I am just adding to the voices disgusted by Christina Roden's writing on King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown, which Amazon.com used for their official review. Her so-called review is an insult to the music and its makers, besides not making sense.

For the record, Augustus Pablo plays mainly the melodica, which is an instrument played by blowing through while manipulating a small keyboard that is part of the instrument. Pablo also played various keyboards, including the clavinet. And no one "slowed" the music down to make dub. Dub is simply re-mixed reggae with the vocals all or mostly removed.

I could go on correcting Roden's misinformation, but you get the idea. Ignore Roden and read the other volunteer reviewers for additional proper info.

Those who like hip hop, techno, or any other musical development of the last quarter century would do well to acquaint themselves with this masterpiece. This is where remixing began and no one has done it better than King Tubby in the ensuing years. Able to reduce a song down to its core elements and still make it utterly mesmerizing, Tubby paved the way for virtually all modern music. This is an album to play at maximum volume, while the bass and the groove wash over you with that perfect riddim. You can't call yourself a connoisseur of music without getting inside this rhythmic beast.

Clavinet, flute?!?!?!?!? Augustus Pablo plays the Melodica people! And to say the album has "no names" on it! Maybe no names as far as pop music is concerned. Pablo and King Tubby are 2 of the most influential Reggae\Dub artists dead or alive!!!!! Comparing them to Bob Marley is equally as ignorant! Please review only items you have half a clue about!!! I don't know what this reviewer is talking about "...also known as Glen Adams Upsetters keyboard player...". King Tubby is Osbourne Ruddock ONE of the originators of the style weh call 'rub-a-dub' alongside Lee "Scratch" Perry and another lesser known producer whose name evades me. For real the reviewer don't know what the bumclat she is talking about! very pretentious to think she can talk some bull-isht and get away with it! Augustus Pablo plays the melodica primarily, which is a children's instrument, a small keyboard which has a baffle and a mouthpiece to generate the tones. Clavinet is a floorstanding keyboard instrument which generates sounds similar to an electric guitar, and on some Jazz fusion records occupies the space of an electric guitar i.e. Herbie Hancock "Headhunters".

To further clarify, the riddims herein are written and arranged by Pablo, voiced by various vocalists, notably Jacob Miller whose "Baby I love you so" is the foundation of the title track, and "Keep on Knockin" here in dub as "Keep On Dubbing". So these are dub versions of those tunes with many featuring Pablo blowing on top, therefor putting them in a 'Horn version' or specifically 'Melodica version' context. Semantics.

Anyway, King Tubby meets rockers is absolutely essential and needs no introduction, as it is maybe the most well known 'Dub' albums of all time. This newly issued CD looks great with the added tracks and hopefully correct tracking as previous reissues of this album had incorrect sequencing. You should buy this. Tubbs is eternally the master at the controls, Pablo is the heaviest producer next to Vivain Jackson, and his meditations onn the Melodica are trancendant.

This record has gotten non-stop play since the day it was bought. K/T brings an excitement to dub music that so many others lack. Vocals perfectly placed, instrumentals that move and all the Tubby extras dressing up every track. Highly recommended.

My life changed the day I bought this CD. If you're a fringe reggae fan...sticking to Marley et al...but have never been quite sure where to go next may I direct you to the seminal King Tubby. Those of you priveliged enough to be familiar with his work will find this a source of Tubs greatest remixes and some rarities thrown in for good measure.
Dub is a primarily instrumental sibling of Reggae which will keep a smile on all those in proximity. The simplistic, yet succint nature of the songs coupled with the pioneering production wizardy of King Tubby will have you mesmerised at his fore-sight...techniques used here are 20 years ahead of their time. Enough nonsense just buy it!

THIS IS TO ME ONE OF THE BEST RAGGAE CD THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD,DENIS BROWN ,HORACE ANDY, BOB MARLEY, WAILING SOULS ANDJOHNNY CLARK ALL OF THESE PERFORMERS ARE GREAT WITH OUT ANY HELP FROM ANYONE.TO PUT THESE PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER WITH THE GREAT KING TUBBY IS TRULEY CLASSICAL, YOU WOULD HAVE TO HEAR IT TO BELEVE IT,A MUST HAVE CLASSICAL CD.

This is an excellent reissue of two of King Tubby's earliest and most influential albums - Dub From the Roots and The Roots of Dub. Both are produced by Bunny Lee, and both feature great mixing work by the King.The remastering and packaging are excellent as well. If you want to know the work of King Tubby, I would suggest this, along with King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown, and Freedom Sounds in Dub, as the core of a King Tubby collection.

Most highly recommended. This is one of the best re-mastering jobs I have heard -- fantastic. Plus the packaging is top-class work. 2 Cd set includes 2 original King Tubby dub releases -- two of his earliest efforts. The re-issue label has very wisely given each original LP a Cd of its own. And both these albums deserve the treatment, they are fantastic examples of dub as a form of sound sculputre as pioneered by King Tubby. The man was a true artist! Nifty fold-out glossy cardboard CD package reproduces the front cover of each LP. At the economy price this is available for, consider it a gift. Listen with headphones if you really want to blow your mind. Should be required listening for all DJ's and those interested in the art of mixing sound. Essential, essential, ESSENTIAL !!

this is an excellent collection of King Tubby's studio work from 1972-1977. every track displays Tubby's brilliance with mixing, re-arranging, and remixing these great reggae platters into classy and timeless dubs. King Tubby's understanding of space and sound is astonishing and it's so humbling to think that almost all of these great versions were done in his small bedroom apartment (and on shoddy, sub-standard equipment, too, i might add).

one note of interest is that King Tubby was an avid lover of not just reggae, but of jazz. and that improvisational spirit of jazz is felt so strongly in the way that he works in the studio. he takes a song's theme, rearranges it's parts and therefore taking it to a whole new level, and then bringing it back to it's stated purpose. it's really like he was extending the personality of a song and allowing it to grow and to be molded into one of his own. truly, amazing skill.

there are so many highlights on this collection, so it would be exhaustive to delve into my personal favorites; suffice it to say, that this is a well represented document of the founding father of dub music. a classic collection that no fan of old reggae/dub music should go without hearing.

The highlight of the year 2004, for me, was sitting on the beach in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, spliffed out of my mind, and listening to King Tubby's In Fine Style with earphones, for the first time. I have been digging deeper and deeper into dub reggae for the last few years, always looking for something new ( at least new to me ) and exciting. The young lady at the music store in Jamaica recommended this highly to me, and am I ever glad I took her advice and bought this collection of dub grooves. King Tubby was an innovator, a seer of the future. When you think about it, his practice of stripping a song down to its bare essentials, then adding and removing parts, bits of toasting, sound effects, and echo laden, often ghostly vocals, is EXACTLY what modern day remixers are doing with electronic dance music. Although most of the tracks on this collection have that very distinctively analogue sound ( "tape hiss" that can never be removed completely ) they sound incredibly fresh, and light years ahead of their time. Highly recommended for fans of dub reggae.

This set shows Tubby and Jah Screw mixing Roots Radics rhythms in a stark, dry, bass-heavy style. Judicious use of echo and the most subtly mutating snare-reverb effects of any Tubby production necessitate a careful listen that rewards with mindblowing intensity. If you like your dub busy with garish effects, this might not be the set for you. But if you crave mashing bass and dub as a fine art, this is as good as it gets.

ordinary early eighties dub from the master king tubby. not the best, but an enjoyable listen none the less.

king tubby is one of ma heroes when it comes to dub. been listening to dub for a little year and still haven't found tighter productions in this style of music.

With Tappa Zukie, King Tubby, Burning Spear and many others, you will not be disappointed. Its filled with the creme de la creme of heavy sounds of the reggae era, the "golden" age of reggae. Its a must have!!
