Moloko

I was looking around for music that I'm not use to or that I dont hear on the radio every hour. This is a great cd for that. If you like tri-hop this is great for your collection.

Well, first of all, when it comes to Moloko, you need not classify, but simply assign yourself to a special corner of your home and make sure your shoes are of comfort because your feet will disclose from your body and it'll be all a blur in the morning but I assure you, it will not hurt, on the contrary, it will do you unbelievable good. Then, you can go back to organizing whatever it was you wanted to categorize.

Welcome to the world of creepshow funk, music filled with buttery veins of bass and gloomy back-murals of fun house soul. You'd never guess (if you didn't already know) that the spooky rhythms of this quirky album were slapped and crafted by a white European couple. In fact, the title -- "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" -- is supposedly the pick-up line Murphy used when she first met Brydon at a party in Sheffield.

That's the sort of fun you're dealing with here, and the songs are also thrumming with the dark, risky trebles of uncertain affection, too, in keeping with the fact that it was recorded at the start of their romantic and professional unions. Although the songs are infused with the same gleeful experimentation and shadowy flirtations that those kinds of beginnings suggest, there is none of the hesitation and uncertainty you might expect. This might be their debut album, but it sounds like the seasoned work of a couple of people who've already been around the block a few times.

The lyrics are mostly senseless. The rhyme schemes are fluffed and tweaked to hang like dark curtains around a dark, chewy center. The very first track, "Fun For Me," is fun for everyone, an in-your-face inside joke that everyone can get. "Lotus Eaters" features prominently a wickedly creepy industrial backdrop, tickled with strange phantom screams and a repetitive synth-twisted whining voice that sounds like it would be annoying and is anything but. "Party Weirdo" is a spiritually trippy track that sounds exactly like a name like "Party Weirdo" would suggest it sounds. "Ho Humm" makes excellent use of deep undercurrents of sexy (kinda sweaty) soul; and if you listen carefully, those spine-tingling electro-screams are still present.

This album is a great and new kind of funky (okay, well, "new" to those who've never heard them before) that is both vibrant and vicious, fun and frightening, catchy and creepy-crawly. It's not for everyone -- the album thrives on melodies and tones that are as electronic as they are soul-funky -- but I dare say it IS for most. "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" Well, Moloko, it's hard not to.

I was first intorduced to Moloko through the iTunes store. I bought and downloaded the album, and when I listened to it I couldn't believe my ears. Moloko is one of the most unique and delightful bands I have ever heard of. Their off-beat rythyms and quirky lyrics compine with trip-hopish and jazzy rythms to create a wonderfly dynamic and oddly seductive style of music that very few artists can achieve. The tracks range from up-beat and bouncy rytyms to slinking and seductive sounds and intriquing lyrics, together creating a completly unique, intriquing, and occasionally humerous work of art.

Headline: You Look Real Sexy in That Tight Sweater

It's a crying shame that a band like Moloko was enjoyed and celebrated more in the UK than here in America. Especially, around the time that Electronica was kicking off. While most of you listened more to Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers and other familiar characters, Moloko was fighting for attention without ahaving to use a commercial and so far, the only result is that their only American album, Do You Like My Tight Sweater?, was given more attention, while the rest of the albums (I'm still anticipating Things to Make and Do and my main focus album Statues to be released in America, not as an import; I just discovered their album I Am Not a Doctor) was released in the UK. It was around the time the eccentrically fabricated Tight Sweater got the notice it deserved that I heard Moloko on a Batman and Robin CD. (Not only do I still love the single, but the song should not have been truncated to under 4 minutes on this Catalogue album.) The next time I heard about Moloko was from buying The Mystery Men soundtrack (still my favorite soundtrack to date) and ever since then, the go-go-like music and energy caught my ear so much, I wanted to hear more. Of course, not only would I forget to buy what sounds like a masterpiece, Do You Like My Tight Sweater, but around the time I anticipated their release of Statues, it never made it to the states from what I remembered. Now, they release a Greatest Hits album wisely named Catalogue, with a humorous cover. With this album, I beg you to buy this album to discover Moloko's best musical approaches.

Probably before Royksopp before them, Moloko had Roisin Murphy, the lead vox (the Skye to Moloko's Morcheeba, rather), to either bring lyrics and turn the song intro an imaginative adventure, or have her make you want to fall in love with her. With Catalogue, the songs prove that it doesn't fail every time. Either way, their songs never had too much use in being bombastic or musically belligerent. Though some of these songs are unfairly cut and terribly mixed (their new or familiar version of "Indigo"). Now for the other singles, I never got to really hear. One is called "The Time is Now" when Roisin coos "You are the first thing/You are the last thing on my mind", only to create a romantic atmosphere with the music, and make for one of the musical pheromones that somehow work every moment you give it. After that comes "Sing It Back", which brings back the essence of soul, disco, and recovered genre of funk only to bring back the old use of the disco ball (which is later accomplished during their Statues hit "Familiar Feeling", also truncated, but without my notice).

The song that really grabbed my attention was the sexy "Pure Pleasure Seeker", kicked off by an odd choice of a beat, but a sign that Roisin's character just may be one of the women from Venus that Mars couldn't quite handle. In this song, she searches for "instant gratification" "all the way from Venus, invaded by Mars". Just the song that trumps the PCD by not only being obnoxious about the protagonist's freakiness, but proves that rarely can a song as weird, too, can cause this to be a hit in whatever clubs this song invaded. A little odd that the song is turned down by the emotionally mixed, along with the chillout enjoyment "Cannot Contain This". Following afterwards is the heartbroken, as well as the creatively-titled "Bankrupt Emotionally" and the nocturnal "Day For Night", which by the way isn't the best single on the album. Now, those who heard Mystery Men or Things to Make and Do will either love this makeover, or think that this is the worst interpretation of their single. Personally, if I first heard the song here like this, I would have thought it was their lackluster attempt yet.

"The Flipside" is their single where infatuation turns from an attempt a beginning with a Fugees sound to IDM enjoyment, where more added upon the wagon, to make this the album's sleeper track. The song I would have usually skipped, the oddly titled "Where is the What If the What Is in Why?" asks questions, in which half of their questions couldn't quite be answered by What the Bleep Do We Know!? Anyone who has ever questioned things will find some of the famous questions spread all over the table. Then the album closes with two other sleepers: the party plea-for-a-partner "Forever More" and the much mellow melancholy, and minimal use of electronics (far from overdramatic, really.) "Statues" to end this album on a wonderful note. After listening to music that is under an hour (shy of 2 minutes), you just wish you had a little more, don't you?

It's a good thing this album wasn't an import, or else all I would ever hear of Moloko is just 3 singles. I've finally been exposed more to the world of Moloko, not just to the heart and dialogue of Ms. Roisin Murphy and the soundtrack of Mark Brydon. A good start in trying to catch up on the rest of their catalogue. The music is weird, eccentric, and all heartfelt enough for them to slip into electronica and possibly be the world's best kept secret (in America, anyway) in chillout, electronica and possibly in the reincarnation of funk. Face it. Frankly, fun has never really sounded this endearing.

I'll keeep it short. If for no other reason (even though there are plenty, believe me) buy this cd for "It's Nothing" (stunning, haunting, you will be floored!) and "Being is Bewildering" (I'll let it speak for itself). What kind of music do Moloko make? Mark Brydon was once forced into saying it's "a kind of amalgamation of punk and disco". If you ask me, I'll say they make music for people with hearts, minds, and souls.

The most interesting and arresting thing about this band is their quirky creativeness. The songs here are an odd and ambient collection (forever the soundtrack to a marevellous Greek holiday for me now!) Each track has it's own distinct style and personality and yet each is catchy, infectiously melodic and lyricaly, just the right side of sane.
Murphy's voice is full of range and surprise, it can be harmonious and completely shock at once.
Really great and different stuff, a delightful break from the mainstream, I defy you to find any bands doing similair stuff!
Highlight tracks are the beaty and heady, "Bring it Back" and the deliciously insightful "Absent Minded Freinds", a wry look at modern relationships.

UK dancepop duo Moloko are in fine form in "Things to Make And Do," their third blend of acid jazz and trippy electronica. The talented Roisin Murphy and Mark Brydon create a charmingly erratic dance album that sounds like nothing else, yet never fails to draw you in.

It opens with a peculiar piano solo, before kicking into the sexy sax-keyboard of "Pure Pleasure Seeker," and the ominously trippy "Absent Minded Friends." A darker note enters with songs like "Being Is Bewildering," which is technically a more "normal" song, a slow and rather melancholy song based on acoustic guitar and organ. Same with the lower-key pop song "The Time is Now."

There are also some more experimental songs, such as the nonsensical funk of "Indigo" or the creepy psycho-vocals of "If You Have A Cross To Bear You May As Well Use It As A Crutch." "Remain the Same" is perhaps the most experimental, with the vocal sampling and sound of the organ being overwhelmed and sunk by the electronic bleeps.

In this release, Moloko downplays the outright weirdness in favor of a more subtle sound. Call it experimental ultraquirk acid-jazz-funk-house-trip-hop. That more or less describes it. It's not just a fun album, but a richly engaging one with some deceptively simple-sounding songwriting.

Roisin (no, it doesn't rhyme with "raisin") Murphy has an excellent voice for this type of music -- it sounds clear and flexible, while being strong enough to rise over powerful music that could have overwhelmed her. And she brings depth to certain songs like "Mother," where she lashes out at her mother in a restrained manner: "I know somehow somewhere I'll be bumping into you/you see I'm blameless/I had a mother who was shameless/no wonder my life collapsed!" Elsewhere the songwriting is just deliciously bizarre.

Mark Brydon takes charge of the musical backdrop for Roisin's voice. And a fine job he does too, blending organic instrumentation like piano, acoustic guitar and rippling strings with some vocal sampling and deliciously wacked-out beats, sounding like anything from a DJ on acid to the funkier twin of Portishead.

Erratic it may be, but "Things to Make And Do" is also fun, wild and extremely eclectic, switching styles the way most musicians do instruments. It may not be their best album, but it is a wonderfully engaging, trippy one.

I gotta admit that this isn't my favorite Moloko album, in fact in comparison to the remarkable "Do You Like My Tight Sweater" and the equally impressive "I Am Not A Doctor", it's somewhat lackluster. However, Roisin Murphy's vocals are more refined and the song-writing more heartfelt. There are some pretty impressive tracks here though such as the steady-groovin' "Pure Pleasure Seeker", the Timbaland-esque "Absent Minded Friends", the disco-infectious "The Time is Now" and the real-as-it-gets "Mother". Other songs kinda make you want to hit the skip button, but of course this is my opinion. Lyrically, Moloko has developed tremendously--Musically, their sound this go round is too poppish and mainstream. Nevertheless, if you're a Moloko fan you'll dig this!

Although the hype is strong, this record is nothing to write home about. Moloko`s previous albums were experimental, creative and a bit bizarre and offbeat. Their third release, however, lost a part of that touch, presenting a couple of fine moments and a lot of so-so ones. It`s not bad, it has clever and witty songs but the final result is lackluster. Roisin Murphy`s voice still engages, even if the songwriting is subpar and somewhat blah. The singles "Indigo" and "The Time is Now" are both fine compositions, but they are lost in here since the album goes on for too long and its interest quickly fades. All in all, this record is a good one to skip, there`s certainly better things to make and do than listen to it.

that works great together. Laid back but not sleepy.

This double CD compilation naturally comes from Quango, who introduced the world to Zero 7, Kruder & Dorfmeister, and Koop. Zero 7's enchanting Sia contributes a rare remix of "Where I Belong" and ill tracks from Moloko, Chicks On Speed, Truby Trio and a ton others are included on this collection of cool downtempo grooves, electro-house and hip hop soul.

A must to add to any chillout playlist!

It was mostly out of a sense of loyalty and nostalgia that I bought Statues. I'd felt Moloko's third album release, Things To Make And Do, was a shambolic introduction to the band for new listeners lured by dancefloor smashes Sing It Back and The Time Is Now.

Well, what a pleasant surprise, because what turned out to be their swansong may have become my favourite CD ever. The duo didn't just retread the past glories of kook classics Do You Like My Tight Sweater? and I Am Not A Doctor, but overshot them with a maturity which only bolstered their legendary status.

Roisin Murphy's voice is better here than ever. A friend of mine who dropped by when I was playing it said, "Alanis Morissette on weed", and while you can see what he means, the lyrical approach, while no less intelligent, has a charming idiosyncracy that's so far from the North American sensibility as to make comparisons pretty unhelpful.

And Mark Brydon's always inventive arrangements benefit from a more orchestral sweep than previously. When this is fused with electronica, as in the opener, Familiar Feeling (the version here having a two-minute, staccato intro that's pure anxiety) and I Want You, the effect is pure synesthesia - greater than the sum of its parts. Mind you, the strings on this album would make it worth a punt on their own.

Bouncy slices of dance-pop like 100% and Cannot Contain This helped maintain Moloko's undoubted club appeal, but it's the lyrics that'll have you poring over the insert. They've always been leftfield, to say the least, but these "Party Weirdos" can take on subjects such as obsession, lost love and disappointment as well as any torch balladeer - all with Roisin's brittle, delicately-phrased vocals wrapped deliciously around them.

It's one of those rare albums when you'll have a new favourite track every day. Today, that's The Only Ones (track 8).

Even the melodrama of the final track, Over And Over, at nigh-on ten minutes, manages to feel self-indulgent for the listener, rather than the musicians. Indulge yourself - you might not get as much wear out of a CD for quite a while.

I hope this review helps someone who has not decided whether to buy this or not. I came upon Moloko very very recently, because their song "Cannot Contain This" was on Desyn Masiello's compilation. I was absolutely blown away by the song. So I bought this (well, actually a friend gave it to me)and at first I have to accept that it was not what I expected, because what I heard on that compilation has nothing to do with the original track. So if you buy this expecting dance music, you will be disappointed (I understand that Moloko's tracks have been on many dj compilations).

This album mixes different music styles from jazz to electronic and of course, Roisin's voice is amazing to say the least...this music creates a mood that will remind you of something, though you may not know what that something is. Definitely for listening and enjoying, kind of introspective. In my opinion best track: "Forever More". Music and lyrics amazing.

...this band. Moloko have branded a quirky style of modern pop-rock which is infectious, melodic, delivered with Roisin Murphy's delicious and endlessly plyable voice and entirely their own genre.
The beautiful irony of the band is that their quirky, indefinable style is definable by it's quirkiness, but at least no one else can quite muster the style with the belivable ellegance of they. This album is characteristicly, beautiful and bonkers and a joyous daliance with funky eccentricity. Bliss.

I just get this awesome cd as a gift from one cousin of mine and im so happy , Moloko delivers in "statues" deligthfull soul and acid jazz that they have been offering in past productions but now they use electronic beats, sinthetizers , and a few artificial but delicious rithm sections, also the sound of Moloko is so british and therefore it has a natural charm very enjoyable for just a few eclectic audiences, check out "statues" only import edition is available and for this reason is a expense adquisition but it worths cent by cent , or pound by pound, should i say

The number of tracks on this, Moloko's third full-length release, is somewhat false advertising: a handful of the tracks are more like short interludes. But, like the playful title and album cover, Moloko does not fall short of giving you something fresh to listen to. The catchy songs (like "Pure Pleasure Seeker," "Indigo," and "The Time is Now") are rightfully funky; while other tracks have acoustic, almost bluesy tones. Either way, Roisin Murphy's soulful vocals slide over Mark Brydon's intricate programming. The wide range of instruments gives this album its uncomfortableness--but maybe just because the range (Hammond Organ, Strings, Contra Bass Sax and Contra Bassoon mixed with digital drums and loops) is so uncommon. Moby labeled this album as one of his year's Top 5, and I can see why. Although I skip through some of the less melodic tracks, I give Moloko credit for creating an album with such versitality and energy that it is hard to compare this duo to another. And even if you don't enjoy all of the tracks, the album as a whole is fun and funny, with lyrics like the choir-shouting "Rameses! Colossus!" and teasing "You only wanna be in a garage band/You know you wanna give the gong a bang." Moloko knows how to be goofy and how to make a club hit, and makes it look easy; while there are actually two very bright talents crafting the music.

Quite an interesting mix of musical styles. In particular, the track "Indigo" is a pop classic--nonsensical lyrics delivered with absolute confidence, and musical hooks that quickly fasten this song firmly to your brain stem.

I am always amazed at how Moloko continues to evolve from album to album, yet manages to stay interesting. Very few bands can make the same claim. I'll start off by saying this: I'm very elitist and picky about my music. There's VERY FEW bands and artists I listen to on a regular basis. I listen to Moloko and Roisin everyday though, and Moloko is my favorite band, Roisin my favorite solo artist.

This is very complex music. It's quirky and often sarcastic, incredibly bizarre with a lot of attitude.

If you are a mindless club droid who enjoys terrible stereotypical dance music, please, look elsewhere, Moloko has little to nothing to do with that god awful butchering remix of Sing It Back. The original Sing It Back however is a pure Moloko creation, and is by no means a dance song. It's a slow, brooding, sinister love song that is full of pain. It's one of their best, but unfortunately, most people who are ignorant about Moloko think that horrible, terrible remix of the song is the original. It isn't, and Moloko does NOT make music remotely similar to that remix.

The other highlights are Blink, my favorite Moloko song and also one of the first songs I've ever heard by them, with it's fierce drum-n-bass psychosis and Roisin screaming frantically over the track in a restrained yet murderous tone, the emotional inferiority complex of Downsized, the odd alien nurse spoken word of Dr. Zee, and of course the bouyant opener of The Flipside. I love every song on this album, and their minor foray into Drum-N-Bass elements paid off big time. All of their albums are good though. Make sure to check out all of their albums if you like this one. This is by far their most abstract work though.

Also check out Roisin's solo music, which is equally brilliant. Her first album is better than her newest but her newest is absolutely amazing as well. She has such a flexible, gorgeous, unique voice that is so unbelievably rare and such a strange, quirky style you really can't find elsewhere.

But hopefully a Moloko reunion someday? Maybe.

Although they have disbanded, Moloko is one of my favorite bands, and this effort is one reason why. In fact, everything they do is fantastic, and unpredictable; Roisin is a true artist and risk taker in ways that I wish the "pop divas" could be. Roisin probably never will be a superstar, even though she can really sing, and is very attractive. Her desire to create, and not just ape current trends will prevent her from reaching a larger audience, which is a shame, in a way. Get this album, get ALL Moloko albums, and get the fun "11,000 Clicks", the DVD of their Brixton concert (which I am grateful they made before they broke up. Don't believe the first reviewer above, Moloko is
wonderful.

I heard Moloko newest dance version of "Sing It Back" on the radio the other day (1/06) and HAD to have more. So I hit Amazon, read these reviews and bingo - I dropped $45 bucks for two of her CDs (this being one), both imports. Got them today and was INCREDIBLY disappointed. Yes, they are quirky, curious and fun in their own way, but NOTHING like her newest single - nada, zilch, zip. Very experimental, which I applaud, but a bit too experimental if you ask me, and of course I was expecting something way different based on the other reviews. In all honesty, between the two discs (32 songs total!), I MAYBE like ONE...SAVE YOUR MONEY and buy them USED if at all. Really...Trust me!!

I just got this CD and to say it surpasses Moloko's debut, "Do You Like My Tight Sweater" is an understatement. This go round on "I Am Not A Doctor", Roisin Murphy's vocals are more mature and tighter than on the first release, and the production is flawless, mixing various styles together into a cohesive package that is sure to impress any funkateer, pop-fan or clubhead! Highly Recommended!

If you were blown away by Moloko's debut release ("Do You Like My Tight Sweater?"), you'll be even more tickled by their follow up, "I Am Not A Doctor". The fifteen tracks show Moloko at their most infectious -- even if there's not a doctor in the house, you won't mind waiting around for a cure once this album gets under your skin. Although some of the tracks ("Sing it Back", "Caught in a Whisper") are a wee bit more more generically "dance" oriented than those on "Sweater", fans of Moloko's zany improvisiational, Freud-gone-amok lyrics and beats won't be disappointed by such standouts as "Knee Deep", "Be Like You", "The Id", and "Over My Head". Those curious little interstitial tracks you loved on "Sweater" (i.e., "Dirty Monkey") are back here again as well -- "Sorry" gives you a minute and a half of beats a la Kraftwerk circa 1981 with a lyrical delivery Yoko Ono would be proud of. If all this sounds confusing and pretentious, relax, it's not -- "I Am Not A Doctor" is 70 minutes of unabashed fun and groovy beats with intelligence and style. Worth every penny of the import price for the gorgeous cover graphics alone.
