Horace Andy

WOW!!! If you are the least bit spiritual then you will fall right into this CD with no problems at all, and if you are not, you will before you finish listening to this. The music spans the globe reflecting how other cultures express their spirituality and touches something way deep down inside and makes you think much deeper than the surface of things. It is the companion to the DVD and I can't imagine having one without the other.I play this CD contantly and it always brings me a sense of calm, and happiness yet with a touch of sadness, only because I wish everyone could listen and have a similar experience. If everyone listened to this music, I think our world would be a better place. Yes, simple as that.

This is a beautiful cd. The combination of sounds in the songs, the combination of cultures is very well done. Even the spoken intros are interesting. I first borrowed this cd from the library and fell for it immediately. I didn't want to return it. Anything that combine Indian, Reggae, Rap, Africa and more...that, that is a wonderful thing..

Artists Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman collaborated in 2002 on this concept album to rousing success. Working under the theme of "Unity Through Diversity," the Brit-based duo travelled across the world gathering video, sound, and guest artists in an attempt to create a wholistic creative vision. The end product is a stunning achievement, a combination of loamy spirituality, untarnished deep earth culturalism, and the sprig and sap of full-bloom electronica.

You may remember "My Culture," a hip-hop-n-dream-pop number featuring Robbie Williams and Maxi Jazz. One of the album's first singles, it got a lot of play in 2002-3, and its short form music video was nominated for a Grammy. Rightfully so, as the song is reminiscent of what makes the entire rest of the album so wonderful -- uncannily unique rhythms tied to lyricism and tones that strike chords at the cellular level.

Not a hard thing to do when you dipping your ladle into the slow-moving streams of tribal music, unsullied Indian chants, and the traditional prayer-songs of people with more than a little of their life tied inextricably to the past that made them. Songs like "Ma' Africa," "Passion," and "Braided Hair" postively glow with the energy and emotion behind the words. Others, like "The Way You Dream" and "Daphne" and "All Alone" float dreamily through their own notes, aloft on the not-so-hidden hope of the record's message.

Some might find it heavy-handed or cliched (the DVD runs a bit long), but there's really no denying that the music is, in fact, beautiful. Assisted musically (and with some vocal contributions by) people such as Brian Eno, Michael Franti, Michael Stipe, Kurt Vonnegut, Dennis Hopper, Baaba Maal and others, the record does court themes that may seem old news, but I'd argue that just because a message is old doesn't make it any less true, doesn't deprive of it of any of the power and honesty that compelled it when it was fresh and alive. Although this album is over five years old by now, and although the spirit that prompted it is even older, "fresh" and "alive" are still perfect words to describe every song in it.

The DVD alone is worth the price. However, the album is not that great

I love this album, I listen to indie rock usually and I cannot get enough of this CD. I have had it for over a year and I still can't get enough! Great for smoking and driving! There is just something so chill and yet beautiful in the words "money, money, money, money, is the root of all evil" Check it out! You will only want more!

This CD is one of 3 samplers from the Blood & Fire label. A great collage of artists and masterpieces of music mixed together to form this lp. With Tappa Zukie, King Tubby, Burning Spear and many others, you will not be disappointed. Its filled with the creme de la creme of heavy sounds of the reggae era, the "golden" age of reggae. Its a must have!!

This LP is hot fire.



In the light/dub the light is my favorite reggae album, right up there with dubwise and otherwise, but I've always wanted something else on fire from Horace Andy--the best voice in reggae.



This isn't quite In the light, but this is still amazing.



You might want to look elsewhere though for a, shall we say, more competitive pricing structure. Maybe on that apple music selling platform ;)



DISCLAIMER: If you're looking for Dancehall crap like Shaggy, this ain't it. This is the smoothest voice in reggae on extended dance mix versions...that really just means dope long reggae jams.

It was hard to find these tracks till now. Great stuff and good reproduction quality (listen to the samples). I would get this while they still press it.

All of the tracks on this album are worth some dedicated listening, but that's true of most all Bullwackie productions. The real reason why you should buy ths album is to hear the Wayne Jarrett songs. There aren't many opportunities to find his music on CD. The track "You and I" is worth the price of the album alone. No other singer has a comparable style.

The Horace Andy and Naggo Morris tracks are solid, too. A very good collection.

This Cd is Horace's first release of new material in a decade. Sometimes when "old school" reggae artists try to make a comback in the present time it comes out cheesy nothing like their old material.This is not the case. While this is not his best work it still sounds nice. There are a couple of vintage Horace Andy songs on here. If your a fan dont be hesistant to pick up this excellent Cd.

I gotta tell ya, I'm not much of a fan of reggae. I do only admire 2 artists of the genre: Bob Marley and this man, Horace Andy. He is a wonder! I don't dance well w/ reggae. I dance better with techno/electronica. LIVING IN THE FLOOD suddenly got me dancing the reggae beat with every track. I was surprised. I never knew much of Horace Andy until I 1st heard him doing guest work on Massive Attack's last 3 CDS. You gotta hear him on the very haunting "Man Next Door" from Massive Attack's '98 masterpiece, MEZZANINE. He just grew on me. I had to buy his new CD, his 1st in 10 yrs. I'm glad I did. There are 14 tracks here. However I think he added a hidden track after song #14. That mystery track is worth it. Song 14, a remix of "After All" is very nicely done by Mad Professor. A tiny problem: there's no lyric book here which is unfortunate. Reading/singing the lyrics are a true necessity. Still a fantastic CD by the legendary Horace Andy. GREAT JOB.

2 lp's on 1 cd. The 1st is the great In The Light vocal album. The 2nd is the stupid-rare dub version. The dubs by Prince Jammy are worth way more than the price of this set alone.
Another fantastic value from one of the best reissue labels out there.

While I don't don this CD as the "best" of Horace Andy, it offers a variety of Andy's style and charisma. I found many of the rhythms to be a bit bland, while some of the stand out cuts, are Government Land, Leave Rasta, and Rome. The Dubs are cut nicely, but it is obvious Tubby is not on the controls. Jammy does a good job, but leaves me still wanting more from the dub side.
In The Light is listenable and an essential album to have, but Horace Andy has many more essential tunes that I think could have covered this album better.

Blood and Fire has been re-issuing old essential reggae music on CD for quite some time now. They did good releasing this album as well. Actually, this CD is a combination of two albums, the vocals and the dubs for Horace Andy's In the Light. Both albums are equally essential. Horace's beautifull voice is known from his works with the Trip Hop group Massive Attack. On this CD you can hear where he is coming from: Horace Andy singing over classical roots reggae. Especially because every song gets accompanied by it's dub version, I think you will enjoy each and every one of these tracks. Real gems are "Government Land", "Leave Rasta" and "Rome".

As much as this album is Horace Andy, it is Prince Jammy as well. The dubs from In The Light are mixed by the Great Prince (now: King) Jammy, King Tubby's protegee. You can hear Tubby's pupil just before he started to have his own label. Killer dubs that certainly belongs in every dub-collector who takes him or herself serious. Jammy remixes the vocals of In the Light in such a manner, that they are absolutely different than the vocals. You can play these versions apart from the vocals, and they will stay interesting, also if you're not such a big dubhead like me.

Needless to say, as it is with every Blood and Fire release, this CD comes with very nice artwork and a lot of information written by Steve Barrow, who can be considered a living reggae encyclopedia.

This is just one of those reggae albums that incorporates all of the elements that make reggae such a great form of music: Solid riddims, sweet vocals, catchy hooks, and wicked dub versions. This album is as close to perfect as you can get.
