Deep Dish

I am up to my third copy of this c.d and am wishing I could find a flawless disc in amongst the 6.
The music is superb but the Singaporean pressing are appalling.

Sasha's San Fransisco and Deep Dish's Moscow...nothing else compares (Tenaglia's Athens may come close)....these guys are Steely Dan or Wishbone Ash of electronica!!! I love Sander and Desyn...f'ing sexy jamming house...but it is San Fransisco and Moscow that I throw in when I am the most f'ed up!!! San Fransisco captures the ecstasy spirit like no other, and Moscow--I haven't heard another CD as groove heavy as this...I am, and have been, speechless for all these years!!!

I still think 2001 was one of the greatest years for the world of elecronica and Global Underground 21: Moscow is yet another fantastic album to back up my claim. Deep Dish premiers for GU with one of the series most "live sounding" albums.

Disc 1 launches off with 4 exceptional tracks in a row, but the remixes of Dido's "Thank You" and Ilo's "Rapture" (desptie their remix being vastly superior to the original track) could have been skipped over or substituted to improve the set overall.

Disc 2 is a brillant set that includes two distinct drops in tempo (after tracks 7 and 12) revealing its true purpose. A set specifically designed for the later half of great clubbing night out with those two purposeful tempo changes strategically placed, allowing the occupants on the dance floor to soak it all in. Generally I've never been a fan of dub's and remixes but these guys are so good at improving on original tracks. Fatboy Slim's "Bird of Prey" is a pretty average track in my opinion but I love the Dish's remix. This set would have been a great one to dance the night away to.

Disc 1 gets 4/5 stars, and disc 2, 4.5/5 stars.

I agree with most of the reviews already on here. Both discs have stellar track selection, but there are some that seemingly don't belong, etc.
Having said that, I still listen to both of these CDs pretty dam often. Specifically disc one, the mix from I Can See the Lights through Hot is great, because the tracks go together so well.
Disc two is kind of like two mixes in one. It goes from track one up to I feel stereo, the track runs out, and then Bird of Prey starts at its beginning and the mix takes an entirely new direction (that's not to say this isn't good - Manilla Sunrise is a great track).

Also I'd like to note that I just got two 10" subs in my car, and Moscow sounds great out of them.

In summary, this album is well worth the money - I've got most of the global underground albums and this one has a place with me.

The only reason I got this CD was because it was recorded in Moscow, my home town. The double Cd has a few tracks that I enjoyed but for the most part it was a very blah CD for me. I have seen Deep Dish live and enjoyed their music, but this Cd just didn't do it for me.

An interesting glimpse into Deep Dish's earlier beginnings is back on the shelves. Penetrate Deeper is definitely not for electronica fans that love Deep Dish's 21st century work. This album is solidly house minus any "progressiveness". Not surprising, as the original release date is three years prior to the unofficial induction of the progressive subgenre of house music.

The album is fun and happy, but lacks depth. Deep Dish tend to overuse their featured vocalists on their own albums. Penetrate Deeper is no exception.

There are only a handful of old electronica albums that warrant re-releases. This is not one of them.

Note--this is a re-release of an OLD Deep Dish cd, but it is excellent! Definitely lets you see the beginnings of what they sounded like when they started. Quite different than now, IMHO. But, some great house tracks, and BT is on here also. I picked up the first issue in 1995 when I kept hearing 'Lonely Winter' at the club and was loving it. Also, desperately wanted to find Chocolate City but had to wait all the way until the "Junk Science" album to get it on cd. Sigh-brings me back to the good old days.

I normally buy any Deep Dish release without reading the reveiws or listening to it first. This definitley sounds older and I was expecting a little more. Maybe a good one for serious DD fans but I prefer their newer stuff (Global Underground).

LOVE IT SHOWS THEY WERE MILES AHEAD !

I remember buying this CD in 1995 solely because it was on the old TRIBAL AMERICA label (Remember them?). I had never heard of Deep Dish and I just started to learn how to DJ. I was into house music for a few years and decided to give it a shot because I recognized Carl Craig and I heard the "Cassa de X" track when I used to go clubbing.
I have to say that this CD changed how I felt about house music. I liked it before Penetrate Deeper but LOVED it after. I'd listen to this over and over, mesmerized by the slow building and hypnotic nature of the tracks. When TRIBAL went under, I was saddened to realize that this CD may not get the opportunity to touch others like it did me. It is a relief to see that it has been rereleased.
Tracks like "Cassa de X", "Lonely Winter, "Feel The Fire", and "The Dream" were my personal favorites. At the time, I never heard house music like this. I was used to the NYC/NJ garage influenced style. (MAW, Todd Terry,MK,JohNick, etc.)
Please listen to it with an open mind. It is only a single CD, and remember that this originally came out in 1995! Many of the tracks are 10 years old. I'd still listen to my old copy often and reflect with a smile on my face.

Time has not been overly kind to this album, but Yoshiesque still remains Deep Dish's breakout album and is worth a listen. An incredible change in feel and sound occurs between this album and Penetrate Deeper. The duo's skills on the decks and with sound editing make a clear and discernable advancement.

Disc 1 is a little unusual for a Deep Dish set with the featuring of 17 shorter tracks. "Under The Water" by Brother Brown (feat. Frank'ee) is terrible, but the excellent "Rollercoaster" by Amoeba Assasin also makes it way onto the set.

Disc 2's "Darkness" by Satoshi Tomiie is a great track. I'm not sure what was going through their heads with the inclusion of a dub by the Culture Club or N'Dea Davenport. Definitely a product of Sharam's tastes.

The album is worth a listen, but if you missed it, I don't think it is worth buying. Not one of their strongest albums.

Disc 1 gets 3.5/5 stars, and Disc 2, 3/5 stars.

I only bought this cd for the song "Under the Water" that is unavailable anywhere else. The rest of the cd is dull and will most likely give you a headache after listening to three songs.

Simply One Of The Best Progressive House Compilations. Some of the most soughted out DJs of our time. A neat duo of Iranian-American, US based duo is yet to be a superstar. Electronic music is yet to be discovered by many. Great Electro Sound Put With Soothing Vocals! It also contains a state of Trance, which makes me love it more! You Should also check out Volume 2, which is a tad bit better, yet nonetheless, Deep Dish are one of my favorite remixers. Great For Listening To Anywhere In The World (whether at home or in the car)! This is some of the best "stuff" to chill to.

I keep on coming back to this set even though many others from 1999 are bypassed. I can't quite define why this is way above the rest.
One has to have it as part of a collection.

This is like one of the best sets i have ever heard after hearing this set I wanted to say that Deep Dish could be the world's best but then again maybe its just me! I really dont know what to say but this is my kind of music! This cd is my best its up there with Hong Kong by Digweed even though the music is a bit different! I end up listening to the first disc more then second cause i guess it is more laid back and that is how i am laid back! The second disc is more hyped I lisin to it when i am in a very good mood thats when it works the best! I would recomend this set to anyone that likes house and pro house! So just lisin to the samples and buy the sets its a special one!!!

This review is solely for Sharam's Afterclub mix release for the limited edition of GU025: Toronto four disc set. Apparently it has to be purchased separately now.

I differ from most reviewers in that I liked Dubfire's Afterclub mix better than Sharam's. Sharam's Afterclub mix is still packed full of good tracks but not as many great tracks as Dubfire's. However, the inclusion of "You Are Sleeping" (track 11) is what ultimately pushed me to give this album a less that perfect rating. Sorry, but I hate narrative tracks. Listen to it once or twice and you'll find yourself reaching for the skip button.

Sharam's Afterclub mix gets 4/5 stars.

Firstly, if you are, like me, & into quality progressive house music then this is a MUST-HAVE in anyone's collection. Deep Dish is true genius!! Whether you're a hoarder of their work or not, you will know that these two guys have released a bevvy of seamless CD's. I have been searching for both these CD's for ages & was amazed to find them still available. This being one of two "Afterclub" accompaniments to their "Global Underground - Toronto" release. Mixed by Sharam (the other by Dubfire), it amazes me how they both manage to capture your interest with the first track & slowly take you on an enigmatic journey into deep, tribal, hypnotic house. Standout tracks from the likes of the self-titled "Solar Plexus" (which 'rattles' along), "Black AM" by Watkins (an awesome remix of a classic), "Soft Pleasure" by The Porn Headquarters (what I would call 'groovy' deep-funk), "You Are Sleeping" by PQM (Luke Chable 'carves-up' a much deeper mix than previously heard on "Hernan Cattaneo - South America") & finally "Alive" by The Greek ends the set with a thumping bass-line washed over with the ghostly voice of Stephanie Vezina.
The only criticism I have with this release, as with any Deep Dish CD, is that you just don't want to "get off the train once you've boarded". Their mixing is second-to-none, combined with a track selection to keep any party going.
If you 'dig' this then do yourself a favour and check out "Global Underground - Deep Dish - Toronto", i believe to be their BEST release to date. Also worth a mention, in the same series "Global Underground - Sharam - Dubai" (most recent release) & one of their early gems "Penetrate Deeper"; a smooth funky house collection.
Deep Dish - you ROCK!!!

This cd is brilliant, great for chilling out after a long night.

Anyway this sharam after club mix is some of the best progressive house you will here.

Sharam's after club is a very nice fun mix of pro house , some tracks that stand out to me are, solar plexus, watkins black am, and the last two tracks but the solar plexus is a amazing bass line track very addicting but over all the cd has very good track selection

I have read that several reviewers found the album disappointing. I dont claim to be an advanced listener but I am no novice either and this album is still played very regularly at parties among most of our circle who are very into Dance Music.

It stands the test of time and Deep Dish are probably among the most consistently delivering of all the DJs out there. As they are individually as Sharam and Dubfire.

Keep the albums coming - you at least have one guaranteed customer!

"George Is On" is the long awaited follow up to Deep Dish's first LP "Junk Science." Unfortunately Sharam's excitement depicted on the album cover doesn't translate to the music. I'm not sure what the problem is, but the music is just sort of uninspired.

The biggest indicator is that the "big tune" and first single of the album, "Flashdance", is not nearly as catchy as they think it is. If the major track on the album isn't just incredibly strong, that doesn't speak well for the rest of the album. The song is not bad and some parts are cool, the endlessly repeating guitar riff is not 'rockin' enough to carry the song. "Say Hello", the other standout, also underperforms. The rest of the tracks are even less memorable. The production is fine and the CD sounds good, but it's so musically uninspiring that nothing really stands out.

To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of progressive house (or whatever you want to call it), but I enjoy it when it's well done. This is the sort of album that die-hard house fans might enjoy, but for those who only buy a few albums per year in this style should avoid it. I would instead recommend checking out Deep Dish's Global Underground DJ sets, or buying "Junk Science" if you don't have it already. It's disappointing to be giving a Deep Dish CD such a negative review, but it's just not worth buying.

I was pretty excited about Deep Dish's second studio album. In my opinion, when these guys mix as a duo, they are difficult to top. Anyone who has had the pleasure of listening to them live would probably agree unless they don't like house and progressive house music. Unfortunately, I don't think their amazing mixing skills translate into the world of producing.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from this album. Probably something a little closer to the tracks featured in their amazing four disc set, Global Underground 025:Toronto.

George is On contains four tracks that I actually enjoy. The rest are very mediocre and a couple are fairly lame.

If you love GU021:Moscow and GU025:Toronto and expect similar tracks on this album...you will be DEEPly disappointed. I was.

The commercial mixes of Deep Dish.
If you are just getting into electronic music, this would be an option. Obviously not a cd for the advanced...

first> i have to say i've always admired deep dish for being the
masters-of-the-trade that they truly are. they rate in the highest echelon
of dj/remixers modern music has seen. their ability to take some plainly
palatable music and push it to the edge is legend just as is their ability
take some pretty wild experimental stuff and pull it back to some digestable,
needless to say, danceable middle-ground.
but this album lacks in more than one department and it has nothing to do with
artistic freedom-of-choice....or perhaps it has everything to do with it.
i actually think it has to do with fear.
the fear of not being ALL that one can be and becoming less than what you were
yesterday.
the album sports a silly title and cover to begin with.
there is the obvious attempt to be political and fashionable at the same
time.
the jumping in the air in posed-mannered excitement in asian track-suits
is more teen-age than new-age or future-core age or
even old-age (wise-age).
then again i'd be excited too if i got stevie nicks in my studio.

the songs...(and it's always about the songs) are simply lacking here.
there's so much talent here all put to very little use.
it's like ten most-crafty carpenters driving in a finish-nail in a coner piece of
baseboard....but the industry> being what it is....
everyone puts some huge halogens on it and exclaims...miracle.
morel sounds like he's going through the motions here
and i've found him to be often intriguing if not downright gutsy.
the girls do well but are never pushed....even some vocal-effect to
magnify the edge could've done wonders in many places.
nicks sounds good and the song is good (well...a classic to be sure)
it's clean minimal interpetation has it's appeal but again even that could've and
should've been pushed.
oddly enough a song from the 70s is the best to be found on this 2006 album.
some of the songs are just plain bad.

i haven't checked disc 2 yet but that's not what this cd is about....
i don't think.
this is about deep dish offering up supposedly original music.
i saw them live last year where they managed to push much of their program into
a domain which i myself (having grown up with iggy and the stooges and
blue cheer and bowie gabriel every form of pop punk disco and electronic
music imagineable)
experienced as extremely edgy....their set was as sonically aggressive
as anything i've ever encountered (great lights too) perhaps even to the
point of hostile.
i won't say i didn't enjoy the show as i felt in many ways it served as a
metaphor for (or protest against) george bush and america's invasion and
continued assault on iraq.
perhaps a stretch on my part but these weren't happy times and deep dish
wan't about to deny it.

so for this album to show almost no fire...very little in the way of edge
outrage or
urgency.....i hate to say it but they actually sound scared.
perhaps my biggest complaint here has to do with their constant reliance
on these delicately limp acoustic guitar-sounds/samples to sweeten the equation
as if to cover for the fact that there's no material here.
at least a few sounds coming from some of the great devices available to
us....ya know?....a little guitar-ish w/a little cosmic twinkle twang
whhheeeeoooouoummmmmrrrr??!!
i will always love deep dish and this album is in
no way able to knock them off their well-deserved place in history...

for those of you who need to find out what works gained
them their place in electronic music's hall-of-fame.....
skip this and pick almost anything else of theirs.

As a great bonus for GU025: Toronto both Sharam and Dubfire released their own Afterclub mixes. The one reviewed here is Dubfire's.

I had a hard time trying to distinguish what made this an afterclub mix. The set overall has a little more energy than the sets mixed at afterclubs I've been to in the past. Regardless, this is a nice little bonus and was very much appreciated as a freebie. Worth buying on its own for those of you not lucky enough to get it as part of GU025: Toronto? I think so.

Overall 5/5 stars.

This is album is hard to classify because it starts off so soft. By track 7, it is booming with trance. It is definitely my favorite Deep Dish album thus far, after purchasing George Is On, mainly because of Dreams. Recommended is Toronto #025, but only the second disc is great.

My favorate of the Deep Dish albums, easily the best of the Global Underground 25 Toronto set!

I couldn't beleive it when I first heard this CD. For about 5 years now, I've followed DD around the Eastern Seaboard, and Europe, most recently in Dubai. I was very disappointed in the GU toronto CD, because it sounded nothing like what they are like live, or at least what they used to be. As a big fan of Yoshiesque 1 and 2, In House We Trust 1 and 2, and Penetrate Deeper, I can safely say that Ali has gone back to the groovier, funkier DD sets; back to his deeper, sexier, hat frenzied style that he has always been known for. I am very happy with this compilation, and I think its about time to go back to this sound, since they did it best.

It is rare that I pick up a prog. house CD and LOVE it from the first listen. These artists are so crafty at what they do, that it sometimes takes a few listens to able to digest completely what they are doing. I'v had the pleasure of seeing this duo perform live several times at Club Space in Miami....Huge Deep Dish fan and I think they are paving the way (along with Steve Lawler) as to where music is going. This mix is as sexy and flawless as anyting you'll hear from them. And it keeps getting better with each listen. If you're a Deep Dish fan, do yourself a favor and pick this up..It wont disappoint. Has a good pace and never dies out. So many DJ's today make the mistake of building it up and up until the peak, then die out from there. The rest of the mix is a throaway. THIS IS NOT THE CASE HERE. Eevery track works together perfect and the flow is seamless. I do agree that I wasnt too thrilled either with the Timo Maas track, but the rest of the set outshines that minor blunder.....Stop reading and GET THIS NOW!!!

We know these GU albums are not mixed live..GU never claimed that. These albums are a "peek" into the artists time in that city. And contrary to what some may think, they are mixed by the DJ or DJ's themselves in a studio with all the bells and whistles. How else are you gonna get that sound quality. Read the sleeve notes. That does not take away from the fact that these are great mixes....

This is an interesting remix/remake of the track "He's a Dream" from the original soundtrack to Flashdance. The female vocals sound like they may have been rerecorded and not the original artist, but the instrumental sample sounds like it's from the original track. Either way, it has a variety of hot mixes, slower tempo than most house music. Definitely a must have for fans of the sountrack, and this song in particular.

It is clearly evident for fans of the label giants, Renaissance and Global Underground that both try hard to be fresh in track selection in relation to the other (for the most part). They generally use the same world-class DJ's and each have their unique subseries titles.

More often than not, I feel the consumer gets a little more bang for their buck with Renaissance titles. At least when it comes to diversity within a multiple disc set.

The same holds true with this compilation. Two discs that are so completely different, I had to initially convince myself that the duo Deep Dish mixed them both.

Disc 1 still gets a lot of play time at my place. Wonderful and creative mix that would still hold up in most clubs or live venues today (well, maybe that's a overstatement). This one takes you on a great journey courtesy D.C.'s most infamous DJ's. A few tacky vocal tracks prevent this set from being truely timeless and truely great.

Time has been fairly merciless to disc 2. There are quite a few clubbers' classic on this one, but overall it sounds very outdated when played today.

If you've had the pleasure of hearing these guys mix live as a pair (and enjoy their sets as a duo) then you won't be disappointed with disc 1. By now, you probably have over a dozen albums featuring at least half the tracks on disc 2.

Disc 1 gets 4/5 stars and Disc 2 gets 3/5 stars.

I have Renaissance 1 by Sasha and Digweed, and Renaissance 2 by Digweed alone. They are just incomparably good and nothing will ever come close to matching them. But I found this mix really worth listening to. Looking forward to Deep Dish in Hong Kong in two weeks' time.

Deep Dish really aren't about trance (although this CD is more trance-y than Yoshiesque) - and this is a good thing. How many continuously mixed trance CDs does one need? Put down some moolah for this CD and you'll find a whole new fresh perspective on dance music.

There are some incredible peaks and breaks on this CD - highlights include the Hex Hector mixes of Everything But The Girl's Temperamental, Timo Mass' superb remix of Lustral's Everytime, and pounding yet hilarious Danny Tenglia mix of Green Velvet's Flash...

The mixing on this CD is fluid and smooth with plenty of tricks and treats for the listener to discover.

Grab this CD, Grab your headphones and enjoy the ride :-)

Not only is their later music much better, I take real issue with the lyrics to "Mohammad Is Jesus"; they don't conform to reality!

Proving that Deep Dish are no one-trick ponies, Dubfire and Sharam release their own album of original music, which features thumping house, mid-tempo grooves, and ambient touches. These Washington, D.C.-based DJs bring to the table much more than beats and rhythm; they compose well-structured melodies that carry these tracks. "Mohammed is Jesus," "The Future of the Future (with Everything but the Girl)" and "Susuhi" feature Deep Dish doing what they do best: thumping house with a disco twist. But they also serve up a really seductive ambient number in the title track, and the downtempo "My Only Sin" is downright infectious and hypnotic. This CD didn't compltetely grab me at first, but, as with all good CDs, it grows on you.

It's been out for a couple of years now but still cuts you open with it's unadultered originality and funkiness.

Junk Science has it all. Personally I'm not a great fan of Tracy Thorn (who sings on Future of the Future) but that is my only complaint on what is a seamless soundtrack to any film you could ever imagine.

Atmospheric, trancy and funky. Junk Science will open your mind to the quality and originality of Deep Dish. If you are more interested in a club-friendly set then get Yoshiesque, their killer double album. Can these chaps do no wrong?

Dubfire and Sharam create lovely, funky grooves that stretch out forever into confident, seductive soundscapes -- as evidenced by their extensive remix work for artists such as De'Lacy ("Hideaway" - a bona fide club smash), Kristine W ("Land Of The Living), and EBTG ("Wrong") who also collaborate on "The Future Of The Future (Stay Gold)" - the first single from "Junk Science". The other singles, "Stranded" and "Mohammed Is Jesus...", elevate club music to a higher plane.

The Deep Dish positive vibe is more laid back than the prog trance tendencies of early collaborator BT, though both artists have the same deft touch at creating expansive atmospheric dance music. Deep Dish achieves what Brian Eno's ambient experimentation did in the 70's: use technology to open up space and promote peace of mind and creativity. Deep Dish evolves those intentions for today's beat crazy audience. Definitely a "best of genre" cd! Outstanding track: "Chocolate City (love songs)". Ten and half minutes of sublime perfection.

This album is in one word COOL. However it is not consistent and sometimes a little bit dorky and thus the rating. Tracks 7 and 11 are my personal faves and serve as excellent driving music, especially with a sub. Worth checking out if you like their other work.

This is the best deep dish mix, no doubt, but not the best deep dish album. I would try Toronto 25 or dubfire toronto. It does have a cool mix of Moby's Porcelain, and hits such as Timo Maas, Sven Vath, Morel, Muse and BT's Dreaming. Pick it up for kicks or if you are looking for some mellow trance. It has a nice elogated version of Barberella. This cd takes patience to listen to.

Just discovered this CD and had to go see them spin. Im amazed well worth your time. They do not let you down at all...totally chill!

This album defined my musical listening taste for local groups. I originally bought this album as an import, sadly, my ex swiped it when we broke up. I am now purchasing this album for a second time, a strong testiment for my love of this album. this is well worth the money, anyone who loves Tiesto or Oakey, but likes a bit of a darker edge, try this album on for size and I guaruntee you will love it.

This has got to be the best cd they ever put out. Some may argue that the yoshiesque cd's are better, but I beg to differ. This is flawless stuff. It's hard edged, yet soothing. It's borderline trance, house, and progressive. It's funky, deep, and soulful. It caters to everyone. This is what Deep Dish USED to sound like. This cd should definetly be the first Deep Dish cd you buy. This is the MOST concise definition of Deep Dish. ENJOY!!

Deep Dish are one of my favorite DJs. They really have a sense for the classic tracks and mix these in liberally. When I first bought this disc I was somewhat disappointed. But as usual, good things happen to those who wait. After checking it out again recently, I now realize how deep these cuts are and how enjoyable they are to listen to. The first disc starts slowly and builds to EBTG Tempermental which is followed by the awesome Barbarella by Sven Vath. The disc continues to build nicely and with the beginning of Disc 2 with Timo Mass' Ubik (album version) I am now spinning out of control with my glow stick in hand waiting for the next track. Later Deep Dish take it to a trippy level with Green Velvet's "Flash" and the real kicker comes with BT's "Dreaming" which is truly splendid. Another disc using this same track is Renaissance Awakening with Dave Seaman (which is slightly better). Overall, Deep Dish delivers yet another solid progressive house set that borders on trance at times. Smoooth work Guys! Enjoy!!
