, SHM-CD actually makes a difference in the clarity of the sound, why would they not remaster the recording first to obtain the best possible sound ? I will leave the conclusion to you. My advice is to think carefully before spending extra money on a format whose benefit is doubtful given the source material.

Carly Simon's "No Secrets" was the first album that I ever purchased. I was in first or second grade. Possibly it was the album cover that drew my little curious self in that particular direction of the store's record bins, but what an amazing find and buy. This was one of the most important albums of my childhood...I even eventually found it in a piano songbook so I could learn the songs on the piano and guitar. My favorite song is probably "Embrace Me You Child", although the rest of the album is wonderful. This is definitely a must have for any Carly Simon fan.

What does one say about his favorite singer's most famous album? Here is the absolute prime best of a GREAT singer. This is where her best known song comes from. If you don't know what song, quit now; I pity you. I guess everybody has an opinion as to who "You're So Vain" is about...I may as well give mine, though it may well be wrong...I don't think it's about anybody; the words just fit together well....

OK, you're still here. The whole album is fabulous. If you want just one of Carly's albums, THIS is the one. ["Reflections" is a collection; different matter] Maybe you're like me and already have ALL of Carly's albums; you're a wise, and lucky, person. Otherwise, this is one of the two essential albums for anybody over a certain age [Carole King's "Tapestry" being the other]. Five stars aren't nearly enough.

"Hello Big Man" features two of Simon's best songs: "It Happens Every Day" and "You Don't Feel the Same." Both appear to be simple folk songs on the surface, but the careful balance of longing and regret in the lyrics elevates them into something more profound. "Profound" sounds heavy, I know, but this album is not an earnest dissection of love. The music--particularly the reggae tunes--is breezy and melodic and Simon's voice has never sounded better. It's just that Carly Simon knows how to explore the vagaries of love in a remarkably conversational, casual way. That is her artistry, and those who label her as "lightweight" have missed the point. I hope the powers that be will resurrect this album. I do.

This is a "Wonderful" album that has been long "Out Of Print". How do these two match. I don't know, ask Warners Bros records. Carly has released three albums on their label and two have gone Out of Print. This and "Come Upstairs" and I'm afraid that "Torch" will soon have the same fait. I can belive this has been unavailable for so many years. I so glad that Amazon is doing something about it...

There isn't a dud here. The songs are full of heart. My most favorite here is You Know What To Do, it's fun, playful, and pure 80's fun (and the video isn't to bad either). It Happens Everyday and You Don't Feel The Same are heartfelt true stories, about her then lasting love for her X-husband James Taylor. Menemsha is a catchy little gem. Hello Big Man is also a true story, about how her mom and dad met, (he sad "hello little women" she sad "hello big man") and that's were the story began. Orpheus is beautiful, and Floundering sounds like Carly is poking fun at herself, with a good since of humor. Damn, You Get To Me is a great classic Carly arrangement. Is This Love is fun and Such A Good Boy is great up untill Carly start's talking in the background, then it gets just a little corney. I'm glad that Amazon is making it downloadable for all as Carly fan's who didn't get to get the album. This is Carly at the top of game. I highly recommend this album to any who likes (or loves) Carly. 10 out of 10.

What a songwriter Carly is! The title song on the CD and the video done of this song must have or should have won highest awards. This album is hard to find, but is worth the hunt! This is something that touches the heart of all who know a bit about her life through her work--- very well done.

...This wonderful CD has long been out of print, which is a crying shame. It commands huge prices on the secondary market, and I suspect that counterfeits may be floating around...I understand that a download has become available, but I prefer the "hard copy". Regardless, this may be the Carly CD that I play the most; I'm playing it as I type.

This 1983 release is from the heart of Carly's "rock" period; along with "Come Upstairs", it is the best of her rock albums, and it may well be the most "sexual" record she ever made [NOT explicit, or provocative; this isn't rap]. Here, the sex certainly isn't on the cover, but in the music itself. And yet, this is Carly; plenty of girls can entice, and still be forgettable...to entice with unfailing good taste, that's genius, and that's Carly.

The specific songs here are not Carly's best known; no BIG HITS. Still, they will grab you, and hold on. The title cut is one Carly's more personal songs, telling about her parents' love for each other; it's also one of her all-time masterpieces. "Menemsha" and "Such a Good Boy" are pure rock, and do, indeed, rock. "Orpheus", "You Don't Feel the Same" and "It Happens Every Day" are played at a much slower pace, but grab with equal strength. "Floundering" sounds confessional, but no clue who it's about. "Damn You Get to Me"...yes, Carly, you sure do, and have been for a long time.

This recording is an essentially unknown wonder. Maybe it will be re-released, or maybe you'll settle for the download. I love Carly, and am glad I have the CD. No CD ever made is worth the prices they get for this, but if one ever could be.....Carly is a living national treasure, her voice and beauty absolutely undiminished at 62. I know I've gushed; Carly does that to me, and my wife tolerates it [and she listens to her, too]. Try to get hold of this, and find out what the gushing is about...if only I could give 10 stars........

I've been waiting to buy this cd for the longest time and it was worth the wait... remembering all the old songs took me back many years when life was simpler and I was much younger...each song reminds me of a different chapter in my life..... thanks for the trip back down memory lane

One of my faves, Anticipation was used for a ketchup ad and really devalued the song. I can't listen to it now without thinking of the condiment. That has taken away from the quality of her work. Yes her tunes are catchy but the arrangements and lyrics are first rate. One of the most cynical songs is 'That's the way I've always heard it should be'. It was not a huge hit but I think it's one of her best. Her sensibility may be commercial but most of her songs are beautifully crafted. The melodies stick in your head, even if you don't want them to. Too bad she has a phobia about performing, otherwise I'd love to see a concert.

I'm a longtime fan of Carly Simon. I wanted a CD of hers, and I wanted a cheap one with excellent sound. So, 'The Best of Carly Simon' was an excellent solution. This is an excellent Carly set that documents her years on the Elektra label in the 1970s.

You get plenty of hits here. 'Mockingbird,' the duet with her then-husband James Taylor, 'You're So Vain,' 'Attitude Dancing,' and of course 'That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be.' If you want her
'70s chart hits, you'll find most of them here.

And, as I said earlier, Elektra did an excellent job remastering the songs.

If you're just starting your Carly collection, I recommend this set and her 1982 record 'Torch.' If you're a casual fan, than this is all you'll probably ever need.

The new release of the old vinyl is as good or better than the original. My adult son and I are playing it endlessly.

This has become one of my favorite albums when I want to listen to something soft and lovely. It complements a relaxed mood or creates one. I agree with the New York Times reviewer who called this album "luminous."

listening to this spare yet very elegant album is a joy indeed! goes to show why we fell in love with Carly in the first place.

I love listening to this cd when I am winding down after a long night at work. The baby likes it to.

Fortunately, I took advantage of auditioning the public library's copy of this before I placed an order for it. I looked forward to listening to this CD after having really enjoyed her earlier "Moonlight Serenade" CD. My first impression of this was that it was for playing in a baby's nursery. Perhaps that was the point, but the library's copy didn't have any of the liner notes to offer any explanation of the song choices. I didn't find anything here that I even found remotely interesting. Only recommended for ages 3 and under.

I listen to this CD almost every night as I put my infant daughter to bed. Carly's voice is so soft and amazing, that even songs like O' Susanna become lullabies, and I love singing along to "you are the love of my life" as my daughter drifts asleep... Perhaps I will never get tired of this one...

I grew up with Carly Simon's music. Now 60, I still appreciate the lyrics and her wonderful voice. She is the epitome of grace and humor, as a recenter encounter in NYC proved. I was speechless for a moment but was able to tell her how much her music has always appealed to me. "Boys in the Trees" qualifies for an all-time masterpiece!

I have been on a quest to get all of Carly's old albums on CD, and the collection keeps going up with this latest addition.

The first CD I bought of hers when I decided I loved her was 1975's Playing Possum and it has still been my favorite, followed closely by 1979's Spy and 1974's Hotcakes, but running around in there would be this 1978 effort which featured her hit "You Belong To Me" - a Michael McDonald co-write which brought her back to the top 10.

The rest of the album is just as clever and meaningful as anything she had done before, probably her last collaboration with James Taylor as they would divorce a few years later, Boys In The Trees contains their duet "Devoted To You" (an old 60's Everly Brothers song), and a hilarious Jamaiccan reggae thing called "De Bat (Fly In Me Face)", and some other little gems. If you're looking for classic Carly, this is one to get your hands on.

Carly has long been known for two things; great music, and great album covers. This album has both. There is a line between "sexy" and "provocative"; where this one falls is truly in the eye of the beholder. There is a story, maybe apocryphal, that this picture provided the inspiration for Sharon Stone's famous scene in "Basic Instinct". Maybe...there are several stories about that.

Forgetting the jacket [impossible, I know], this album presents Carly in her absolute prime. Speaking as an overage guy judging sexy album covers, I think "Hotcakes" tops them all. Musically, this is as good as it gets..."You Belong To Me" and the title cut are memorable; interesting idea in the closing cut...it may be best to avoid doing some things "For Old Time's Sake". This is a fabulous record...buy it, and enjoy.

Has there ever been a greater Chick song than "Boys in the Trees"? All the music is wonderful and brings back great 70s memories.

"Coming Around Again" was Carly's first album for Arista Records and her strongest selling album for at least eight years at the time of its release (1986). Carly invests the songs with passionate vocals and she showed her commercial and artistic chops as a writer by producing a program of insightful and memorable songs. The songs loosely follow the plot line of the movie "Heartburn," for which the song "Coming Around Again" was the theme.

Having heard most of Carly's releases, I believe that this is one of her strongest, most cohesive albums -- and also one of her most accessible. "Coming Around Again" ranks with her best work, including "No Secrets" (1972), "Boys In the Trees" (1978), "Spy" (1979), "Have You Seen Me Lately?" (1990), and "Letters Never Sent" (1994).

Carly Simon uses love songs and references to popular movies to teach profound life lessons.
Simon follows the path cut by greats such as King Solomon and the Danish Christian philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. Solomon used "The Song of Songs" parable to describe the love between G-d and the Jewish people, comforting and inspiring Jews throughout the centuries. Kierkegaard rightly saw that modern masses are not inspired by overt religiosity but can be moved if messages come cloaked in aesthetic works (works of art). Only gifted artists are capable of this, Kierkegaard noted. Carly Simon manages it with "Coming Around Again."
The 1987 disc's title track was used in the movie "Heartburn," Nora Ephron's thinly disguised account of her failed marriage to Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein. Ephron's script and Simon's song use the setting of a modern marriage to sketch the circle of life. The circular nature of reality is the strongest theme in Jewish rituals dealing with scholarship as well as life, death and mourning (death and mourning being stages on life's way). Wise gentiles have recognized this, too, including Gustav von Schmoller, an eminent German economist and historian who refused to explain phenomena outside of circular causation, and Joseph Schumpeter, a prominent disciple of Schmoller's.
Simon may well be showing us how she was coping with the dissolution of her marriage to James Taylor. Like any great work, the song "Coming Around Again" is enjoyable on many levels. It can be taken as a soundtrack for Jewish spirituality and perseverance, holding out hope for the future redemption -
"I know nothing stays the same
But if you're willing to play the game
It's coming around again."
Simon echoes King Solomon's "Song," crying out to her mate (G-d) amid suffering and jittery loyalty -
"And I believe in love
But what else can I do?
I'm so in love with you (You)."
The final track features bits of the title track mixed with the nursery rhyme "Itsy Bitsy Spider" (movie-goers will recall the poignancy this had in "Heartburn.").
"The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again."
The spider is us. The rain represents life's hardships. G-d is the sun. And the spout is Jacob's Ladder, the path of spirituality.
Our job is to develop the instincts of the spider, climbing back regardless of the number of times we're knocked down. As Rabbi Elyah Lopian reinforced in powerful discourses such as "The Healing Power of Torah and The Need to be Persistent," the righteous person is one who falls seven times but continues to rise and fight on.
Some who saw "Heartburn" might be tempted to equate the philandering husband (played by Jack Nicholson) with G-d. But those spidermen and spiderwomen mentally and emotionally equipped to climb the spout know G-d is loyal. The problem is us. We are disloyal thus our suffering (yet suffering is a good teacher). The Book of Job sums it up well - "This is the path you have chosen instead of obedience." Simon registers Jewish acceptance of this when she sings "Don't mind if I fall apart. There's more room in a broken heart."
Humphrey Bogart films are employed in further meditations on "the good life" (the false material-centered one) and spiritual life (the true good life). Being a full-fledged member of American media royalty thanks to her own effort and those of her father Richard (the "Simon" in the Simon & Schuster book publishing house), Carly Simon knows this struggle intimately.
Simon again goes inside contemporary marriage in "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of." That phrase is lifted from "The Maltese Falcon" (directed by John Huston) and we're reminded how Mary Astor's character lost everything by chasing the material. Simon is giving a pep talk to desperate wives as well as those stuck in a rut with G-d:
"Take a look around now
Change the direction
Adjust the tuning
Try a new translation
Don't look at your man in the same old way
Take a new picture
Just because you don't see shooting stars
Doesn't mean it ain't perfect
Can't you see...
It's the stuff that dreams are made of..."
Between the lines we glimpse that had the woman married according to Biblical protocol (for proper procedure see Genesis 24:67 regarding the union of Isaac and Rebekah) she likely wouldn't be frustrated.
Simon's version of "As Time Goes By" transports us back to the "Casablanca" of Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. We recall Rick's (Bogie's) great act of unselfishness. If we view Simon's "Give Me All Night" as the Jew's relenting desire to be filled with truth and discernment and "Do The Walls Come Down" as lamenting the fall of Jerusalem and the dispersion of the Jewish people across the planet then "As Time Goes By" can be seen as G-d's response, telling the Jews that I scattered you in order to teach Torah to humanity and gather in converts. A la Bogart, G-d chose loneliness in His house (the Land of Israel) for the greater good. The song holds the promise of reunion that will strengthen the original love -
"And when two lovers woo
They still say I love you
On that you can rely
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by."
Whether she knows it or not, Carly Simon has written an anthem for full-time Torah scholars in "Give Me All Night." She employs Jewish imagery (rabbinical literature compares the Jewish people to the moon) and is helping fulfill a prophecy that the songs of the nations and the stadiums of Rome will be used to teach Tanach and Talmud -
"Give me all night
Give me the full moon
And if I can't take the whole of you (You)
Give it to me any way
Give me all night
Till the last star fades
And if you (You...G-d) can't take my heart and soul
Take it from me any way."
The necessity and usefulness of suffering comes up again in "You Have to Hurt." The wisdom comes straight from another Jewish source - Holocaust survivor and logotherapy pioneer Dr. Viktor Frankl (read VF's "Man's Search for Meaning.").
Simon (again through the lens of modern romance):
"You have to hurt - to understand.
You have to get by the best you can
Until you hurt - until you cry
You won't know about love
And the reason you're alive
You have to hurt."
The Jewish relationship with G-d is once more subtext in "All I Want is You." As befits her impressive talent, Simon is playful and serious at the same time.
"So chase me around the room
Make me crazy like the moon
They can never guess
In the silences
All I want is you (You...G-d)
And the sexy hurricane that we share..."
"Coming Around Again" was clearly therapeutic for Simon, encouraging her to overcome relationship and artistic failures and return to live performances and greater creativity. She points to the importance of friendship in dedicating the work to the director of "Heartburn."
"To Mike Nichols. For luring the spider out of the web and over to the spout. This album is dedicated to you, my dear friend."

.....anytime. We all know that Carly has had her ups and downs over the years....this 1987 album dates from a time when she was coming up from a down...obviously, she recovered well. Maybe she suffers from some "excessive" arrangements of these songs, but the songs are still great, and the voice was in fabulous shape.

A few cuts deserve special mention...."As Time Goes By" is, of course, a standard. The lyrics are gender-neutral, so a wide variety of singers have sung it; some even have done it well...Carly is as good as any, though the arrangement is not my favorite. The rendition of the kids' classic "Itsy Bitsy Spider" is charming, and "Two Hot Girls" is my personal favorite from the album....if the other girl ["Jenny", whoever that may be] is as hot as Carly, I'd like to meet her. As referred to in my title, "Give Me All Night" is one of Carly's best rock songs.

This is not Carly's best known, or even best, album. Still, it's a great record; Carly's average is far beyond most singers' best ever. Essential for Carly fans [who already have it, anyway], and highly recommended for everyone else.

I couldn't get enough of this CD when it came out in 1987. It's still an enjoyable listen, but twenty years' hindsight reveals what a leaden touch Arista had in producing their artists. Every song sounds as if Phil Spector were in the next room screaming "more stuff!" Not one song is allowed to breathe; they all have to soar, with maximum instrumentation, overdub vocals, etc. How much more satisfying it would have been if a few of the numbers had been done simply! Example: why clutter up "As Time Goes By"? You've got a piano, and Carly, and Stevie Wonder's terrific harmonica for accent -- nothing else needed.

(BTW, Arista didn't only do this to Carly Simon. I remember being at an Arista-sponsored Whitney Houston concert in 1986 and thinking: this girl's got one of the great voices of all time, but why is every number over the top? A great arranger would have gone for contrast, letting Whitney rip on the powerhouse numbers while toning the ballads way down.)

That said ... the songs here are SO damn good, and Simon's voice is in top form. "Coming Around Again" is an example of how a talented songwriter can get personal without being mawkish or boring. Carly, if you ever get restless, how about giving us an "Unplugged" version?

Simon released this phenomenal work of art way before the "cover" album became the norm. Her voice has so much range and emotion that it's almost a little too heartbreaking to listen to. Two songs in particular: "I Get Along Without You Very Well" and "What Shall We Do With the Child" evoke a sadness that becomes so haunting you wonder who the hell hurt her so badly. All the songs are sung as if she is in an empty theater, her voice echoing in solitude. But these songs with this kind of singer doesn't happen very often. Don't let another day go by without it. By the way, does anyone know who the gorgeous blonde/brad pitt before his time actor Carly is clutching to on the album cover? I know, and i'd be singing songs like these if he passed me by too.

i liked the first 4 sung notes of "The Blue of Blue" but hated the rest of this album. after this one, i lost momentum, and never bought another carly simon album. except for her 1st one, all the albums prior to this were such winners; i was such a fan. not that i don't like old fogey music--i do--but i don't think it fits her. hotcakes, another passenger, boys in the trees, anticipation, spy i loved to death. but not this. i wouldn't waste your money unless you try the samples here and it strikes you better than it did me. sorry, carly.

Using Classic Torch as a vehicle, Carly shows her audience the pain of the public divorce she was going through. So full of emotion, one could weep with her. Possibly only those of us who have experienced divorce with small children could have the deep understanding of the tragedy that was enveloping her.
