City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra

This is a great CD from a great group. One problem though: Amazon ships single CDs in a padded envelope that does not provide adequate protection. Mine arrived with the jewel case broken. A friend had the same thing happen. I had another order with a CD and a DVD and it was packed in a cardboard box and arrived safely. Amazon needs to change their packaging method for single CDs and DVDs.

This was the first time I had heard the Libera group as I was sent the CD as a gift. To begin with I really didn't care for some of the music - remember I hadn't heard this style of choral singing before and it took a bit of getting used to, but I sat down on Saturday and listened right through and by the time it was finished I was hooked. I loved the setting of Bach's Air on a G String in particular, and then right at the end the performances of Blake's Little Lamb and the In Paradisum are exquisite. This is a very fine choir matching in quality the Westminster Cathedral choristers, and I really can't recommend the disk too highly.

Libera continues to put out great music. Though the music is basically the same type of music as their other CD's. This CD has a slightly different feel to it in my opinion. Their music is part ethereal and part just plain fun. They sound like they enjoy singing together and being part of Libera. It would be great to be able to see them live in concert to see that joy and enthusiasm that they put into their singing on the CD's. Anyone who is a fan of boy treble singers and boy's choirs should buy this CD.

The latest Libera CD to add to my collection, "New Dawn," is slightly different than previous Libera CDs, in my opinion. This does not diminish the quality and artistry of the music in this CD in any way. Among the classic Libera style tracks are two tracks that one would classify as "pop" and "new age." One of the tracks I'm referring to is, "Love and Mercy" which was written by Brian Wilson and was performed by Libera on December 2007 at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. The other track is a cover of Enya's "Orinoco Flow" which is superbly performed. Some of the tracks on "New Dawn," such as "Ave Maria," and "In Paradisum" which is entitled "Lux Aeterna" in previous CDs, have been previously recorded with other Libera soloists. The songs Libera re-records on their later CDs only get better, not that the earlier ones are any less, so assuredly, you won't be disappointed if you buy a Libera CD with previously recorded songs. As I said before, "New Dawn" is a CD slightly different from other Libera CDs but still has the beautiful, angelic harmonies which Libera is known for. I highly recommend Libera's latest masterpiece, "New Dawn."

A few years ago, one reviewer wrote this of "Luminosa":
"Classical purists will be aghast at Handel and Debussy sharing space with digital sound sculpting, which leaves "Luminosa" free to find a home as easily accessible, superior background music."

"New Dawn" continues Libera's tradition of producing communicative, superior vocal music to the infuriation and befuddlement of the "purists" and establishment snobs. In other words, this is classical--and not-so-classical--music for people who hate classical music (or classical purists).

The eclectic nature of the disc is demonstrated immediately, as "Orinoco Flow" shares space with a novel placement of the "Gloria" text to Camille Saint-Saens' "Organ Symphony," and an ethereal, inexpressibly moving arrangement of Bach's "Air" for three voices, exploiting the very highest notes of the treble range. Even a die-hard "purist" has to acknowledge the talent and expressiveness of the voices in this arrangement. On that note, Bach himself was well known for his transcriptions of his own music for other mediums and occasions; criticizing the ensemble for doing the same is awfully ridiculous.

"Love and Mercy" was given at the very end of the Kennedy Center Honors last year in recognition of Beach Boys' member Brian Wilson and is a slightly more involved arrangement than other tracks on the disc (such as the first). "May the Road Rise Up" and especially "In Paradisum" are soul-stirring breaths of fresh air.

The "choir" is magnificently versatile, from the pop strains of "Orinoco Flow" through the gentle notes of Bach's "Air," and finally the powerful sound of the "Gloria." Like "Angel Voices," "New Dawn" strikes a balance between the somewhat traditional work that was highlighted on releases like "Libera" and "Luminosa," and the rather popular, almost dance ambience of "Free." There are some beautiful moments here, but it still needs something strikingly groundbreaking: another "Sanctus" or "I am the Day."

If you're new to Libera, start with "Luminosa" or their self-titled album, as these contain their more well-known work, before moving on to "New Dawn." The album immediately previous to this one, "Angel Voices," is a fine cross-section of their work spotlighting the choir's unique sound.

Nonetheless, a fine offering with wide appeal (unless you're an ultra-purist, but who cares for them anyway?)

For those of us that have collected soundtracks for many years and specially John Williams' music, it might seem a little redundant to buy this four disc compliation of his music that has every single track that I am sure every collector owns at least once.
However once you start listening to the pieces you start to notice the little differences in their performance from the original versions.
There are subtle changes in rythm and tempo and even different instruments play certain parts.
These nuances make this redition of Willams' music a most enjoyable one.

He's the best....the music of John Williams all in one awesome set...always amazed at the amount of work from this talent.

If you love john williams like I do, well then you will love this product.

I received this as a gift. I was a little concerned when reading that it wasn't conducted by Maestro Williams, and played by the LSO. But, Bateman and Raine do a terrific job and bring a nice fresh perspective on these popular works. The City of Prague Philharmonic performs wonderfully and the sonic quality is terrific.

You'll find most of Williams's most well-known works for film represented here, but a number of his lesser known, but very excellent works are missing. This really should have been a five or six CD set.

But all in all, this is the best recording of John William's works that I've heard in a long time.

There isn't one sinlge track in this whole 4-disc compilation that isn't worth buying. Great purchase, totally recommend it.

Hans Zimmer is one of the most Beautiful Composers in the last decade and I am overwhelmed & delighted with his music.

By 2003, Hans Zimmer was working on his 100th--yes, one hundredth--feature film score. This is a rich two-disc collection that will remind you of some well loved movies: Driving Miss Daisy, Rainman and Da Vinci Code. The high point is the three tracks from Gladiator (one of those times when "music better than movie") and a rollicking couple of tracks from "Pirates of the Caribbean" (in the words of John Lennon: "Play loud").

If you try to analyze Zimmer's melodies, they are simple, often four of five notes on a simple descending scale. But just when you think he's giving you soft rock pop, along comes a heartbreaking melody that you'll sing all day. The arrangements here are interesting, and never an endless verse-chorus-verse repeat.

The album has a variety of fully orchestral tracks and some where the sythesizer is prominent. Its a great program and with two discs an excellent value.

I am a big fan of Zimmer in general, he has done some of my favourite scores. however i don't think this double CD is really worth buying unless you are new to Zimmer and want a brief overview of some of his work. There's seems a couple of odd choices on here when there is so much classic stuff to choose from, and i would thoroughly recommend getting the scores seperately to any film you may have seen which caught your ear.I don't think the arrangments here particularly add anything to the experience either, and if like me yuo enjoy the scores partyl as a memory of the film, i think you're better off with the original tracks and arrangments.
Shame, could have been better.

Silva's newest composer compilation is a great addition to it's "Essential" line of CD releases.

Highly recommended for fans who are not familiar with Hans Zimmer's music, or those who want to hear a different take on it.

Producer James Fitzpatrick states in the informative liner notes that "the orchestrators, arrangers and myself decided to go for a totally symphonic approach and treatment of the music : as if the music has been arranged for the concert hall....Other tracks are all essentially orchestral but with a few subtle synthetic additives, mostly in the "bottom end" and the percussion department."

Definitely worth a spin, and a welcome release to put all the Silva Zimmer tracks in one fine collection.

I've been playing this music as well as other Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtracks because I love the music.
It is also my theme Music for the current financial crises created by the "The Pirates of Wall Street" and "The Pirates of Finance".
The "Pirates of Oil" can't be blamed too much, since the "Pirates of Wall Street" and "Pirates of Finance" highly contributed to the overly priced futures.

I was not really into the the movie until I heard the music while watching the Dead Man's chest(the one played by Keira Knightley). I bought this CD, hoped it remind me that feeling. The music is still good. However, I don't know why, it is not as good as it played in the movie.
I wonder if other soundtrack CD is better than this one or not.

i really enjoy listening to the soundtrack from the pirates movies. this was done pretty good. some of the songs i enjoy more than others. i love the "davey jones" song it is so haunting. i love the movies, but when i can't be watching them, now i can listen and imagine.

For the beginning of Star Wars in 1977 until the 1990's, few movies outside of those scored by John Williams had soundtracks that could be considered great orchestral music. Then came movies like Willow, Dragonheart, Gladiator and then the Lord of the Rings movies. Great original soundtracks now became more common. After the LOTR trilogy, maybe the best soundtrack this decade is that from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. This one-CD sampler contains most of the key pieces from all three movies, and is a great buy. The sound and orchestration is all but indistinguishable from that heard in the movies. The melodies are rich, the keys are spot on, and the price is quite good considering that each of the individual movie soundtracks sell for similar prices. Also a plus is the cover insert. It gives a brief overview of how the POTC ride became the POTC movie; and how the music composers were chosen. Overall, a great buy.

This CD is a fantastic way to expose your children to orchestral music! It is great fun to listen to but no fluff involved! It is packed full of up-beat, well-written orchestral music that will help anyone who thinks this type of music is for old-people to realize that in fact orchestral music is indeedy for intelligent, fun-loving scallywags!!!

This cd is BEAUTIFUL. The andante quasi lento e contabile movement of the Carol Symphony is a must have. Don't hesitate to pick up this gorgeous album.

This is a great Christmas disc for those who want something a little off the beaten path. There are several very interesting original works based upon known (and sometimes unknown) Christmas music themes. The Prague Phil is a great form, and the price can't be beat! Very pleasant, and worth a hear. Enjoy!

A wonderful Christmas musical addition to your CD library. Excellent arrangements with full orchestra in classical style. Good stuff.

This is a delightful holiday CD of music inspired by Christmas carols. The works recorded (all by British composers) here were the result of Christmas concerts that symphony orchestras began adding to their calendars in the 20th century as an alternative to the Messiah and Bach's Christmas Oratorio. The longest of the works recorded here is the Carol Symphony of Victor Hely-Hutchinson, composed in the mid-1920s. It is cast in four movements although the symphony is to be played without a pause. Each movement is based on a single carol but the second and last movements make use of a second carol theme. Improvisations on Christmas Carols by Bryan Kelly is set in five short movements with each based on a single carol and include God rest ye merry gentlemen, I saw three ships and Ding dong merrily on high. Bethlehem Down is a short piece by Peter Warlock, originally for voice, is arranged here a string orchestra by Philip Lane whose own Wassail Dances is included on this disc. The Dances are based on three drinking songs that are sung during the Christmas season in England. The final work is A Christmas Carol Symphony by Patric Standford that is also cast in four movements and makes use of several carols notably Deck the Halls, God rest ye merry gentlemen, Away in a manger, On Christmas Night and ends with We wish you a merry Christmas.

The music is very well played and recorded. The music is imaginatively orchestrated and is perfect as a supplement to hearing the ubiquitous renderings of the Halleluiah Chorus of Handel.

This is a great product if you are a Harry Potter movie fan. It has the best of the first four movie songs and you get to hear them without changing out to different soundtracks. It is fun and easy to listen to.

This is the only CD I have of the music from the Harry Potter movies. I love it. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for one CD. You won't be disappointed.

The music is very enjoyable ; I just wish there was more of the main Harry Potter theme .

After watching the HP films, the first thing I thought about was, "Where can I get the music?" I absolutely love this collection of songs for many reasons. First of all, I hate to get soundtracks and realize that each song is only 1-2 minutes long. This is SO not the case with this disc. Each sweeping song is just long enough for each listener to get their fill. Another reason why this cd is great is because it compiles the two best composers from the series: John Williams (of course) and Patrick Doyle. Not that the other composers are bad, but these two, in my opinion, are amazing. Whenever I listen to this record (which is great for long car trips!), I find myself remembering the bits in that particular film that it came from, and I'm transported to the world of HP. The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra creates magic with this album! This cd is an excellent buy for anyone who likes HP, or who simply likes great classical music.

This CD is good, but not as good as the 1st and 5th soundtracks. It does allow you to hear specific songs from the movie that bring back the scenes: dance from #4 and march from #4. It's good if you want to review the Harry Potter movies, but I don't find it as relaxing for background music as the others. I think for me, I'm just not as much a fan of Patrick Doyle's compositions to hear outside the movie, as I am John Williams.

This is an absolutely wonderful tribute to one of the greatest composers of all time. John Williams knows what he is doing, and it is shown through this collection of some of his best work. I especially love Track two from the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha." A very beautiful track and furthers my admiration for this amazing musician. Be assured, you will enjoy this CD. I strongly recommend this CD for all music lovers and all others who need to hear some great music. Enjoy!

Can one say that they have arrived when there is a greatest hits recording by a third party? The answer is a resounding yes in the case of Thomas Newman. Seven of his Oscar nominated scores as well as his Emmy award-winning theme Six Feet Under are represented on this Silva release performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and London Music Works. James Fitzpatrick and Rick Clark selected (14) tracks Newman did for films between 1994-2006, the two decades that have brought him to the top of the A list in composers. Son of Alfred Newman, a (9) time Oscar winner, brother of David, film composer, and cousin to Randy Newman another Oscar winner, the family just keeps on producing wonderful scores.

Don't expect to hear a lot of the quirky material that has become his trademark although "Dead Already" from American Beauty and the "Theme" from Six Feet Under are included which spotlights percussion, pizzicato strings, unusual instruments, and just plain weird sounds! The difficulty in duplicating this for a concert hall setting is going to be who is going to play them and where are you going to get the instruments. Couple this with the mixing in of separate tracks to the OST material and you're never going to be able to do it. The emphasis of this CD is placed on the sweeping melodies, lush arranging, and just plain old fashion playing to bring a lump to your throat and a tear to your eye. Shawshank Redemption, Meet Joe Black, The Green Mile, and Cinderella Man are good examples of his classic concert works. While both Road to Perdition, and Finding Nemo could have had the quirky nature depending on the cue chosen, the road of conservatism prevailed and these tracks are also softer moments, more of the easy listening style. One of his latest works The Good German, a return to the music style of his father is nicely captured in two cues. Having said that the trained ear could still get a whiff of the Thomas trademark in the strings and harmony. Little Women, always a favorite of this reviewer, is not only included but features a Thomas Newman arrangement

Think of this release as a pleasant one-hour concert written by a composer who truly knows how to write a melody, one that you would be humming to yourself or out loud as you leave the theater. But it is extremely important to keep in mind that this is performed concert style, a nice way to listen to your music. An individual could easily pick apart each and every track on this recording. Oh, this four bar motif in the brass wasn't included or the E flat clarinet is missing in Finding Nemo. As a serious reviewer I took the time to put together (4) of the selections with the OST followed by this Silva recording and found that while different the performance, orchestration and arranging were more than acceptable. To many of the hard core soundtrack listeners your own personal compilation CD is in order and this CD is not recommended. If you want a nice one hour listening experience this CD will fill the bill. If you are somewhat new to the world of Thomas Newman this is an excellent introduction. If you like what you hear there are numerous recordings available to explore. Recommended!!!

After an extensive audio review of the available Star Wars sound tracks, I found this one to capture the emotion and drama the best.

John Towner Williams (born February 8, 1932) is an American composer, conductor and pianist. In a career that spans six decades, Williams has composed many of the most famous film scores in history, including those for Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones films, Jurassic Park, Hook, Schindler's List, Born on the Fourth of July, and Harry Potter --- In addition, he has composed theme music for four Olympic Games, NBC Nightly News, and numerous television series and concert pieces --- He served as the principal conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993, and is now the orchestra's laureate conductor.
