This is probably one of the better albums of the decade so far; most likely top 25 for sure. The 5th track: "All My Friends" is a brilliant 7 1/2 minute epic that, by itself, is worth the price of the album. It does have a weak moment(s) in the title track "Sound of Silver" and to some extend "Watch the Tapes" which are both decent songs but have a tough act to follow after the genius of track 5 and the impressive track 6. I recommend this album for sure. I also recommend that you listen with head phone as you'll pick up on much of James Murphy's subtleties.

I was skeptical of this band a while now, being weary of all things hipster and hyped. I love good electronic music though, be it ambient, idm, 80's style dance. As with many trends, I jump on the bandwagon a bit late, but I'm so glad I didn't miss this one. Luckily my local library had this and I took it out and gave it a few listens and was immediately engaged. Every so often a release drops and makes your ears perk. This is definitely one of 'em. From start to finish it's a gem. Growing up in the 80's, being big into New Order, Human League and the underground dance music of the time, this disc gave me chills, it was so dead on as far as getting that special sound that so many imitate but fail at. this is a band who KNOWS. At the same time, this is a very current release, and in my opinion, will be a classic from this decade. It's tough to pick favorites--the music and lyrics are all very good. "Someone Great" is beautiful and reflective, in the best way, and "Get Innocuous" is a storming, strobe and smoke opener with Enoesque vocals. "Time To Get Away" is an extremely catchy, dance-funk number reminding me of Gang Of Four, as well as some other releases from back in the day. "North American Scum" has some of the freshest lyrics I've heard from anyone in a while and is another that will have you dancing, if you know what's good for you.

I don't want to label this band as a "retro" outfit. I see them more as a group who loves and knows a particular era (or several for that matter) and assimilate that love and knowledge into the now. I plan on picking up all their stuff (just heard "45:33" and thoroughly enjoyed it). I just hope they keep dropping more good stuff like this (and maybe tour again for those who were late to the table).

I'm by no means an expert on how to appreciate music, but I must say I was really impressed with Sound of Silver's quality. There were a few songs that I enjoyed from LCD Soundsystems first release, but those took a bit of time for me to get into. Sound of Silver got me right from the start in a way I haven't experienced from a CD for some time. Normally I expect to have to give some time for a CD to grow on me, but this one didn't require any extra effort. Having said that, I know a few of the songs will not have a great deal of staying power in my "everyday playlist", but enough of them do that I would strongly recommend this CD. "Get Innocuous!", "North American Scum", and "All My Friends" all deserve the positive attention they've been given and I know I will continue to enjoy them for years to come.

The third track, "North American Scum," will have you jumping up and down and chanting like an English football hooligan. And the forth song, "Someone Great," will bore its way into your subconscious like a mole. But while there are truly some catchy songs here, I have to admit sometimes it does get a bit too repetitive with the Casio-like keyboards and early 90s electronic effects, sounds I know far too well from a misspent youth. This is still worth getting, though.

I discovered LCD Soundsystem last year at the Arcade Fire concert in Seattle. This is great music for working out, listening loud with your headphones on, or just for playing while relaxing at home. Great album.

I just recently read "Bob"'s comments above (the first available) and found them to be quite interesting if not justified. It seems that he has taken the opportunity to terrorize a songmaker that is gifted with complex style and listenability. Well, all is fair in reviews I guess, however I believe this CD deserves a rebuttal.
Mostly, this disk has fantastic tunes, sounds, and interjected words. I don't think its the greatest disk ever made - yet it stands out as an impressive collection of wonderful ideas. If you are into punk rock and electronic music it might make for a good listen (at least for the first 20 or so times).

Bob - keep listening to those wonderful other bands you like so much.

Which is true, but it's even better when they make it their own and not just simply recycle the same beats over to us as if we wouldn't know. Being heavily influenced by some of the best stuff out there, LCD Soundsystem has created a very broad album in the fact that it encompasses many different genres while still staying within one track!

There's nothing marvelously deep or enthralling here, just some really good fun, making beats and dancing too them. And that's how this album should be taken as. You want to have fun and you want to dance? Throw in some LCD! There's nothing here you really can't groove, jam, and rock out too. It's got it all, I wouldn't be surprised if you found these tracks playing in all kinds of different discos.

I myself being more of a rock fan, really enjoy the friendly usability of this album. I'm not completely ignorant on what is what when it comes to dance pop, electro, or synth pop and all that. I have my share of albums on all sorts of genres. And surprisingly this album will be one of them that bridges many of them.

Highly recommended if you're into grooving, feel loose and just want to chill or have a party at your flat. After it's over, you can put on some Daft Punk, and then they'll really be playing at your house!

Though the 2000s have suffered from a lack of decent electronic/dance-style music, LCD Soundsystem has come out with a surprisingly good collection of songs of that genre. The songwriting and the music come across as incredibly confident, for this being their first album. James Murphy's vocals have a sort of coolness (and even a hint of sarcasm) that really strengthens the album. Not for one moment do they give off the impression of a mediocre, unpolished group.

Many of the songs are long in length (many are around 5 minutes, with one going on for nearly 12), partly because of the alternative-electronic genre they are a part of. Despite the number of songs and their length, the songs don't come across as repetitive. The longest song is even entirely instrumental, something rarely seen from modern bands. There isn't the "filler material" usually present in most bands' albums, since all of the songs are listenable and each have their own expressive quality. The first disc flows together well from start to finish and the second disc is composed mainly of longer and more dance-oriented songs.

One thing I noticed is how similar James Murphy's delivery of vocals are to Mark E. Smith of The Fall. They both have the same sort of inflection in their singing style, though Murphy is American and Smith is British. Then again, many artists of the present have been influenced by (and thus sometimes imitate) artists of the past. The similarity isn't so strong as to overwhelm the music, but is definitely easy to detect in certain songs.

It's been paid for by Nike to be some sort of running aid. Now I don't know about the everyday person but I like a little distraction while running. Don't get me wrong this is a beautiful composition ,though it does have repeating material from his last album it is presented in a new and relaxed way. The whole album is just so relaxing and gorgeously made. It starts off really slow but picks up into some of the best beats James Murphy has ever been apart of. The extra songs are neat but not really necessary, Freak Out being the most fun.

If you are already aware of LCD soundsystem then you either already have this or are just taking the steps to get it. If you are new to LCD Soundsystem then you need to be aware of the following

I really thought that "Sounds of Silver" was an interesting and exciting CD. So I went ahead and bought this thinking it might be more of the same, or at least fun, considering the Amazon review mentions it being a "rave-up" .... but it's really really boring. Start out kinda slow...middle of the CD, it's a little faster but still kinda slow, then slows down for the ending. I felt like I had bought a really generic mix of songs. Not for everyone!

James Murphy seems to think so and as LCD Soundsystem he is proving it. This album takes the dance snippets from Sound of Silver and builds on them to create one long, very disco-ey, very blues-ey, no singing dance track. That's not to say that there are no speaking, just not singing.

Once you start listening you can't stop. It sucks you in. It's like background music but not so background that you can't enjoy it. It allows you to focus on anything you're doing while enjoying some great dance music.

This is definitely a must own for any dance or electronic music fan.

Sounds warm and analogue, not stuffy and not serious. I'm listening to it now on Rhapsody. It is [updated] disco. But it seems affectionate, even fun, like playing with your fuzzy, clever robot kitty. I can see how it would be nice for running [or certain household or creative tasks] as it does engage that certain part of the brain so that the rest of you can focus. Thematically there's a fair amount going on. That said, it won't quite reward active listening. I'm at 14 minutes and so far I'm good; not bored. At 17 minutes it turns funky, at 19 it turns psy. Dag, I'm liking this. It has definitely suspended my disbelief. This definitely has a lot of personality and is cheeky sort of like Basement Jaxx, The Orb, or Yello [at 29 min it reminds me a little of Yello, in a good way]. Mmmm. Chunky. Okay I'll stop now. I know this review was trippy but hopefully it does sort of give you an idea of what to expect until a good reviewer comes along. Bye.

This album really feels like a musical journey across a variety of styles and instrumentation. I can't say that I know the story behind the album or what influenced it, but I can tell you I like it.

I kind of just bought it on a whim and a good hunch. the only 2 tracks that i knew before buying this (along with Sound of Silver and their Self titled) were "Losing my edge" and "Yeah (pretentious mix)". With the exception of "hippie priest Bum out" this is one 45+ minute track that blends together 5 to 7 songs you would find on any other average cd. While there are alot of bright spots to be found on this one huge track, I really think they kick it up a notch around minute 17 and from there seamlessly span across different styles of dance music. Some of it very Herbie Hancock influenced, spacey techno, disco heavy Fat bass and then some. the last 10 minutes are like a subtle come down, but not much going on but a transcending synth pad.

so really, you're getting a good solid 35 minute musical journey that is upbeat, fun, and down right enjoyable. if you like LCD Soundsystem, Electronica, or dance pop with a nostalgic feel and modern approach, buy this album.
