Night Ranger

You know your getting old when Night Ranger is played on the olddies channel! Cool music though.

Night Ranger was a solid pop-rock band that charted hits from 1982-1988. This album compiles all of those songs, although some of them never saw the happier side of the Top 40 charts. The big tunes are here, such as "When You Close Your Eyes" (a personal favorite), "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" and "Four In The Morning." Also included are "Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight," "The Secret of My Success," and "Rock In America." Needless to say, Night Ranger was billed as a rock act (and some of the tunes here attest to that), but they flourished with power ballads. The granddaddy of them all, "Sister Christian," is also on this album, but it wouldn't be a greatest hits package without it.

If you like your rock a little bit heavier than REO Speedwagon but not quite as heavy as Def Leppard, Night Ranger will suit all of your needs. They are a product of the 80's and deserve any accolades that they've received for being as such. I highly recommend this album to fans of Night Ranger as well as anybody who enjoys tunes from bands like Survivor, Bad English, and any of the power ballads that ruled the 80's.

Night Ranger had some likable rock songs, but they especially had some great ballads. This CD has both. Some of their best-known (and highly recommended) rock songs are "You Can Still Rock In America" "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" & "Secret Of My Success." On the lighter side, one has to appreciate "Sing Me Away" "Goodbye" and their biggest hit "Sister Christian."

Lead singer Jack Blades does especially well to not be too whiny or too screechy on the ballads, which can be a downfall to a number of other hard rock ballads from this this time period. This is the best of what the band has to offer and these are some good offerings.

This is a CD that should belong on any music lovers list. Night Ranger is one of he best bands of all-time. With songs like "Sister Christian", "Goodbye", and "When You Close Your Eyes" as well as many other classics. This is a great CD it has been remastered very well so the sound quality is great. I highly suggest that you buy this CD today.

Night Ranger is one of those good time bands that are best represented by a Greatest Hits collection. The songs here are all great with the exception (for me) the awful David Foster produced "The Secret Of My Success."

Good Stuff! It's not meant to be earth shattering or life altering. It's meant to be fun!

As a end note....Both Night Ranger's 1997 "Neverland" and 1998 "Seven" are worth a listen.

I look at all the song titles from this release and they're all solid tunes. There's not one that I would want to skip to get to the next song. NR is probably one of the most underrated rock bands from the 80's. They're still around and occasionally putting out new music, but the bulk of what they've done and done well is found in their first five albums. Midnight Madness was, of course, their big breakout record, with Rock In America and the smash Sister Christian. Many people didn't bother to scratch beneath the surface of this "power ballad" group to discover that they wrote great songs, with great dual lead vocals, and hot guitar playing. This album, in my opinion, is one of their best, although I think all of them, through Neverland, are great rock albums.

Love this album. Takes me back to another time every time I put it on. Every song is infectious, with the highlights You Can Still Rock in America, Why Does Love Have to Change, Touch of Madness, When You Close Your Eyes. I've always thought the assemblage of talent in Night Ranger (Keagy, Blades, Gillis, Watson, "Fitz" Gerald) was second to none. Only recently replaced my worn out cassette with a CD. However, I was extremely disappointed in MCA's packaging of this Disc. No liner notes, other than the song titles and the producer's name. Would be cool to see a nice re-master package for this disc, as well as Night Ranger's other titles.

Needed to updat fom my 80's cassettes to C.D.'s. Amazon offered excellent prices and bulk specials. The C.D.'s arrived on time and in wonderful condition. I would use this site again and suggest it to my family and friends.

Everyone who listened to rock or watched MTV in the 80s knows the hit balad Sister Christian from this CD. But there is much more to this CD than that one song. There are no fillers here - every song on it is good. This is one of those few CDs that you can leave on and play all the way through without getting bored.

Night Ranger won me over from the start with the albumn Dawn Patrol. Their balads are catchy, their up-tempo rockers are solid. Versatility is a sign of good musicianship. Tight vocals and great guitar work made them a frontrunner band in the 80's, with a little help from MTV.

This is one of the three best Night Ranger CD's, and definately one to have in your collection.

Oh the eighties,and how we were lucky to have been a teenager.This album thanks to MTV pushed these talented muscians to the top.Classic fast paced album which seems to end quickly but never a dull track.You Can Still Rock In America,the lead track right through is non stop.These albums are hard to find in stores.Thank god for amazon!Jack Blades,Kelly Keagy and Brad Gillis gave it all.I was fortunate to have seen them perform live and WOW! I don't think there's a Night Ranger album that has ever disappointed me, and this one is no exception. Solid from start to finish, its brimming with huge hooks and fantastic fret work. Night Ranger's albums are always so solid, its difficult to say that one is much better than the other, or one is a "return to form" or whatever a critic might assign in trying to gauge a record vs. previous albums. In any event, this record is a bit more aggressive and harder-edged than their last two studio records. Regardless, you won't be disappointed.

As others have mentioned, what a year for comebacks by '80s bands! This one by Night Ranger seems to be getting overlooked by too many. It is absolutely brilliant! For some bands, it is fine for them to keep recreating their original sound, but Night Ranger has never been satisfied simply doing that. Listen to the searing opening rockers "Tell Your Vision", "Drama Queen", and "Your Gonna Hear it From Me". While modern, it is definitely Night Ranger with the dualing guitars and catchy melodies. Has Night Ranger ever rocked harder than they do here? "There Is Life", at track 5, is indeed the power ballad of the album. Some call it "Sister Christian" for the 21st century, and I see their point. However, this song stands on its own as a fantastic melodic ballad. "White Knuckle Ride" is another modern rocker that takes some getting used to but again becomes brilliant to me after repeated listens. "Revelation 4AM" to me sounds like vintage Night Ranger. "Being" is a nice, slow way to end the new tracks on an album of material that generally ROCKS through and through. The bonus acoustic studio tracks of classics "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" and "Sister Christian" don't take away from the rest of the material but in fact enhance it. Don't be fooled by these tracks being acoustic--they are still catchy and rocking, enjoyable versions of the songs.

I am well aware that Night Ranger had all its top 40 hits between 1982 and 1986--the last being "Goodbye" some 22 years ago. However, for true fans of this band that care about more than radio hits, this album should absolutely hit the spot. Night Ranger is a band that saw its highest level of fame in the '80s, but this album proves that they are in no way stuck in the '80s. If you like any music at all beyond 1990, give this one a listen. I am anything but disappointed in this new material--to me it is one of the best rock albums of the year to date.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw this CD, I worried it was gonna be a bunch of guys past their prime, still trying to make the old stuff new. I decided to give it a listen. Sampled it and decided it was worth it to buy it. WOW! They have come BACK! And it's fresh, but it's still them...just BETTER!! The trademark guitar licks from Brad, the strong vocals and drums of Kelly, every song is great! Especially enjoy: "You're Gonna Hear From Me", and "There is Life". Take a listen to this CD for sure. If you don't like it, CHECK YOUR PULSE!!

It just rocks hard all the way through.
This just reminds me of the band as they were when they first started out, all of these songs could be hits for them today!
Buy it and you wont be disappointed!

Hole In The Sun it's good cd but there's nothing here that make you scream for a miracle. Highlights are Tell Your Vision, You're Gonna Hear From Me, There is Life, Whatever Happen and the acoustic version of the hits Don't tell Me You Love Me and Sister Christian. But the the other tracks are just ok fillers. Not as good as their 97 Neverland and more or less in the same level of Seven. It deserves 3 stars.

I first heard this album when I was 10 years old, and I'm still enjoying it today, 24 years later. I only wish music today was this good.

This is the album that started off Night Ranger's very long and rocky career, I love all of their CD's but this first one will always hold a special place in my heart.
IT ROCKS!!!

I dusted this effort off recently while transferring a wealth of vinyl to digital. Musically the album, like you would expect from such a talented band, is very good. With a couple guitarslingers like Jeff Watson and the underrated Brad Gillis you expect a lot. The songs are hit and miss though. At times the band shows uncanny pop sensibility with songs such as "Don't Tell You Love Me" and "Young Girl in Love" and at other times can't seem to find a good melody such as "Play Rough" "Eddie's comin' out Tonight". Knowing the two heavyweights playing guitar makes one expect more from the band, but alas, they could never deliver a solid front to back album. I find it interesting to look back at videos from this era a see that "Fitz" Gerald and the keyboardist from Prince's "1999" era band band both mined the surgeon-in-scrubs look. LOL. The album is worth picking up though, just to get the epic "Don't Tell Me..." a rocker for the ages. This alone gets it an extra star.

I'll never forget the first time I heard Night Ranger's "Dawn Patrol." A couple of friends played "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" for me, and I was in air guitar heaven. That track blazes!! One of my friends said that it was incredible that two guitarists as good as Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson made it into the same band. How true. The best thing about this album is how it flows, maintaining a rocking yet melodic form throughout. I saw Night Ranger live in 1984 and again in 1999; they showcased their awesome talent as musicians on both occasions. They sounded great live. My favorite thing about this album is the unique guitar style of Brad Gillis. As soon as you hear his expressive solos, you know it is him, wailing away on his red guitar. I think this album shows the group at its rockin' best, before the pressure to conform to radio based hits took its toll. Check out "Can't Find Me a Thrill," "Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight," and "Night Ranger(the song)" for a chance to kick out the jams. Catch you on the Dawn Patrol, my rockin' brothers & sisters.

No matter if you love Night Ranger or not this as got to be one of their best cd yet? It has my favorite song on the cd Big Life and the theme song from Michael J. Fox's hit movie the secret of my success. This group really knows how to rock.

Critics of hair metal albums will never get it. I surrender, I'm tired of trying to explain them what this music means for us that lived the eighties as "twenties" (being guitar players by the way!). I'm even tired of trying to explain them that melody is the most important thing in music and that you don't have to judge a tune for the gear the band used at the time or for their look. They will never understand the irresistible mixture of chops and melody that hair metal music was about. So I quit. Unlucky for them they are probably too young to understand: if it is so they probably lived their youth in the absolute overall worst period for music (grunge ARGHHHHHHHHHHH) so I'm sorry for them. Or probably they are too old so they grew up in the pre-Van Halen period, so to me are dinosaurs. But in one ways or another they were not in their twenties in those days and didn't live the energy, the excitment of the eighties and of the good music that was produced at the time. I do, so I can't do nothing but absolutly love this album which to me stands out as one of the best of those days. I remember that I used to pick my friends up with my car for our "guitar safaris" with this music cranked out loud ... we traveled, we did buy guitars, we had fun, we learn, we laughed, we loved with this music. It's in my heart. I love this album from its beginning to its end and even if many guys who either love this album pointed out "The secret of my success" as the worst tune here, I don't know, I don't agree, I still like it very much! It seems to me that it perfectly fits the mood of the album instead. But the tune that I love the most is absolutly "Love is standing near" which is a stellar example of hair metal (rock with strong melodic hooks plus guitar chops,... try to beat it guys, try it). But in the end say whatever you want people, I'm absolutly happy to be a "poser guitar player from the eighties" just like Jeff and Brad here =))) and to have my memories coloured by this music, which is extremely warm, melodic, in two words just beautiful music! Totally mindblowing! Sorry if you're not one of us.

I would have given the CD a 5 star rating except for "Secret of my Success." The rest of the album is well done and I never get tired of listening to it.

This was actually a pretty good release. The intro to "Big Life" is a killer. The "Color Of Your Smile" reminds me of ELO's "Turn To Stone". Great guitar work from the dynamic duo, as usual.

It amazes me how much this album is maligned. By the time this came out, Night Ranger no longer was a pop music "flavor of the week". The empty-headed masses who probably claimed to be the biggest Night Ranger fans on the planet when "Sister Christian" was out found it easy to jump all over this album when it did not yield the top 40 hits of its predecesors. I will also acknowledge that it is not quite as good as their three previous albums and that the band themselves never play anything off this album live. Nonetheless, listen to this album for yourself if you are or were a Night Ranger fan beyond radio hits. If you do, I almost guarantee you will like this album.

Some people remember only "The Secret Of My Success" from this album due to the movie it came from. While I agree that it is not the best NR track ever, it is still a solid, catchy rocker. Better on this album are track like the opening rocking title track, the melodic, anthemic "Color Of Your Smile", and the classic (to me, anyway) "Rain Comes Crashing Down", which reminds me a lot of the awesome "Call My Name" from NR's debut "Dawn Patrol" album. Other rock highlights include "Better Let It Go" and the melodies within "I Know Tonight". Back at track 3, "Love Is Standing Near" is a great mid-tempo anthem, while the closing ballad "Hearts Away" (the only real ballad on the album) is also stellar.

This is still vintage Night Ranger here; trust me. If you are a fan of the band in particular and melodic rock in general, you owe it to yourself to try to find this album. Definitely a great listen--as most Night Ranger albums are.

At first, the only two songs on the album I listened to were "Sentimental Street" and 'I Will Follow You". I slowly worked my way to the other songs on the album starting in December with "Goodbye", and then "Four in the Morning" in March, then after that, "Interstate Love Affair", "Night Machine", the title track in 2003, and then I listened to the songs I hadn't heard yet in 2004. This is one of my all time favorite albums. "Sentimental Street" is Night Ranger's best song ever (much better than the overplayed Sister Christian). "7 Wishes" is right up there with anything by Journey, Styx, Boston, REO Speedwagon, and any other arena rock legends. Pick this one up!

Jack Blades did the difficult task of coordinating such talents into organized expert work. The band started career just when two key trends upset the music world. To become huge in corporate rock world the band must have either of two elements. Girly high-toned vocal just as Steve Perry, and Mickey Thomas to accommodate with synth-heavy music. Perfect command of keyboard-heavy pomp rock arrangement just as Boston did. Alan Fitzgerald with masterful command of keyboard made one element cleared. But the band does not have the second element high-toned vocal. Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy co-vocaled and supplemented the lack each other. There is another deadlock the band must pass. To become commercially huge they must have ballad hits. Survivor did make rock hit EYE OF THE TIGER but as Jim Peterik himself admits this was just the exception rather than rule. Previous album with top 5 ballad hit SISTER CHRISTIAN and the band cleared the last obstacle. So the third album with some ballad hits is the natural outcome. Why can't they rival with Journey, Toto, Survivor and Def Leppard and pursue what they were trying to achieve?

However, rock fans who lauded them as some kind of metal rock saviors began to complain about too many ballads particularly GOODBYE. Japanese metal fans who think of JUDAS PRIEST as their rock god and keen readers of BURRN magazine in particular wrote them off as gone badly as AIR-SUPPLY sort of junks.

ERRATIC SONG ARRANGEMENT
Album song arrangement made the ire of the fans worse I think.
Why Goodbye is the last song of the album? It's not a good choice. Yeah some metal bands do this but with much caution. To set the last song ballad like the ballad must be bombastic. Good example is recent Pride of Lions GIFT OF SONG and Fair Warning's Four ending song FOR THE YOUNG or their rival Survivor's I SEE YOU EVERYONE in Vital Signs. NIGHT MACHINE is supposed to be the last. They should have adopted the "LUMP CATCHY SONGS" rule and made "goodbye" locate the first half of the album. Just as Survivor's Vital Signs did why not fourth track rather than last?

ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS

FACES: Dramatic intro warmly vocals, excellently structured.
THIS BOY NEEDS TO ROCK: Fun uptempo rock track answering Bryan Adams's KIDS WANNA ROCK?
I WILL FOLLOW YOU: My top favorite emotional power ballad.
INTERSTATE LOVE AFFAIR: Upbeat rocker essential for concerts.
NIGHT MACHINE: Yeah. That's what Night Ranger is all about.
GOODBYE: Nice power ballad but not the song for the last track.

Since this album's severe feedback the band trying to reorganize just in vain. They made great last album of the 80s MAN IN MOTION but after that the band called it quit and until 97 reunion fans felt sorry for the loss of one of the greatest rock bands on earth.

Verdict: Excellent album. Forget power ballad hits. Rockers are super.
Rating: 94 out of 100. Minus three points for "Goodbye" issue.
Recommended for mid 80s pop fans who like Survivor, Foreigner, Toto, and Def Leppard.

Is is the first Night Ranger C.D I have brought for 17 Years since Big Life. Not a bad album the best track on their is seven wishes. The album is far better than Big Life a with a lot rock .

I had this on cassette when I was a teenager. I "dragged main street" to it many a night. A great old time favorite. If you like/liked Night Ranger, this is a great album.

I got this CD to fill out my collection. After listening to it after a 15-20 year gap, I was not impressed with it. Only one or two really good tunes..the rest are Night Ranger-like, however, don't have a catchy tune or inspired riffs.

What an awesome release from Night Ranger. There is truly not a bad song on the disc. The production quality is top notch as well. Too bad this one isn't more accessible. If you can find this, get it. Takes you back to the day! Probably one of their best!

Night Ranger is best known for it's song, Sister Christian, but I was surprised by the other songs on this compact disc including "The Secret of My Success" which was used for the film starring Michael J. Fox. They were one of the hair bands of the 1980s. In this collection, they still rock as ever and bring back nostalgia about that time period. It's a great buy for the price and the songs remind me of simpler times. If you love music from that era, you will like and appreciate Night Ranger's contributions to music and videos. Who could ever forget Sister Christian's music video? The song entitled Secret of My Success could be their anthem.

It sure seems like people have an axe to grind with these 20th Century Masters "Best Of" collections. The common complaints are usually with the song selection and the album length. No matter what songs appear on a "best of" or "greatest hits" package, there's always going to be a track that gets left off that you think is one of the band's better tracks. As to the album length - while it's true they left room for another 30 minutes worth of material, this compilation is not supposed to be some all encompassing anthology. The 20th Century Masters series serves as an introduction to the artist and their most noteworthy material. Typically that means 10-12 tracks, which obviously won't fill the entire disc.

I think the record company nailed it perfectly with the Night Ranger 20th Century Masters album. They picked the best 2-3 songs off of each of the band's early albums, cleaned up the sound considerably, and presented them in a very affordable package. You get all of the band's radio hits, including the extremely huge power ballad "Sister Christian", digitally remastered, all for about half the cost of the average CD.

The Best of Night Ranger: the 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection is an ideal introduction to the AOR powerhouse that is Night Ranger. It provides a great overview of the band's style, as well as giving existing Night Ranger fans a chance to hear this classic material with greatly improved sound.

NOTE: This compilation is also available in eco-friendly packaging (recycled paper sleeves and trays, liner notes posted online rather than including a CD booklet), for those who prefer a "greener" approach to CD buying.

This CD and the one entitled" Night Ranger's Greatest Hits are almost identical, but are different in this way:

"Best" contains "I Did It For Love". "Greatest" contains, instead, "Rumours In The Air" and "Restless Kind". The other 10 tracks on each CD are the same. So, which one to buy? My choice is the one with the extra track. Also, in my opinion, both tracks on "Greatest" are better than the one on "Best".

In addition, here's hoping that the band or record label decides to release a true "Greatest Hits" or "Best Of" album that will contain about 15 or 16 songs. Or maybe a multi-disc compilation that will include some rare tracks.

Night Ranger fans would surely delight to see something like that.

Night Ranger was one of those bands from the '80s who should have been a LOT bigger than they were. Most fans were introduced to the group with the tune Don't Tell Me You Love Me. Of course the band become popular with the song Sister Christian. The problem with Sister was if that was the only tune most fans knew they probably thought Night Ranger was a "pop" band which was not the case. This band could rock with the best of them. Night Ranger was one of those few '80s bands who could please the hard rock fans as well as the pop fans. They are still touring today and if you get the chance check them out. But before you do pick this up so you can rock with the band all night. You can still rock in America indeed!!!

One of my favorite songs from the original "Greatest Hits" is "Rumours In The Air" because unlike most of their other songs, it has a distinctive, creative, in-depth sound. It was more than just a pretty face.

I bought the 20th Century Masters compilation because its sound quality is remastered and superior to the original compilation. But after buying it, I realized that "Rumours" was mysteriously left off. This is inexcusable considering both the unused space left on the disc, and the inclusion of the cookie cutter 80's song "I Did It For Love." To remove a song that is highly creative and unique to include a song that is highly typical and draped in 80's bland taints this collection.

One day the recording industry will start offering true "greatest" hits packages so people won't have to download the songs needed to fill in the gaps left on the CD's they buy!

Good example is recent Pride of Lions GIFT OF SONG and Fair Warning's Four ending song FOR THE YOUNG or their rival Survivor's I SEE YOU EVERYONE in Vital Signs. NIGHT MACHINE is supposed to be the last. They should have adopted the "LUMP CATCHY SONGS" rule and made "goodbye" locate the first half of the album. Just as Survivor's Vital Signs did why not fourth track rather than last?

FACES: Dramatic intro warmly vocals, excellently structured.
THIS BOY NEEDS TO ROCK: Fun uptempo rock track answering Bryan Adams's KIDS WANNA ROCK?
I WILL FOLLOW YOU: My top favorite emotional power ballad.
INTERSTATE LOVE AFFAIR: Upbeat rocker essential for concerts.
NIGHT MACHINE: Yeah. That's what Night Ranger is all about.
GOODBYE: Nice power ballad but not the song for the last track.

Since this album's severe feedback the band trying to reorganize just in vain. They made great last album of the 80s MAN IN MOTION but after that the band called it quit and until 97 reunion fans felt sorry for the loss of one of the greatest rock bands on earth.

Verdict: Excellent album. Forget power ballad hits. Rockers are super.
Rating: 94 out of 100. Minus three points for "Goodbye" issue.
Recommended for mid 80s pop fans who like Survivor, Foreigner, Toto, and Def Leppard.

Is is the first Night Ranger C.D I have brought for 17 Years since Big Life. Not a bad album the best track on their is seven wishes. The album is far better than Big Life a with a lot rock .

I had this on cassette when I was a teenager. I "dragged main street" to it many a night. A great old time favorite. If you like/liked Night Ranger, this is a great album.

This is "Night Ranger" caught live in Tokyo, Japan during the Asian summer tour of 2007. To avoid any confusion or skepticism it must be pointed out that this is an official band release issued by "Frontiers Records" with excellent audio and layout quality.
As Expected the show captured in this release was in support of their latest studio album "Hole in the Sun" and thus set to include certain new songs.
Now this album is an extremely interesting live offering as it portrays a new twin guitar combination. Sure Brad Gillis (ex "Ozzy Osbourne") is an extremely competent guitar player but how does he fair against fearless guitar mercenary Reb Beach ("Winger", ex"Dokken", "Whitesnake")?
Well this is not a power struggle. Gillis plays most of the lead guitar parts while Beach lays rhythm parts, second guitar melodies and a number of solos which usually close the songs. The styles of Reb and Brad are incredibly similar (Reb admits that his extraordinary whammy bar technique was based on Gillis's pattern); and this makes all the difference when the twin guitar melodies and harmonic fills kick in. Reb follows every song to the note without alienating parts or rearranging solos etc; so you can rest assured that the original "Night Ranger" sound is preserved.

One has to admit that there are certain things that could have been arranged differently. Keagey's drums could have been more up front in the mix making this a more aggressive record while Gillis's guitar coming from the left speaker is not as loud as Reb's.

Overall a very good live album that delivers the authentic "Night Ranger" sound backed by probably the best line up (technique wise) the band has ever demonstrated.
