WHOA. Did I read that somebody skips-over "Inertia Creeps (#4)??"
Wow. That's pretty crazy, given that "Inertia Creeps" is one of the dopest songs on Mezzanine. It's like being in a knock-down-drag-out fist-fight in slow motion. What's not to like about that?
AND people down-grading "Black Milk?" What are you guys thinking?

#7 "Man Next Door" is my least likeable, but overall this album is epic as far as 90's music goes. Well yeah, it's pretty epic overall.

And seriously, give 100th Window more of a try. Songs like "Future Proof" and "Special Cases" are vintage Massive Attack. Period.

The first four tracks on Mezzanine are masterpieces, probably the apotheosis of Trip-Hop. Dark, dreamlike, beautiful, stunningly sculpted -- one senses the hundreds, even thousands of studio manhours that went into each song. The rest of the album is brilliant as well, though the "comedown" tracks #5 & #11 might be skipped on repeat listenings. Tracks #6-10 continue the greatness in different directions -- sometimes sly and funny, sometimes crunching rock. Each song has an arc, which takes multiple listenings to understand. This might be sounds repeated at the beginning that are layered upon, then layered upon again, until the whole things unwinds and you are left with the same sounds (the heavy thudding beat in "Angel," the looped feedback in "Dissolved Girl") in a new context. Songs unfold like dreams, with images and bits of narrative fading in and out. Be sure to listen to this on a good stereo; Mezzanine uses the entire audio spectrum, including some very deep bass. (E.g., at 1'30" into "Angel," you should be alarmed at how the stygian bass is getting even louder...right before the "door-ajar" car sound which is the tolling bell of doom.) This might be the most tightly controlled album I have heard. Brilliant stuff.

I have to admit I really hated most of the other songs, outside of Tear Drop and Angel, when I first listened in the car on a long road trip, but on the way back to my city, they got in. This is one of my favorite CD's ever. I have them on rotation on my iPod, on burned CD's in my car, on my work computer, my brother's xBox. You do have to be in a certain mood to thoroughly enjoy Mezzanine, but if you are you're gonna love it, not to mention is perfect for a late night with you special person, oh my goodness "Angel." This album is just about perfect.

Didn't know this group from Adam. Bought it for just the low bass to test out my speakers and new subwoofer. Has some catchy tunes, not a bad CD.

I really like most of this CD. I have no real complaints about it except for the title track and another one by the same vocalist. The lyrics are ridiculously boring and simple. It's really painful to listen to.

Save for those two tracks, this album is quite good. Like Mezzanine, it's got style, class and talent. Spyglass and Karmacoma are especially good. I gave it 3 stars, but I really think it deserves 3.5.

Massive Attack have gotten a lot of praise, but most of it is either for their first album Blue Lines, or for their third album Mezzanine. Protection tends to get lost between those two. But in fact, it's Protection that's really the best Massive Attack album. I can listen to it the whole way through, and when it's over, I find myself wishing there was even more. I can't even remember the last time I bought an album that I could say that about.

Perhaps Protection doesn't have the same reputation as Blue Lines and Mezzanine because it doesn't have any "obvious" hits, deliberately powerful songs like "Safe From Harm" or "Angel." The biggest single here is "Protection," a long eight-minute rumination without any particular build-up or dramatic climax. The chorus isn't a pop chorus, either, because it doesn't repeat a hook. But nevertheless, the song is beautiful. The gentle mid-tempo rhythm steadily draws one into the mood of the song.

The lyrics in the album don't matter so much. Massive Attack were never known for being great poets. But the words do contribute to the mood. In "Protection," Tracey Thorn encourages "you" to take care of someone who needs help, which first means some girl, but later seems to become "you." The choice of words is good: "You can lean on me / And that's more than love, that's the way it should be" and "She's a girl and you're a boy / Sometimes we look so small." I really like Massive Attack's style of romanticism -- instead of dramatizing individual angst and professing eternal love (okay, except for "One Love," I guess, but even that was more about how Horace Andy believes in being faithful than about star-crossed bliss), they usually refer to smaller, everyday situations and imply that small changes in these situations might have a great impact. No wonder they make the best make-out music. By the way, Protection is excellent for that purpose.

Then there's "Karmacoma," another candidate for a big single that also doesn't quite fit comfortably into that role. The song does have a pop chorus, and features Robert del Naja and Tricky in a Blue-Lines-like rap exchange, but it's driven by a very curious reggae-inflected rhythm and a groovy keyboard break that resembles old Latin music more than techno or hip-hop. The song is upbeat, but it has the same hushed production as "Protection," which makes it sound disconcerting and vaguely ominous. This is very different from the band's earlier work, and it's all the more impressive when you consider that, by 1994, other bands had just begun catching up to Blue Lines, which had been released three years earlier.

Protection is very different from Massive Attack's other albums stylistically. I usually say that Blue Lines is a modern-day soul album, with elements of rap and techno. Those things are still present here, but the overall atmosphere is closer to some kind of old-style, early twentieth-century romance than to smooth 70s soul, albeit with a techno production. There are two instrumentals which use pianos and strings for the main melodies. Both of them are gorgeous. "Weather Storm" in particular anchors the pianos with a deep electronic bass groove and dub-style keyboard textures. "Heat Miser" repeats what sounds like someone breathing through an oxygen mask. Somehow, next to the strings, this has a poignant effect, creating a sense of fragility.

Protection also has the least reliance of all Massive Attack albums on the band's core vocalists. Robert del Naja appears on only two songs, compared to four on each of the other albums. The ever-reliable Horace Andy has one turn on "Spying Glass," a remake of one of his own old Jamaican standards, with a great deep house beat and some reggae-style drum breaks. The other songs are either instrumentals or use guest vocalists, and by the way, Protection also has the best guest vocalists of any Massive Attack album. Nicolette Suwoton in particular has a very distinctive vocal style, but both women perform with subtlety and dramatic restraint, compared to Shara Nelson's occasional soul-diva histrionics (not that that's altogether a bad thing) or Sara Jay's angsty spoiled-teenager voice.

But even though Protection doesn't have any obvious hits, I liked it immediately, whereas it took me a long time to really enjoy Blue Lines and Mezzanine as albums. That's because those other albums also have a bunch of lesser songs that don't make strong impressions when compared to the big hits. But the songs on Protection are consistently excellent. The second side is just as good as the first. For instance, "Better Things" might seem like a rewrite of "Protection," because it features the same vocalist and uses a similar musical backdrop, but in fact, it stands up perfectly well on its own. The lyrics are knowing and bitter, and Tracey Thorn delivers them with a weary understatement that almost makes one feel vicariously ashamed for whoever it is that she's addressing. Immediately after that is "Eurochild," which has the kind of noirish menace that I really wish someone could depict these days. Tricky and del Naja's relaxed, gravelly half-whispers are perfect for suggesting danger underneath the surface, and halfway through the song there's an instantly catchy keyboard hook. This would be a good candidate for a big hit, but it wasn't released as a single.

The only flaw of the album is the very last track, a live cover of "Light My Fire" by The Doors. The recording is so muddy that only Horace Andy's voice is audible, and anyway, that's not the sort of song that Massive Attack are best at. I prefer to think of it as an unnecessary bonus track rather than part of the album. The album itself, however, is perfect, and I highly recommend it regardless of whether or not you usually enjoy this kind of music.

as usual, i order a cd like 'protection' for a song or two. then i get a great surprise.

in this case, it's the title track, with vocals by tracey thorn. thorn, along with lisa gerrard, dusty springfield, doris day, billie holiday, aretha franklin and a few others, has a uniquely gorgeous voice and styling that is immediately identifiable for so many things--a social scene, a certain era, a mood.

unlike the others, she has still to get her due and fame as a singer. here's hoping that people will use her and get her heard as much as the law will allow.

A lot of people prefer blue lines over protection and I just don't understand that. I found protection to be great. Possibly one of the best CDs that Massive attack has ever released other than Mezzanine. Eurochild is mindblowingly amazing. Karmacoma, Better things, Heat Miser, weather storm and spying glass are also exceptional. The only reason I don't give this a 5 star rating is cause of the last track. A cover of the Doors, Light my fire that, to me, seems very pointless.

Eleven years have pass since Massive Attack came out with this album, and when i listen to it, still sounding as fresh and new as that then it?s an amazing work , with the colaboration of the also amaizing Craig Armstrong, Tracy Thorn and Tricky .

I have always thought that melancholy it?s the ?nice?part of being sad, well this is the feeling in this CD . With sublime work on the piano made by Armstrong and the angel voice of Tracy Thorn (Everything But The Girl) this three guys made a classic album that is going to last forever , full of inovative sounds, vocals and deep feeling. While others reviewers think of it as a dark album (which really is , i?m not going to desagree) i think of it more as a beawtiful and melancholic album but no matter how we feel it, this is a most have!!!!

No matter what kind of music you like this is one of those albums that have something for everybody unless you like Paulina Rubio

If this album would not have included ?Lite My Fire? this could have been call PERFECTION instead of PROTECTION

I am 18 and I just discovered Massive Attack last year. I really liked Portishead and Tricky and thought Trip-Hop was a very interesting musical genre. But it was not until I heard Blue Lines that I understood what Trip-hop was all about. It amazes me that this album is from 1991 because it sounds much more modern and (dare I say) fresher than anything today. The rap anthems, Five Man Army and Blue lines are amazing in their arrangements and slow motion rapping. THIS is what trip hop is all about. It's not suppose to be depressing, it's suppose to be relaxing.

Just buy it and listen for yourself! Highly recommended.

I have written a review complaining about the Free Shipping in the US (broken cd cases, torn covers), but actually there seems to be a problem with PAID INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING too.
I bought Madonna's Give it 2 me single, Massive Attack - Blue Lines and Depeche Mode's Speak and Spell and all of them arrived with broken cases, I had to replace the cases for new ones.
Just to mention what I said in the other review: bought a box set and 3 CDs from HMV Japan and they arrived in more than perfect condition in Brazil, faster than Amazon!
I tried to buy from Amazon Japan, but guess what? The Fedex shipment is pretty bad as the parcel ALWAYS gets stuck in Customs and you have this long list of taxes that almost exceed the price of the product!
The Amazon shipment service (national and international) is a joke!!

If you are looking for a great cd to listen to than look no further than Massive Attack's "Blue Lines". My personal favorites on the album have to be Daydreaming and One Love. This CD is a must have for any true fan.

Trip-Hop is basically hip-hop with a bit more substance than your average gangster record (those actually do have substance as well), and way more musical merit than any _________ rap artist out there today. Being released in 1991 makes it even cooler, but aside from the ahead of it's time bull_______ (influence had no impact on me whatsoever when deciding to get this), it's an awesome record on it's own. THe music is just so sublime. Trippy beats, deep basslines, samples of pianos, strings, effects, paired with dark urban raps, with soulful vocals that soar through the air. Can't argue with that.

The songs on here have the urban vibe that I alwayas mention, but it is very _________ difficult to explain in words. No worries, the music is great anywhere, Blue Line really comes out in the downtown rain. IT's also great music that serves as great chilling music. Don't even treat this as backround music, this may be one of the most enganging albums to actually LISTEN to I have come across this year. I've listened to quite the many perfect classic albums this year.

This album is always changing, always keeping your interest. From Safe From Harm, Five Man Army, the masterful Unfinished Symphony, and the coolest of them all, Daydreaming, every song on here rocks. Definitly a perfect album. Not a minute wasted. I prefer it over Entroducing... by DJ Shadow. That album also is another great album from beggining to end. Electronic music really does have soul. Way more emotion than Nirvana ever will have.

massive attack's 'blue lines' is a classic example of melding deep bass lines, great percussion tracks, fabulous vocals by tricky and shara nelson and inventive samples into the music phenom known as trip hop.

many have tried and failed at creating music this good. this is the kind of sound that can sit in the background or take center stage at any event. and its inventiveness is matched only by its timelessness. this cd sounds as good now as it did 15+ years ago.

if you love the movie as i do, this is a great cd. you feel like you're watchin the movie in each track, be they dialogue or music.

the music is better in snatch than lock stock, too

Snatch is a great movie like it's predecessor Lock, Stock...but the soundtrack just doesn't give you the same hit as the Lock soundtrack. The songs are OK but not good enough for repeated plays - disappointing after the lock soundtrack.

Some of the tracks were somewhat disturbing so I skipped them when I recorded this album from CD to cassette. Overall, the tracks were eclectic and energetic. Listening to them definitely reminded me of specific scenes from the movie, which I own on VHS format. Down with digital and up with analog!

Not typically a fan of soundtracks. This one is awesome! Great collection of songs with great choice of dialogue mixed in. Listen to this one all the way through.

I have watched this movie so many times, and it is still great. I love Guy Richie's creactivity. An all star cast mixed with a great plot and that sly under the door humor make all much better than your normal hit man comedy.

What else is there to say, its a collection of Massive Attack and if you aren't a fan you probably shouldn't even be reading this.

The songs are just the tip of the Massive Attack iceberg, a groundbreaking group that has produced excellent mold shattering music and in fact created a whole new sound often referred to as Bristol Trip Hop and launched a solo career of Tricky.

By no means should this be all you own, get Mezzanine which is an exceptional album as a compliment.

Massive Attack come back is excellent. It got a great selection of the most popular songs during their career, with a little upgrade I will say. This will be a wonderful piece for the M.A. lovers, and if you are not a fan, you will get hook to it.

Massive Attack has got to be one of the coolest bands on the planet. On many of these tracks, dark and creepy would also be a good description. Generally stuck in the trip-hop or electronica genre's, this is mood music at it's best. As with any collection favorites are missing, but for the new or casual fan, this might just be your first or only stop. Songs are drawn from all four albums, and a new track to close. Guest vocals could not have been more perfectly chosen, from Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) on "Teardrop", Tracey Thorn (Everything But The Girl) on "Protection", and Sinead O'Connor on "What Your Soul Sings", among other singers. I really don't think this group has any equal. Only possibly Portishead comes close. If any of the people or genre's mentioned above interest you, I think you will love this. You'll most likely become a massive fan.

It's hard to tell who's in and who's out of the Massive Attack line-up these days (since Mushroom departed under a cloud in 1998 and Daddy G took a backseat on fourth album 100th Window, the name has generally become a dark and Gothic vehicle for sole founding member 3D), yet their legacy is assured thanks to their iconic 1991 debut Blue Lines and its staggering follow-up Protection.
A more compact musical overview than the earlier Singles Box: 1990-1998, Collected features 14 of the Bristol acts most popular moments with new tune Live With Me tagged on the end. Fans of the trio's early singles such as Daydreaming and Hymn Of The Big Wheel may be disappointed by their absence on Collected, but later masterworks such as Angel and Future Proof are given the space to breathe on this disc of ominous rhythms.
While 3D's sombre vocals are present on many of the key tracks, it is the appearances of guests that ensured Massive Attack truly soared. Tricky's early success Karmacoma, Liz Fraser's pristine additions to Teardrop and Shara Nelson's powerful rendition on Safe From Harm open Collected in fine form, with Tracey Thorn, Horace Andy and Sinead O'Connor among the additional guests that follow. Although there's a clash of styles as the paranoid vibe of Inertia Creeps bleeds into the mellow and sublime Protection, generally Collected acts as a fine introduction to the influential band that outgrew their berated trip hop label.
Collected is a sound investment by any greatest hits standard, but Massive Attack's back catalogue deserves to be investigated at a deeper level once this record has been devoured and deconstructed.

I love this band but for me Mezzanine just had a more dirty, gritty street DJ kind of grit element to it, especially with all those distorted guitars too. BUT I found a better follow up album to Mezzanine which I love and it's not Massive Attack it's actually this unknown artist called Orpheos and the album is called (Project Retrograde). Found it on amazon and I like it more than that 100th window elevator music.

I've seen many divided reviews about this album. People either praised "100th Window" or hated it. However, I still enjoy Massive Attack for their dark, brooding trip-hop beats, and "100th Window" is anything but boring.

It's true that "100th Window" features fewer beats and lacks the electric guitar edginess of "Mezzanine" and the disco/hip-hop styles of "Blue Lines." However, Massive Attack makes up for it in full with gorgeous string orchestrations.

"Special Cases" is one song that really gets me in the mood. I love O'Connor's singing, next to the minor key strings. Even though the lyrics in her other song, "What Your Soul Sings," is a little cheesy ("That tickle in your ear?"), it sounded more interesting than the lyrics to "Teardrop." In fact, this album almost feels like the O'Connor show, if it wasn't for Massive Attack's awesome orchestrations and trip-hop beats.

Massive Attack really hits the spot with the quick trip-hop song "Butterfly Caught," which mixes Middle Eastern samples with an upbeat beat. It's an awesome combination that DJ Shadow should have thought about using, before he did that weird switch to making too many collaborations with rappers.

While the songs on this album, such as "Small Time Shot Away" and "Name Taken," are more subdued, I appreciate that they aren't as intensely moody as they were in the album "Mezzanine." And while "Antistar" does get a little long, the Middle Eastern sounds are beautiful. The whole album feels like an electronic masterpiece, like Cornershop without the goofiness. It's a beautiful album, even if it wasn't like "Blue Lines" or "Mezzanine." I'm looking forward to the next album by Massive Attack.

I've been a long time Massive Attack fan and I really like this album! It's moody, and--at times--it sends chills up my spine. I think it's a fine follow-up to Mezzanine. In fact, I'm glad that this album is in a similar vein to Mezzanine because frankly, I listened to Mezzanine so much when if first came out that I'm kind of sick of it--I don't really listen to it much anymore (same thing with Radiohead's Ok Computer! Love the album but I played it far too much). So, for me, I'm very happy with this album.

I hope that the reviewers who didn't like this CD when they wrote their reviews have since given the release another shot. I liken the Mezzanine-100th Window transition to the OK Computer-Kid A transition. When I first heard Kid A after loving OK Computer, my initial reaction was literally, "Well, that was weird." Flash forward and the next thing I know I'm craving the weird. I just had to let Kid A work into my noodle.

Similarly, I loved and was amazed by Mezzanine and wasn't too sure about 100th Window when I first listened. Now I still love Mezzanine, but when Risingson starts to sound a bit "not new," Futureproof, Everywhen, Butterfly Caught, Small Time Shot Away, and A Prayer for England are there in all their anti-hit greatness.

Recommendation: be alone in the dark and play Small Time Shot Away at a decent volume and just listen to everything that's going on in the song and how exquisitely it all goes together. If that doesn't at least pique/re-new your interest, then you and this CD just weren't meant to be.

This Massive Attack album is outstandingly great. From the photographs in the booklet to the music itself. However, this one features less rap influences that Mezzanine and has more electronica on it. I loved it and if you like trip-hop or are a Massive Attack fan, this is a must-buy. Completely worth the money.

I'm not sure what must have been going through the minds of the record label when assembling this collection as a sequel to Pure Moods vol. I. Now granted, most of Pure Moods I is actually quite good and enjoy it though I don't think it stacks up to the "Earthtone Collection", "Elevation", or "Buddha Lounge" series nor warranted TV commercials. The second entry in the Pure Moods series is in my opinion, the most uneven and shakiest of the entries for several reasons, several tracks do absolutely nothing for me. "Nightingale" strikes me as meandering classical leftovers from a orchestral outtake. No offense but what on Earth is "Breezin" doing on this collection?! It's not a bad song by any means but it has absolutely no place on here and belongs on a smooth jazz moods collection. The same goes for Dave Koz's "Emily" even though I think it's a wonderful song and among my favorites. "Weatherstorm" is pathetic, nuff said. "Theme From Harry's Game" is a great song, very innovative for 1982 standards but is found on too many various artists and 'best of' collections.

Enough with the negatives. There are still enough very good tracks that in my opinion keep this from being a complete failure. "Life in a Northern Town" is a very lovely mid-80s acoustic electronic pop hybrid track that could be the soundtrack to a drive in northern Scotland on a sunny afternoon. "Mummer's Dance" is a dark-horse classic with it's unique blend of Middle-Eastern and Celtic wintery sounds. I was suprised at how well the song did on the top 40 charts during late 1997 and early 1998. Loreena's voice is enchanting throughout the song. "The Cradlesong" is a lovely blend of echoing Ambient Native American and New Age Groove, reminscent of "500 Nations". "Montezuma" is a very intense song with loud thundering Central Drums, and slightly classical elements scattered throughout. Definately among my favorites on here. Other greats include Delirium's danceable "Euphoria", "Beyond The Invisible", and "The Mystic Dream".

This collection overall is in my opinion, the most uneven of the four Pure Moods CDs. Some tracks are absolutely drab yet others are magnificent making this among the most shaky collections out there. I definately recommend it though not as a 'must-have'. The successor to this collection, "Vol. III" corrected most of the mistakes made on here.

I bought the very first Pure Moods and was hooked. When this one came out, I went and bought and was not dissappointed.

I loved the first CD, so got the 2nd one. Quite dissapointed. I thought a handful of the songs on 2 were good, such as Firefly, but overall it just seems like they threw together a bunch of songs to sell a copy of a popular CD.

What a marvelous collection of mesmerizing music this is. I have been listening to this album all week, as I can't get it out of my head. Pure Moods are one my favorite collections as they bring awareness of similar music that goes together so well. The beauty of this album is the mix of music that evokes a certain mood, while not sounding all too similar.

Starting off with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers Dance" a hypnotic song from the first note that sounds like time travel from ancient Byzantium to the mystic Celtic seas followed by Montezuma, one of my favorite Cusco pieces. Cusco is a duet of two German keyboard players Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze who make their enigmatic music sound very original and South American. The music is not traditional; it's a mix of outer space, new age and pan flutes. Very interesting and incredibly likable.

"Nightingale" by Yanni is just incredible, every time I have it on I almost forget I am listening to music, I simply feel it and I am always amazed at how gorgeous it sounds and whenever I hear this song it feel like the first time I am hearing it as it stuns me.

Another favorite of mine, Adiemus makes an appearance, the interesting figment is that
the language is made up by Karl Jenkins, the sounds are not meant to distract the listener from the music. It is a mix of classical and world music with great freedom of movement and is the kind of music they use in breathtaking movie soundtracks.

Delerium's "Euphoria" almost sounds like a Madonna song, is lovely and spirited with a breath of enigma. There is also "The Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, another strong musical piece that does sound like an actual storm of music.

"Teardrop" by Massive Attack sounds like song everything knows they heard somewhere but they don't know what it is. My favorite part is the base beat, it sounds like the human heart.

The rest of the performers from Lovely and church like Clannad which make me feel like I am in an ancient monastery listening to the monks, to "Chariots of Fire" a classic from Vangelis to wonderful and earthy "Breezing" that sounds like the first day of spring to Enigma, to me the empress of New Age. This collection is stellar and each song is a 5 star to me.

This cd makes me happy; it's relaxing, lovely, and addictive and provides great inspiration when I need it to concentrate while I work on my art. Each song has been carefully hand picked to hit the listener with a magnitude of emotion and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who needs to sit back and be transported. The songs feel like caresses of ancient wind on the face and make me feel like I have been meditating for hours. Pure Moods is an excellent cd to pick up by someone who needs an introduction to new Age and relaxing music. So far this has been my favorite disc, but they are all lovely.

A fair soundtrack album from the pioneering trip-hop group will not go over to well with fans expecting fleshed out, vocal-based singles. Playing out closer to a Dust Brothers disc, this meandering score may work well as background music, though rarely has little of substance to offer when examined closely. In between rambling keyboards and textbook beats Massive Attack does manage to throw a few tracks worth revisiting, but a majority of this generically diverse score fails to engage outside it's cinematic counterpart.

The Cd was fine, I thought the songs had words, but it doesn't... though not the fault of the seller or amazon...

This CD has all the music and even more from the movie..there is no profanity or words children under 13 can't listen to.

Great movie score, love the music. There is the beginning of a famous song being played during the scene where victoria sits next to Danny and begins showing him how to play the piano, she plays only a few notes along with his assistance. I can't think of the composer. It's obviously not in the soundtrack.

For those who enjoy the listening ventures of electronica and/or world music, this album definitely meets the best of each music style. Though I am more prone to their more popular collections (my favorite of all time: Protection), it was a nice treat to hear Massive Attack create and collaborate with other interesting artists. For instance, the song 'Teardrop' was sung by the former lead singer for the Cocteau Twins; and there was another interesting track sung by Sinead O'Connor. Overall, this 'best of' album consisted of some massively cool stuff.

In addition, the DVD portion was quite interesting. I wasn't expecting to see a strip tease (for 'Be Thankful For What You've Got') as part of this DVD collection; however, that video was done in somewhat good taste. As for the remaining videos, there was some cool digital and visual effects.

Overall, I am glad I COLLECTED this CD as part of my music library!

Did you never had anything from Massive Attack? You had listen to some songs, here and there..
This is a very very good hits album. I usually buy compilations, or greatest hits albums from bands that I already have almost everything. Well, I amazed about this selection from Massive Attack.
Even if you never heard anything from them, give it a try with this album and you won't be disappointed. The two audio discs are full of excellent songs. The DVD just make this album a five star item. I guess there are 14 videos. Be aware of dvd/audio disc, yeah, this album is composed by one audio cd and a dual side disc. One side is dvd and the other is the second audio cd. Nice idea ;-)

This is a GREAT double album, you get a CD with some of the best of [MA], and dual CD/DVD that has new material and videos. its my first [MA] album and I love it. The only thing I was disappointed with was that they did not include "The hunter gets captured by the game" with Tracy Thorne, because that's one of their best collabs in my opinion. But non the less, you get many great performances here, including Mos Def if I'm not mistaken.

Very Nice album, highly recommended to electronica genre fans everywhere.

Good collection of some of their material from past years...plus a few great b-sides/remixes...all in the typical Massive style. My favorite group.

Unlike the single 'Collected' CD, this item gets you THREE discs (well, the main CD + a DualDisc with a second CD on one side and a DVD on the other side), so I would consider it a good value.

The main CD is a very good mix of their best songs, the second CD has 10 B-sides/new tracks (while not their best, if you are a fan, its great to hear some new work!), and the DVD has 16 music videos.

While this would not be a bad place for a new listener to start, the B-sides might not strike a cord unless you are already a fan and are into their sound - this is a must-have for any fan.

WHOA. Did I read that somebody skips-over "Inertia Creeps (#4)??"
Wow. That's pretty crazy, given that "Inertia Creeps" is one of the dopest songs on Mezzanine. It's like being in a knock-down-drag-out fist-fight in slow motion. What's not to like about that?
AND people down-grading "Black Milk?" What are you guys thinking?

#7 "Man Next Door" is my least likeable, but overall this album is epic as far as 90's music goes. Well yeah, it's pretty epic overall.

And seriously, give 100th Window more of a try. Songs like "Future Proof" and "Special Cases" are vintage Massive Attack. Period.

The first four tracks on Mezzanine are masterpieces, probably the apotheosis of Trip-Hop. Dark, dreamlike, beautiful, stunningly sculpted -- one senses the hundreds, even thousands of studio manhours that went into each song. The rest of the album is brilliant as well, though the "comedown" tracks #5 & #11 might be skipped on repeat listenings. Tracks #6-10 continue the greatness in different directions -- sometimes sly and funny, sometimes crunching rock. Each song has an arc, which takes multiple listenings to understand. This might be sounds repeated at the beginning that are layered upon, then layered upon again, until the whole things unwinds and you are left with the same sounds (the heavy thudding beat in "Angel," the looped feedback in "Dissolved Girl") in a new context. Songs unfold like dreams, with images and bits of narrative fading in and out. Be sure to listen to this on a good stereo; Mezzanine uses the entire audio spectrum, including some very deep bass. (E.g., at 1'30" into "Angel," you should be alarmed at how the stygian bass is getting even louder...right before the "door-ajar" car sound which is the tolling bell of doom.) This might be the most tightly controlled album I have heard. Brilliant stuff.

I have to admit I really hated most of the other songs, outside of Tear Drop and Angel, when I first listened in the car on a long road trip, but on the way back to my city, they got in. This is one of my favorite CD's ever. I have them on rotation on my iPod, on burned CD's in my car, on my work computer, my brother's xBox. You do have to be in a certain mood to thoroughly enjoy Mezzanine, but if you are you're gonna love it, not to mention is perfect for a late night with you special person, oh my goodness "Angel." This album is just about perfect.

Didn't know this group from Adam. Bought it for just the low bass to test out my speakers and new subwoofer. Has some catchy tunes, not a bad CD.

This cd is priceless. I'm so glad I got it.
