Morgan Heritage

I love Morgan Heritage. I think they're easily the best thing since Bob Marley. They're praised worldwide for their catchy melodies and roots reggae. But where are those gorgeous melodies? What's with the overabundance of hip hop and soul music and the slick production which sucks the heart out of the songs? I want to rock with them on this album, but the songs don't get inside me. I want to hear impeccable Morgan Heritage reggae, but I'm hearing a ridiculously talented band trying too hard to reach out in too many directions at once to a larger audience at the grave expense of their beloved identity. I hope others like Mission In Progress more than I do; but mostly I'm hoping this wonderful band doesn't forget its roots.

Awesome CD. Not that I expected any different. A mix of traditional reggae and street music that blends so well.

I thought this material was dull, predictable, uninspired. Sorry I bought it. Trying to give it away. No success, yet.

This CD rocks! All the tunes speak of faith, love and hope. Not only is the CD entertaining but inspirational as well.

Each of the group members' unique talents resonate as they entertain a group of very fortunate fans in Amsterdam. Regardless, this group would be welcome anywhere!

A roots-rocking, compelling collection of much of the very best music to date of Jamaica's Morgan Heritage, the undeniable "First Family of Reggae", impeccably recorded before a loving crowd in Amsterdam. Gorgeous melodies, intelligent lyrics, musicianship rivaling Bob Marley's Wailers at their very peak, impassioned vocal deliveries, tight harmonies, and best of all reggae as reggae is best heard--LIVE! This one deserves six stars--music as truly lovely as this is as much a rarity as remains the Morgan Heritage family. Whether you're an avid fan of reggae in general or Morgan Heritage in particular, or just curious about what's up with reggae music in 2006, this impeccable recording is a must. Enjoy!

Listening to modern reggae music these days, you can't help but be aware of and somewhat (whether by choice or by their overall activity) of a listener of the Morgan Heritage Family. Be it on an actual album, which they're pretty regular at, releasing a big album every 2 years or so, performing, and they tour constantly or producing, which they are very good at, the Morgans have truly saturated the reggae market and are arguably the best known performing band on the modern roots reggae scene.

However, I'm not a big fan of theirs. They make a style of reggae which for some reason just does not click with me. I'm much more of a fan, in fact, of their production work, including producing for the unknown wicked singer Prince Theo and making the riddim which the legendary Jah Jah City by Capleton and many other good songs (including Love is the Solution by Jah Cure) were on.

But it doesn't take only a fan to realize how fantastic of a live act the Morgans are, Rockaz is, in fact their second live recording, the first being Live in Europe in 2000. This concert took place in late 2005 in Amsterdam on one of their countless persuits through mashing up Europeon stages. It took me a few trips to the record store, but ultimately I decided to go ahead and pickup Live: Another Rockaz Moment (and VP makes it such a warm target, that cover is absolutely gorgeous!). Another factor in my buying it was that the shelves aren't exactly brimming with modern reggae LIVE albums. Its a very unattended to genre within the music which was very popular in the late 90's-early 00's, but has nearly vanished these days amongst current artists.

The music also sounds a little different when done live, so I find myself enjoying a few of the songs which I know, but weren't very fond of from the Morgans' studio albums.

My favorite track actually is the speech, In This Day & Time. The track is just a talk, just a reasoning which leads so nicely into the next track, So Much to Come. That's a great example of the music being different live, as opposed to being done in the somewhat restricting nature of the studio. Sometimes you can hear the greater intensity in the vocal performances. And I remember the song from the Full Circle album, where it basically didnt do anything for me.

Some of the songs which I enjoyed previously from the group are also well done on Live. Especially check Tell Me How Come! over the enchanting Seasons riddim which sounds sooooooooo nice done by the Morgans live. Also loooooooooove the live treatment of Your Best Friend, again, with the very nice lead in. She's Still Loving Me also very nice done. . .
just mark me down as really enjoying the final quarter of the album immensely!

Earlier on check the Intro of course, getting everything going in a very very good mood. Its lead in helps makes the opening song, In Dem Ting Deh even better and the strong one drop on that song (and throughout) just shines! I also really like Live Up, A Man is Still a Man (a song I distinctly remember disliking!), Hail Rastafari and one of my favorite Hertiage cuts, Maskal Square, from the More Teachings album I believe.

Overall, definitely reccomend Live: Another Rockaz Moment! I'm sitting her wishing that their next album would be a live album, these songs sound so much better done in the live treatment and you don't get the typical things you get in reggae with the wheel up or the changing of the riddims. The Morgans seem to make a point of singing the songs how the fans would know them, which is always a good idea! Another good idea is picking up this album.

Morgan Heritage continues to teach us about our past, present and future. At first I was'nt sure if I liked this cd, but the more I listen to it I began to question things i had learned along the cultural lines.....Then I began to "SEE THINGS CLEAR" one of my favorite tracks. The wonderful thing I liked is that you can sing right along with the Heritage because this cd comes with the words to all the songs! "MASKAL SQUARE" and "KEBRA AND THE FETHA" are two songs that got me thinking and asking a lot of "QUESTIONS" (another great track). MORGAN HERITAGE you get two thumbs up for this one! I own four of your cd's and I will keep buying if you keep teaching. Recommended for the cultural listner.

Morgan Heritage's "More Teachings..." has several styles of music that makes for easy listening. Most important the overall message of the CD is positive and uplifting. This CD not only teaches a cultural message, it also teaches the infusion of music styles with Reggae. Leading me to say that the musicianship stands for MUCH praise along with the vocals.

KEBRA AND FETHA is a mellow tune with an R&B sound. However my favorite overall is MORE TEACHINGS... The background vocals are amazingly rigid. Also much praise to the vocals on QUESTIONS defiantly another favorite of mine.

Again overall the CD is great and I would highly recommend it to all. Not just for the Reggae lovers, but I think this CD could even transform the hearts of many diehard R&B and Soul fans.

Morgan Heritage play some of the best roots on earth - this is positive, spiritualy uplifting music with excellent muscicianship to back it up. There's no slackness here.

The album falters, however, in the few rap and r + b numbers. It is good that the band shows the desire to play a range of styles, but I think they'd be better off pulling off a dub version or a ska number.

Yet there are only a few of those tunes, and they can easily be picked off in a mix or by converting to mp3.

I'd recommend it to any serious reggae fan.

This record starts great, fantastic wich every reggae loverf would like it, but after some musics it starts to get slow and more and more american... but still a great buy

Morgan Heritage an eclectic type of reggae with a message in each song. Some about freedom, oppression, education, and status. A nice mellow piece of music.

I purchased this Cd for the title song Don't Haffi Dread and enjoy playing it over and over and... well you get it. But, the rest of the CD is ok, a little too long for me, just give me 10-12 phat cuts and call it a day.But, not a bad CD to own.Support Reggae.

MORGAN HERITAGE are the five children of singer, Denroy Morgan. The American-based reggae band released their first disc, "MIRACLE" in 1995. Four years later the band released their fourth album "DON'T HAFFI DREAD."

On "DON'T HAFFI DREAD" the band continues their slick production of reggae with sweet pop vocals and reality lyrics. The CD starts out luke warm with the first 3 tunes sounding somewhat contrived on songs such as "REGGAE ROAD BLOCK" and "CAUGHT IN A TRAP."

Its not until the CD player's eye sees track 4, the title track, does the album begin to heat up. Both the music and lyrics mix together to create a burning song as PETER MORGAN sings, "Don't haffi dread to be Rasta." His voice is soothing but assertive as he continues, "This is not a dreadlocks thing, Divine creation of the heart." This is simply a great song. I value the sentiment that one does not have to have dreadlocks and all the other superficial Rasta trappings to be a spiritual being.

"HEART OF A CHILD" is another excellent track. The song is about raising children with love so that as adults they may have a better world in which to live. Although the topic could sound corny in the hands of a less talented band, MORGAN HERITAGE manage to put just the right amount of sentiment into the song without ever sounding pretentious or silly. Instead "HEART OF A CHILD" is a very deep and beautiful song.

One of my favorites on the album is the song, "FREEDOM." The song features voice and guitar without any other accompaniment. This acoustic number features the guitar talents of DALTON BROWN who plays both electric slide guitar and acoustic guitar. Brothers ROY and PETER MORGAN trade off singing duties in a very relaxed but emotive manner in this song about racial tranquility and world unity. This simple but effective arrangement makes for a nice change and adds variety to the collection of songs on "DON'T HAFFI DREAD."

Taken as a whole, this album sizzles however I have a few complaints. First, the production style is way too slick. Yes, the rhythmus ARE immaculate but this defeats the purpose of the spiritual and anti-Babylon themes. At times, the music sounds sterile, computerized, and bereft of human emotion making the songs sound generic and too much like every other song I hear on Top 40 radio stations. This is not a good thing, because one of the reasons I prefer reggae to other music styles is because it is different. I want to get away from all the crap that's played on the radio. At one point when I was listening to one of the songs on "DON'T HAFFI DREAD", my girlfriend actually asked me if I was listening to the Backstreet Boys. "Gawd, no!" I screamed. Upon closer listening, she realized the lyrics were too complex to be a Backstreet Boys song.

My second complaint is the length of the CD. The album clocks in at over 73 minutes. Yes, you heard right, I'm complaining that there's too much music on the disc. Now, usually I don't complain about getting too much music for my reggae dollar. But, I say this because some of the songs are weak and probably could have been excluded from the album. These less then great tunes such as "Troding Jah Road" are filler. I usually listen to a whole album at once. If there are a lot of strong, killer songs on a disc, I am more likely to keep it on my CD changer for an extended period of time. That's why I say they should have left off some of the weaker material. This would have made an excellent 45-50 minute album.

These are minor complaints. No matter how polished and commercial they sound, MORGAN HERITAGE is a band that is not afraid to attack sociopolitical or spiritual themes. And, most of the time the craftsmanship and talent displayed in addressing these topics is first-class. And, I've gotta respect 'em for that.

The vocals and musical arrangements are very stirring. Universal lyrics make this CD easy to listen to, with several of the tracks being hard driving "bob your head", no nonsense Reggae. If you like the traditional "Bob Marley style" of Reggae, then you should really enjoy this CD. It's modern Reggae with traditional roots.

This cd contains 18 tracks, out of the 18 tracks I thought 8 were great, 5 were good, 5 were listenable. That's great value for my dollar.

I have enjoyed the music of Morgan Heritage for some time now and this is by far their best work. I also agree that their live show is not to be missed. Congrats on a terrific album and I recomend to any true fan of music!

The CD "Full Circle" proves to me that Morgan Heritage has indeed gone full circle. What a great CD! They are showing their versatility in the different styles that this CD offers, awesome lyrics, and what a beat...makes me constantly want to rock to that hypnotic rhythm regardless where I am listening to it...and I do listen to it quite a lot.

You just can not go wrong with a Morgan Heritage album, especially this one. This album is an excellent representation of Morgan Heritage's range, versatility, and talent. If you love roots reggae with a hint of R&B and a dash of Hip & Hop then this album is for you.

As Reggae fans know, reggae is for all ears (if you just listen). This album is no exception. For example, my brother in-law from Bolivia visited me here in the states and he doesn't speak English nor has he ever heard reggae however, when he heard this CD in my car he absolutely fell in love and begged me for a copy of this CD.

The grooves are great, the vocals are beautiful and the message is strong. I highly recommend this album!

This group is nothing but a gift from Jah. I thoroughly enjoyed this album from start to finish. I happen to love r&b as well as reggae. They have successfully combined the two in a powerful, moving and dynamic package. They are masters already and deliver the clarion call to return to roots, conscious music and love before it is too late.
This group has my complete respect and they are a joy to hear.

A wonderful collection of top-notch music by the very best reggae band today. Ever-brilliant songwriting and tight, inspired musicianship combine to make this Morgan Heritage album not-to-be missed. From the rootsie, melodic "Jah Comes First" to the hip-hop flavored "Gangsta Groupie", there's something for everyone here, and the band sacrifices nothing in their obvious effort to widen their audience. Try this album--if you love reggae, just like it or want to give it a try, Morgan Heritage will always delight and surprise you.

In this latest offering, Morgan Heritage reasserts their formula of "safe" pop-reggae designed to be commercially viable in markets outside the Caribbean.

As evidenced by the R&B tracks, the electric guitar riffs, and the appearance of Bounty Killer on the final cut, it seems as though the producers are trying hard to reach the broadest audience possible. My mistake, I thought I was listening to a reggae album.

On the bright side, highlights include the catchy, uptempo "Hail Up the Lion" and the dancehall remix of "U've Got Me".

For a band whose 1994 debut LP was glaringly mediocre, coming "full circle" is nothing to celebrate. There isn't nearly enough substance here to keep listeners interested long, even if one happens to love the album initially.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Morgan Heritage and I think they're are at the forefront of the Jamaican scene in terms of roots reggae. But to put things simply, this album is crap.
I heard a couple of tracks that sounded promising, but these turned out to be about the only good songs on the album. "The Truth" and "Rebel" are great tracks in their own right, "She's Still Loving Me" is fun soul-styled stuff, but these tracks can't save us from the rest. The opener is just a shocker, and why they needed an even worse remix of it I don't know.
Now I'm all for experimentation, when it works! Here it just sounds like they're trying to do one of every style, and not doing anything very well. Morgan Heritage need to stick to what they know, which is roots, there are just too many poor attempts at crossover appeal here.
If you want to hear Morgan Heritage, pick up "Don't Haffi Dread" and realise that they can do a lot better than a few good tracks on one album.

This is by far one of the best albums in all genres of music I have heard in the last couple of years. This album has amazing songwritting. I've never heard a final product with so much soul, love, and belief in it. Peter and Roy Morgan absolutly sore through this album. One would have to be a fool to not fall in love with "The Truth" on the first listen. Going a bit down the list to "A Man Is Still A Man" great, great song with beautiful harmonies. "A Man In Love" is a very true song. I've played in a few bands in my 20 years on this Earth and the whole idea of women believing their men in bands are being unfaithful is very true. The song is just brought together so wisly and the lyrics make so much sense. Other great tracks include "She's Still Loving Me" "Judge Not" "Works To Do" "Nice Up U Medi" "Anti-War Song" (beautiful beautiful, guitar part almost reminds me of Filter haha) oh man oh man! "In The Ghetto" is truly a great song. Even though the song isn't really about it the melody line and everything of the song paints an image in my head of living on the islands of maybe Hawaii or maybe in the Carribian somewheres. Lastly "Falling Race" is a very catchy song like most of the album, it's pretty self explanatory but has some great singing. Bottom line is if you like the Raggae stylings of Buring Spear, Marley, Tosh, or if your more into the dub type Sublime, Pepper, LBDAS, Slightly Stoopid, you know you know stuff in that neighborhood. This album is bound to captivate you. Also I saw these guys live a while back and if you are a fan of them already and are interested in seeing me live but aren't sure if it's worth the trip...well you already know what I'm going to say. They actually sound better live in person than on the album. So really I can't say enough good things about this album. Gramps you have an amazing vouice, perfect range and lots of soul, Peter you have an amazing vouice as well. The band rocks everything rocks. Maybe we could have a few more guitar solos but heck it's no big deal. Wow get this album!!!

This is the the most recent of the Heritage collection. Not bad, this cd has a mixture of different tunes. My favorite is "A man in love" which showcase peter's voice very nicely. Other songs that get a thumbs up are "works to do" and "Falling race". This cd will grow on you!

Three in One is my second Morgan Heritage CD. I was immediately converted the first time I listened to More Teachings-don't ask where I had been all that while! Anyway, I was instantly converted, and purchased it. I wasn't going to miss any new
release thereafter.

In this Album, the group has again exhibited versitility by "experimenting" with other styles within the genre and even farther. My favorite song? Love 'em all!.. jump around, (the in-your-face, blatantly honest) Ah Who Dem, Man is still is a Man, (the sweet) She's Still Loving Me... love 'em all! Takes you through all the moods: playful, reflective, nostalgic melancholy. Did I hear Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley? Did I hear Luciano, Freddie Mcgregor? I thought I could could hear tantalizing hints of all above and yet the album was
still original in a way that only Morgan heritage can do, and just great. And that bit with the infusion of ragga was refreshing as well.

If you have listened to the Morgan heritage before, then you don't need any further convincing to add this to your collection. For the uninitiated this would certainly make you go looking for more of their works.

The album is not bad.There is about 5 really god songs the other 10 are bellow average.The sound is also bellow average,it's some kind of modern reggae sound,it's not really roots and it's not really dancehall.But if you like songs of Jah and afcourse Morgan heritage you are gonna like the album,this is only my personal opinion and it doesnt have to be right.

Wow!! I Love this CD. This family is very versatile, The song "When will we decide" shows this.The words in their songs really hit me in the heart! and made me have to take a seat and meditate. Tracks like "Mama&Papa" pays tribute to all our parents. I love all the songs on this album, this is the album that made me a fan of their's.

I first heard Morgan Heritage on a local college radio station. His natural singing style really attracted me to explore his music further. This is a great album. It combines roots reggae with some more modern elements. Soulful tunes like Down with You reveal Morgan's diverse vocal talents. A wonderful introduction to reggae music beyond Marley. Check it out.

When listening to this album, you can close your eyes and feel like you were in the arena. A very warm vibration passes through the speakers to your heart as you listen to Morgan Heritage tear it up. If you've never seen MH perform live, this album gives you insight to them as a band. I much prefer their live offerings than their studio recordings. The harmonies are tight and the music is just I-sational. This is one you can listen to over and over, and it never gets old. This is a must have.

The Reggae sensational group "Morgan Heritage" has definitely drawn my attention to this new CD that provides effective lyrical messages in a soft- easy flow beat. Each song enlightens the listener about the culture and lifestyle of the Morgan Heritage family. It tells of their beliefs in RASTAFARI; letting everyone know that you "Don't Haffi Dread" to be a rasta while your "Troddin JAH Road", instead the reality is in the heart. Knowing that JAH will provide is the key to 'overstanding'. I look forward to hearing more conscious melodies from Morgan Heritage and suggest that you get this album as soon as possible - so you too can feel "JAH blessings."
