L.A. Guns

Great debut album from a grossly underrated band. L.A. Guns are one of the finest rock bands to come about in the last 30 years. Tracii Guns after creating and leaving Guns N Roses formed the even better rock mosnter LA Guns. Sure GNR were more popular because of one album, but LA Guns always had the better music over all and the best musicanship. Awesome rock n roll band, great debut CD.

LA Guns were about the closest of any of the hair metal bands to match the heights reached by Motley Crue without actually doing it. I always equated them with Ratt as a band that I enjoyed quite a bit at times but just never managed to cut through to full on megastardom. Which on the strength of this album is a bit unfair as speaking personally I'm far more likely to throw this on than either of the Crue albums Theatre of Pain or Girls Girls Girls. So trying to explain why those albums somehow sold more than the Guns early albums is beyond me.

This debut album by the good time Hollyrockers is a fairly simple affair. It's heads down party metal with liberal doses of stripper joint sleaze. Just the names of some of the songs tell you where this stretch limo of debauchery is heading - Shoot for Thrills, Hollywood Tease, Bitch is Back and the excellent Sex Action, darn near the bands flagship and rightly so. I mean once you've written lyrics like `Man she got style, boy she got sleaze' you've pretty much said it all. Definitely download or score a sample of this track as it will probably make up your mind.

With musicianship that relies more on gut instinct than high brow technical talent this album scoots along with hardly a let up. The production to me doesn't sound too dated, you can tell it wasn't recorded anytime post 2000 but that's fine, it doesn't sound creaky in the way you might get with some 70's albums.

This and Cocked and Loaded were LA Guns best albums because the stars were still shining brightly for them. From Hollywood Vampires onwards things weren't so crash hot and the mood is more down. But here, it's all party party party with as many girls as you can convince to come along for the ride.

This is my second copy of this album - I had a cassette 'back in the day'. Of course, I wore it out.
LA Guns was 'created' by Tracii Guns (original Guns of Guns n Roses) and fronted by Phil Lewis, whose slightly
accented (English) wailing makes them singularly different among their set (also comprised of GnR, Faster Pussycat, etc.) with a less polished look but similar 'sex, drugs, RnR' flavor to their music.

Although I never really got into their 'later' stuff (except for 'Ballad of Jayne' of course) this album has remained a 'must' whenever I need some hard, aggressive, screamy, FUN stuff...

solid rock album, plenty of blues influence, the original cast was always the best

The heavy metal band's 1988 stunning debut record. Saw L.A.Guns on this very tour. No doubt about it,this band had their bout with stardom for a few years there. Tracks that I remember digging the most were "Sex Action","One More Reason","Electric Gypsy"(always loved the MTV video for this song),the rocking "B**ch Is Back" and "Hollywood Tease". Couldn't help BUT to notice their Aerosmith and Motley Crue influences. Line-up: Phil Lewis-vocals, Traci Guns & Mick Cripps (does he still have his day job at the Cleopatra label?) - guitars, Kelly Nickels-bass and one-time W.A.S.P. member Steve Riley-drums. Something I wanted mention here, is that L.A.Guns is currently on a stateside tour of clubs. Their ads usually read, 'With Original Vocalist'. What some of you may not know is that their ORIGINAL...'original' vocalist was Paul Black,NOT Phil Lewis. So keep that in mind if you decided to check them out. A should-have, if you a fan of this genre.

Awesome rifftastic album, LA guns are way better than guns and roses, which Tracii Guns also helped create.

This album is on my short list of perfect albums. From beginning to end, it is flawless. Very similar to "Appetite for Destruction" by GNR, each song flows perfectly into the next and mixes just right. Only two hit songs on it "Ballad of Jayne" and "Never Enough" but the rest of it fits in between without missing a beat.

LA Guns were in the middle of the 80's LA metal scene but never got the recognition like many of their counterparts. It is somewhat mystifying why they never took off more than they did. Without them, there would be no Guns N Roses for one thing. But about their lack of success, it is somewhat odd that they didn't take off. They had a very charismatic look for the time, they had a bonafied hit single and a few minor ones as well. They were very solid musically, and had the street cred that alot of the hair bands at the time did not. So, it is a wonder why they are not among the heavy weights of the time. Nevertheless, Cocked & Loaded, their second album, is a very solid group of songs from top to bottom. Their biggest hit, "The Ballad Of Jayne" is here. I have to point out that this is the original version and the best one at that. It seems that the band has remixed this song and re-released it on subsequent releases and greatest hit compilations. But, the original is really magic here. It was the one time LA Guns seemed to capture lightning in a bottle. The rest of the album is an enjoyable listen. Alot of gritty rockers and some slower tunes, all very well written and a good listen each time. I liked Magdalaine alot, and think of that as a stand- out track, really mixing every great element of the band into one killer song. One thing I always liked about them, and something that was carried over into early GNR is that, although a metal band, if you break down their music they really have more in common with the Rolling Stones than they do with the typical metal bands of the day. Most of their music is acoustic guitar based and seemed to stem from a heavy blues influence. For that reason, they never seemed to quite fit in with the crowd, and that's probably what hurt them the most as far as commercial success. It's not a bad thing, though, and I am sure they would rather have their integrity in the end, which they most certainly do in my opinion. For this reason I hope more and more people will give them a chance and re-discover the greatness that was LA Guns.

ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FROM A GREAT BAND. THESE GUYS ROCK! STAND OUT TRACKS INCLUDE "NEVER ENOUGH","RIP AND TEAR" AND "THE BALLAD OF JAYNE" WHICH WAS AMAZINGLY A TOP 40 HIT. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RECORD TO ANY ROCKER.

This is the band's 2nd album. The album features guest appearances by Cheap Trick members Robin Zander and Rick Nielsen. Label - Vertigo / Polygram Records.

COMMENTS: Hands down, "Cocked & Loaded" is L.A.Guns' most polished and complete record... period. 14 tracks of rocking sleazy big aqua-net induced hair glam. One of their biggest hits and perhaps their most radio friendly tune, "The Ballad Of Jayne", is here... along with minor hits "Never Enough" and "Rip And Tear". Other highlights include "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Sleazy Come Easy Go", "Malaria", and "17 Crash". First and foremost this is a guitar album - this is Tracii Guns' band - and it shows. Great melodies, crunchy rhythms and ripping solos. With "Cocked & Loaded", L.A.Guns quickly established themselves as a band to be reckoned with on the Los Angeles late 80's music scene... right up there with the ranks of Motley Crue, Skid Row, Bullet Boys, Warrant, White Lion, Cinderella, Winger and Poison. Years later L.A.Guns is still hanging around (with several more albums under their belt), but none matched the songwriting and playing of this one (4.5 stars).

With the exception of the ballad Crystal Eyes this CD is not very good. Its strange how the band such a powerful song in Crystal Eyes and followed it up with such garbage. Its almost as if its two different bands playing.

Album number three and it was met with a shrug of the shoulders. Which is weird given that you'd think that their third album would of ripped to send them into the stratosphere alongside Motley Crue. I recall at the time that it was seen as a bit of an overcorrection from the simplistic party metal rock they'd been producing prior. Even band members conceeded this and talked about loosening up again on the next album during interviews. But by the time their next album arrived - 1994's Vicious Circle, the music world had changed.

But to the matter at hand, Hollywood Vampires. This album is produced by Michael James Jackson and it sounds a touch dour. It sounds like a band that was no longer thinking of bigger and better things. On the upside it sounds like professionals doing a job which isn't always a good thing for a party metal band but I do mean it as a compliment. My personal feelings towards this album are somewhat similar to how I view some Ratt product, a band who know that for whatever reason they just aren't going to be #1 and are somewhat resigned to that.

That actual songs are somewhat missing the sheen that made the first two discs such shiny pieces of fun. The fact that the first track is one of their best, most maudlin tunes is somewhat wasted because it is used as the opening track, which is where you'd think you'd put fun time rocker. It's actually a great song, just not what anyone wants to hear first up. Other tunes here reach the same heights such as Crystal Eyes, an excellent ballad given a second bite at the cherry on Vicious Circle and also used in the Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze flick Point Break. It really is a nice ballad from a band not known for them.

Party rockers are also in evidence such as Some Lie 4 Love and Kiss My Love Goodbye which are the two that stick out most in my mind. There are some filler tunes particularly towards the end of the album that tend to drag things down a touch and add to the `downer' vibe of the album.

This is an interesting album in that it shows the band stretching out a bit. It also shows that their songwriting cupboard was a bit bare. After this there would be a rather inglorious slide through the 90's. But if your a fan of their first two or in any way consider yourself an 80's afficianado you could do a lot worse than pick this up.

Phil Lewis's singing is just fantastic on this album and is a real hook. You really get to see how much talent he has. The songwriting is more varied and interesting than their previous albums. Just when you think it's going to get a bit too cheesy they bring you back to earth with some ballsy rawness. Some really nice key changes in here. The production and sound is perfect, without sounding overproduced. And of course Tracii's guitar just rocks.

Highlights are hard to pick as there are so many choices, but also it also stands very well as a complete album - the song order is spot on. "Over The Edge" is a slow, dark, introspective and very memorable track that really sucks you in. "Crystal Eyes" is a thoughtful and entrancing ballad. "Dirty Luv" and a few other rock tracks have that rude edge that you'd expect from a sleaze band, and contain highly catchy riffs and melodies ("Kiss My Love Goodbye", "My Koo Ka Choo" etc). There's some high tempo stuff too like "Snake Eyes".

It's a great balance of sound and feel in this album, although it might take a few listens to really start sinking in. It's one of the few albums I never seem to get sick of. It's my favourite L.A. Guns album and would be on my "10 CDs you can't live without" list. Highly recommended.

vampires is great, same great flavor of the first two albums, but a little more refined

I have seen LA Guns 4X live and have several cd's by them, but I never purchased this one for some reason. Let me tell you, this cd is good, real good. Phil Lewis and the band have more of a blues sound on this release, yet still has that sleaze rock element that sets Guns apart from most. I rank Vampires up there with Tales, Waking and the first release. One thing that I have noticed is that Lewis is really what seperates the LA Guns releases with him singing on it compared to the other two w/o him. Lewis is an integral part of the band and they all shine on Vampires.

Gets off to a great start with "It Don't Mean Nothin'" and right away you have a good guitar sound with Phil Lewis on vocals. That is a recipe for success. Overall the album is pretty good. The first L.A. Guns and Cocked and Loaded are still their two best though.

This could be the PERFECT glam metal album, in the way that it exemplifies everything good about the genre; but it's also, overall, just an incredible classic hard rock album.

Any LA Guns fan knows that Phil's voice, alone, can elevate material above the rest of what's out there, so, as long as Phil's around, they're at a good starting point. What amazed me about "Tales from the Strip" was that, not only did LA Guns NOT suffer musically from the departure of original guitarist Tracii Guns, but they actually seem so much stronger and maybe even a little more heartfelt in their delivery.

Fast-paced rockers like "It Don't Mean Nothing" & "Hollywood's Burning" build on the style of earlier work from "Cocked & Loaded" without sounding dated. "Skin" & "Original Sin" flat-out nail sleaze-rock. And I get chills everytime I hear "Electric Neon Sunset" & "Vampire" - bluesy, emotional tracks that I would consider their best.

It doesn't matter what's popular, what scene the band came from, what their 'look' is - "Tales From the Strip" is an amazing album that deserves to be heard; once heard it's tuly addictive!

this ladies and gentlemen is what rock n roll is all about. the band has really out done itself this time around. from phil singing like he's in his twenties again and stacy blades making that guitar scream (that's right, mr blades is a bad @ss) we have ourself one of their best albums. songs like: gypsy soul, original sin, crazy motorcycle and skin, show the band hitting on all strides. a definite winner, no doubt about it!

i've been a big L.A.Guns fan for a long time. they have some great songs & some pretty solid albums. but the fact is, this album stinks. the songs are awful. the production is bad & when Tracii left he definitely took the raw rock edge with him. it's really funny to hear Phil criticize other great bands (Alice In Chains, STP & so on) as of late. especially after this release. i don't know... it's just really hard for me to take a pouting middle aged man in a fishnet shirt seriously... whatever.

I grew up listining to late 60's and 70's rock, the Who, the Stones, the Godz, Aerosmith, Yes, Bad Company, etc., so I did not expect to like this CD. I was familiar with a 70's band called GIRL whose lead singer was Phil Lewis. While browsing the racks at my local music store, I noticed Phil's name on the back of this L.A. Guns CD and, curious to hear what he sounds like today, purchased the CD. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised. This CD rocks. Thundering drums and plenty of catchy vocals and driving guitar riffs. Straight forward, fun, hard driving rock that gets you moving. Highly recomended.

Released to almost no fanfare at all during the shoegazing years this album sounds like a great band that for some reason is having trouble getting the show out of second gear. Tracii Guns and Phil Lewis have a certain chemistry that at worst usually scored them a certain sleaze rock charm and their use of simple song structures, a sort of everyman party metal schtick, meant they connected to the inner dufus of their listeners. But on this album it just didn't seem to be clicking, perhaps showing via recorded wares that the chemistry between them had run it's course.

As to the album itself there are some curios on hand. Firstly it sounds quite clean and clear and not dour at all like their previous Hollywood Vampires. There is a reprise of one of the best songs off that album, Crystal Eyes. Which indicates to me that the band figured they had a hit on their hands and should give the thing a second shot. Exactly what Europe did with their track Open Your Heart by putting it on Wings of Tomorrow and Out Of This World.

A number of the rockers on this album feel much like 80's music updated with 90's production values and that's a good thing. But what is interesting is that some of the sentiments here also sound harsher, more metal. The delivery of Face Down, for instance, should certainly interest fans who grew up on Sex Action way back when. The touch of maudlin that the band first really exhibited on Hollywood Vampires is continued in tunes such as Long Time Dead.

I guess with the parting of ways between Guns and Lewis this could be considered somewhat of a last hurrah. If so it's not the bands best album. But it does contain elements of their different moods and show them capable of adding some new aspects to their music and so is a valid enough purchase for any hardcore LA Guns fan from the 80's who gave up the faith.

This album shows why L.A. Guns were ust as good as Guns N Roses. Awesome album, hard and heavy Guns style. Best rock n roll out there. Sickly underrated!!

This is one of the studio albums I don't have by L.A. Guns, (the other being American Hardcore, for obvious reasons). I got A Night On The Strip (LIVE) for the reason that there are a few songs from this CD on it...still kicking myself for not purchasing this CD when it first came out in '95 I believe it was. Would be great if they would reissue, remaster, add some bonus cuts...whatever, with all the new albums they have had out lately like Waking The Dead, Man On The Moon you would think this one would deserve some notice also. Hopefully they will do it right, not re-recording, or re-releasing another greatest hits, but rather just remastering this one for long time fans who have overlooked this gem.

Let Mr. PHIL LEWIS take YOU on a journey! You may not want to return!!!! ha ha (I love this cd) EVERY single track is rockn' and really really makes U feel the music, keeps you wanting more and just keep rolling along on this magical music journey! After a three year hiatus, the LA Guns returned to the scene in 1994 for their fourth album "Vicious Circle." The musical landscape had seen a major change between the release of "Hollywood Vampires" (1991) and "Vicious Circle." The LA Guns brand of sleazy pop-metal that had so defined the band's first three albums was completely passé by the mid 90s. In 1994 it was all about grunge and alternative rock.

Pop metal bands who enjoyed success in the late 80s and early 90s generally responded to the public's change in taste in one of two ways. They either lived in a vacuum, acting as though Nirvana and Pearl Jam had never taken place (Vince Neil) or they embraced a pseudo grunge/alternative sound in an attempt to modernize (Motley Crue). The LA Guns opted for a third option; keep the main elements of their sound but make a very aggressive album.

So what you have with "Vicious Circle" is a 80s pop-metal band, a product of the sunset strip, trying to fit in to the alt-rock 90s without selling out. "Vicious Circe" succeeds in this attempt. The band still encompasses their signature Aerosmith/Zeppelin riffs, melody and sing along choruses, only the band eschews much of the sleaze that had been a major element of their first three albums. The band also sounds far more aggressive, but without sounding forced, a problem that pretty much ruined the band's next release "American Hardcore" (1996). Although the songs aren't quite as catchy or memorable as those on the first three albums, the band hadn't sounded this edgy or hungry since their self-titled debut (1988). Guitarist Tracii Guns came up with a batch of great riffs that leaves the listener feeling fully satisfied.

"Vicious Circle" would prove to be the end of an era. It was the band's last album with its (mostly) original lineup until 2001's "Man on the Moon." Phil Lewis, (vocals) Mick Cripps (guitar) and Kelly Nickels (bass) would not return for the follow-up album. Only Tracii Guns would be back for "American Hardcore." The band's usual drummer Steve Riley sat out "Vicious Circle" and is replaced by a number of studio players (he would be back for all subsequent LAG releases).

Although the LA Guns released a fine album, "Vicious Circle" unfortunately went nowhere commercially. After the release of Nirvana's "Nevermind" the line was drawn in the sand. With the emergence of grunge and alternative rock, many great bands had their careers torpedoed. The LA Guns were unfortunately one of grunge rock's victims. This is a shame, because while "Vicious Circle" isn't a masterpiece, it's still a better than average rock album that deserves to be heard.

If you are a fan of the band and missed "Vicious Circle" the first time around, try giving it a second chance today.

It's kind of amusing that the too often criticized 20th Century Masters series has produced what is easily the best Greatest Hits package for the legendary Hollywood glam band L.A. Guns. This has a lot to do with the fact that even though there are umpteen different L.A. Guns compilations on the market, the 20th Century Masters collection is the only one to feature digitally remastered versions of the original songs. The others all seem to focus on live versions or remakes with later band lineups.

The 20th Century Masters: Best of L.A. Guns album gets right to the point, serving up a dozen tracks from the band's first three (and best known) albums. Radio/MTV staples Sex Action, Electric Gypsy, and the Ballad of Jayne are all present, as are some lesser known (but still great) tracks like Crystal Eyes and Over the Edge. The songs have all been digitally remastered and sound terrific, especially when you compare these tracks to the ones on the original albums. L.A. Guns was one of the Hollywood scene's quintessential bands, and this affordable compilation provides the band's biggest hits with the best sound at a low price. What are you waiting for?

I've never owned an L.A. Guns CD but have loved the singles that were released back then. I have grown to like all of the songs on the CD, some of which I never even knew they sang. I will have to look into other CD's by them and maybe purchase.

This is the first LA GUNS CD I've ever listened, and wow! These guys totally ROCKED! Underrated but they werent bad, their songs sound cool like Electric Gypsy, One More Reason, and the anthemic Ballad of Jayne, Crystal Eyes and It's Over Now. For those who were fans of the 80's metal bands, this CD pretty fits your collection.

The Millennium Collection Is Massive! LA GUNS is so very talented, Phil Lewis is truley a VAMPIRE as well as the other magnificiently talented music boys! All tracks Rock and really make u feel the music and the lyrics! I LOVE where it takes, ME!! (FACE DOWN) will make u beg for more --- great track! Im a huge L.A.Guns fan and frankly im dissapointed with all of their recent "Greatest Hits" for 2 reasons.
1.Their are TOO MANY OF THEM
2.They're not original recordings
Now I understand that L.A.Guns were trying to "up" there original songs by re-recording them and I respect that, but they did it to many times, just look at how many they've came out with:

the thing that makes this best of better then the rest is this one is all original recordings, and im sorry but id rather hear some kick-ass original recordings then hear a band keep trying and trying to re-recording them and not do a very good job, this is the greatest hits you should get!

One of the best releases from the Guns, period. Their newest album "Tales from the Strip" rivals this one, but Waking the Dead is a masterpiece in its own form. There are some godly riffs from Tracii, killer vocals from everyone's favorite frontman Philly Lewis, and all the tracks are fantastic. The songs are very well produced and the bands' songwriting majesty really shows through on this one.

In conclusion...Killer album. I hope the L.A. guns make tons of money of this album and maybe theyll even be...LOADED.

Traci, you helped write this cd, you play lead guitar on it and then when the Guns went on tour, you quit them for Brides. F Traci Guns. This cd is excellent. Its LA Guns brand of metal, raw, yet produced w/ class. Oh and by the way, Stacey Blades does real well as THE LA Guns guitar player, he outperforms Traci, has a better demeanor and is a showman. Waking the Dead is another fine release by LA Guns.

As simple as this. If you like killer riffs and straight-from-the-hip rock, this album rocks from start to finish.
An unexpected gem this late in the game for the real Gunners!!!

I'm A New Guns Fan,So I Dont That Many Albums.My Favorite Song On The Cd Is Ok, Lets Roll.That Song And The Balad Justs Kicks Ass . Overall Its An Awesome Album I Would Recommend It To Any One

With this album, L.A.Guns takes you all the way back to the way it should be with Rock being king. After a huge slump, L.A.Guns now has a reason to celebrate with this album, This album was great when I first heard it and its still kicking ass 2 years later, I recommend this album for L.A.Guns fans and Rock N'Roll fans every where!

This is an interesting cd for L.A. Guns fans. It's all demo versions of the songs that ended up on the first record and several more that did not make it onto that record. The sound quality is pretty good and some of the tracks are significantly different than what ended up on their self titled debut. It's definitely worth buying.

This album is a rock N roll mater work. Tracii Guns belts ot amazing riffs, and power, being the guitar lord he is. Awesome return album!

After going through numerous lineup changes throughout the latter half of the 90s, the (mostly) original lineup of the LA Guns reformed for 2001's "Man in the Moon." It was singer Phil Lewis and guitarist Mick Cripps first album with the band since 1994's "Vicious Circle."

Released in 2001, a full decade after the whole sunset strip scene ceased to be relevant, the LA Guns act as though grunge, post-grunge, and nu-metal never took place. The band pretty much pick up where they left off last time around with "Vicious Circle," only the band embraces more of their signature pop-metal sound that they had abandoned since "Hollywood Vampires (1991). Guitarist Tracii Guns still has his chops and can write mean riffs, and Phil Lewis sounds as good as ever. The band's music still encompasses the same themes as the LA Guns of the late 80s; only now, almost self-consciously aware that they are middle aged, sound more refined, more mature. The songwriting throughout the disc is mostly quite strong, with the title track, "Spider's Web" and "Scream" being particular standouts. The rest of the album is strong, although not quite as memorable as the self-titled album (1988), "Cocked and Loaded," (1989) or "Hollywood Vampires."

If you are a fan of the LA Guns and/or pop metal in general, this album is recommended.

After a 7-year slump, L.A.Guns has finally given me a reason to purchase their ablums. I really missed Phil Lewis on their last 2 releases (American Hardcore & Shrinking Violet) and I know L.A.Guns were hurting without him to. On this album, Phils voice isnt quite what it was back in the 80's, but atleast he's back. This album has its high points and its low points, it seems like they really tried for the first few songs but as the album progressed its like they stopped trying but overall its a good album, not great but good. Recommended for L.A.Guns fans.

"Man in the Moon" is an awesome track, and I play it over and over and over and..well you get it, and track 2, "Beautiful" is nicely done and I enjoy it lots. And then that's it. Its nice to have Phil back in the band, there is no other vocalist for L.A. Guns than him, but I'm so glad Waking The Dead is out. I got this album based on two things..It's L.A. Guns and Phil Lewis is back, but they just dont make it work like they do on Waking. The tracks on here are just boring. Absolutely boring. "Man In the Moon" I can't say enough good things about it its just one my favourite all time songs. But I'm disappointed with the rest. And I feel bad for it. I just couldnt get it in to it. If anyone out there feels the way I do, you will be happy with Waking the Dead, thier 2002 release. Stick with that and other L.A. Guns CD that have Phil on it. May i suggest the wicked Vicious Circle??

If you're a longtime L.A. Guns fan (like me) or a new fan, I think you'll really enjoy this CD...although it sounds slightly different than their former albums, there's a real great vibe to this one. The songs seem a little more deeper and heart-felt than former albums, but are no less artistic and hard-hitting. Songs like "Man In The Moon," "Hypnotized," and "Turn It Around" promise that L.A. Guns will continue to develop well into the future..."Spider's Web" and "Scream" are a total treat for long-starved fans. Phil Lewis' vocals are intense. Steve Riley does some awesome drum work and Tracii's guitar licks are smoldering. Mick Cripps serves up some pretty hot guitar as well. Muddy, featured on bass, does an excellent job. Although he's not the same type of player as Kelly Nickels, it's a tight rhythm section and the album sounds amazing all around. Gilby Clarke produced it and the chemistry shows. Spend a few bucks and add this to your collection, or kick yourself later for missing out.
