Ok, now I think that Enchanted has a powerful instrumental soundtrack, and I admire that. Unfortunately, it can get a little too 'girly' a little too quickly, and that's where I have to draw my border between stepping into, well, non-guyish quality. I mean, I will admit...for guys, the album could go without 'Ever Ever After', and all the fluffy sung songs in the beginning, but I guess that's what made up Enchanted. As for the instrumental pieces, they were awesome.

This is a great soundtrack. It has both the songs and the background music tracks. I really like the format where they put all the songs but one (and it was a background song really) at the front of the album and then put the background music tracks. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be.

I have watched this movie many time with my grandchildren and by myself. It is just a feel good movie and very entertaining. I would recommend this movie to everyone.

I bought this DVD the day after I saw the movie in theatres. Truly, the songs are enchanting and I am happy so many of them were nominated for the Oscar's "Best Song". They are in true Disney fashion with just a hint of tongue-in-cheek. The instrumentals are lovely as well, but not nearly as great as the songs. However, this is worth Amy Adam's lovely voice.

My whole family truly enjoyed the movie, "Enchanted" and we really wanted to be able to sing the wonderfully addictive songs. I purchased this CD to listen in the car with my daughters and we sing like crazy. They frequently ask to bring the CD into the house so that they can sing and dance at the same time. It is a really fun CD for the kids and the adults. Very cute.

The CD really brings out the intricacy and tremendous variety in musical styles found in the film. The cuts are also, for the most part, quite short. Except for the songs by Louis Armstrong and Peter Gabriel, they all seem like snippets. It is not like the Star War soundtracks where you heard a complete piece. So, if you are a real fan of movie, and really liked the music, it's a good purchase; otherwise, it may disappoint. I don't regret buying the CD because it so interesting. Had they reduced the number of cuts and fleshed-out the remaining, it could have been a great stand alone CD.

I love this score. Every time I listened, I can picture Wall-e and his antics.

Compare to the other released version, this has 2 extra tracks, BNL and Septuacentennial, and is in a thin cardboard case. Sometimes its a struggle to take out but then again its still new so I got to wear it out a bit I guess. Every time I try to take it out, I get very nervous about scratching the CD.

Most of the music is composed by Thomas Newman but the songs are done by other people. I Recommend this to the usual: fan of the composer/music, movie or Pixar. Pretty good music to work with. Worth the buy.

Thomas Newman is a film composer to pay attention to. His scores all carry his unmistakable style, but they're all different somehow. His score for "WALL-E" is similar to his score for "Finding Nemo" in the way that it captures a somewhat bittersweet feeling, and creates emotional moments in the film without getting sappy. This is a fun score.

OK, the music is great, if you liked the score to Finding Nemo, you'll find more of the same here. The lonesome, haunting melodies that begin the story are great, and there's some fun adventure music and audio clips from the movie.

BUT

Disney decided to package this in a 100% recycled cardboard sleeve case, which essentially means that every time you take your CD in or out of the sleeve, you are scratching the CD against cardboard. So while they're supposedly being environmentally-conscious with the packaging, they're quickly destroying a CD disc which will need to be trashed in a landfill somewhere once it gets too scratched to perform. My suggestion if you like this score: buy the mp3 download, or buy the disc and make a copy of it--or put the CD into a less destructive jewel case.

When I saw that Thomas Newman was composing the music for this movie, I was ecstatic. Finding Nemo has one of the best scores ever, so I had high expectations for Wall E. I wasn't disappointed. The music spreads over many different emotions present in the movie, from the haunting melody of "2815 AD" to the beautiful and heartwearming "Define Dancing," two of my favorites on the CD. The score keeps the futuristic setting in mind while still keeping the emotion. This is a fantastic soundtrack, made all the more endearing by the addition of "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "It Only Takes a Moment" from Hello, Dolly, Wall E's favorite movie.

This is exactly what I wanted and I rec'd it very fast turnaround. Thanks you!

Beethoven is my favorite composer. This is a good (but not great) collection, and all versions are good.

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

Good overview of his works----an introduction into his depth as a composer

I wasn't sure what to expect. I know the cover art is a little cheesy. But the recording is fantastic. I think great pains were taken to make this as true to Hermann's original score as possible. It's clean, dynamic and really show how much contemporary film scoring was influenced by Bernard Hermann. And the thereminist on this is really first rate.
If you liked the original movie, are into film scoring or a theremin fan, this CD is highly recommended.

Listening to this soundtrack recreates a haunting story wherein a visitor with an important message was spurned-- to our dismay. Turn it up!

but I like it as well if not better. This is Bernard Hermann's original score performed by orchestra (including Theremin) at Abbey Road Studios in 2002. The attention to detail and consideration of original arrangement is exemplary. As a long time fan of this film classic (and if you haven't seen it, find it ! After 58 years, it still speaks volumes of the human condition and futile politics) I've heard the original soundtrack within the film many times. This is different, of course, but excellent within its own right. If you wish to study the Theremin exquisitly used in an orchestral environment, this is the score and one the best recordings I've heard. Hermann's composition is simply classic of the genre.

being a huge fan of the movie and having the original soundtrack already I decided to give this re-recording a listen as it had extra tracks, well I was pleasantly suprised by how joel mcneely had reproduced the sounds and style of herrmanns original soundtrack,
with it obviously being in stereo it gives you that extra depth and feel to the movie,
well done mr mcneely your a credit to the industry.

Seems a bit silly reviewing something so well known but, having the original with Sarah Brightman on vinyl and not playing it I really did want it on CD, beautifully done and a delight to play again. However i do have one big grouch. Each time I put it in my basket I got a message that it could not be sent to my address (In OZ). I wonder why, I even tried a site that said posted from Australia, no go. I only got it from the UK and was charged an exhorbitant price in the end. Certainly nothing like when I buy from USA, so Aussie buyers beware where you purchase from.

With 356 four- and five-star reviews already posted, there is not much more to be said about this show or this recording. This is almost the complete musical--good solo lines, strong choral parts and orchestrations that become part of the package, not just background.
I cannot give this a five-star rating, because the lyrics and dialogue are very difficult to understand at times. This is partly because of the accents, and partly because of unprecise enunciation. If you want this as background music, or listen-to-on-the-headset-while-walking, it is fine. But to immerse yourself in the story, you must stay glued to the libretto.

"The Phantom of the Opera" is a show I like, but for the wrong reasons.

For many it's their first musical often because as a global hit there are productions around every corner. The result is a lot of people, including myself, being attached sentimentally to the show rather than for its artistic merit.

That's not to say it doesn't have its moments - despite very self-indulgent and over extended "Music of the Night" has become a standard. The reprise of "All I ask of you" with Michael Crawford's haunting falsetto can be moving and "The Point of no Return" can be a showstopper. "Poor Fool, he Makes me Laugh" is funny and "The Mirror" is a haunting revelation of the Phantom, but this revelation can become tiresome with the over repetition of the melody - unskillfully transposed to add some interest by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The title song also needs to be re-arranged into the 21st century as the synthesized drums have not aged well (there was some improvement in the 2004 film cast). In this particular recording Sarah Brightman can also be unintelligible at points.

Still, there is no denying the music is catchy and hard to dislike (except when it's repeated throughout the show many times). It's no "Fair Lady", but because of its few redeeming tracks, its very high quality recording, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman's definitive performance of their roles and its place in musical theatre history, the 1986 cast recording of "The Phantom Of the Opera" is a must buy for anyone who listens to music.

As a PHANATIC, this double box set is a must-have. I must say that the box is cute, it has the complete libretto (with ALL dialogues)... all inside a little cute box.

I used to have a 80' double K7 set, given by my aunt when she saw the Phantom for the first time back in 90'. The main difference is that those K7 had the COMPLETE DIALOGUES, with NO cuts. And these CDs do not have little dialogues... but it still worths buying.

Had just finished watching the film version and realized how much better the original cast sounded.

This is a wonderful DVD. I got this as a stop gap until the VHS came out on DVD, but now I may not. Yes, the technical aspects are not the best. But it is the filming of an actual performance at the Delacorte Theater. It's not as slick as the production with Angela Landsbury, but Patricia Routledge, later to be Hetty Wainthrop and Hyacinth Bucket, more than holds her own, and the production has those small details that usually are left out of a much-edited and rehearsed film. You really get the feeling you are there watching a live performance. If you are a G&S fan, this is a DVD you must have. It is a gem of a performance, with wonderful actors/singers.

Fantastic CDS based on the stageplay and video. I missed Angela Lansbury as Ruth but it is a fanatastic recording and interpretation of Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta.

You have to be a muscial fan to love this. This play is very fun and funny. This soundtrack has the songs from this wonderful play that you will want to hear over and over again.

The entire "Pirates" score plus much of the dialogue is found in this recording. The voices are extremely appropriate to each of the characters, and the comedy of the score is apparent. The energy is extremely high, which, in turn, excites the listener. I never tire of listening to it.

My favourite performance of this classic Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta. Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstat, and the whole cast are perfect.

I heard this CD playing at a friend's home and ordered it the next day. I have enjoyed listening to it repeatedly and find it powerfully moving and beautiful.

If I were Richard Einhorn, reading all these laudatory reviews, I would be wary. Could this work really be as good as everyone is saying? And, even so, will people still have the same high regard for it fifty years from now?

Yes and yes!

This Voices of Light oratorio is a modern masterwork. Film music only rarely gets this good; I am thinking of Corligliano's "The Red Violin" and Vaughan Williams' "Sinfonia Antartica." But this music is more deeply affecting emotionally than either, I think. And... perhaps it really isn't film music as it stands apart from the Dreyer film quite well.

Well done, Richard Einhorn, well done! I look forward to hearing your other works...

The first time I'd heard this was in 2000, I think. It was being played on a local radio station at about 6am and I was absolutely hooked. I intend to buy this again after posting this review but this time I won't let any friends borrow it!

This music, especially in conjunction with the film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" is both moving and hauntingly The Passion of Joan of Arc (Criterion Collection Spine #62)Richard Einhorn: Voices Of Lightmemorable. Simply put, I highly recommend it.

Voices of Light is powerful and inspiring chorale music and this recording does it justice.

I bought this on a whim, as I like male choral groups. Am I ever glad I bought it! The music is soaring, and the voices are magnificent. I don't know all of the technical stuff about recording, etc.--I just know I love this collection!

If you like strange and creepy sounding music, this is an excellent soundtrack. I heard the ending title and that was the main reason I bought the CD. The music is very hypnotic, and the same tune plays over and over again, it's kind of a weird type of "Chill Out" (I think that's what that style of music is called).

Great CD.

I fell upon this hidden gem completely by accident. I really wasnt expecting all that much from it since I wasnt that thrilled about seeing the movie (I still havnt), but I was veru suprised. Thomas Newman certainly brings a unique sound to the table, and he has distinguished his sound (in my mind anyway) from composers such as Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Howard Shore, and so on.

As I said, I've nver seen this movie, however, the music is good enough that it stands on its own as a listenable album without the need of visual aid to make it work. I get a kick out of just listening to the tracks and conjuring my own scenes in my head. Or, if the occasion calls for it, there are enough mellow tracks to keep me in a relaxed state or provide a good backdrop for a working enviornment.

I also enjoy this soundtrack for its musical inovation. I can honestly say I dont have anything that sounds like this. I dont know if that says more about the compser or about the score as it pretains to the film, but regardless, it is an enjoyable experience. All in all, a pretty damn good score. Give it a shot, its worth it.

I wasn't really too familiar with Thomas Newman's work until this score came out. The only score I had heard was Meet Joe Black and naturally, it happens to be one of my favorite scores. But this one...
Truly one of a kind. I had been a fan of the books so I was looking forward to the movie. I loved the movie and the music...was perfect for this film. Even for the books, out of the ordinary,unfamiliar and down right eerie. This film captured all of those things. Though throughout most of the album, you will hear blaring horns, awkward rhythms, and moody and waving volume, Newman did place a few soft, very peaceful themes for the Baudelaires giving the listener a few moments to calm down and relax.
It is a wonder Thomas Newman DIDN't win the award but you should never let an award define your music or your taste in music.

Got this for my son who is a HUGE Snickets fan. I am a professional musician, and was really impressed by the very edgy and creative writing done for this film. It made us laugh, dance,and listen pensively. Wish I could write like this !

Thomas Newman is one of the most versatile composers of film scores around. His previous works have all been of a very high quality and with Lemony Snicket he certainly doesn't disappoint. Newman has the ability to create a varied score and yet make it entirely identifiable as his own style. Each piece of music fits its corresponding scene of the film like a glove. As unique as the cinematography is, so to is the music.
Newman succeeds in bringing across to the audience the emotion of the characters on the screen, and it's a testiment to his skill and talent that his music can be listened to apart from the film and still be enjoyed as much, if for other reasons.
The final three tracks are particularly special. 'One last look', 'The letter that never came' and 'Drive away' will, I'm sure, take you back to the touching final scene in the burnt out Beaudelaire mansion.
Happy listening to this very special work.

This is a wonderful collection of pieces. Although all 3 pieces are unique
they compliment each other well musically and thematically. A set of music that provides a welcome hour of enjoyment. Overall the CD has a variety of styles that each work for the individual pieces.

The first piece, "Point of Departure", is from 1988 and is modern music. A variety of styles and constructs that may not always be smooth to the ear, but, flow and support the themes. The collection of sounds and musical motives work well in support of the story. There is a consistent set of ideas that challenge and relate to the themes. Strong musical remarks and emphatic statements that deliver emotion and passion. The percussion is used with sharp emphasis and the woodwinds often are used as exclamations. The musical building blocks create tension when needed. Overall the piece has very clear orchestration.

The next piece, "Themes from a Midsummer Night", as one might guess from the title, was originally for a Shakespeare production(in the Berkshires, Massachusetts). The music is accessible and tonal. It helps tell the story and is well suited for its purpose. The 10 sections are constantly moving and engaging, with a very subtle but poignant short section to finish. It is the most enjoyable piece on the CD and is one of Gandolfi's best. The music is clean, clear and very understandable while being interesting and engaging.

"Y2K Compliant" is the final piece. This is another accessible piece reflecting Michael Gandolfi's musical painting of the Y2K scare that occupied much of the media's attention during the turn of the century. It fully conveys the concerns and emotions wrapped up in that issue during that period of time. It has a very strong sense of immediacy and of the impending. The music delivers on it's subject themes very well.

Overall the CD is a pleasurable collection, well produced and packaged. The recording quality is very high and well balanced given the variety of sounds appearing on this recording. It contains very useful and insightful notes. The artwork is relevant and supportive of the themes. The art is also attractive, fresh and captivating. The accompanying text and presentation is clear and understandable. A complete and well developed package. A topnotch product by BMOP Sound and Gil Rose. I am happy to own and recommend this CD.
