I'll be the first to concur with comments like "I love it," or "great mix of favorites." But "greatest soundtrack ever? That statement alone is purely subjective. This soundtrack even more. If there is one declaration that can be made without debate, it's that never has a movie depended more on it's soundtrack. The music and songs in this movie are vital to it's pulse. Though it's one of those movies that feels it's necessary to always have music running to some extent (the mark of a cheap feeling movie, mostly), it's quite necessary for this movie which lacks in writing. The music does a lot for the mood setting in this contrived, simplistic story, particularly in my opinion Carole King's closing ballad, "Anyone At All." Oh, I love this movie and own the DVD, and just got the soundtrack. But let's face it folks, this ain't Oscar material (for what THAT'S worth). This movie to me is one of those guilty pleasures. You know what you get going into it. And in that Nora Ephron (whose "Sleepless in Seattle" I detested) goes beyond the call, particularly at setting the mood of this movie, and the feel of the neighborhood where it largely takes place. Even if that does create a kind of Utopian version of New York City. And a large part of that is due to Ephron's choice of music. The flow of this movie is in the music. Even the most subtle of cuts- the 2-3 second Godfatheresque cut after Kinnear's response to Ryan's "You know what it means to go to the mattresses?", and the upbeat Godfather II-like piece that accompanies Ryan's shadow boxing behind the counter as she's (in her own way) preparing to fight for her store's life. But the music is great. Listening to the CD is visualizing the movie as you go about whatever you're doing. You can't listen to any cuts from this soundtrack and not picture the scene and dialogue. That's a good soundtrack. I'll always keep a copy of, oh, Black Sabbath's Greatest Hits right next to it in case any of my buddies happen by so I won't be ostracized. But when they're gone, I actually crank this.

Great songs for an even greater movie. As well as Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's performances, the artists included here really exceeded all expectations. Furthermore, I believe everybody should have a closer look at Sinead O'Connor's incredible performance in "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City": specially since the 9/11 terrorist attacks this song has become even more touching every time you hear it.

I love this soundtrack.Its upbeat and happy. Fun to listen to in my shop.

I'm not going to write a long review, because there are so many other reviews on here, but I am just here to agree that this is a great soundtrack! :)

This story to me is by far one of my favorites. It takes you off into a magical place in your mind. It is so well written that you actually place yourself into the story. The castles are my favorite. I too included castles in my book "Fallacious" and find them mesmerizing. This is a must see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a very beautiful soundtrack. My Friends and I love the movie, so we REALLY like the soundtrack. We listen to it every time they come to my house.
The Proposal is my favorite song.

I absolutely love this soundtrack. The songs are beautifully scored and it's just wonderful. I listen to it at work when I need to calm down. It reminds me of the movie. I can picture each scene in my head as the tracks play. I recommend this CD to anyone!

In all honesty, the Ever After soundtrack may be some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard. Although the music brings to mind the film it came from, this is certainly stand-alone music. My only complaint is the non-instrumental song at the end. The song simply does not match up with the Renaissance style music and really adds nothing to the overall CD. If you plan on using the music for a romantic dinner or background music, make sure to program your stereo to skip over it!

Beautifully conducted orchestra. If you live this type of music buy it. I am crazy collector of this kind of music....

Old review: While I was watching this series, I felt the music was all wrong. The music just did not fit well with the beautiful scenery. It could have been done better.

New Review: What I said above has changed. I now love the soundtrack. I only wish I could change my stars to 5! I have so many favorites on this CD. This is an addicting soundtrack, and series. Lesson learned? Don't let samples fool you. You have to experience the full thing. Have an open mind about music, which I do. I gave this music a second chance, and I ended up loving it. So glad I did. I recommend it if you're a fan of original scores, or a music lover in general. :o)

An amazing display of Earth. Extremely interesting, and a great musical score to accompany it, which I bought soon after.

I cant believe they left out the best song on the show, when the flowers are opening on the saguaro cactus in the deserts one and the same song plays in the rain forest when the tree falls to the ground and everything else starts to grow...someone find the name to that song please

When I saw this film in theaters, I knew I had to have the soundtrack, well that was back in 1999 and I just NOW go around to buying it!

This soundtrack has some of the best songs that I have ever heard. All the songs on this soundtrack are not excellent, but about half the songs are unbelievably good. They make the purchase well worth the money.

I have never seen the movie, but the soundtrack is beautiful. The first song is wonderful. The rest is great to listen to for a calming afternoon.

When I love a movie, I usually fell in love with its music and I can't decide that whether the music made me like the movie or the movie made me like the music. "Anna and the King" enchanted me already when I first heard about it and I was eager to watch it. A man and a woman, from two worlds so different, yet they love each other - it sounded so sad and beautiful to me (maybe I am too romantic, but that isn't a big fault, I hope). Since then I learned that the story of the handsome Siamese king and the English governess didn't happen in real life, and that disappointed me a bit, but I still love this movie.

The song "How Can I Not Love You", composed by George Fenton and performed by Joy Enriquez, is a sad one about the two who mustn't love each other, yet they do. Director Andy Tennant describes it with his own words: "His (George Fenton's) love theme isn't really a love theme at all... but rather a "loss" theme. George writes music that speaks to the tragedy of the images rather than the drama, and in that single decision lies utter genius." All the tracks are in mysterious East-style, so they give us a glimpse into that far-away world.

I'd say that it was great and i loved it.

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

I have been listening to great scores for many years and this collection is truly inspirational in so far as the choice of different scores takes you on a journey of listening pleasure matched by only a few collections.The price is incredibly reasonable for hours of listening pleasure. Don't pass this one up

While this isn't a "bad" CD, I wish that I hadn't bought it and instead had saved my money. I listened to it once and will never listen to it again. I recommend you buy this ONLY if you are a HUGE fan of the movie. This CD didn't bring back any fond memories of the movie, and I did like the movie a lot.

The score from "Shadowlands" is the most touching and beautiful that I have ever heard. It's wonderful from begining to end. I was determined to purchase the soundtrack as soon as I saw the film. Sadly, I did not see the film until years after it was made and the soundtrack was already out of print. But I keep hoping I'll find it somewhere.

This is the best soundtrack I have ever been moved to purchase. The themes are incredibly beautiful and emotionally stirring. I've owned it for years, and never grow tired of hearing it. It is just as moving every time I listen. I believe this is George Fenton's finest work.

The film Shadowlands is my favorite love story, particularly because, like real life, this little story is messy. Everything doesn't work out fine in the end.

While watching the film, Fenton's music is a perfect complement to the heart wrenching narritive. Only when listening to the soundtrack on its own do you realize how much the music was a part of the emotion. This music grips you and carries your emotions back to those you felt during the film.

This soundtrack is one of my favorites. The melody is hauntingly beautiful and is introduced in various ways throughout the CD. I have played this CD many, many times and never tire of hearing it. I also loved the movie.

This is a very good movie especially if you like musicals. Although my husband is not a huge fan of muscials and he thought it was very good. Great acting, great music and the story line is good. Liked it so much I ordered the cd for the music!

As wonderful as the film, with great original music which brings favorite scenes back to mind.

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

I found myself putting the movie on while doing something else just to hear the soundtrack. So I bought the CD. If you like lazy island riffs than you'll like this. Same music that's in the movie....

The soundtrack is like the movie: sweet, fun, uplifting, surprises around every corner, and worth enjoying many times. My older relatives adore it, and even still, I love it too, though most of the music is from an era other than my own, that is a testament to it's timelessness. I only regret the songs in the movie that were not included on the soundtrack, especially Never Smile at a Crocodile, sung by the Paulette Sisters. What a fun song right up there with the Puppy Song -- fresh, one I now sing to my children. So what if not every song is written with a homogenous audience in mind! This soundtrack is delightful!

New Orleans Jazz, 20's Jazz. When I was listening to this music along with my wife, we were expecting Randy Newman to cut in and start singing. It's not bad, but not our cup of tea. My favourite Fenton scores are Memphis Belle and Shadowlands. I love that English Classical Style.

This CD is the filler music from the film. The background compositions the editor uses for transitions without dialog and occasionally under dialog. The absence of such music is what distinguishes an "English Movie" for people my age. It's pleasant music, and occasionally lively as befits the film, but not worth the trouble to buy as a separate CD.

The CD "You've Got Mail" (as opposed to "M@il" in this title) provides the eclectic mix of vocals from several performers that complement the actors' performances so well in this movie. Get that one, skip this one -- and watch the movie again to see if you can spot when these cuts are edited in behind the action. That's the best way to listen to them.

The music in this album is wonderful. George Fenton brilliantly turns Kathleen Kelly's and Joe Fox's words and actions into music. When listening to the score you will easily picture the movie in your mind. The only downfall of this album is, it is way too short - just over 30min. Someone should have put both of the You've Got Mail soundtracks together on one album for a complete YGM experience. However, this light soundtrack is a must have for any collection.

George Fenton does well here. Reading the CD booklet you understand the research and thought he put into this score, using period instruments (viols and sackbuts).

But it is perhaps unfortunate that the score is little bland in my headphones. Allow me to explain. Most tracks serve merely to accentuate and emphasize certain scenes. Notice the deep base strike when Elizabeth lies for her husband in "The Interrogation of Elizabeth" track. When she says no, the base strikes. Just one example. And for another, moments later when Abigail pretends to see a "yellow bird" the orchestra vigorously strikes to create suspense and shock.

But these moments, while obvious action cues, are actually quite effective if you have a passion for the story and you realize the important moments accompany the score here and there. But other tracks such as "Reverand Hale" and "The Village Meeting" just drag on in quiet underscore. Rather boring, because you can't quite pinpoint where the movie is and you can't quite recall certain classic lines being spoken here. Just bland underscore in certain tracks.

HOWEVER,

The strongest tracks are heartwrenching. "The Beach" and "Proctor Confesses" and "The Crucible End Titles (Forgive Us)". These tracks are SOOOOO sad. "The Beach" creates the tragically sweet reconciliation of Elizabeth and John. And we see the paper being ripped and the three innocent souls approach the scaffold in "Proctor Confesses" The last track serves as a strong excersise in thematic writing. The motif clearly portrays the tragic ending and tugs at my heart. These three are the strongest tracks and if you have any love for the story, the play, the movie, they are worth the entire CD alone. At least for me. I share a strong partnership and experience with this story.

My high school theatre department has worked diligently for three months in creating this story. And Fenton's music has been used througout to create and accentuate acting and emotion.

I love this story and the last three tracks capture it, in my opinion. Hauntingly Beautiful.

The score in and of itself is very unique in that it blends the rythem of the time (1692 Salem, Mass.) and the feel of the culture into one pot. Its a very acceptional score and Fenton's work fits the film amazingly! If you like period scores this is a must buy as it will remind much of 17th century New England with a little bit of an erie side to it. I give it a thumbs up as it is a well composed score and AN EVEN MORE AWESOME PLAY/MOVIE! Check that out too. Peace.
