this is a great set of true roots tunes. with the exception of one song (mr taxman), which has electronic effects and heavier drums, the tracks are solid and the musicianship creative. some recordings featuring session musicians in this time frame can get repetetive and lack a certain soul but this is not the case with UNCOnQUERED PEOPLE. harmonies are good. as is the case with THE SAME SONG these tracks are slow with a deep long skank. the sound is more polished than THe Same SONG recordings but rough enough to hold its own amongst the heavy roots of the early 70's such as burning spear's MAN IN THE HILLS which is highly recommended.

"UNCONQUERED PEOPLE" IS ISRAEL VIBRATION'S SECOND ALBUM. MANY PEOPLE FEEL THAT THEIR STRONGEST WORK IS "THE SAME SONG," BUT I BEG TO DIFFER. EVEN THOUGH "THE SAME SONG" IS PERHAPS THEIR BEST KNOWN CLASSIC, DON'T IGNORE "UNCONQUERED PEOPLE." THIS ALBUM IS ALSO A CLASSIC. FROM START TO FINISH, THIS ALBUM WILL LEAVE YOUR EARS COMFORTED. BOB MARLEY WAS SAID TO BE PRESENT DURING THE SESSIONS OF THIS ALBUM, FOR THE ALBUM WAS RECORDED AT BOB MARLEY'S TUFF GONG STUDIOS. THE ABSOLUTE STAND OUTS ARE "MR. TAXMAN" WHICH IS SURE TO HAVE YOU DANCING, "SURVIVE" WITH THE JAZZY PIANO AND SAX DUO, "TOP CONTROL" WHICH IS ALSO SURE TO HAVE YOU DANCING, AND "WE A DE RASTA" WHICH REMINDS US ALL THAT WE ARE PROTECTED BY THE MASTER. IF YOU ARE JUST GETTING INTO ISRAEL VIBRATION, THIS WOULD BE A GREAT PLACE TO START. THIS IS ONE OF THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST ALBUMS!!

Backed by the legendary Wailers band, Israel Vibration's second release boasts the best songwriting of the group's career. Furthermore, ALL the singers are in great voice here, particularly Skelly, which is a welcome surprise to those who are more familiar with his weaker singing on later releases. Add the rock solid musicianship of the Wailers band, and you get the best of all Isreal Vibration's albums. It eclipses even their critically acclaimed first album, "The Same Song", (which sounds much more raw by comparison.

If you are a fan of roots reggae music, you will not be disappointed by Unconquered People. It delivers. Big time.

Dis is the most played CD in my CD collection (it is a very small collection, but powerful) I LOVE Israel Vibration, and dis is the best CD to me.

You can't go wrong with any IV recording. I pretty much have all of 'em. This is up there with Same Song and Strength. Another great addition to any collection.

"WHY YOU SO CRAVEN" IS ISRAEL VIBRATION'S THIRD RELEASE. IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ALBUM, YOU WOULD REALIZE THAT THEY DON'T DO THE BACKGROUND VOCALS ON EVERY SONG. THAT IS BECAUSE THEY NEVER GOT TO FINISH THE ALBUM. PERSONAL ISSUES WITHIN THE GROUP CAUSED THEM TO WALK OUT OF THE STUDIO SESSIONS. IT IS SAID THAT THE TAMLINS CAME IN AND COMPLETED THE BACKGROUND VOCALS. DESPITE THIS INCIDENT, THIS ALBUM STILL RANKS AMONG THEIR CLASSICS. EVERY SONG IS SURE TO GET YOUR ATTENTION, BUT THE ABSOLUTE STANDOUTS ARE "UNIVERSAL FATHER", WHICH OPENS THE ALBUM IN A POSITIVE WAY, "JAH IS THE WAY", THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFULLY SOLID. THERE ARE NO BACKGROUND VOCALS ON THIS ONE, BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER. THE SONG IS GREAT. ANOTHER STANDOUT IS "HIGHWAY ROBBERY." THE OTHER SONGS ARE GREAT ALSO. THIS ALBUM WAS ORIGINALLY RECORDED IN THE EARLY 1980'S, BUT WAS LATER REISSUED BY RAS RECORDS IN 1991. THERE REALLY ISN'T MUCH MORE TO SAY, SINCE ISRAEL VIBRATION IS SO CONSISTENT WITH THEIR MUSIC. SO, IF YOU LOVE ISRAEL VIBRATION, OR JUST STRICTLY ROOTS REGGAE, THEN THIS ALBUM IS SURE TO SATISFY YOU. OF COURSE, I SAY THAT ABOUT ALL ISRAEL VIBRATION ALBUMS BECAUSE IT IS THE TRUTH.

Israel Vibration was originally a Jamaican vocal trio, just like there are many more: Culture, Black Uhuru, Abyssinians, to name but three. The vibes have a very original sound, and unlike many other trio's, each of the members are perfectly able to sing lead and backing vocals. They have released many, many albums, under which "Why You So Craven"
This album has not received the credits that it should have, in my opinnion. The fact that it is produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes has certainly contributed to this stance. Junjo has produced nomerous earlier dancehall music, just remember Barrington Levy, the Scientist Greensleeves series and so on. This rub a dub touch maybe didn't fall good in the ears of some critics, but I can't really tell you why, because Craven certainly belongs to Israel Vibration's top albums.

The basslines and the bass drums are perfectly mixed, the voices from the vibes on top of it, and most of the tracks contain special spiritual lyrics that will move many to tears and give them power and strength to continue living in a Babylon. Tracks like Universal Father, Jah is the Way and Jah Solid Rock are true gems and I can't see how these tracks wouldn't cater to roots fans and conscious dreadlocks.

I mentioned earlier the works of Junjo Lawes. Please don't think, that this album is not roots reggae, because it is. It is roots reggae that is easily accesable, the grooves are nice and sweet so it will move your dancing feet. The instrumentation is impressive, and despite of many musicians, the music isn't complicated.

I love roots reggae; Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, and the hidden gem Israel Vibration. What an amazing amazing group with an amazing sound...

This album is second only to Unconquered People, which is probably my favorite reggae album ever...I highly recommend it. Great tight roots reggae. I also highly recommend the 'Reggae in Holyland' DVD which follow Israel Vibration on their tour through Israel; great performances and interviews...

Israel Vibration consistently provides its audience with exceptional music and "Why You So Craven" is just another addition to an amazing output of quality reggae. Songs like "Highway Robbery" and "What's The Use" showcase the group's unique falsetto harmonies with upbeat musical accompaniment. Other selections like "Jah Is The Way," and "On Jah Solid Rock" provide listeners with genuine lyrical praises and thanks directed to the Rastafari faith to which the three members are devout. This album parallels the quality of previous releases like "Unconquered People" and is a must-have for serious reggae fans who desire a hypnotic, roots-oriented sound. With music provided by the Hi Times Band, "Why You So Craven" is an album that reaches deep down inside with its genuine quality to touch those that will open up their ears and their hearts to listen.

Israel Vibration have been around since the late 70's, arguably the height of roots reggae. Stamina seems an approprate title for their latest release since they have been around for so long. This is roots reggae at its finest. There is no doubt that these guys are Jamaican, unlike so mant new "reggae" bands who are as much hip-hop as anything. The music of Israel Vibration is firmly rooted in the music of Jamdong and if one is familiar with mento, Jamaican folk, one can hear its influence clearly.
For fans of traditional, deep roots reggae, this cd is a must have. There is nothing new here but in this case, that is a good thing. Great vocal harmonies backed by a phenominal rocking band who actually play their instruments rather than use samples. No McMusic here, thank Jah!
There are too few bands with the dedication and integrity of Israel Vibration. In a sea of mass produced, corporate garbage encompassing, sadly, all genres, Israel Vibration are an island,like Jamaica, of beauty and the ability of the sufferers to triumph.

It has been a couple of years since IV put out a new studio album.
When I listen to it for the first time, it was a recognizable sound, as I expected. The music and harmony are uplifting. Most of the tracks are recorded in the Tuff Gong studio with some of the best instrument players. Especially the songs peformed by Wiss are very strong.
Unfortunately I really must get used to some of Skelly's songs this time.
Tracks like Cleaniness and Free Loafter are covered with a kind of modern dancehall/disco sauce. I think you must like it or not, but I don't.
On the other hand it is renewing.
On the last track, Sautez Reggae, Wiss and Skelly are doing lead vocals together, they haven't done that before and it's fun to hear.
So overal this is a very solid album and still worth the buy.

THIS IS ISRAEL VIBRATION'S THIRD STUDIO ALBUM SINCE THE DEPARTURE OF ALBERT "APPLE" CRAIG. THIS IS YET ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM BY THEM. REMAINING CONSISTENT WITH THEIR ROOTS STYLE AND SMOOTH HARMONIES, THEY HIT YOU WITH GREAT TRACKS LIKE "UNSEEN BULLET," WITH IT'S NYAHBINGHI STYLE RHYTHM, "LEVEL EVERY ANGLE", "JAH RUNNINGS," WITH ITS SKA RHYTHM, AND "SODOM AND GOMARRAH," THOUGH EVERY TRACK IS WORTH A LISTEN. THERE IS NO NEED TO SKIP ANY TRACKS ON THIS ALBUM. PICK UP "FIGHTING SOLDIERS", IT'S SURE TO SATISFY JUST LIKE THE REST OF ISRAEL VIBRATION'S RELEASES.

There is nothing new under the sun, but the fans of IV dont mind at all, I think. The sound is as always very solid and classic. In my opinion this album isn't their best but it's definitely worth buying. If you like the 'Free to move'album you will like this one as well.

This is a live recording of Israel Vibration during their French tour in February of last year. Like all of their other recordings, this album serves up some quality roots reggae, starting off with the Roots Radics and ROCKFORT ROCK, a song that immediately puts you into a Rasta groove. This would be a 5 star album if it wasn't for the inconsiderate editing of the concert. It's pretty obvious that the concert was cut up into pieces, as the track listing constantly jumps from Skelly to Skelly to Skelly, and then to Wiss. Otherwise, this recording is excellent. Here, Israel Vibration provides you with some of their classic tunes, like COOL AND CALM, VULTURES, WHY WORRY, and THE SAME SONG. Newer tunes can also be heard on this album, like the jumpy JAMMIN and LEVEL EVERY ANGLE, which sends a positive message through the pumping bass line, lead guitar, and horns. This is a great live album, but if you have never seen or heard Israel Vibration live, this would not be a great place to start. In my opinion, this album does not capture the full magic of an Israel Vibration concert. If you want to capture the full magic of an Israel Vibration concert, I would recommend "Live Again" and/or "Vibes Alive."

backed by the heaviest crew in jamaica (the roots radics), IV just keeps going and going and going. spreading the word of jah rastafari, these guys are amazing and this set is an essential chronicle of their recent "fighting soldiers" tour. with a nice mix of classics and newer material, the sixteen tracks rock hard for 72+ minutes. and, as usual from RAS, the sound quality is excellent. support live music and be sure to catch 'em when they're on the road. peace!

add this one to the list of spectacular live reggae shows caught on cd. and you thought they were getting old. backed by the industry-standard roots radics band, izzy vibes delivers hit after hit; old favorites like the seat-of-your pants intro rockford rock, same song, vultures, red eyes, cool and calm, ball of fire, and why worry, and also a few newer tunes like get up and go, african unification, jah runnings, and some a holler some a bawl. and the crowd's "we want more" reaction to every note they play makes you feel like youre right there; the energy is at maximum irieness. even people who dont care for reggae will dig this. i promise.

...and still my favorite. I remember purchasing it when it first came out, never having heard a note of it. I was a devoted roots lover, and somehow knew the album wouldn't disappoint. It didn't. I savored every simple drop. Over and over and over.

Don't get me wrong: I love their other work. The dub is pure love, and I-Vibe is never to be missed live. It's an unbeatable experience. But soulful, heartical songs like "Don't Want Apartheid" and "Strength of My Life" sealed my devotion to this album.

IV always is great for me. They may borrow a bit lyric-wise from Bob but they are always irie and always make me smile. These guys have been making records since they met in a polio rehab and had first success with Same Song which is also a must have. They are really great though and their vibes are always positive and their music is mellow and they have interestingly haunting voices. While some of their lyrics are reminisant of Bob, they bring an originality that is new and fresh, and a sound that is different than other Jamaican groups. I enjoy this album a lot.

I love reggae, and I think this is one of my favorite albums of all time. It gets you in the island mood. I am giving this to my friends as a present, it's that crucial!
I cannot believe anyone could say anything negative about Strength of My Life. It is uplifting, spiritual, and every song is good.

80's synth reggae people. There are only two albums worth buying by IV.

Same Song and Unconquered People

Save your money and don't allow yourselves to be convinced that this music is the real roots. Peace!

"Strength of My Life" brings Israel Vibration to Ras Records on a very strong note. After their break-up in the 1980's, the three members tried to approach solo careers. Only Wiss made progress, with the rare "Mr. Sunshine" album. In 1988, "Strength of My Life" was recorded by the reunited Israel Vibration members. Every track on this album is worth a listen, but one of the standouts is COOL AND CALM. COOL AND CALM is indeed cool and calm, but at the same time possesses energy through the horns, which echo at certain points in the song. Another standout track is DON'T WANT ARARTHEID. If you have never heard pure roots and culture, listen to that track and you will experience pure roots and culture, as the track has a typical reggae beat, with Nyahbinghi drums, and a driving bass line. GREEDY DOG, LIVE AND GIVE, PERFECT LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING, and MIDDLE EAST are also strong tracks, as each of them serve up positive messages and vibes under driving reggae rythms. If you've never heard Israel Vibration, this would be a perfect place to start, as this album offers a lot of their well-known songs. "Strength of My Life" is indeed a great effort by Israel Vibration.

Israel Vibration - Ray Charles has nothing on these guys. Cecil "Skelly" Spence, Lascelle "Wiss" Bulgin and Albert "Apple" Craig were destined to be reggae stars; all three have polio.
They met each other when they were children living at the Mona Rehabilitation Center in Jamaica; they were brought there to receive the medical care and support their families could not provide for them. A common interest in music and a belief that each of them was destined to become music stars brought them together. While living at the center, they met a Rastafarian who taught them about the Rastafarian belief; the trio quickly embraced the Rasta way and they never looked back. The only drawback was that the center did not endorse Rastafarianism and the look that goes with it; the "natty" dreads that soon grew on the heads of Skelly, Wiss and Apple were not endorsed by the center's administrators and the three were kicked out to the street. Skelly, Wiss and Apple went their separate ways but fate brought them back together. For the next six years they lived on the streets and literally sang for their food. They were noticed by a member of a Rastafarian splinter group, The Twelve Tribes of Israel, and were fronted the money to record some singles; the CS&N of reggae - Israel Vibration - was born! The singles they recorded were a hit and the boys found themselves opening for Bob Marley! The inspiring sight of the lads jamming and grooving on their crutches and braces got the audiences dancing and their music got the people demanding more!
In 1978 they were sent into the studio to record their full-length album debut "The Same Song". The trio had an incredibly talented group of musicians laying down the grooves for them: Sly Dunbar (drums), Robbie Shakespear (bass), Augustus Pablo (piano), Mikey Chung (guitar), & Ansel Collins (organ). The music was mixed low in order to highlight the interlocking vocal harmonies of Skelly, Wiss and Apple and to allow their message of unity and Jah to ring clear. The music is straight up roots style reggae - chugging guitar, steady-backwards beat and the occasional horn section for added atmosphere. All three vocalists are given equal time to shine; each person sings lead on the songs they wrote. Skelly's vocals are in the middle register, sounding comparable to Bob Marley; Wiss has a very smooth voice that softly floats and lands on the listeners ears; Apple has the most distinctive and original vocal phrasing; he has a herky-jerky, staccato, rhythmic style in which he stretches out and pulsates words and syllables creating a hypnotic and totally original sound. While each song's author sings lead vocal, the other two provide symmetric backing vocals, the end result is a Temptations/Four Tops/CS&N vocal uniformity, reggae-style - right yah! There are no pop, AOR songs here; just straight-up praise Jah, love and stay positive.
Skelly, Wiss and Apple may have a crippling disease but their music and message is full of power. There is no posing here; Israel Vibration is reggae to the bone! Tell the people about the message Apple: "Culture music open people eyes and them don't want that, cause when people eyes open and people get wise, then people put up more resistance. When them get wise and them eyes open to things, them become closer to each other. And when people unite, that's the greatest force right there."
Israel Vibration - totally original with the muscle and energy to heal the world; tune to their vibration - it's righteous yah!

I bought this after getting the very popular 'Same Song' stuck in my head. The rest of the album only gets better.

These 3 Rastafarians (which I learned is a concept somewhere between a lifestyle and a religion) create true, comforting, positive and beautiful harmonies.

True because the lyrics are about their subject of interest: Rastafarianism, Jah, a highly regarded King of Ethiopia, and general peace and justice. That may sound like some boring subjects initially but they seem to really mean their words. They don't speak them just because they're popular to sing about. And if you learn about the background of these subjects in relation to Israel Vibration it will make it more meaningful. It isn't a requirement that the listener understand the subject. As with nearly all music, you can fit your own ideas over their lyrics.

Comforting, Positive because the lyrics are also hopeful, positive and poetic. I can relate because it feels like they really mean the peace/love of humankind/jah things they say. And you don't have to be rastafarian or any particular religion to agree with their positive message.

For me the beautiful harmonies help to drive the message home. As if they are really divinely inspired to create their music. I get the same feeling as when listening to Marvin Gaye's "What's Happening Brother". I think soulful is an appropriate adverb.
My favorite right now is "Ball of Fire". This song moves in a slow, gentle rhythm that glides perfectly along with the "ball of fire" chorus.

The other album I have heard is Unconquered People. That is a good reggae album but doesn't have as much of the rich and slow harmonies like Same Song.

i am a huge fan of IV, and this album is their best in my opinion. i first heard them on a local reggae show and i was hooked instantly. this album is so soothing and beautiful, it's too bad all music isn't like this.

after all, most of the albums, especially the earlier ones, by israel vibration are pretty good. i do believe that the group is better when it consists of all three members. the group's talent for writing and singing shines throughout the album. my fav. songs are: the same song, why worry, lift up your conscience, and licks and kicks. actually, i like all of the songs here but these simply stick out for various reasons.
i also recommend why you so craven, strenght of my life, on the rock, and pay the piper (the last album features only two of the orignal members of the group).

This is perhaps one of the best albums from this very talented group. If you want to hear what Izzy Vibes sounds like in the flesh this album does them massive justice.

Ive heard all IsVibes CDs and they're all great, but this one I think tops the cake. This CD is all the way through the best CD they have out. It sounds great for being a live version and in any system would sound clear. If you like any other IsVibe CD, buy this one.

"On the Rock" is Israel Vibration's 1995 studio album, and it does not fail to satisfy. From MR. CONSULAR MAN to ON THE ROCK, the vibes offer non stop roots and culture music, even though tracks like SUGAR ME and LOVE IS ALL WE NEED offer softer sides to the group. The standouts on this album are MR. CONSULAR MAN, with Wiss offering a personal perspective in his lyrics over a crucial reggae rythm. The song starts off the album in perfect fashion. The story he sings about in this song is true. AMBUSH will instantly put you in the same mood as Bob Marley's BAD CARD, as AMBUSH has a similar groove and bass line as the Bob Marley hit. In AMBUSH, Apple offers great lines that can be heard in various Bob Marley songs. RUDEBOY SHUFFLIN, the single from the album, is one of Israel Vibration's best-known songs. Absolute reggae offered by Apple on that track. Wiss' BORDERLINE is another absolute standout, as he addresses the many problems faced in the world today. The music really shines on this one. And, of course ON THE ROCK shows Skelly showing concern to all those locked in captivity. ON THE ROCK finishes of the album with a great vibe. You can truly feel the power as Skelly screams "JAH!!!" towards the end of the track. Overall, "On the Rock" is a great album, and the first time Israel Vibration used 12 tracks on an album. The more, the better, in my opinion. Check out "On the Rock..." It's sure to please.

Everything on this cd is good. Not one bad song on the whole thing. The vocals are very conscious and roots-wise. The Roots Radics are laying down the heavy roots riddims with ease and style. This is a GREAT roots reggae cd and I recommend that you definitely pick this cd up and add it to your collection. My personal favorite songs by Israel Vibration are the songs that Apple Gabriel , who has since left the group, sings the lead vocals on. That is not to say the others are bad by any means. These 3 together offer up some stunning harmonies and have perfected a newer style of reggae which added greatly to the world of reggae.

The newer cd's by Israel Vibration are good in my opinion, but they lack the smooth voice of Apple Gabriel. I suggest that if you enjoy his voice, as on the song Ambush for instance, then go pick up his debut solo effort entitled APPLE GABRIEL...Another Moses. A very worthwhile solo effort.

Bottom line? Israel Vibration is always a sure hit! Also recommended by them:

I like The Same Song too, but the production is less than quality on that one. Great music though.

Man, just the roots and vibes of the first song on this album should sum up the review-- MUST HAVE! A classy reggae band and one you should definately have many albums of in your collection. Much props.

Isreal Vibrations have carried the torch of hard knocking conscious reggae since the death of Bob. Mr counselor man and ambush are close to the newer reggae styles while Rude Boy Shuffling is a pure, back-a-yard, foundation-shacking BIG TUNE. This CD is for all the conscious brethren. Nuff respect from Trinis at SCSU

This is absolutely IV's best collection of all time. There isn't a bad song in the bunch. If you buy only one reggae CD in your life make sure this is it! Highly recommend.

I find it hard to rate which Israel Vibration album is the best, but this is definitely up there. Red Eyes is my absolute favorite on the cd, but every song is a hit in my opinion. I just wish modern American radio would pick up some of this REAL music instead of the Disney sponsered crap they feed to the lemming public (ie britney, nsync...gag). Israel Vibration has such a harmonious mellow and happy feel to it. Really cool vibes and simply the best vocalists in reggae. Cool conscious roots songs. HIGHly recommended!
