very exciting score. Blends Latino and Rap in a very stylized and unigue way. It is exciting to listen to and makes you desire to see it on the satge!

I haven't seen this musical until today, but my sister recommend me this CD, I bought it and I never thought it could become one of my favourite soundtracks of a musical. The music is amazing, Lin Miranda has a tremendous talent composing every single letter of this play.

The latin influence in the music make it different, happy, fresh and enjoyable. 96,000 is one of my favourite songs as well as Blackout, but I think the best song is Sunrise!!!

You won't regret buying this CD. Highly recommended!!!

I have to admit to being a bit cynical about the future of the Broadway musical. The Great White Way has become increasingly dominated by revivals, gimmicky star casting, and uninspired musicals based on movies that seemingly came out last year.

But "In the Heights" has renewed my faith in musical theatre's future. Here is a show that tells an original tale (hooray!) about a group of Latinos living in Washington Heights as they struggle to find their "home" in the world. Firstly, I applaud the show for helping to diversify the musical theatre scene. Secondly, it has been a long time since I have seen a show so singularly committed to a central theme (this theme being "home"), which I think lends "In the Heights" a cohesion other new works lack.

The Tony-winning score on this recording manages to be fresh and pop-influenced without being repetitive. Each song furthers the plot or character developement (a must in modern musicals), while the Latino flair and modern setting allow for sounds not often heard in the theatre. There's also some excellent dance music interspersed throughout.

The young and energetic cast performs these songs expertly, lead by composer Lin-Manuel Miranda as the rapping narrator/protagonist Usnavi. Miranda's raps (and indeed, his lyrics for the entire show) are sophisticated and clever while remaining authentic to the characters and situations, and he performs them admirably.

But he leaves the heavy vocal lifting to a trio of very talented women: Mandy Gonzalez, Karen Olivo, and Olga Merediz. As college drop-out Nina, Gonzalez has the most singing, which she handles well despite some strain heard in the upper range of her belt. Olivo - who plays Vanessa, a woman who desperately wants out of Washington Heights - has the best voice of the bunch, which is showcased especially well in the descant she sings during "96,000" and "Alabanza." And as Abuelo Claudia, the neighborhood matriarch, Merediz absolutely nails her showstopping "Paciencia y Fe," which is easily the best track on the CD.

From beginning to end, "In the Heights" is an entertaining show that manages to get you involved with the characters and their struggles without seeming heavy-handed or forced. Although "Spring Awakening" seems to be this decade's "Rent," I believe "In the Heights" will do the most to get younger and more diverse audiences into the theatre. It's honest and heartfelt message speaks to everyone.

I saw this show in it's off Broadway debut and loved it! And I'm happy to say the CD was a breath of fresh air as well, the way Lin-Manuel's lyrics and prose take you to the Heights; literally!

Aside from the Janet Jackson c.d. "Decade" NOT being in a clear cd case,
I found nothing wrong with this product.

It's so great to listen to this album again. I absolutely adored Janet Jackson's music and I can remember purchasing the vinyls and listening to the songs and the remixes and just blasting the music from my garage and really ticking off my neighbors.

But I also remember how my friends and I were just amazed were onstage presence, her cool music videos and just how sexy she was and I admit that I was head over heels with Janet Jackson. Remember that music video for "The Pleasure Principle"? Wow!

As for this compilation album "Design of a Decade 1986/1996, the music features a songs released from the following full length albums "Control", "Rhythm nation 1814 and a song from her "Janet" album spanning over a decade worth of music.

From her 10th CD single "What Have You Done For Me Lately" from 1986 up to her 1995 hit single "Runway".

Even though this album is over a decade old, there are tracks that still stand strong even today despite its age. Probably the song that I have listened to over a zillion times is her hit CD single "That's the Way Love Goes" which debuted at #1, featured a sexy video and just a groove and beat that you just can help but fall in love with. The sultry vocals of Janet Jackson and that hypnotic groove ceases to get told for me.

The old school slow ballad "Let's Wait Awhile" sounds as beautiful now as it did back in 1987 and if anything, quite nostalgic of my teenage years and definitely had a positive message within its lyrics. Along with "Let's Wait Awhile" was the 1990 slow jam "Come Back to Me", which has that early 90s style of music, especially with the percussion but nonetheless, still is a beautiful ballad to listen to.

Playing classic hits such as "Nasty" and "Control" still sounds just as good as it was back then and it's hard to believe it's been over 20 years when these songs have come out. Including 1989 hit "Rhythm nation", who could forget the outfit and choreography from that whole album?

Now, was this album perfect? Granted, they fit a lot of songs within the CD's 80 minutes but I wish "Where Are You Now" was included and I'm sure others hoped there were more singles from her album "Janet" included on the album. So, for some who prefer the later hits may have wished for inclusion of those songs on "Design of a Decade".

I love this album! I grew up with her hit songs and you get 15 of her classic hits on one CD plus a newer track with "Twenty Foreplay". But if you are a fan of Janet Jackson and wanted all those old school hits from the mid 80s up to the mid 90s, you can't go wrong with "Design of a Decade 1986/1996.

And I'm sure you can find this CD online for a great price these days at under a dollar (cheaper than one mp3). Definitely an album worth owning if you love Janet Jackson's music.

This one will be at CD Warehouse too, I love Janet and I thought I would love this one, but I couldn't even make it all the way through, I tried skipping through it but they all seemed to start off with the same beat. Maybe it's just not riding music, so I'll try it as clean-up music before I sell it.

By 1996, Janet Jackson was pretty much a pop superstar with 3 classic albums already under her belt. She had countless hit and gained a vast assembly of fans worldwide. When it came to releasing a greatest hits album is was pretty much a no brainer! "Design of Decade" features all the singles from "Control" and "Rhytm Nation 1814" including the massive hit "That's The Way Love Goes" from the "janet." The album includes 2 new tracks which are both wonderful and one becoming Janet's 17th gold single in the form of "Runaway." All of Janet's hits sound fresher than they did when they were first released and some have been re-vamped a little to sound better ("Alright" and "Black Cat", for example!) The album can be summed up like this:

Runaway-An upbeat exotic song about Janet visiting her friends from countries all over the world. Janet's vocals are sweet and sincere with good lyrics make this another great addition to Janet's collection of hits.-5/5 stars

Twenty Foreplay-A beautiful track that starts a very sensual ballad before becoming a mid-tempo r&b groove. Solid lyrics and Janet's signature sexy vocals make this a keeper.-5/5 stars

The only downside is that they album could have included more hits fromthe "janet." album like "If", "Again" and "Any time, Any place". But "Design of A Decade" is a great collection of the first half of Janet's career and is essential to any Janet's fan's collection.

I have liked janet since i was a little girl and i was born in 1981 so thats a long time. I liked her greatest hits cd because it shows you how she was earlier and then how she is now. You can hear the changes in her voice and know that each album will be better!!

Janet has had some tough recent years. Her last few albums haven't had much impact, due to her sadly being defined by the superbowl incident and her weight fluctuation. She does not get the credit she deserves. I do think she hasn't really been putting her all into these last few albums, but at her weakest she is still in the game creating records that are better than all the other crap out there. Discipline is a little experimental, a little nasty, very gay, and overall a good disc. But she can do better, which I think is why so many people are having problems with her. Due to her using all these different producers, the overall album just seems very calculated, but still enjoyable. Discipline has your upbeat stuff (Feedback, luv, 2nite, rock with u) and cheese-drenched ballads (greatest x, never letchu go, can't be good). There is the requisite track featuring missy elliot, a track where janet tells her daddy to whip her, and a perversely so-bad-it's-good song called "so much betta" which utilizes a daft punk sample. This is classic janet jackson, updated for 2008...who was maybe smoking something while she recorded the album. Don't be jealous.

I listened to Discipline more than Damita Jo! This album has a lot of hard dance beats that had me feeling sultry (lol). I think this album should have received my recognition than it did. I would also love to see JJ make more mature adult sounds like she has done in the past because I really miss her more mid tempo songs too. But all in all the album had alot of club songs that were HOTT.

Janet...If you read these comments, please take the public's advice, we are the people who pay your bills, and maintain your lifestyle. If you make another album, let your man Jermaine Dupri, hook you up. You should have guest appearances of top rappers, and singers for collaborations. You should make a more R&B album like you did with Damita Jo, and 1993's album janet.

Also trying singing in a language the public can understand. A lot of people don't like your music, because we can't understand what you are singing about.

I still love you, but please change your style, bite off of Rhianna, Ciara, and Beyonce. These new school diva's took your spot. Hang it up!!!

At first I only liked a handful of songs but the more I listened the more those songs are the songs I love and I just like the rest. I am actually going to pay to go to concert (non-cheap seats too) and it is to see her and hear her old and NEW stuff. If LL Cool J opens that would really be icing on the cake.

I had never been a huge Janet Jackson fan. I owned the albums All For You and Damita Jo(that's the Janet generation i grew up in). All For You was a cd that for me,that contained a lot of filler, there were only 4 tracks that i found COMPLETLEY IRRESISTABLE, and that's usually where i got my "Janet Fix". And Damita Jo- well 'nough said.

I had always wondered why Janet Jackson had been around for so long. Her music was not consistent at all. But at that moment i had no idea about the masterpiece creation that is "janet."

This Cd hit me from nowhere, i had absolutely no expectations when i first listened to it and i was completely blown away!

I remember i had seen the "that's the way love goes" video a couple years back, and it did nothing for me, in fact the only reason why i even saw the whole video was because J.Lo was in it back when she was unknown and that captivated me to watch it. Then a couple of years later I borrowed the JANET album from a friend and the rest is history.

I truly believe that this is one of Janet's best albums, I listened to Rhythm Nation 1814 a month after because it was supposed to be better than JANET, and that is a LIE!!!

JANET contains some of her best songs. IF and THIS TIME have attitude and they're all in your face. While songs like AGAIN and WHERE ARE YOU NOW will melt your soul. I can go on and on about each amazing songs, but all you need to know is that this is

this is up there with velvet rope. i like almost every track on here. great to listen to and great to dance to.

It seems that most Janet Jackson fans would rank either "Rhythm Nation" or "Velvet Rope" as their favorite Janet albums. "Rhythm Nation" is one pop hit after another, and "Velvet Rope" shows a very dark and personal side of the artist. Both of those albums are outstanding in their own way.

But this is the album that took me from a Janet listener to a true Janet fan. I honestly believe that every song, including the bonus track, are good. "That's The Way Love Goes" remains one of my five favorite songs of all-time, a perfect, smooth R&B song that I'll listen to in any mood. "If" is a great dance song. "This Time" is a catchy, upbeat song with an opera feel -- who else can pull that off? "Throb" is perfect for the dance club. "New Agenda" is a song featuring the legendary Chuck D that tells African American women to be proud of who they are. "Anytime Anyplace" is smooth and soulful.

This album was about Janet, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis taking some chances, and it was the bridge from the in-your-face Janet with a message to the unnecessarily erotic Janet we often get these days. It's an absolute gem.

With such a solid album seeing this artist make a bold statement with her sex appeal, it's no wonder "janet." became Janet's biggest selling album with over 17 million albums sold. While Janet would continue to make her signature baby-making songs on her future album, they will never be as sexy and as classy as how she did them on this brilliant album!

I don't know what Janet Jackson was on in 1989, but I'd suggest she get back on it. I recently purchased this album yet AGAIN on CD about two weeks ago, and while I knew all the tunes, it also really surprised me. Despite being of the same pop-funk genre that Paula Abdul so heartily embraced in the early 1990s, the songs here are just TIMELESS. How could Janet use the same old instruments everyone else did, but still craft songs that could stand the test of time? I don't know, but one things for sure - this album is a flawless masterpiece.

Its also the only Janet album where every interlude actually works, makes sense, and acts as a proper segue for the next track. The most famous one of these is the "Lets Dance" intro that segues into "Miss You Much". An impeccable transition. But the R&B overtones of the album never really harm it. Instead, it serves as a precursor to the Neo-Soul movement - especially realized on the simply breathtaking "Someday is Tonight" that can leave me speechless all these years later. It is a song that defines what songwriting is all about, it is a song that reinvents the world of balladry and the very meaning of R&B. By far, this is the greatest track on the album (and ironically most people don't even know it, as it wasn't released as a single).

The singles of course, are spectacular. "Miss You Much" set the standard that all of todays' third-rate pop stars try to emulate, and the ageless "Love will Never Do Without You" is a crystal slice of pop music glory. "Escapade" (another No. 1 Single for Janet) is a fun romp that has an indescribably catchy melody as its' hookline, and the wondrous "Black Cat" with its electric guitars act as a perfect marriage between R&B and Rock (this hadn't even been attempted at the time, which is why the song was considered groundbreaking).

Albums come and go but "Rhythm Nation" will have a special place in pop music history. Why? Well, there is a theme here. Listen to "The Knowledge". This is an album that focusses on social issues - homelessness, unemployment, racism, homophobia; but it also speaks of other, more pressing issues such as childrens' education ("Livin in a World they Didn't Make"), and world politics and geoeconomics ("State of the World"). And the amazing thing is, Janet actually managed to roll these messages in the most beautiful tunes - tunes that you will never forget once you listen to them.

Its hard to imagine that Janet Jackson was once a social activist and a TRUE MUSICIAN. This album proves that she once was - and what an album this was because of that.

This album is still the best. Still putting a smile on my face making my head bop and my feet tap under my desk. Classic.

If her 1986 mega hit "Control" wasn't enough to show that Janet Jackson was a great artist, then 1989's "Rhythm Nation 1814" would show that Janet Jackson was an artist beyond her time! One of her strongest and most impressive efforts, "Rhythm Nation 1814" takes the concept of world issues like poverty, prejudice, and homicide and mixes in some of the best pop music ever created to create on of the best albums of all time! I'm serious! "Rhythm Nation 1814" is a very bold album as well as it shows how creative and innovative Janet's music is. Winning countless awards and becoming the first artist in history to score 7 top 5 hits from one album, this remarkable album can be summed up like this:

Someday Is Tonight-A prequel of sorts to the sexy "janet." album, Janet expresses ecstasy as she and her lover finally get to act on their lustful yearning on a steamy night. With a very jazzy yet sexual arrangement with an excellent saxophone solo toward the ending, not to mention, Janet's heavy breathing, this will definitely catch your ear!-4.5/5 stars

Interlude: Livin'...In Complete Darkness-Janet concludes the album with one of the most powerful quotes I've ever heard on an album.

"Rhythm Nation 1814" was one of the most defining moments of Janet's career. Not only did it go on to sell 15 million copies worldwide, but the Rhythm Nation Tour became the most successful debut tour of all time opening to audience of 2 million! But the album was also Janet's most influential album as its world changing concept inspired a variety of people including college students, pushing them to finally graduate by not taking their education for granted as well as creating a larger fan base for Janet. An undeniable classic and an album that still sounds as fresh today!

The Velvet Rope is an album with a purpose: to unravel the enigma of our human actions. Janet Jackson has made it clear in the title track that "we have a special need to feel that we belong". This is Jackson's answer to why we do some of the things we do. While the album is sexually explicit, every explicit moment simply leads back to the human need to feel special. Janet Jackson's jump into the arena of sexually explicit music is done with grace, and compared to some of her contemporaries, Jackson dominates (no innuendo intended!). While Madonna's songs such as "Erotica" showed how sex can be a means of pain and pleasure, The Velvet Rope's songs transcend raw pleasure. One might say it is about the need for love. Though Jackson's voice is a soft wispy one, she is capable of breathing life into songs due to her personal experiences with depression and marital problems, her experiences outside of her own concept of the "velvet rope". This album is a heartfelt reminder that we all need to be accepted by ourselves as well as others. Truly a masterpiece!

The timing for "The Velvet Rope" must have been excellent. Released in the fall of 1997, Janet's album got a favorable review in Time magazine and over the years it developed a cult status among her fans, but also many casual listeners fell in love with it. The question remains: Why?

On the surface an antidote to the happy and loose blockbuster "janet." album of 1993, this is a darker, brooding, personal and sexually charged CD. However, this alone does not necessarily make for great music.

In fact, the album copies "janet." in more ways than one. Not only in the matters of length and use of Jackson's very own type of interludes. Sometimes it resembles its predecessor more than it should - the song "Every Time" sounds like "Again" Part Two and comes at just about the same time as that beautiful smash came on "janet." Overall, both "janet." and "The Velvet Rope" start with fresh, danceable tunes and get slower towards the end. But while "janet." finished with good songs like "Where Are You Now" and "Any Time, Any Place," the last two good songs on "The Velvet Rope" are "I Get Lonely" and a cover of Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night". "Rope Burn" and "Anything" may be pushing sexual boundaries, but as tunes both are merely boring and even the optimistic closer "Special" does not remedy the situation much.

Beats at the beginning of the album reach a peak on "Got 'Til It's Gone", one of the first real hip-hop singles that still hold water now (even though the artist's reputation was tarnished by not crediting British singer Des'Ree hit "Feel So High", which was also recognized by the court). Other faster tracks offer some novelty beats, but lackluster songwriting.

As for the highlights, though, the middle of album showcases Janet at her late 1990's best. The dance hit "Together Again", "Empty", depicting a computer-love obsession and rock-guitar-fed "What About" on an abusive relationship all carry great music over meaningful lyrics.

In the final analysis, Janet Jackson's career took a different turn with "The Velvet Rope". Although praised as the bold, courageus step toward meaningful music, in fact it meant that she was not anymore delivering super-consistent albums full of potential great hits. With Janet this was a trademark, as from her first three regular albums almost every single song was a potential hit - the songs were so good, not just a fluffy forgettable fare you hear on radios these days.

"The Velvet Rope" is different. It marks a start of Janet producing uneven albums. "All For You" in 2001 showed a certain promise (being a better, stronger record that Rope), but the slow decline of the legend has continued ever since then.

The Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson is a mixed bag for me. The songs I do like include: Go Deep, I Get Lonely, Everytime, a cover of Rod Stewart's Tonight's the Night, Anything, and What About? The rest of the songs are pretty much filler, Janet's voice is so soft, you can't distinguish what she is singing about, thank god the lyrics are included. The Velvet Rope is probably her most personal album and I appreciate that but this isn't an album I listen too much.

One of the traditions in my parents' house was stuffing the stockings at Christmas with smaller gifts. CDs, movies, books...something to keep us kids busy while our parents attempted to stay asleep for just a few more minutes. In 1997, I ran downstairs to discover The Velvet Rope sitting in my stocking. Having been a Janet fan since Control, I instantly popped it into my over-sized portable CD player and listened.

It was the one Christmas where my parents actually were able to sleep in.

At the time when I was an impressionable and naive 15 year old, I didn't understand everything that was going on and after the one listen, I put it aside and went back to the safer Janet; the known Janet. It wasn't until a few years later, after hearing repeats of some of Janet's songs that I realized how many great songs came from that album. The Velvet Rope marks Janet's pinnacle achievement. It was her masterpiece, a culmination of everything that came before.

Things hinted at and talked around where instead thrust into the open air. It's a startling CD and a very honest one. Ten years later, I still find myself popping the CD in and never-not even once-hitting skip. From the moment the piercing electric violin strikes the first shiver-inducing note to the final song that provides a glimpse of happiness, The Velvet Rope has capitvated me, over and over.

With later albums on the lightweight and airy side, I turn to The Velvet Rope to find Janet at a time in her life where her music was sexy, dark and personal. I love this album and if you haven't listened to it, check it out.

In 1997, Janet Jackson went throught one of the toughest times of her career. Suffering from severe depression, Janet ran to her music and used it as her therapy. Unknowingly, Janet would create one of the most bizarre yet incredible albums of all time. Rivaling even the epic powerhouse "Rhythm Nation 11814" as the best album of her career, "The Velvet Rope" has such a significant depth in it's music that most artists dream of. Like "Rhythm Nation", Janet covers a vareity of strong topics like depression, loneliness, domestic abuse, AIDS, death, homophobia, even bondage! The music is so surreal and one of the few albums that I've truly idenfied with as I too have suffered from severe depression. This flawless album can be summed up like this:

Twisted Elegance-Janet utters the title and declares that we have a need to feel special and that it create The Velvet Rope.

Velvet Rope-A haunting, thought-provoking track that has Janet singing mysteriously. The lyrics are poetic and the arrangements are stunning with Vanessa Mae's great input.-5/5 stars

You-One of the most bizarre songs of Janet's career with a flashy yet retrospective beat and Janet singing in a very deep even inhuman. A song about self-reflection, it song that has you wondering about you you think you really are.-5/5 stars

Got Til' It's Gone-One of my favorite songs from Janet's career and one of her most underrated, this is a dreary yet soulful r&b groove that's about yearning for the things you lost and wished you had again. With an exceptional rap solo from Q-tip, Janet's whispery yet chilling vocals, and an ingenuis sample of Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi", this is musical bliss!-5/5 stars

Interlude: Speaker Phone-A dirty yet hilarious coversation between Janet and (possibly?) Lisa Marie. "You're cooche gonna swell up and fall apart", lol!

My Need-A fast paced r&b track that has Janet singing about her sexual desires for the night. It's very cool and well arranged track that is catchy and matches the mood of the album perfectly.-4.5/5 stars

Interlude: Fasten Your Seatbelts-A funny intro to the next song with Janet and her friends telling listeners to fasten their seatbelts.

Go Deep-A great fun-filled club groove that is a refreshing change from the darkness of the album with great arrangements and an undeniablly catachy chorus.-5/5 stars

Free Xone-Another bizarro song with the track shifting from a subtle beat to swinging uptempo beat. Janet hardly sings but the lyrics are strong as it speaks on homophoia and the arrangement truly handled flawlessly-4.5 stars

Interlude: Memory-Janet gives touching quote about memory and pain.

Together Again-One of the greatest songs of her career with an infectious beat, Janet's wonderful vocals and touching lyrics about losing her friend to AIDS. It's no wonder it was her most successful single worldwide!-5/5 stars

Interlude: Online-The sounds of internet use fill the background.

Empty-A breathtaking song beyond it's time which is about the emptiness of online chats since it was relatively new in the late 90s. Janet just excels throughout the song.-5/5 stars

Interlude: Full-Janet gives another amazing quote: "How empty of me...to be so full of you."

What About-The most intense song Janet has ever done! It switches from a calm, soothing beat to an raging rock/r&b flare with jaw-dropping lyrics. Janet give one of the best vocal performances as she switches from vuneraable state to an enrage siren with such ease. A powerful song with a heartbreaking message about domestic abuse, this is an unforgettable masterpiece!-5/5 stars

Everytime-A beautiful ballad that sees Janet showing that vunerable side of herself so well.-4.5/ stars

Tonight's The Night- An effortless and refreshing rendition of Neil Young's 1975 classic.-4.5/5 stars.

I Get Lonely-Probably her best r&b song since "That's The Way Love Goes". With a heavy soulful beat, Janet's smokin vocals, and lovely lyrics about loneliness, it's all so good!-5/5 stars

Rope Burn-The most controversial song on the album that finds Janet for the first time pushing her sexual limits! The lyrics are very risque and ratchy yet Janet still pulls it off...this time anyway.-4.5/5 stars

Anything-A very dark and soothing ballad that sees Janet still sexually frustrated and urging her lover that she would do about anything to get some. The smooth arrangements and Janet's quality carm make this irresitible!-5/5 stars

Interlude: Sad-"You must learn to water your spiritual garden." Nicely siad, very poetic!

Special-A graceful ballad that has Janet sounding so sweet and vunerable as she explains that she has the need to feel special by singing about her life.-4.5/ stars

*Hidden Track* Can't Be Stopped-A glamourious uptempo track that should have been an offical track. The beat is cool with Janet singing with confidence about being invunerable when it comes prejudice, her gender, etc. A perfect finish!-5/5 stars

I can't explain it in any other words how incredible this really album is. To this day, it's timeless and is better than ALL of the crap these young artists are putting out today. "The Velvet Rope" is an album that makes you think about the music you're listening to instead lsiteners just jamming to it. Janet truly created her finest and unfornately, last truly classic album as her albums of the 2000s just can't touch the brilliance of this phenomenal effort.

This was back in the day before Janet starting singing the same old "sex kitten" tunes. It albums like this and "Rhythm Nation" where she was singing real songs.

The 80s! Virtually where music was at it's finest and some of the world's biggest artist broke out to become legends. The biggest without a doubt was Micheal Jackson who by 1984 broke dozens of records with his monster hit "Thriller". From his videos to his performances, Micheal was everywhere and crowned the one of the greatest artists to ever live. It seems that there was no room for any of the other Jackson siblings to follow in his shadow, especially the youngest of the family, Janet! "Control" is unforgettable statement of independence that jump started Janet's amazing career. Hard to believe this is only the beginning of the incredible music this women would release to the masses.

Look before she did a stunt at the Superbowl, she broke through the ranks of pop selling music star with this album entitled Control. I love the songs but I love Let's Wait a While because it's my favorite of hers. In all honesty, I prefer Janet over Michael. She has a great range in music, she sings about love, relationships, and being a woman of the 1980s and of the modern age. I hope she still sings these songs at concerts. She is equally talented as Michael and maybe more so because she is also a talented dancer as well.

This album is Janet Jackson's "Thriller" and is undeniably the absolute essential JJ album any hardcore or even more casual fan must own.

It's 22 years later and this album has retained a timeless quality -- something few albums of any genre of music have done. I still love this album and so does my seven-year-old brother who can get into this despite being enundated by the flavor of the month pop/hiphop/R&B songstresses of the day.

GENRE-DEFINING INFLUENCE
Give equal credit to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for creating a (at the time) new sound by laying Janet's gentle, soothing vocals over their high energy beats, producing a cutting edge combination at the time. Janet broke out at a time when all the best singers of the time had flair and five octave voices (Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills, Teena Marie) though decidedly more refined styles. Janet couldn't compete vocally with any of these fine ladies, yet she outsold all of them and gained invaluable radioplay -- two factors that made the industry take notice and crank out cheap knockoffs with the same formulaic approach for the next 20 years (and counting).

"Control" is Janet's masterpiece. It remains as refreshing and exciting as feel-good music goes.

I was going to the concert and I had to have this before I went. I got my wish. It was in great condition.

I love this cd. I need another one to replace this one. The ulitmate song for me is "Someone to call my lover." I don't know what's going on with her lately, but I hope she get back in touch with her origin roots soon to put out more addicting cd's like this one..

Well after the morbid masterpiece that was "The Velvet Rope", Janet Jackson began the new millennium on a very high note with her second film, "The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps" which went to number #1. Not to mention the soundetrack 's lead single, "Doesn't Really Matter", became Janet's 9th #1 hit on Hot 100 in the summer of 2000. Then a year later, Janet was honored by MTV as the First ever Icon as her 15 year career at that point contributed a lot to pop culture. Then came "All 4 U", Janet's 7th studio album which opened with an incredible 600,000+ in record sales it's first week on sale. It became the superstar's biggest opening week sale ever, much of it being the amazing success of the lead single. But unfornately while "All 4 U" was a commercial hit, selling 7 million copies worldwide (3 million in the U.S.). Not to mention, Janet became the only artist in history with 5 back to back #1 albums. The album was major disappointment to critics and some fans after an album like "The Velvet Rope". Now, while the "All 4 U" may not have leaved up to expectations of Janet's musical excellence, it's not as bad as critics say, even though there are some surprising duds here and there. It's Janet's most pop sounding album since "Rhythm Nation", but some song hold stronger than others. This album can be summed up like this:

With an infectious beat, the wonderful sample of Change's "Glow of Love", and Janet's impressive vocals throughtout, it's no wonder this was #1 for 7 weeks on the Hot 100 becoming one of Janet's most successful single of her career.-5/5 stars

2wayforu (Interlude)-Janet talks to herself in a 2 way conversation.

Come On Get Up-An good upbeat, uptempo pop track that is great for the clubs and Janet sounds great throughout even if it is corny at times.-3.5/5 stars

When We Oooo-A very soothing and smooth ballad where Janet's voice bounces off the beat so beautifully.-4/5 stars

China Love-One of my personal favorites and the best songs on the album. The Chinese oriental music with the ringing bells mixed with a heavy r&b beat is arranged so well. Janet's voice just slides down the song so gracefully.-4.5/5 stars

Love Scene (Oooh Baby)-The weakest of this string of ballads. The song just grows more redundant as it goes along and doesn't have the strength of the songs before it.-2.5/5 stars

Would You Mind-The most controversal song of the album and probably of Janet's career. It's this song that generate the most hate for the album, and made critics begin to question Janet's obsession with sex. The lyrics are at their dirtiest as Janet leaves nothing to the imagination. It's a "hate it or love it" song and for me, I enjoy it from time to time but lacks what makes a Janet ballad sexy.-3.5/5 stars

Lame (Interlude)-Janet thinks guys are lame at times. Yeah, Janet, we so are!

Trust A Try-The album picks like a raging storm with this amazing track! Janet shows once again she's a versatile artist with this incredible rock thriller. Janet's vocals are sharp and the guitar solo towards the end is flawless. Why wasn't this a single?-5/5 stars

Son of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)-Janet collaborates with Carly Simon for a heavy r&b/hip-hop track that sees Janet almost rapping completely throughout about getting revenge on her old lover (Rene perhaps?). It's a cool track even though most critics don't like it.-4/5 stars

Truth-One of the worst Janet ballads ever and worst of the album! Seriously, the song starts off well enough but goes on forever and feels tedious by the end. Janet even sounds bored throughout.-2/5 stars

Theory (interlude)-Janet has a theory...that we never hear.

Someone to Call My Lover-A wonderful pop tune and another highlight of the album. Janet's vocals are great as usual and the lyrics are sweet as Janet searches for a new lover.-4.5/5 stars

Feel So Right-Almost feels like a watered down version of the last song. Janet's vocals still sound great and it's a decent song overall.-3.5/5 stars

Doesn't Really Matter-Putting the updated remixed version on her album, Janet's 2000 #1 smash single not only fits the album perfectly but improves the album from it sometimes mediocrity.-5/5 stars

Better Days-A hopeful ballad as Janet sings about getting over the pain and problems of her life by looking forward to the better days. I love the arrangements as the song picks up and lyrics are great. A great closing song!-4.5/5 stars

After 7 years since it's release, "All 4 U" is said to be where Janet began her downfall in music. Focusing too much on her image and sex, and less on her lyrics and social issues of her past albums. Some critize for it sounding too pop, which it's weird considering the album was released during the time where pop music was still high in the music world. So critizes for it's sexed-up songs, which beside one, can be ignored. I personally like the album a lot because it's has it's moments of classic Janet and while it's down step after her last albums, I consider it better than what's to come.

Although Velvet Rope is one of the best records to have ever been released by janet, she was criticized for being too dark and mellow in her music so she went back to making happy dance music on this CD. Some of the tracks are definitely well done, while others are just fillers. I guess if you listen to velvet rope and all for you back to back, you hear the transition of a woman overcoming depression and learning to have fun while still dealing with personal issues.

Even though I've stated that Janet Jackson is my favorite singer, I've become disgusted with the mediocrity of her more recent output after having my subconscious indelibly stamped with the greatness of her late 80s/early 90s albums. None of her albums are completely disposable, but there's not a lot to recommend this one, either. "Doesn't Really Matter" and "Come On Get Up" are plausible efforts, but the rest is pretty tepid, especially the embarrassingly bad "Someone To Call My Lover" which is a good way to make pop purists angry with its blatant rip-off of the America classic "Ventura Highway".

I have always loved Janet Jackson's masterpiece of an album, Janet, but had gradually lost interest due to overplaying it. However, this remix album has not only renewed my interest in the original, but has also brought many of these classic songs into a new light. This is more of a complete reimagining of the songs from Janet, rather than a simple remix effort. "Throb" features a sexy new sax part that continues in an amazing solo after the fade of the rest of the song (and it clocks in at a thrilling 9+ minutes). Overall, this is well worth the money and is a CD that you will enjoy for years to come.

1. That's The Way Love Goes (CJ FXTC Club Mix) (6:24)-A great opener and really sexy in its own way. The bass is cool.

2. If (Brothers In Rhythm House Mix) (7:10)-A HOT house mix that'll get you moving! The best elements of house are all in here. (Brothers In Rhythm also did a more hip-hop flavored version of this song, the "Swing Yo Pantz" mix, which I think was on the single for "If".)

3. Because of Love (Frankie & David Treat Mix) (6:41)-"BOL" wasn't one of my favorite songs from janet., but this makes it a hell of a lot better. Sexy.

4. And On and On (4:50)-A B-side. It's really funky.

5. Throb (Morales Badyard Club) (8:59)-WOW! This one is steamin! The way David Morales loops Janet's moans just gives off this hard, sexy feel.

6. You Want This (E-Smoove's House Anthem) (9:51)-"You betta-you betta work it!" One of my favorite house mixes of all time. Really melodic and a huge improvement on the original, which was just noisy.

7. Anytime, Anyplace (CJ's 12" Mix) (8:18)-My favorite song from janet. gets sexier. CJ Mackintosh is a great remixer, and it's a shame we don't hear from him much today.

8. Where Are You Now (Nellee Hooper Mix) (5:22)-One of the many hip-hop mixes on the end of this release. A pretty nice version, but that beat is so cheesy.

9. 70's Love Groove (5:47)-This is a really smooth song and is great for chilling out. I love it.

10. What'll I Do (Dave Navarro Mix) (4:20)-Wow. This one is really good, except for the pitch-shifting. (Yes, this is done by Dave Navarro from Jane's Addiction.)

11. Anytime, Anyplace (R. Kelly Mix) (5:11)-Pretty slow-burning, which isn't a bad thing. I like it. A nice mellow closer.

I recommend this highly. Let's see some more remix albums from Miss J in the future!

'janet.remixed' is a nice supplemental CD for fans who own Jackson's best selling 'janet' disc. Available only as an import, 'janet.remixed' features a stunning array of remixes, but the two B-sides ('And On & On' and '70's Love Groove') are worth the price of the CD. 'janet.remixed' could've been a 5 star CD if they included 'One More Chance', which was the B-Side to the 'If' single. I remastered my 'janet.remixed' CD to include 'One More Chance' as track #12, and there's more than enough space on the CD! Enjoy!

I was always a Janet fan, had the albums went to the concerts etc.... But it wasn't till VR, I became a die hard fan! Anyway, rediscovering an artist is amazing and hearing these remixed really made me take a step back and say "whoa!"

I think the best remix on here is CJ's remix of "Anytime Anyplace," he also did "That's The WaY Love Goes." I remember someone commented on, why did Janet let CJ remix her songs. Well, he is a tight remixer, duh. CJ also remixed some songs for my other favorite artists the london based band Incognito and he pimped their single too!

Get this, because most of the singles from the "janet" era are out of print just like her earlier singles.

Now, if we could get a remix album for "Rhythym Nation," ha, like that will happen. A girl can dream right?

I saw this album in my local town shopping centre in a popular record shop and I bought it because I already had the original "Janet." album. I did not expect much from it, as it was a remix album, but I bought it anyway to support one of my favourite artists. I was not left dissapointed I must say, and i'm glad to proudly add the remixes to my Janet collection, but I must admit, I was not as fully convinced as I normally am with other Janet albums, but I wasn't really suprised.

1. That's The Way Love Goes (CJ FXTC Club Mix)- It was an okay remix, but not as good as it could've been. It deserves the merits it gets though! (3/5)

2. If (Brothers In Rhythm House Mix)- BIR have did so many house remixes in the past for other artists and they have been great! This, however, sounds completely flawless to what they normally do! Maybe it will grow on me... (3/5)

3. Because Of Love (Frankie & David Treat Mix)- Treat? Not a very good mix with not enough vocals... (2/5)

4. And On And On- Very high standards! A great 'new' (at the time of the release) track! (5/5)

Okay but not great but not at all bad! Buy the original album for even more suprises! What the album could've had: A remix of "Again". Stars on the album: "What'll I Do" remix, "Any Time, Any Place" CJ's 12" remix.

This album is surprisingly very good considering that Miss Jackson doesn't even consider it as a part of her recording history. She shouldn't just because it wasn't a hit record. I really like the songs on this cd and it's a pretty solid pre-80's "bubble gum" pop album. My favorites are "You'll Never Find(A love Like Mine), "Young Love", "don't Mess Up This Good Thing", "Come Give Your Love To Me". SAWEET!

Janet's first album is nothing but bubblegum pop....and Janet has such a fresh and sweet voice on this album. "Young Love" and "Say You Do" are my favorites!

This a wonderful album. It really deserves a lot more credit than it recieved. Janet is a wonderful artist, and this album was a very good foundation to her career.

My first exposure to Janet Jackson the singer was in 1982 on the TV show Diff'rent Strokes. On the show, she played Willis' girlfriend Charlene who (ironically) was an aspiring singer. She sang a portion of "Young Love" on the show and shortly thereafter this album (her 1st) was released.

This is an album of standard but well produced R&B/pop songs showcasing young Janet's soft, sweet voice. On funkier tunes like "Say You Do", "Don't Mess Up This Good Thing" & the aforementioned "Young Love", Janet sings sweetly without over-doing it. The same can be said for more pop-ish tunes like "The Magic Is Working" & "You'll Never Find (A Love Like Mine)". But her soft voice really shines on the ballads "Love & My Best Friend" and especially "Forever Yours". "Come Give Your Love To Me" is an 80's new-wave flavored tune that Janet sounds cute singing.

I give this album 4 stars (instead of my usual 5) because although Janet sounds great on this album, this was her first and she really hadn't found 'her' sound until she hooked up with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and began recording the albums that would make her the superstar she is today (Control, Rhythm Nation 1814 and so on). However, this is still a cool album. I have it on cassette and I'm considering ordering it on CD.

I have always been a huge Janet Jackson fan and this was the first album I ever purchased by her. I was a fan of the song "Come & Give Your Love To Me", after purchasing the album, I later found the 45rpm as well. But this album was Janet's first and did not sell to well. It has sold approx. 400,000 copies in the U.S. and about 600,000 worldwide. The album peaked at #63 on the Pop Charts and #6 on the R&B charts. They do have a few standout tracks, such as "Young Love" and "Come & Give Your Love To Me". Those were the first two singles but barley cracking the charts. Another good track is, "The Magic Is Working". Of course, this album does not compare to her masterpiece "Control" or anything after that. But I would still recommend this to any Janet fan!
