Mr. Mister

I've always been a fan of the 2 main hits people would know Mr Mister for but decided I needed to hear whether they had anything else good. Based upon what other people had said about the band, I was sure I wouldn't be disappointed and yes, the rest of the album takes you right back to the days of the 80s. It's actually a great read through the album information too so worth it just from the perspective...

Broken Wings and Kyrie are on Itunes. I don't have a reason to buy the other songs on this CD.

I really love this compilation of Mr. Mister, all the songs are great, have good rhythm and harmony and are fun songs to listen to. It takes me back to the 80's and I also feel that Mr. Mister is very underrated they were one of the best groups of the 80's. My personal favorite has always been "Broken Wings", but really I love all of the songs on this disc, they all make me feel really good.

OK, I'll admit it. The only song I remember hearing by Mr. Mister is their wonderful single, "Broken Wings." But now I have this collection and I'll say emphatically that far from being a one-song group, they have a breadth of style and a depth of harmonic and melodic skills that let them come up with this bunch of songs that'll make you tap your fingers, rock your head, or maybe even dance. These songs will certainly make you smile, help relieve your cares and lift your spirits. Dare I say it, this music will make you feel good. It's got a relentless surge of optimism and romance, and a heck of a good beat. This is a gifted group, and their music is a treasure.

As far as I can tell these guys are as clean as a whistle, meaningful and morally correct lyrics along with stellar musicianship and production. These guys had a sound all their own that was both entertaining AND thought provoking, if only they would make a comeback!

This budget collection of Mr. Mister is a must-have for any 80s rock/pop fans. It contains all their most well-known songs, Kyrie, Broken Wings, Hunters of the Night and many more just as good, no filler here. These songs are melodic and highlight the band's tight harmonies and they actually rock pretty well too. The Greatest Hits album has a few more cuts, including the lovely Waiting In My Dreams, but this is a good place to start for the essential work of Mr. Mister.

I heard a recording of a song called "Broken Wings." It was a beautiful religious-type song. I heard it on the radio and, looking it up on the web, this album was the only reference I found to "Broken Wings." I endured one listen and looked around the room for some sharp object with which I could puncture my eardrums. Fortunately, nothing immediately came to hand and my hearing lives on to hear other material. Forget this group and this album (I found that easy to do!). If you ever hear the "Broken Wings" thing I wanted, please be in touch.

It's a shame that Mr. Mister didn't make too many cds! If they would have stayed together a little longer, their music would have really kicked in! I love "Hunters of the Night". Indeed, finding love from fans is what they needed more of. "Broken Wings" is one of their best loved songs. It can really paint pictures. I recited the chorus to one of my customers and he said it was beautiful. I think Mr. Mister's music has a lot of sounds that meant cool and I hope the few cds that they have made will be listened and enjoyed for many years to come. Thanks, guys!

Mr. Mister stopped on music of "fatha" design; Broken Wings is the soundtrack of a generation. The 80's leave their hearts on broken wings and sometimes, when you listen this track, you can imagine - what's going on? - a band of one music only? A mistake or a divine inspiration? MAke your choice.....

One of the best albums I own. The music makes you want to sing along with Power. It is really a pleasure to own this CD.

Every song on this album is excellent and in keeping with the other tracks. I don't think it matters what order you listen to them (I have this version but the British issue has the songs in a different order)) Every song could have been a hit so its easy to see why this album was so sucessful in the 80s.
Its very well done in a very American 80s pop/rock way. The lyrics also seem to be heartfelt and interesting and Richard Page matches that with a great range.

The opening song draws you in immediately with the powerfull synths and drums and lets you know whats in store. Everything about this song is punchy!
The Uniform of Youth
This one has great drums and succeeds in being defiant.
Don't Slow Down
This is arranged so well and pashionately sung
Run To Her
This has a dream like feel to it and a nice contrast to the song before. This love song could have been a hit.
Into My Own Hands
Driving, very spirited and about taking control of your own life
Is It Love
This song is also very driving and desperately sung which suits the lyrics to the core; asking the girl if she feels the same way.
Kyrie
No, not 'carry a laser' as it turns out! A great rock song.
Broken Wings
It is easy to see why Broken Wings was such a hit. It conveys a sense of freedom and the will to mend a broken relationship. It is also very well arranged with just the right amount of synth.
Tangent Tears
This has a softer sound to it, a nice pop song about unrequited love.
Welcome To The Real World
The titled track builds into a dramtic chorus, welcoming one that has just been born to the 'real world'. Good ending too.

Sorry, but there is not that much that's bad about this album so get it if you want it!

I bought this album released in 1985 because of super hits BROKEN WINGS and KYRIE but after listening to the whole album more and more songs on the album captivated me. First pick is RUN TO HER well-structured slow moody ballad which could have been another hit. Techno-pop styled UNIFORM OF YOUTH and DON'T SLOW DOWN are also the album highlight of the first half. On the whole the album direction is somewhat between SURVIVOR/STARSHIP catchiness and MIKE&MECHANICS/GENESIS vocal style.

Verdict: Catchy yet deeply melodic masterpiece.
Rating: 96 out of 100
Recommended for: Wide range of mid-80s pop rock fans and particularly if you love Survivor, Starship, Mike and the Mechanics, Trillion, Pride of Lions and Mecca.

Here is a true story. A friend of mine stole this CD from a music store back in the 1980s. He did it on a dare, and it was completely uncharacteristic of him -- he has never repeated this illegal activity as far as I know. He probably picked this title because it was popular and contained a few "catchy" songs, or maybe it was just fate -- he reached out and there it was! However it happened, he played this CD over and over again in his car, like a badge of honor, like any other dumb teenage boy trying to impress his equally immature friends (myself being one.)

Soon after, something disturbing started to happen. The songs, so upbeat and memorable at first, began to reveal their true core -- vacant, mindless, shallow, designed to bring you in and leave you with nothing. Soon every false note and thin vocal chord sent shivers up our collective spines. We felt like Alex from A Clockwork Orange, trapped and forced to listen to music. But unlike Beethoven's beautiful Ninth symphony, you didn't have to be brainwashed into being repulsed by the music of Mr. Mister -- brainwashing wasn't necessary.

Eventually, using the last bit of willpower available to him, my friend ejected the disk from his car radio and flung it into the rear of his ugly Dodge Aries station-wagon. We all took turns throwing it around, beating on this disk like a rented mule, as if we were physically expunging the demons that had haunted us for previous few weeks. Eventually, the CD -- scratched beyond repair and recognition -- lay on the car floor. Occasionally, we might pick it up and throw it around, but we never removed it from the vehicle. It remained there for years -- a sobering reminder of how bad music could get.

One of the best albums I own. The music makes you want to sing along with Power. It is really a pleasure to own this CD.

I was very pleased with the CD I got of "Mister,Mister." I would buy from this vendor again.

Mr Mister were the first band I liked enough to spend money on, and though my tastes have completely changed since then, I still can't resist a singalong to my old faves. Mr Mister, although slightly preposterous, pompous (especially the third album) and still known really only for "Broken Wings", knew how to write an energetic, dynamic and strangely funky tune, with a smidgeon of lyrical interest that should be no embarrassment to anyone who likes them.

Mr.Mister has that 80's taste I like. This album is worth the money. It has one song from Mr.Mister's first album (I wear the Face) and a lot from their third and last album (Go On) which both albums are out of print. I really enjoyed this Album very much because it's not availible in the us, only in the UK where it was made. It's one the best 80's band ever!

mr. mister send to us a sort of hope, a missing love, something to remember, a "broken hopes" of the only thing that hurts : love and time. What only 'remains out' to me, like we say in NYork, go ahead boy, time's up!!! and love will be short. That's it...

The first time I heard Mr. Mr., I could really apreciate the essence of their music, get in touch with the feeling of an old fashioned emotion, L-O-V-E, because of the meaning of the lyrics and the spiritual concept of their rythm.

I got this album when I was in college. Like some of the other viewers, my favorites are "Dust" and "The Border." Other than these slower ones, the upbeat songs have awesome instruments and sound. I bet they would even be a hit on the radio today (they only play the 2 or 3 most popular).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the listing of tracks has 11 songs. The cassette I bought "way back when" only had 10 tracks (missing the song "Bear my Soul"). Does the CD have an extra song that I haven't heard before?

Some people hear a hit album and hear only hits. Others hear something more. And those people are the ones satisfied by Go On after the "progressive pop" promises only hinted on Welcome to the Real World, fully realized here. Mastelotto's scary drumming, Ferris's blistering oddly-tuned guitar, Page's soaring expert vocals, Steve George's textured keys and songcraft... all contributing to a set of beautiful & meaningful pop songs. Great stuff.

No shock that Pat later joined King Crimson, or that Rabin filled in for Ferris on the 4th album. Wouldn't modern Yes loved to have pulled off an album like this?

Rather than record "Real World 2" the band made the album they wanted to. 20 years later I still listen and love it. I have a bootleg of Pull -- and these guys were going to take it even further. Too bad RCA pulled the plug.

Listen to "Dust". I still get chills... long after most of my other albums of the era have long placed into storage. A legacy work. One of the best, if not the best, of the 80's.

...because I thought this album was one of the best of the entire decade, and nobody bought it. At least on Amazon, I can see that at least 6 other people revere it the way I do. The progression from its highly successful - and highly trendy - predecessor, 1985's Welcome To The Real World, was absolutely stunning. The cover art set the tone for a huge change, and the music, both lyrically and sonically, confirmed it. To my knowledge, "Dust" is the only song written as a plea to American soldiers to reach out to children they may have fathered during wartime. I still get chills when I hear "Out of the dust reach tiny hands/to touch their fathers in other lands." While the sound does have a heavy dose of 80's synth sound, Mr. Mister uses that sound as well as anyone did, and songs like the aforementioned "Dust", the stark "Bare My Soul", the thoroughly underrated single "Something Real" and "Watching The World", all deliver a sound that still sounds fresh. "The Border" is definitely one of popular music's lost songs - I think that it's the band's best song, a gorgeous midtempo ballad that subtly recalls the crossroads - indicating we must persevere and "go on", but the chorus says to us "I am standing here/my arms open wide/I am waiting here/heart in my hand on the border." Considering that the band largely disappeared after this album, the distant horizon depicted on the cover along with the final song's desire to wait and persevere seems a fitting epitaph for a band that disappeared from the public's eye far, far, far too soon.

I don't know why, but I love Mr. Mister's music. I love "Go On..." because it is a work of musical perfection. Which is what one might expect of session musicians. Unfortunately RCA have deemed this record as unworthy of remaining in print, which now only prints a "Best of" and "Welcome to the Real World." I would proclaim that "Go On..." is the better of the three albums they released. It may not have been as sucessful as Welcome to the Real World, but in musical composition, this album was far more advanced and deserves more recognition.

Mr. Mister, for reasons unknown to the world, decided to abandon the uplifting 80s pop sound that the World had come to expect from them, and even though they had the lineup of an 80s pop band, they somehow managed to elevate synth to an instrument that could produce a serious sound. The album travels down a much funkier road than that of it's predecessors. It also sees Richard Page using his chords to their best advantage. This seems strange because they always seemed so amazing on the other records. How could they be better? If you find a way of acquiring this CD if purchased you'll understand what I mean.

The superior tracks in my opinion are Healing Waters, Dust, Something Real (Inside Me/Inside You), The Tube, Bare My Soul, Power Over Me, Man of a Thousand Dances, and of course The Border.

Healing Waters is a spiritual masterpiece which employs the use of a Gospel Choir. If you're interested in sampling the album before you buy, try the iTunes music store to hear the tracks available on the best of. On the Irish store, the best of has different tracks if you wish to hear others. You can do the same with Something Real which shows Richard Page using his Voice to it's best ability. Dust is a beautiful ballad featuring excellent percussion parts by Pat Mastelotto (who I believe really stands out on this album alot more than on previous.) On Dust Steve Farris really shines also.

Here, I have to say that as a guitarist, I respect Steve Farris a lot as one of my favorites, I think he is underated and should be known to more guitarists around the globe who listen to Yngwie Malmsteen to open up their eyes on how laid back guitar playing can be much more powerful than some hour long shredding solo. Steve is the best on this album for me. He writes interesting rythym parts, shows he can really play guitar even though he is masking his virtuosity in soloing underneath Floyd Rose abuse. He makes excellent use of volume swells and general rythym playing on this album, and with my intentions of becoming a session musician, I hope I can develop the wide range of styles and talents that he uses. Steve if you ever read this you are an inspiration in my books!

The tube is an interesting funky number, it disses television in a very strange way, it has a cool solo. Bare my soul is a fast number by Farris, John Lang (Lyricist for the entire album) and Page. It is a harder song, though distortion free, it has a heavier feel to it. Power over Me has a very spiritual feel to it, though I find the choice of Synth sound as an odd one, but it works, and has a beautiful Sax (I assume) solo which suits the music. Interestingly about this song, though the chord progression seems to be minor, which sounds dark, the vocals contrast this darkness and take a more major influenced line which creates a beautiful blend of tone and melody. Man of a Thousand dances is an unusual upbeat funky and spiritual ballad with an interesting lyric choice. The vocals take an interesting direction which makes for a genius song. The Border is possibly the most beautiful ending an album can have. Here we have Steve George revert to a good ol' acoustic piano. This is a perfect choice. It sets the mood for the ballad. The lyrics seem a little too cliched for this particular song, but they are sentimental and suitable none the less. Farris adds little flourishes in with use of a delay pedal in the opening sections. This is the ultimate closer for my tastes. The song begins slowly and maintains the same tempo, but becomes more upbeat when the percussion enters. Unfortunately, the song fades out.

Which leads me to my single complaint about the album. Too many god damn fade outs. They are fine some of the time, but they get tiresome. I like to hear the end of every composition. With 8 of 11 songs fading out, I find this annoying. Ideally, no fade outs, but I'd meet them half way with one or two, not eight!!!!

This CD is a 10 out of 10 though. Just if you ever can, re-release the album without fadeouts! Then, I would give it 11/10 for the 11 tracks that should have made more of an impact on the music buying public.

"We must go on now"

Go on..was the Misters third and final commercial release and one with a more stripped down and mature sound than the intense Welcome To The Real World. Maybe the world wasn't quite ready for them to change so quickly having just reached their commercial height, or the more thoughtful style was too out of step with the hair metal pap that so dominated 1987, but whatever caused its lack of success it wasn't due to the album. The song writing is exemplary, the vocals better than ever, the variety much improved over the previous albums and the production left enough room for Steve Farris to really show people how he can play the guitar!

I would urge anyone that has an ounce of musicality and an interest in what GOOD AOR can sound like to purchase this album. The sad fact is that this shouldn't have been the last album. Although Steve Farris left before the tour, and was replaced by Buzz Feiten, the Misters actually recorded a fourth album "Pull" which can be found floating in the grey areas of cyberspace. It really is worth a download if you can find it. Many have claimed it was too experimental but only one track, "Buddy" really falls into that category. The remainder was stunning. "Waiting In My Dreams" can be found on "The Best Of..." but "Close Your Eyes" and "Wait A Lifetime" could easily have replicated the success of "Kyrie". It also features Trevor Rabin of Yes on some tracks, giving it a sound not disimilar to "Talk" by that band.

Not at all bad music. Very entertaining forgotten wave music. Sure brings back a lot of memories. I write this review to let others know that there is a hidden treasure in this album that is worth giving a chance to.

Why not five stars then? Probably, because their second album was a bit better, and also because I am a harsher than average critic. But this album is certainly worth picking up, especially if the spirit of the hunter lies within.
