Mya

This is one of the greatest examples of Musical Theater. The songs in this Film couldn't haven't been done any better than besides the greats; Fred Ebb and John Kander. Its sad that it took about thirty years after the Broadway Production for it to be made into a movie. But I guess it was worth it to get such great stars as Catherine Zeta-Jones, and newly introduced to Musical Theater, Queen Latifah.

I sadly would have to say that from what I have heard of Liza Minnelli's performances of songs in Chicago, are not as great as Zellweger's were in this film. Although Liza does a great "All That Jazz", Renee shows Liza how to get the number "Roxie" done.

One thing I really like about this soundtrack is that is olden type of music, and its not remastered old songs, but it old songs performed by Modern artists, and presented in Modern, "High Definition" audio quality. Its like Michael Buble, he does the old standards, but manages to share them with the old standards to us with great, new, modern, quality. And thats exactly what this film does, It still presents the great old classics; But does it in a great modern, and perfect audio quality way.

One part I think that could have been done better by someone else is the part John C. Reiley. From what I Heard he is a singer, but from what I have seen in this movie, he isn't the greatest one. "Mr. Cellophane" is one of my favorite songs from this film, and I think John C. Reilly makes the song look like a joke. It's supposed to be a very touching song, and I don't think his vocals met those requirements. And also, I think the whole vagabond outfit for his character was completely dumb. I think the whole lonely stage setup was great, but the whole, homeless, vagabond thing, just made the song look like a joke. When it really is a very touching song.

Besides that, the film and soundtrack where great. And I loved the two extra tracks on the soundtrack by Queen Latifah, and Anastasia are great.This album completely deserved the Grammy Nomination it got, and I would recommend this album to any Musical Theater fan.

The soundtrack arrived within about a week. (I never opt for faster delivery.) It was exactly what I wanted and, as far as I can tell, plays flawlessly.

This music is so faithfully performed by the very talented ensemble that it brings back the 1920's vividly. Each song reflects a specific style of the music popular at the time. After listening to this CD I had to see the movie (which was also terrific) and then I had to buy the sheet music. Usually I simply enjoy a CD and move on. This one reached me.

The cd is very good. There are only songs, no speaking parts really, even ones that precede certain songs. There are a couple of songs that are not in the movie or that were inspired by the movie. The first time you listen to it if you haven't read the fine print it kind of throws you for a loop. I highly recommend it for all who love the movie!

I truly loved the music with the movie is excellent. I was very impressed of the singing of the movie stars.

The movie was sensational, it seems almost impossible to capture all of it in a soundtrack, but they did a wonderful job of it. Every sngle song captured the spirit of the movie, it was almost like going to a broadway musical because of the quality of this music. Catherine Zeta- Jones did a amaizing job of singing the songs "All That Jazz", "Cell Block Tango", "I cant Do it Alone",and so many more. This music is almost magical, I would recammend this soundtrack for anyone!

If you loved the movie Chicago I'll garenty that you'll fall in love with the soundtrack. You can never get to bored of "all that jazz" with Catherine Zelta Jones singing it, you can tell that she's the real star of the soundtrack. Don't be surprised if you run across "The cell block tango remix" and all that junk, it just didn't blend in with all the other songs, I always avoid it.

I'm surprised by the enormous volume of glowing, 5-star reviews here. This soundtrack isn't THAT great. Maybe I'm biased. I was fortunate enough to see "Chicago" on Broadway in early 1997 (the matinee right before the cast walked over to Radio City for the Tonys, of which it won 3 or 4). That was a few months after it opened, with the original revival cast: Bebe Neuwirth as Velma, Ann Reinking as Roxie, James Naughton as Billy, Joel Grey as Amos, Marcia Lewis as Mama Morton, and D. Sabella as Mary Sunshine. Right afterwards I bought the CD and have listened to it many times since. So I can't help but be stuck on it. (I even have the 1975 Broadway recording, which I like though not as much as 1997.)

This soundtrack simply does not feature the vocal chops to be found on the Broadway recordings. The music itself is comparable, but certainly not an improvement. And the rap version of "Cell Block Tango" is a too-obvious attempt to take modern pop "stylings" (if you can call it that) into consideration when they are NOT at all relevant here. (Okay, more bias, since I despise rap.) Plus that last track with Anastacia, or whatever her name is, is awful. She tries so hard to sound like a modern R&B singer, but she can't do it. (And, again, I hate modern R&B, so yet another pre-disposed strike for me).

I liked the movie, but it (and the soundtrack) don't hold a candle to the Broadway "original revival" cast. I highly suggest getting that recording instead. You'll hear Bebe Neuwirth wail even better than Chita Rivera did, and James Naughton blows away Jerry Orbach (and certainly Richard Gere, by FAR).

And the DVD version isn't worth it. It really only has a 10-minute featurette that I'm willing to bet is on the DVD that's about to come out. And I can see that some people here have taken Richard Gere too seriously when he mentioned that Renee Z has a Billie Holiday quality to her voice. I laughed when I heard it then, and I laughed again when I see people repeat it here (as if it's their own words--yet they spell her name Billy). Not that Renee is bad (nor is Catherine ZJ), but by no means is she anywhere near the ballpark Billie Holiday is still in 45 years after her death. (And before anyone else takes Richard Gere too seriously: no, Catherine Zeta-Jones isn't really like Dusty Springfield, either).

Wonderful sound track! Anyone, who enjoyed the movie, will certainly relive the experience listening to the CD. I cannot wait for the DVD to be released in August.

Ever since Aaliyah's death(7 years ago) ppl over,over hype her!! Maybe the same thing will happen with Mya.

One of the few female R&B singers whose later efforts are probably her best, this 1998 debut from Mya is some of the most boring and uninspired contemporary R&B of the last decade. Full of trite lyrics, thinly disguised samples, a couple of choice words snuck in here and there and near-zero vocal prowess. Even though some of the ballads have nicely arranged backgrounds, they're not much better than anything else on the album. Not to call her a greatly talented artist, but even later songs like "Case Of The Ex" and "My Love Is Like...Wo!" are more engaging listens than anything to be found here.

This CD is kinda slow. Nothing really stands out about it. The only songs I really enjoy are Movin On and All About Me. Maybe over time, the others will grow on me :)

Mya has been in the music industry for quite some time, and she has many contemporaries who have much more popularity than her. I have theories as to why this is so. First of all, Mya's singing voice lacks personality. If an artist has an average voice, it is important for them to have creative material to include on their album to accentuate their voice, and to separate them from other artists. Mya has never been able to do that. All of her music is basic, typical R&B. "Moodring" furthers my point. This album is neither bad nor good, but it's swaying more so to the bad side. This album is inundated with R&B songs we have heard a million times prior to the release of this album. When track 17 finished playing, my mind quickly drifted on to something else. If you just finished listening to an album that has 17 tracks, there should be some remnant of that album in your mind somewhere. Such was not the case with me and "Moodring."

I love the title of the album, "Moodring." That one word says so much. So, when one thinks of a moodring, they often think of different feelings, different emotions. This album does have quite a few moods. There are also all tempos of music here: uptempos, midtempos and ballads. Which are the best? I'd say the midtempos. Mya doesn't have a strong voice, and personally, after awhile, it kind of irritates me for some reason. However, she does know her vocal boundary and she doesn't push herself vocally, and I commend her for that because so many artists don't do that.

"Fallen" is easily this album's best track. I enjoy this song with each listen. It was released and had moderate success. The video is also very cute. It's about being in love with a guy and not minding one bit. Part of the lyrics are "Fallen, head over heels I've fallen, and I can't get up, don't wanna get up, because of love." "Anatomy 101" is the second strongest track. Here, Mya sings in a very sexy voice and it's enjoyable to listen to because she doesn't sound half bad and the production and lyrics are also worth mentioning. Be mindful, Mya gets quite raunchy on the chorus of this song. The rest of this album is forgettable, to be blatant. "My Love is Like Whoa", "Take A Picture", "Free Falling" and "Things Come and Go" are all decent tracks, but simply lack creativity. Mya apparently isn't afraid of confrontation with others. Listen to "Whatever B****" and "Step" and you'll understand what I mean. Mya lets a female know that she will fight if anyone tried to talk to her man.

If you just MUST have a Mya album, "Fear of Flying" is better and more focused than "Moodring", so I would recommend that. Mya needs to step outside of the box she's in and try some new things if she wants to ever reach the success of her more popular contemporaries.

I love this album!!! this album and Mya's Fear of Flying have a tie for her best album. Tha songs are hot and the title totally describes the different moods and tones of the songs. Taste This,Hurry Up, Anatomy 10N1, Free Fallin', You, Things Come & Go, and Step all could've been great singles. She has funky, weird sounding songs that r also great: Late, whatever Bitch. Sophisticated Lady is also funky, kinda good but that's the ONLY SONG ON THE ALBUM THAT I DON'T LIKE.Even though i don't like that song, you can still put the cd on and listen to every song without skipping any song. I also like the bonus song :Real Coompared To What (song for coca cola commercial with Common). This cd doesn't dissapoint.

I had this CD when it first came out but I misplaced it. I HAD to buy it again. I love Mya and I especially love this CD.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire was the second in James Newton Howard's big Blockbuster Disney scores. First he did Dinosaur & Atlantis was followed by Treasure Planet. I found Atlantis to be an enjoyable score that successfully captures the adventure of an undersea voyage and the mystical heart of Atlantis. What weakens this score slightly is the lack of a cohesive main theme, and the fact that the score opens well into the movie as opposed to the beginning of the movie with the sinking of Atlantis, the cd starts at the beginning of the submarine voyage. The pop song is worthless and could easily be ignored. I believe that Treasure Planet was a better score, but Atlantis was and is another enjoyable step in Howard's musical resume.

When I saw this movie I was really surprised with the way Disney had chosen to tell the story. This is one of the few Disney movies that actually qualifies as a real family movie, because it can actually be enjoyed by all members of the family and not just by the kids. There are no suddenly burst into, sing-along-songs. There is only the story and it's told in the same way as in many Japanese anime movies.
The music does a huge part in all this. So unlike Disney, there are no particuar, overly sugary themes - the tracks are very mature, and they perfectly complete the pictures on the screen.
Ironically, this is one of the biggest drawbacks with this CD, because it suffers from scene-to-scene music, like so many others in this genre.
A good excample is the track "The city of Atlantis", the scene where you get to see the first wideshot of the city in all its splendor. This where the theme picks up and becomes bombastic and really emotional. This was the track that made me want to own this CD. However, this scene is approx 15 secs long, which means that when the music builds up an all the different instruments are added, ethnic percussion, strings, horns, choir, the whole ensemble - just when it's about to reach that climactic part where you get the feeling of "Yesss!!!", the music stops abruptly and is reduced to a lingering. This is where you get the feeling of "Nooo!!!". You could've sworn that this part you heard when you saw the movie was at least twice as long and yes, it did give you goose bumps. This is the essance of anti-climax and this CD is packed with 'em. Any self respecting album producer should and would avoid this by actually putting some effort in adapting at least the various themes to "listening only" so they work without the pictures!

After listening through this CD and having heard all my favorite themes chopped up and spread out across 17 tracks I was so frustrated that I made my own fan edit using my array of various sound tools. The result gave satisfaction a whole new meaning, and I believe even James Newton Howard (the Man) would be pleased.
But since not everyone can do a remix to their own liking, I just can't love this CD.
So my advice is:

If you love this music, I suggest you buy the movie, and listen to it the way it was meant to.
If you are addicted to it, listen before you buy the CD! It might not be all that you hoped for.

Sure wasn't for me...

After his tremendous success with Dinosaur, James Newton Howard returns scoring another animated film, and this one is a knockout. The soundtrack opens with "Where the Dream Takes You", a pop song written by James Newton Howard and Diane Warren and performed by Mya. Although the song is not bad, I usually skip it and head straight for the score. 2 main themes are found here. The first is a solid fanfare that opens in "The Submarine" with lots of brasses and percussion. This theme returns in small parts in various sections of the score, most notably in "Going After Rourke". The other theme is a primarily choral theme found in "The Crystal Chamber" and the later tracks, primarily "Atlantis". A secondary theme is found in "Milo's Turned Down" and "Milo Meets Kida", which is the melody for the song "Where the Dream Takes You". The first half of the score is full of militaristic, march-style music with plenty of strings, brass, and percussion. The second half of the score is mainly exotic in nature and here is where the chorus really kicks into high gear. The action music is incredible, especially in "The Leviathan" that takes you on an adventurous ride. Another slam bang adventurous score from Howard, who keeps impressing me more and more.

This soundtrack is really breathtaking. Listen to it with your eyes closed and dream away on the magical sounds of the ocean.

I use movie soundtracks as background while I work and enjoyed Atlantis so I bought the soundtrack. After listening to it a few times I have to say it is one of the few pieces of music I am just completely ambilivent to. It doesn't get bad anywhere, but it never catches my attention either. The pop song is a throw away, and the score just doesn't grab me. Nothing really steps out good or bad, it just doesn't stick in my mind at all.

Mya isnt a great singer but thats OK!!! Work with what you got and she does that flawlessly on her 2nd album. The 3rd album i could pass on but this one is the best that shes every done. Such ashame her fans will never get to hear her 4th CD as she is record lable-less now.

Mya may not have the best voice in the industry, but she can put together a pretty solid album. This album went in a different direction of her first album. The album was strong in the beginning and end and a few fillers in the middle. I enjoyed "Case of the Ex", "Best of Me", "Can't Believe" which should've been a single, and "Man of My Life". Mya really spread her wings on this album. Can't wait for her next CD.

I love this cd!!! it is so great!! i loved mya's music eva since her first video...this is tha total opposite of what happens to most artists on their second album (it usually sucks) This is without a doubt in my mind, Mya's best album!!! I just love the cd...surprisingly enough, I think my sister loves this album more than me because she's always trying to take it.

Fear of Flying begins with strong up-tempo tracks, but as the album winds (and slows) down, results are mixed.

This album left me speechless. The best album ever from an amazing singer with an amazing voice.

This album by mya is very good one but it has some not really great tracks, then the the one's that touch ur heart. No tears on my pillow is one of the best.

I love "My First Night With You" because it is a slow song and I love slow songs. Mya is an excellent singer with extravagant talent. She has the voice of an angel;she was the perfect one to sing that song.

Mya is a beautiful girl with an amazing voice. Her debut album is one of my all-time favorites. Other than the fact that it features Sisqo and Silkk The shocker among many talented featured artists on the album, Mya has a grace tht is unmatched. Get this CD as well as her first album, and her new upcoming one.

I just think that she is good looking and i like her voice. And if she can sign like that then i would like it if she can sign and send me her releases that she has had.

Don't listen to "It's time someone kept it real" over there. The remixes of "Lady Marmalade" by Thunderpuss are the best! Here's a tracklisting, review, & rating of each:

Lil' Kim, Pink, Mya, and X-tina are all hoes who had to destroy "Lady Marmalade" by doing a cover of it. This butchered remake turns an R&B funk classic into a watered down pop song that has been guzzled down and vomited back up. Everyone has forgotten this pathetic remake because it was garbage. If you want to be hardheaded and get this single anyway, then that'll be your problem to deal with. I'm just keeping it real.

"Lady Marmelade" was re-made by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya & Lil Kim for the 2001 movie release of "Moulin Rouge". The original version was produced my Missy Elliot, which gives this classic a modern hip-hop feel to it. This is the version that opens the single. Track 2 through 4 are all Thunderpuss Remixes. And did they do an amazing job!!! These remixes are pure tribal, tribal, tribal (they have somewhat of a different sound than other Thunderpuss remixes, I feel, but not in a bad way). Great drums. Great re-production. Track 2 is the Thunderpuss Radio Mix, which is followed respectively by the Thunderpuss Club Mix & Mixshow Edit. It would have been nice if a Thunderdub and/or Thunderpuss Tribapella were also available on this cd/commercially (they can be found on a promo single). But still, this single is so worth the money. Before this song the only girl i have heard was Chritina. I knew Missy from the song "I want you back" with Mel B and "Get ur freak down" from the soundtrack of Tomb Raider. I though she was just a featuing inger who always sing some words in other' ssong. But after this gr8 song i met all of them and became a hughe fans of them, specially a Pink fans! This song is gr89 sexy, full of Girl power! Even when the girls have a eally weird makeups, they all looks wonderfull. Definetly a erotic french dream of any man! They need to make from this single a DVD single or at least includde the video which is to me the best of the year!
