'The Blackening'(MH's 6th studio album) hits you right in the face and doesn't stop. A step in a different direction is what Robb & the boys have accomplished with 'The Blackening'. An unrelenting thrash attack with hooks, killer riffs and great arrangements. Machine Head has really stepped it up on this one....far more then what they had accomplished with 'Through The Ashes Of Empires' which also stands as a metal masterpiece. The main difference between the two is the distinctive sound of......Thrash. Incorporating their roots (which are 80's Bay Area thrash) Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel have come full circle. Once before bandmates in the thrash group Violence, Robb and Phil are back with a true old school dual guitar attack that doesn't sound dated in the least bit. Agressive and exciting are there soloing efforts.....back and forth between the two.........really awesome stuff. Many influences are heard throughout the album which include Metallica,Exodus, Slayer, Black Sabbath,Pantera and Iron Maiden. And the lyrics are well written with many words of our dismal future. Top notch metal is what you are going to get with MH's 'The Blackening'. An album that exceeds 60 minutes in length on only 8 tracks.......wow.

Now for the special edition.....many complain(as I do) when the rec. execs. reissue albums that were released only a short time ago. Clearly to capitalize on a success. Some are not worth re-buying ie. Life Of Agony's 'A River Runs Red' (top shelf edition). But some are as in the case of 'The Blackening'.
On the first disc you get bonus tracks from the Kerrang tributes, Iron Maiden's 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' and Metallica's 'Battery'. Both very well performed being down-tuned ofcourse. So this adds a different flavor.
But the DVD is where you get your bang for your buck.Clocking in at over 2 hours worth of live performances, videos (Halo,Now I Lay Thee Down,Asthetics Of Hate) along with the making of each video.And ending with a 25 min. doc on the making if the album itself.
Well worth picking up.

Although this is a double dip it is one of an album that will go down in history as one of the best in metal. The cd has all the songs from the original release and as every Machine Head fan knows they are awesome. Although this time it comes with 2 extra tracks on it. Hallowed Be Thy Name by Iron Maiden and Battery by Metallica from the Metal Hammer tributes and they are great additions to this already perfect cd. They cover the songs perfectly while giving them a little Machine Head flavor. Great first disc.

But the main reason to get this is the bonus DVD. They don't give you a half hearted effort as most bands do when they re release an album. This DVD is stacked with great performances. All pro shot and incredible sound quality. Although they are all great the 2 that stand out are 2 that not many have seen. First is them playing Clenching The Fists Of Dissent, Now I Lay Thee Down, and Halo From their headlining performance at the Full Force Festival. The quality and intensity of the band are here in full force :) . They are perfect and this is the best sounding of the performances. Next are 4 songs from the Burn My Eyes 10th anniversary show which is incredible as well. They play A thousand lie, The Rage To Overcome, Death Church, and Blood for Blood perfectly and only make you hope the whole show will be released in the future. This is by far the holy grail of the DVD but there is so much more. They show them playing Imperium and Old from last years Donnington Download Festival which was amazing. Most publications considered them the best performance over the 3 day event and one even included it as the 7th best performance in the history of metal and that's no lie. The last of the live footage is them at the Rock in Rio Festival. They play Aesthetics of Hate and Davidian to perfection in front of and enormous crowd. I'm in awe of how incredible the live footage is here. This alone would make it worth it but there's more. A great little documentary on the making of The Blackening which is great as it shows them arranging the songs and explaining the concept behind the killer artwork of the album and the inspiration behind the songs. Another nice bonus. They finish off with 3 videos from the album which are Aesthetics of Hate(which I was at the Norva the night they filmed the live part of it), Now I Lay Thee Down, and Halo and teh making of each of the videos. An awesome bonus to the already classic cd. Metal fans, Machine Head fans. This is a no brainer. While I'm not big on re releasing albums Machine head, who have always been a fans band make this re issue more than worth it. The only thing I can hope for is in the future to release a stacked DVD with the complete sets from these festivals and the BME show. Go now, support this incredible band. You won't be disappointed as the cd is perfect and the DVD is over the top incredible. It's worth every penny. So I highly recommend any metal fan pick this up. You most definitely won't regret it. An awesome, inspiring, release!

Yes, we've heard all the hype before. But once in a while, an album comes along and just grabs you by the throat and will not let go until you finally pick up a copy. Then that copy becaome part of the rotation in your music libary, never being put away.
This CD happens to be one of them.
Now before I get into the review, I am a Machine Head fan, and I do have all of their albums, from the well done "Burn My Eyes" to the awful "Supercharger". I am pretty biased about their music, so no matter how bad (Or how good) an album they make, I'm gonna listen to it and make my own judgement.
But this CD brought me back to why I love their music in the first place.
Right from the opening track "Clenching The Fists Of Dissent", This CD sucked me in a roller coaster of brutal, loud, yet well written and melodic sound, drawing out an emotion from me that hard to describe. The closest I can describe is like going to your favorite band's concert for the first time.
I got sucked in by tracks like "Beautiful Morning", "Aesthetics Of Hate", "Slanderous", even "Now I lay Thee Down" and I'm not too big on songs similar to that track. I found myself moshing at my job while listening to the entire album.
The mixing is perfectly done, Rob Flynn really shines in this CD, but it's just not him. Phil Demmel, Adam Duce, and Dave McClain also throw their weight into the songs, blending together as a whole, but yet standing out individually. You don't hear that very often. The last time I heard that was on Slayer's "Reign In Blood", Pantera's "Vulgar Display Of Power", and the late Chuck Schuldiner's band "Control Denied".
Granted, the album is rather long, but so was Metallica's "And Justice For All". A couple of the tracks are over 10 minutes long, and the Album itself is about or a little over 65 minutes long, making it seem like an "Epic" type of album.
You get an idea of what each track is about by listening yourself, especially "A Farewell To Arms", and the forementioned tracks, "Aestheics Of Hate", "Slanderous", and of course a personal favorite, "Wolves".
Very few Metal Albums deserve the praise it gets, this deserves more. You know this is something good when it beats out a few Post-Hardcore bands for "Album of the year" on Metal Hammer magazine.
Recently, Machine re-released The blackening with two bonus tracks "Battery" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name", a couple of covers from Metallica and Iron Maiden. Nice choices if you ask me. Those two covers alone make this CD much more enjoyable.
But this CD itself is worth buying. I highly recommend it.

The Blackening is the album the metal community has been begging for. Always been a big MH fan, but this is by and far their masterpiece. I do recommend the special edition with the two cover tracks and DVD. Well worth the extra coin. Any metal fan should not be without this CD in their collection. MH fan or not, this could be the most important metal album of this generation. Yeah..........it's that good. I raise my glass and "clinched fist of dissent" to Machine Head!!!!!

Machine Head have had a bit of an up-and-down career, with a few missteps along the way, but when they're firing on all cylinders, you better get out of their way. Leader and vocalist Robb Flynn, possibility the angriest metaller out there right now, is a superb songwriter, which is too often overlooked in metal circles, with many outfits getting attention with unimaginative repetitive riffs and singers who sound like they're suffering from a bad case of irritable bowel syndrome.
Flynn does his share of growling, but also provides clear vocals and harmonies, which add the one element modern metal needs the most, dynamics. Not that "The Blackening" is a wimped out affair. This slab is heavy - like the Titanic sinking in your living room heavy. The guitar work though, is innovative, uses lots of cool bends ala Tony Iommi and some of the best lead work out there.
Every track is great, but a few really stick out, which is no small feat in a CD of such strong material. "Halo", "Slanderous" and "Wolves" are personal favorites. If Machine Head keep this level of metal up, they will be almost untouchable. Give me Robb Flynn over the over blown and bloated Metallica any day.

This album can only be fully described in two words "EPIC MASTERPIECE" and if you love metal this is a must buy trust me I thought nothing would ever get close to my all time favorite album megadeth's "rust in peace" but that changed after i heard the blackenings first track its 10 minutes of raw heavy metal power.This album is full of energy and amazing technicality "the blackening" is probably the only album I would consider "equal" to rust in peace wich is saying A LOT!!Seriously if you like heavy metal(and thinks mainstream music like hip hop and my chemical romance is a talentless BS affair)any kind like death black metal or even rapcore and nu metal I really recommend this album since I am a huge children of bodom,chimaira,megadeth and even rage against the machine fan."The blackening" is a throwback to the times when metal thrived and with raw energy power and relentless solos were praised by the mainstream unlike now when "50 cent" has "talent" and creating a crappy song in your dirty brocken keyboard like "sowja boy" can throw you to the top unlike actually having something called "TALENT" and creating something "EPIC" and "CLASSIC" like "The blackening" Machinehead you have all my respect.

"The Blackening" is an epic masterpiece of metal music. It pounds throughout the entire hour, very heavy. By the time the CD is done, I'm always tired because my adrenaline is going strong the whole time I'm listening to it. Awesome, awesome album. This is their best work, and one of the top 3 albums I've ever listened to. Go buy it as soon as you can.

This is an amazing album, i live in the UK and i got a copy shipped all the way from the US because the UK version doesn't have "seasons wither" on it. It was definetly worth the 3 week wait just for that song! The songs are all insanely heavy and the melodies provide a really nice contrast. One of their best ever albums.

"Through the Ashes of Empires", is Machine Heads fifth studio album, and after a the dismal reviews of "Supercharger" from both fans and reviewers, maybe the band finally heard some of the negitive, and decided to get back on track to just playing straight up Metal. Now, I always thought that Machine Head was a Nu Metal band, but with their own signiture sound, because when I use the term Nu Metal, and use it to describe pretty much alternitive or industrial Metal. Some use the term as to label any Heavy Metal that is popular or radio friendly, but i just simplety call that generic or recycled nu metal. I explain this so Machine Heads dont get offended that I used the term to describe them even on the first two albums (which I know are fan favorites, including myself) So on the the review of "Through the Ashes of Empires" Does the band finally get back on track here? Well yes and no. Its stronger song wise then "Burning Red" and obviously anything is better then "Supercharger", but it still has some annoying poppy/generic nu metal riffs and vocal that I cant stand, and wish the band would just abandon. Maybe I am being to critical, as some reviewers call this a return to form. YES, I agree to a point, its nice to have the band getting back on track, but they still have some work to do. Reviewers tend to get mad when others write such things as "this isnt "Burn my eyes" or "the more things change, so get over it" I myself understand that, and no album by the band might ever match those, but I want to see an effort to get back to that time period, build on it, and abandon the whole pop/generic/nu/new/crapola sound (: They might not release another masterpiece, but at least try. Still, this isnt a bad album, and even with some faults its the best thing they did since "The More Things Change" Out of eleven tracks, I love six of them. Thats not to bad. Some of the others are OK, worth a listen or two, and two of them really suck, I just hit skip. I good effort here, above average Machine Head album, but there is still some work to do. ENJOY

I think this is the best Machine Head album in a long long time. Maybe The More Things Change is their most known album but this one is almost that great. It has their -good- new sound. Powerfull without the Nu Metal Supercharge style.

More than a review(cause u dont need a review of this one, just hear it)I will like to say to the young ones that this was what the old school metal used to lack of, the FAT guitars, the round body, and this album has it, thats what makes it so incredible for me, sth I was wanting a long time ago, fat sound with speed and double bass thrashy riffs, and why does this album sounds so old school missed thrash metal? easy!, the prescence of Rob Flynn's VIO-LENCE guitar mate, Phil Demmel, I love Vio-lence and having both in the same band reminds me of what it was back in the day... unbeatable!

I liked this album on the first listen, the first 3 tracks blew me away, but it took me a while to get into the rest, but I find that always happens with really good CDs.

The musicianship, songwriting and lyrics on this album are simply top notch. This is what professional musicians should be making, real music!

From the epic opener 'Imperium' all the way through to 'Descend the Shades of Night' Machinehead show you how to make crushing, melodic, inspirational metal!

These guys absolutely rocked me live (my ears were ringing for 3 days!)

if vio=lence was not hard enough for you Rob found a way to make his riffs heavier than hell.drawling from many sources like(pantera,biohazard,sepultra& newer bands mixed with the old school thrash know how they created a cd that they themselfs couldn't touch the power of for ten years it took phil demmel (vio-lence) to push them to the next level of fury a more mainlining thrash vibe on second guitar.

This album is praised a lot by mainstream metal listeners but is lambasted heavily by many a metal elitist, and for good reason. This album is truly awful.

For one, stop calling this junk thrash!! Thrash has jagged (often fast, occasionally mid-paced) guitar riffs and fast paced drums, "Burn My Eyes," however, lacks both. "Blood for Blood" jacks up the speed in both the guitars and drums and would be a good song if it weren't for the silly "bad boy" vocals from Rob Flynn. The drums can be decent at times, but the guitars are what really hurt this album. This album is chocked full of worthless groove because it's easy to make simple chugging riffs that are "heavy," it requires effort to write solid riffs that are actually aggressive. Also, as stated before, Rob Flynn's laughable rap metal styled monosyllabic vocals really bring this album down along with the guitars. The lyrics don't help this album, either. It's the cliché themes of respect and being tough, nothing new and nothing good to begin with. This sounds like Pantera's "Vulgar Display of Power" (another awful album) with more appeal to the wiggers because of the inclusion of more "tough guy" imagery taken from the hardcore and rap scenes. In fact, I might even call this "wigger metal" because this is slow "heavy" music screaming "yo," "respect," and "muthaph**ah" while the fans jump to this slow, boring stuff. I listen to metal to get away from that tripe, why would I want a "metal" album full of it then?!! When I listen to any metal album, I don't want to groove with the music, I want to rage!!

"Davidian," like much of the album, is full of groove, but is somewhat redeeming because it moves along at a nice pace. "Blood for Blood," as stated before, is the best song (though not quite good) on the album because it sounds somewhat like a proper thrash tune. "I'm Your God Now" sounds like a rejected Nirvana song (very grunge-oriented), the rest of the album is that putrid groove-laden "muthaph**ah attitude" all around. In short, "Burn My Eyes" is heavy for the sake of being heavy, tries to cover up the lack of true aggression by packing it with the "bad boy" vocals that would certainly appeal to any misfit 15 year-old who thinks he's the toughest guy in the school because he stole some kid's lunch money.

Many fans call this album the best Machine Head has to offer, some others say "The Blackening." If this is the best Machine Head has to offer, I don't even want to think about the "bad" albums like "The Burning Red" and "Supercharger." I gave this one a 9% because "Davidian" and "Blood for Blood" have some forgiving moments, but the rest is unbearable.

Listen to Rob Flynn's first band, Vio-Lence; preferably the albums "Eternal Nightmare" and "Oppressing the Masses," both of which wipe the floor with any MH album. For other REAL thrash albums that totally rip BME to pieces, check out Pestilence's "Malleus Malleficarum," Morbid Saint's "Spectrum of Death," Kreator's "Endless Pain," Sodom's "Persecution Mania," and Hypnosia's "Extreme Hatred" for starters. Unless if you like metal that's slow, groovy, and full of fake aggression, don't even think about listening to this.

Finally, Flynn is desecrating the name of the classic Deep Purple album with this horrid band.

This has got to be as life changing a band as any like metallica ever was from Master of Puppets to the Justice for All Album. The guitar solos are awesome - the riffs are simple but cool. The one true album that sets the standard in top class Metal.

If you don't have it get it for your collection.

If you have never heard anguish and feeling in a band..... Listen to MH - "Let Freedom Ring with the Shot Gun Blast!"

I think this album has just a couple of very amazing songs then only anonymous tracks that come back directly from VIOLENCE period.

Machine Head's 1994 debut stands the test of time as one of the best debut metal albums ever, and as a classic example of how powerful metal can be. An absolute classic in the genre which has withstood the test of time...even Machine Head can't replicate the pure fury of this album.

If the one-two punch of album-opener "Davidian" and second track "Old" won't convince you of the sheer heaviness and intensity of this band; nothing will. I still get chills over how cool "Old" is when I listen to it...genius metal songwriting. The vocals aren't quite as good as many of the more polished current metal releases out today, but are nothing to dismiss, and become sort of secondary to the righteous indignation of the political and social commentary of the lyrics and the crushing thunder of the uber-heavy riffs, many of which are quite complex, and lay down serious groove. This album signalled the beginning of metal trying to throw off the whole grunge scene and step it up to the next level...the roots of the modern "extreme" metal scene. Very cool, and still amazing after all these years. If you are a metalhead and don't own this disc, shame on you.

Overall this is a tie for me with Supercharger for least favorite MachineHead CD....That being said this CD does contain some very good tracks..Exhale The Vile,The Burning Red,Nothing Left,The Blood the Sweat the Tears...Actually the more I think about it there are atleast 6 or so really excelent songs on this CD....However Crap songs like Desire to fire and and a few other songs that could have easily been sold of to make a Limp Bizkit CD bring the overall value of this CD way down...These songs will have you in a panic to get to the skip button in hopes nobody hears the crap.

Machine Head's "Burning Red" is almost like a split personality album, in which the band creates some of their signiture sound, but in other places it sounds like they were trying to cross over to a more poppy Nu Metal sound. Now, I am not one that completely hates NU Metal. There are those that think that all Nu Metal sucks, and if you are a Metal Fan, you are really kicking yourself for not being able to experience talented bands such as Mudvayne and DevilDriver, which are two of my favorite Nu Metal bands. Now, those bands that I mention have their own sound, which makes them unique and more diverse from most generic metal that you hear today. Even though Machine Head's first two albums might not be considered Nu Metal (by some people) I say it is; it has a bit of a Nu Metal feel, but with their own flavor. On the "Burning Red" we still get some really great "signiture" Machine Head with six songs on here such as "Desire to Fire", "Nothing Left", The Blood, The Sweat, the Tears", "From this Day", Devil with the Kings Card" and "Five". The other six songs. Well there is one cover of the Police's "Message in a Bottle" I love the original, I hate the cover. The other five songs sound like they band was trying to clone Slipknot and other pop Nu Metal. Now, some of you might like that, and therefore you might like the album a whole lot more then I did, but once bands start crossing over and change sounds (not because of desire to do something else musically, but to make some more $$$$ and earn more fans by becoming more radio friendly) there are on thin ice with me. Machine Head goes into a pop metal spirial with "Supercharger" so you could already tell it was coming. (look at the reviews for "Supercharger", they are terrible) I dont have any of the newer releases, as they pretty much peed me off with such a drastic change, but at least this album has some of the good stuff on it. Machine Head has been a band that has always kept my interest for at least three years. However, "The Burning Red" is an album that you should take warning on. At times, there are some somewhat thrash-reminscent tracks ("The Blood, The Sweat, The Tears"), some ballads ("Silver", "The Burning Red"), and then you have the controversial rapcore track "From This Day", which basically has previous fans turn their heads. The Police cover song, "Message in a Bottle", is a pretty good tune, but it's more ballad-esque and less groove thrash.

My opinion: This album is far from their greatest and will never dethrone "Burn My Eyes", but it has its moments as well. Just stay away from the sloppily put together "Supercharger" and you'll be safe.

This is an amazing CD. The sound is comparable to Sevendust's first album. It's one of the only discs I can listen to the whole way though without skipping around tracks.

I discovered The Burning Red by accident and it has become my favorite CD ever. It's an inspiration to people out there who have suffered and worked hard to rise above all that was bad in their lives.

There are a lot of people on here who don't like it because it is a little different then older Machine Head stuff... Don't listen to them. Some people just fear change.

I find it hard to believe that the same band who put out the heavy metal classic "Burn My Eyes" and the strong follow-up "The More Things Change", would suddenly sink into the nu-metal trash. To be honest, most nu-metal that I actually like, I wouldn't buy a CD from(the nu-metal CDs I do have are from my nu-metal phase). The awesome riffs, the cool solos, the sweet drumming, and a band who had a message about society have been pushed aside here for power chords, rapping, and self loathing lyrics. I gave this 2 stars because I like 2 or 3 songs on here, but one of those 3 songs is a cover. When I saw the music video for "From this Day", it almost made me want to slap Rob in the face. He went from a tall, powerful metalhead to a stupid, trendy, spiky-haired w igger. They would get worse on "Supercharger", but thank god that Machine Head recovered on "Through the Ashes of the Empires". This is not a good place to start for Machine Head at all. Get their first 2 albums and their new one to hear Rob and the gang as a post thrash/groove metal powerhouse, not a nu-metal slump.

Great follow up cd, regardless of what many say. This would be their best until 'Through the Ashes of Empires'.

They were just some of the the thoughts running through my head when I first heard this album. I have all of Machine Head's albums and to me this is one of the greatest albums ever released by the band.

1994's "Burn My Eyes" was a tremendous album, and although it took three years until The More Things Change was released, Im sure it would have been worth the wait for early listeners (I wasn't a fan back then.)

The album opens with a classic, Ten Ton Hammer, and then it pummels your @$$ until the final song.

Although you won't find a Davidian on this album, it is still a classic in its own way.

The style of Machine Head sort of evolved after "Burn My Eyes". This album certainly had songs a lot darker then all of the songs on the debut album, it also became a lot more punishing and heavier, although some of the songs on Burn My Eyes were a hell of a lot heavier than some of the songs on this album.

Ear bleeders such as "Blood for Blood" on the first album are still present here such as "The Frontlines" and "Ten Ton Hammer".

I disagree with the person who said that "The Burning Red" is better than this album. I believe that some of the songs were OK, but many were cruddy. That was Machine Head's worst album, but people can have their own opinions definatetly.

Anyway, after reading this review you will go to the nearby music
store and BUY THIS ALBUM. QUICKLY!!!!!!

If you're familiar with Machine Head's 'Burn My Eyes' album and if you've read the above title, then that should give you an idea on how 'The More Things Change...' is. If you still can't figure it out, then here's an even clearer explanation: it's a less inspired version of 'Burn My Eyes,' though still solid.

What makes the venerated 'Burn My Eyes' so great is its blend of quiet, slow, melody and loud, fast, aggressive thrash. This album tries to follow in that same vein, but unfortunately it falters a bit. It's mostly that the songs aren't as catchy as they are on its predecessor for whatever reason. My theory is that the guitar riffs are a bit more nu-metal sounding.

What can also be said is that 'The More Things Change...' is more divided. More of the songs either don't possess that same melodic/speed blend of 'Burn My Eyes,' or the song (e.g. 'Violate') presents a false sense of climax building. It's only when the song is near end that it becomes apparent that there isn't much of the aggressive rush as there was in songs such as in 'Burn My Eyes.'

Though not as compentate as its predecessor, this album still isn't bad. There are certainly memorable songs such as 'Spine,' 'The Frontlines,' 'Ten Ton Hammer,' and 'Struck a Nerve' (at least the first half.) If you don't already have 'Burn My Eyes,' then you'd be wise to get that album before considering this. If you're looking for material sort of in the same vein, then this is your best bet, as Machine Head's other releases have drifted too far from their original style (though some of it is still decent.)

Machine Head is one of the few bands that can completely cahnge -- sell out if you must--- and still own. I have all of their albums and like them all. Definit ly one of my top 5 bands. The more things change is actually the album that got me into them and its still my fav. The album is an emotional roller coaster and my fav MH song SPINE is on this album. Most people will say that Burn My Eyes is their best album and I'm not saying its not amazing, but this album is the best MH I have heard to date. Definitly check this out if you enjoy real metal.

What a great opener "Ten Ton Hammer" is. And what a great song. This album "The More Things Change.." is such a good follow-up to "Burn My Eyes" it almost betters it in some ways. Robb Flynn's vocals are so very good too, along with the riffs that are so tight, and the drumming which is just fantastic.

I bought this album a while ago, back in 1999, and as with Fear Factory's "Demanufacture", it changed my whole outlook on Heavy Metal. Machine Head write some really catchy songs that you can really mosh to. Seeing them Live would be awesome.

From the great opener, and definitely one of the greatest Machine Head songs ever written, "Ten Ton Hammer", right through to "Blood of The Zodiac"..Get ready to listen to an angry, pummeling, riff-tastic album. The best songs to me, and surely to others, would have to be "Ten Ton Hammer", "Take My Scars", "Down To None" (With it's cool slow intro, and powerful chorus..), "The Frontlines" (Riffs!!..), "Spine" (Another one of my favourite Machine Head songs..), "Violate" (A crawling intro really adds a kind of tension to it..It's actually that way for the entire song up until about 6 minutes, then it turns into Thrash/Hardcore, then slows down to a really headbanging riff..), and "Blistering" (Riffs!!..).

The song "Violate" i've read in interviews, is really personal to Robb Flynn although he doesn't exactly say why. All he says is "Read the lyrics.." ..It's one of the slowest songs on here, but isn't quite a slow, 'acoustic', song..It's really just a crawling riff through the entire song pretty much. It's a great song, and one of my favourites on this album. They also shot a pretty cool video for "Ten Ton Hammer" as well.

In a time when 'Nu-Metal' was starting to rise to it's peak, Machine Head with this album at least, really don't get caught in it. They stick mainly to their "Burn My Eyes" sound, while still producing something different, and a little more dark in my opinion. If you're new to Machine Head this is the perfect start.

This CD was pretty dissapointing expecially a few tracks on here really pissed me off. Bulldozer was a pretty heavy track, there are probably 3 songs on here that I would probably be very fond of if they were not packaged in with this CD. Having to associate the songs with Supercharger really brings down the value of them IMO. Still this CD's worse songs are still better than the Crap My radio station plays 20 times a day for 5 years strait.As a Machine Head fan I always Kinda looked at the burning red as a black eye, this album however I see as a gaping whole after passing out in a frat house. Still in the grand scheme of things sadly enough if you have friends that like main stream music this would most likely be the only Machine Head CD they would like.

I've been listening to MH since a buddy of mine got a copy of The More Things Change from Columbia House, didn't like it, and gave it to me. I back tracked and bought Burn My Eyes, and The Burning Red when it came out and enjoyed all 3 albums despite the big change in musical direction on The Burning Red. When Supercharger came out, I didn't really like any track off of it the first couple of listens, but after I dug a little deeper, it really grew on me. This is my first album review and I decided to give my opinion on one of MH's underrated albums. I'll go track-by-track:

01 Declaration: Intro.

02 Bulldozer: I love the opening riff in this song. I saw them on their Ashes tour with chimaira this was the only song off this album they played and it was awesome. 4/5

03 White-Knuckle Blackout: Just a straight-forward heavy rock song. Nice break down towards the end. The lyrics are rather juvenile though. 3/5

04 Crashing Around You: I never could get into this song. I'm surprised they wanted to make it a single. The beginning of the song Robb sounds a lot like Fred Durst. 2/5

05 Kick You When You're Down: I love this song. The whole thing rocks and you can really nod you head to it. The only part I dont like is when he says "They will only kick you when you're down." It just interrupts the heaviness of the song. 4/5

06 Only The Names: This song has a simplistic main riff, but MH always sounds good when they use harmonics, so that sort of saves it for me. A descent song, but not one of the best on the album. 3/5

07 All In Your Head: A good heavy song with a great chorus. Robb's clean vocals sound great. 4/5

08 American High: You either love this song or hate it. It's heavy, but is obnoxious at the same time. Has a rap metal, punkish suicidal tendencies vibe, and that's not necessarily a good thing. 2/5

09 Brown Acid: Skippable interlude.

10 Nausea: Another heavy song in the same vein as "All In Your Head," but with cheesier lyrics. I like the song regardless. 4/5

11 Blank Generation: A slower song, but with a really heavy breakdown towards the end. One of my favorites. 4/5

12 Trephanation: A crushing song with a simple, but effective bassline and double Bass kick pattern in the beginning and part of the verses. I love this track, very personal lyrics from Robb. 5/5

13 Deafening Silence: Fantastic song. A slow mover, but very powerful, the end is great. 5/5

14 Supercharger: Even the Burn My Eyes worshippers can appreciate this song. It has a tense buildup throughout and just explodes. It's just so heavy it's great. Doesn't sound like Nu Metal at all. 5/5

All in all this is another great album by a great band who will twice again out perform themselves with the fantastic "Through The Ashes Of Empires" and the soon-to-be legendary "The Blackening." I just wanted to voice my opinion that this album is NOT a black eye on Machine Head's Career, and that with a few listens, anyone can appreciate the honesty and hard work these guys put into their music.

I dont understand why everyone praises through the ashes of empires, and degrades this album, metal or no metal In my opinion Machine Head is far from metal anyway that doesnt mean that like them, I love this album. Its one of the best. The older stuff is good but this one is a masterpiece also, if you want to hear a bad machine head album listen to through the ashes.

I like Machine Head a lot. Many people disliked "The Burning Red" and called them sell-outs, but I appreciated the effort to make something different. Then came "Supercharger". I have listened to it a dozen times, looking for that hook or spark that will get me to listen and love it. It never came. This is a bad CD by a great band.

I've been a MH fan since the early beginning, back to 95 (94?) and the terrific burn my eyes. Saw them live a couple of times. Probably the best band live I ever saw (still remember the show they gave in France in 95, opening for Suicidal Tendencies, everyone was exhausted after their show and ST could have stayed at home, no one seemed interested! Amazing!!!). Really amazing. Rob is such an incredible frontman, whaouh!! I saw them on the supercharger european tour as well. And I just don't understand why so many people spit at this release. Is it forbidden for a band to elvolve a bit and propose something more personal? Why do people always compare one release with the previous releases of the band? Do you take time to listen to the lyrics? I do. I really find this album great, songs like deafening silence really move me. I am personally touched by the subjects of many of the songs. But maybe you don't have feelings. It's a pity. This album is really outstanding. I can't help myself just singing along even after so many years. A must-have. Do not listen to what these stupid teenagers say. Make your own opinion.

This cd is the first live cd i have ever purchased, and i must say it is great. I havent listened to Machine Head long maybe 4-5 years. This is in my opinion one of their greater cd's. I would also reccommend this to a new fan so they can truly appreciate how great Machine Head is withought all the studio equipment.

I wrote a review for this a while ago, but after seeing MH live I have defenitely changed my mind. The setlist on this album leaves alot to be desired, but the production is more than adequate... and songs like davidian are still the baseball bat to the face they were in 1994 on burn my eyes.

I guess my only real problem with this album, is the presence of anything from supercharger, and to a lesser extent the burning red.

This does the live show aboslutely no justice, believe me machine head are 100 times more pissed off and hungry in person than on here.

I cant change the rating, or else id give it three stars... but this is still pretty cool, like if you want to hear none but my own but dont have burn my eyes (shame on both of us)

Machine Head have been known for their live show. Even though most bands claim that is their fortay, when it comes to MH - they really mean it. This cd is a perfect example of why they have gained such notority over the years. They mix in the old with the new and blend them both together with their patented live style. If you have liked MH at any point in time, this cd is a must have! You can't make a better live cd!!

A great classic of metal, Machine Head has pulled out all stops with this live cd. I feel it is one of the best live cds that has been put out in a long time. You can feel how much pride they put in to there music with the hard hitting beats an great riffs on gituar. If I did not already own this cd I would be buying it agin to feel the excitement of listening to Machine Head agin. They are awsome an have no equals out there. Machine head rocks all night long in my cd player. \m/ \m/

This live cd has all solid performances of some great Machine Head songs. Some notable tracks are 'Ten ton hammer', 'Old', 'I'm your god now', 'The blood, the sweat, the tears', 'Davidian', and 'Take my scars'. Though obvious overdubs in the recording are evident, and Robb Flynn admits to it, its probably overall the best live show Machine Head could put onto cd. The most outstanding performances are definitely 'None but my own' and 'The Burning Red' (2 extra tracks from a 2002 show, thankfully without the [weak]novice guitarist ahrue luster.) I saw a Machine Head show in New york city and Luster was so painfully horrible. His guitar kept on getting unplugged from the amps as he was bouncing around the stage like a fool, and it always took their crew a disturbingly long time to get him plugged back in. Not to mention his style [is weak], and he couldn't play a solo to save his life. Robb did all the solos. I miss Logan Maders loud, powerful, heavy guitar work.
