Pat Benatar

I think that Pat Benatar has a good voice, last month I saw her in concert and I thought that she was really good. Her voice sounds the same as it did back in the eighties, which I thought was very cool. I like alot of different classic rock.

THE DISC: (2005) 20 tracks clocking in at approximately 79 minutes. Included with the disc is a 10-page booklet containing black & white photos of Benatar, song titles/credits (no song lyrics), Billboard chart success of each single, a brief statement from several female artists inspired by Benatar (including Joan Jett, Martina McBride, Sarah McLachlan, Martha Davis, Tori Amos, etc), what songs came from which albums and year released. This compilation follows Benatar from 1979-1988. Remastered sound. Label - Capital Records.

COMMENTS: 4 Grammy's, 6 platinum albums, 4 gold albums, 19 Top 40 hits... if you're a rock fan, you need some Pat Benatar in your collection. Over a dozen studio albums and almost as many hit compilations from Benatar... what hits package do you ultimately reach for? Looking for an in-depth purchase, go with the 3-disc set "Synchronistic Wanderings" (1999) containing 53 songs (all the hits, several live tracks, B-sides, and alternative takes) - truly a grand collection of master female rocker Pat Benatar. However, if you're looking for that one disc, that gives you just the popular hits... this "Greatest Hits" is the one. THE GOOD: All the staples are here - "Heartbreaker", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Hell Is For Children", "Treat Me Right", "You Better Run", "Fire And Ice", "Shadows Of The Night", "Precious Time", "Love Is A Battlefield", "We Belong", "Invincible", "All Fired Up", etc. The songs are presented in chronological order - always a bonus in my opinion - hearing the artist mature and change direction(s) over the years. The digital remastering is superb - crisp highs and deep bass tones. There are so many issues these days with `remastering'... where it seems whoever is behind the control board just pushes all the levels up to 11 and doesn't take anything else into consideration. On Benatar's "Greatest Hits" though, the songs sound perfect. The disc itself is packed full of music - just over 79 minutes worth. The liner notes are extensive - giving you pictures, inspirational notes from other female musicians, and specifics on the individual songs. THE NOT SO GOOD: Two (extremely) minor things... otherwise this disc is as close to perfection as it gets. In general, a vast majority of the compilations miss the boat. For the single disc though, the song selection is dead on accurate - there's not one song that isn't deserving to be here. 1st - personally, for many years I've been tired of the song "We Live For Love". I feel this song is dated and overplayed (at the time). With that being said though, "We Live For Love" deserves to be here - it was Benatar's 2nd Top 40 hit (behind only "Heartbreaker"). 2nd - I could nit-pick some more and say this disc is not all inclusive. You'll find nothing from "True Love" (1991), "Gravity's Rainbow", "Innamorata" (1997) or "Go" (2003). However, there's no room for another song on this disc. Most of the single disc mixes concentrate on Benatar in her prime (as does this one)... here's hoping an updated 2-disc version is released with some of her more recent material, cover tunes ("I Need A Lover" for one), live performances, etc. all together. OVERALL: Beginners and long time fans - start your collection here. If you're looking for one disc of Pat Benatar in her prime - her best hits in all their remastered glory - this is it (5 stars).

I bought this CD because I love always loved Pat Benatar's music. I don't think she's ever done a song I didn't like. The only time I get to listen to this CD is when I'm working out on my ellipse machine. It keeps me motivated to continue until the end. It is currently my #1 choice.

I've been wanting her Greatest Hits collection for some time. She is one of my favorites. I was not disappointed. I even discovered a couple of songs in the collection that I didn't remember that I also really like. Usually one buys an album and wastes money on songe they don't like, but not with THIS collection!!!

If you're reading this review, then you're probably looking for an introduction to the music of Pat Benatar - maybe you've heard "Heartbreaker" on the radio or maybe you've played "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" on Guitar Hero. This CD does contain those tracks and many other great songs by Pat, but if you're looking for a broader introduction to her work I recommend you check out "Synchronistic Wanderings", a much more inclusive 3-CD set which you can get used from Amazon if you're willing to spend just a few more dollars. Many stunning tracks (Run Between the Raindrops, Outlaw Blues, Somebody's Baby, Every Time I Fall Back, etc) have been left off this CD, but are featured in "Synchronistic Wanderings".

One (minor) problem with this album is that a few of the songs have been shortened in length by a few seconds. That's understandable, as this CD approaches 80 minutes, but it's slightly annoying for musical purists like myself.

That being said, this collection is one of the better "Greatest Hits" albums out there.

Unfortunately this new collection is a prime offender. It is compressed and brickwall limited within an inch of it's life. Hey record companies, we have our own volume knobs, please stop doing this. It robs the recordings of all dynamics and is very fatiguing to listen to over the course of the album. Also, when musicians in a band do a "build up" where say, the guitars and drums get louder, it'd be nice and accurate on the CD if the volume would actually change and get, loder. Here during the numerous buildups in songs, "I need a Lover" is a prime example, the volume level stays the EXACT same throughout. Tha's not how the band played it, how they recorded it or how it used to sound on the original records. TOO much compression. A shame.

I've been a serious PB fan ever since I first heard "Sex As A Weapon" on the radio here in the UK - I was hooked!!!! Couldn't make up my mind whether to buy the 7" or 12" and ended up buying both as well as Seven The Hard Way album!!!!!

Yes, yet another compilation from Pat (who is on my MYSPACE friends!!!!) but what would have been great for me would have been the inclusion of a few original extended mixes. The extended mix of "Sex...." is AWESOME and so is the dub remix (both found on the 12" single). The video version of "Love Is A Battlefield is also superb. Come ON Capitol.........please please please PLEASE can we have these original extended mixes on an official CD release!!!

Simply said, Pat Benatar has the greatest female voice in rock. The only downfall of this CD is it is yet again another greatest hits. Her new paired down version of Everytime I Fall Back however, makes this CD a must have for all Benatar fans.

There has been a lot of compilations for Pat Benatar and I know her music is the best thing ever but once "Synchronistic Wanderings" appeared in the market it was known which compilation CD was the best one. It seemed like all of these other cd's only went up on her hits until 1993 and we know that there was hits after that. I also noticed that no one knows how to spell on this cd either such as "Painted Desert" appears as "Painted Dessert" I was laughing and I am just imagining Pat singing about "Painted Dessert"lol!! anyways...this cd is good in a pinch other than that "Synchronistic Wanderings" is the best one so far!

You simply can't go wrong with this 2 disc set of many of Pat's best and biggest songs. It features something from every album during the Chrysalis years, which established her as Billboard Magazines #1 Female Rock Performer of all-time. It shows the wide range she has, from her more mainstream songs like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Fire and Ice" to her new wave side with "Lipstick Lies", "Love is a Battlefield", "We Belong", and "Sex As a Weapon." It also showcases her blues with "True Love".

I do wish that the CD had included a couple of more recent songs such as "Strawberry Wine" or "River of Love" from her "Inamorata" CD. Or the song "Go" from the CD of the same title. That last song is Benatar at her best and it harkens back to her earlier work. You should hunt it down and give it a listen.

Pat B. is the COOLEST of the Cool. Can't get enough of her music! Good old rock and roll at its BEST.

When I was a kid and went to our local Prange Way to buy this album in 1980 they were sold out and all I could buy was the 8track! So for years I heard it in all that interesting click and clacks that came on during the track changes. Of course as the years passed, I have bought every version made available and thankfully in the last few months Chrysalis Records got wise and remastered Pat's first three albums.

It is Crimes Of Passion, Pat's second album that drove her into the rock stratosphere and made me the ultra Benatar lover I am. Driving singles "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," "You Better Run" & "Treat Me Right" showed she could rock and sing the talk. But listening to all the elements of the remasters I realize why I loved this album in the first place. Album cuts like "Hell Is For Children", "Little Paradise" and "Out-A-Touch" rock, plus her cover of Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" is something to hear in order to believe.

Neil Geraldo's great guitar solos and Pat's defiance, all came through on this 1980 release. Plus it has another of my all time fav songs ever, "I'm Gonna Follow You" all about being stalked by someone who finds themselves in "My alley". This is a must have for anyone even remotely curious in Benatar.

In recent years, I've been digging deeper into some artists that I enjoyed but never owned any albums from at the time.I was familiar with "Treat Me Right", "Hell Is For Children" and of course "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"--which gets relentless airplay even to this day, that and "Heart Breaker" from her debut.
I decided to get this based on the overall 5-star rating here on Am, and what an amazing album! Every single track is as good as any of the three I knew. I've been playing it over and over again, and the whole thing, every single track, just keeps jumping out with catchy tunes and freshness like it was put together and released yesterday, not in 1980--1980! If you said that's the greatness of classic rock and why they call it that, I'd certainly agree. But this has a really stunning timelessness, and the music is just so good. If you're like me, you may well find a new Patty favorite. I love EVERY track on this wonderful disk, but I find that "Wuthering Heights" really showcases not only the power--which the usual radio-selected tunes do--but also the beauty of Patty's voice. Overall, you will get a real sense of the richness and versatility of Patty's voice from this. And then you will start thinking what next to get out of her catalogue.
It rocks at moderate hard throughout, lightening up just a bit in places with some great results. Anyway, buy this. It certainly canNOT be passed up at the $7.97 Am. is asking for it. Throw in another disk or two you've been wanting and you even get free shipping.
Anyway, if you've heard and enjoyed any Patty at all, you will love this and be very happy to own it.

I remember owning this on cassette back in the 80s. You can get the main hits off of her G/H or other compilation CDs, but you'll miss out on the great B-sides that are very enjoyable. Some prime examples are: Out-A-Touch, Prisoner Of Love, You Better Run, Little Paradise. Not one bad song on here. Of course, Hit Me With Your Best Shot is probably her greatest hit, but to truly appreciate her work you should give this a listen from start to finish. A must for any true fan.

I picked this holiday collection up a few years ago & it quickly became a MUST-PLAY Christmas cd. Some of the tunes are true rock & roll yuletide classics-such as Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer by The Smithereens, Rock & Roll Christmas by George Thorogood, along with Christmas Is The Time(To Say I Love You)by Billy Squier. However, I was thrilled upon first hearing Lovin' Little Christmas by Danny Tate! This song immediately caught my attention & I found myself playing it at least another 3 times before letting the cd play to the end. I wish Danny Tate had recorded an entire album of Christmas songs, also that Lovin' Little Christmas would receive some air-play around holiday time! This guy is a major find & while I did see 2 albums for Danny Tate here on Amazon, I can't help wondering why he's not up there with other major rock acts. Anyway, while I'm not too crazy about The ... Surfers or The Red-Hot Chili Peppers, it is a fun album all in all and you can't go wrong by sending for this collection & listening to it for years to come. Very highly recommended.

On True Love Pat Benatar stretched her limits to include her love of the blues. It is a great album full of great blues tunes. It fell short of being a hit but is still a good listen. Rock music was born out of the blues and you can hear it in this pure blues collection.

I became aware of this album by way of the "True Love" video. Tracking it down on Amazon (where else of course) proved to be a great move. It's a fast paced smokin' jump blues album that BELONGS in you Benatar collection. This little lady heats up songs like Bloodshot Eyes, Payin' the Cost to be the Boss, I Feel Lucky, Good Life as well as providing sultry vocals to the afore-mentioned True Love and So Long. This lady can sing! And the backing musicians are all spot on top notch people. Do yourself a favor, if your a Pat Benatar fan or a blues lover (I'm both),and definately give this album the listen it deserves. And,just maybe, if we get lucky, she'll do another one someday.

pat benetar's voice lends itself quite well to the blues. tight band playing behind her. the only thing that kept it from being a 5 star is including "come home for christmas" on the cd. don't get me wrong, it is a great song, but cut a christmas cd and put it on there.

Something totally different for Pat Benatar...but she is so versatile and has the most amazing voice any way she decides to sing. This collection of songs, the blues, the horns, the style, just love it!

Pat Benatar broke through her Hard Rock style with this album. Every song spills over in her skill and amazing vocal ability. She is truly a force to be reckoned with. If you have any sense of jazz/blues in your bones, try this album for something different. Her amazing ability to emote passion and love within a song comes through with such ease.

I'm typing this as I listen to the gloriousness that is Pat Benatar's debut album. From the thumpity thump drum beat in the opening number "Heartbreaker" to the ending guitar squeeze of "So Sincere", Pat has it going on in every single note of these 10 excellant songs. It was 1979 and the city was steamy and so was Patty Patty - just look at that cover; and the cover actually summed up the music you hear. The city groove of the title cut with its sultry lyrics and Pat's high octave kicking in, it's one of those overlooked tracks of such a great career; the new wave crashes in on here as well most notably on the single "We Live For Love" and the Nick Gilder cover "Rated X", but rock is there for our girl including her version of Mellencamp's "I Need A Lover" which is so much better here than his version, I don't care if he did write it. The fact a woman is not only singing lines like "I need a lover who knows the meaning of hey hit the highway/ someone who'll thrill me then just go away" but that she actually hisses the vocal. This is a woman you don't want to mess with but such a heat wave of sensuality, you would want to try it. There's cabaret lounge thrown in on "My Clone Sleeps Alone" which in turn belts into a rocking little ditty by the end of those 3 and a half minutes. The uber rock ballad "Don't Let It Show" breaks into the uber rock domination of "No You Don't" with barely a breath. Just listen to some of these songs and Pat's delivery on them - one second of hoarse foulness and one second later a high note of epic proportions all over a cover of new wave nuances and rocking guitars. In The Heat Of The Night is one of my all time favorite albums of all times and everyone should hear it. Now the whole album is recently reissued by Chrysalis in glorious sounding form - though the artwork sucks (is it so hard to give the woman a little extra like at least a picture on the jewel case!) so you owe it yourself and also for all those girls with their fists in the air who won't be taken advantage of, to get yourself a copy of this CD. Perhaps there should be a new motto "What would Benatar do?" Can you see it? Numerous stickers with WWBD? I think I'm calling someone about that.

Pat's crystal clear voice is striking and her range is fantastic on her first offering. Hearing it on CD even more amazing. Guitar solos are great without being overly done. "I Need A Lover" is a little commercial-sounding compared to the rest of the material. Some of the compositions that are minimal on instruments showcase her talent (the title track). If you've never heard Benatar before, give it a listen. It might make you an instant fan and wanting more.

Wow! What an upgrade! I could go into many details as to why this is an excellent album in terms of arrangement, production, and lyrics. However, my 5-star review is based on the sound quality alone. It is simply stunning! It's amazing to hear so much crisp, clean sound tweaked out of 1979 recording. Like the other 2006 Benatar remasters -- 'Precious Time' (1981) and 'Crimes Of Passion' (1980)-- mastering engineer Mark Chalecki has restored 1979's 'In The Heat Of The Night' to new heights, sonically. Now we finally get a hint as to what the album sounded like when originally recorded! Previous masters have really left the album flat and empty, sonically. Now is the chance to hear it like it was meant to be heard. Rock at it's best!

Check out "My Clone Sleeps Alone" with it's soft piano intro. Then, suddenly, boom! Those roaring drums and electric guitars come flying at you! This is my favorite track to listen to when experiencing the remastering upgrade. The stereo field has been greatly expanded here, bringing depth and width to the audio. IT SOUNDS AMAZING!!! Or what about "Heartbreaker" and "I Need A Lover"? I could ramble on and on about the sound on every track. I can't believe how good this album sounds! Mark has really made these tracks shine like never before!

I highly recommend this release in addition to the other 2006 remasters if you wish to hear Pat like you've never heard her before. Now, Capitol, can we get the next batch of remasters rolling along?

On IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, Pat Benatar premieres her unique blend of Ian Hunter-style glam, Steve Miller-esque pop-rock, Cars-type new wave, and Ted Nugent-influenced heavy metal, with outstanding results, creating a sound that was revolutionary for a woman at the time. All of the songs are great, with particular standouts being the new-wavish "We Live For Love" and the hard-rock overdrive of "Heartbreaker." The next two albums would be just as good, but here, she starts at the top of her game, making it clear that this was a woman who was not going to let men push her around, a trait admirable even today.

Crimson and Clover was Joan Jett. However, this album is in fact missing Treat Me Right and You Better Run.

Still, a very good showing for one of the best voices in rock.

this is a good CD. but it is missing something(s) treat me right and crimson and clover. Pat did a good job on both of these songs.

The only positive to this CD is that it includes the album tracks. "All Fired Up! The Best of Pat Benatar" and the remastered "Greatest Hits" both use the single versions of a handful of songs. This 15-song selection ommits a few good tracks, inlcuding "Treat Me Right", "Little Too Late", and "You Better Run". The sound quality is also below par.

In my opinion, Pat Benatar is the reigning first lady of hard rock (with Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart in second), and when you have had a career as prolific as hers, casual fans are left with a barrage of skimpy greatest hits and best of collections to choose from. In 1989, the 15 track "Best Shots" was released. 15 years later (and even after the release of the 10x superior "Greatest Hits"), this collection is still on the market. Should you buy "Best Shots"? Here are the positives and the negatives.

Positives:
-Whether you get this or "Greatest Hits", you are getting some of the greatest hard rock ever recorded, including rock radio classics like "Heartbreaker", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Hell Is For Children", "Love Is A Battlefield" and "We Belong".
-It includes an unreleased live version of "Hell Is For Children", done as a medley with "Suffer The Little Children" (a trakc originally found on 1988's "Wide Awake In Dreamland").
-This collection does include the unedited version of "Love Is A Battlefield". This is the only collection I know of that includes it.

Negatives:
-This collection leaves out a ton of essential and well known Benatar classics, including "You Better Run", "Treat Me Right", "Precious Time", "Anxiety (Get Nervous)", "Little Too Late", "Looking For A Stranger", "Ooh Ooh Song", "Sex As A Weapon" and "La Bel Age (The Best Years)". The omissions of "Treat Me Right" and "Little Too Late" are especially puzzling, considering both were top 20 hits.
-The sound isn't all that great.
-We really did not need the live version of "Hell Is For Children".
-"Painted Desert" and "Outlaw Blues" are good songs, but aren't among her best shots.
-Worst of all, this cd doesn't even come close to filling the eight minute time limit a cd will allow. This cd only has a run time of 66 minutes and 34 seconds. That's almost 15 minutes worth of space. Plus, if you got rid of the the live track and "Painted Desert" and "Outlaw Blues" and replaced them with the tracks I mentioned, you'd have the definiitve Pat Benatar collection.

My advice is to skip this skimpy collection (the only reason I rated it three stars, is because I find it hard to rate anything by Benatar as a whole less than five stars). You should go out and pick up the recently released "Greatest Hits", which is superbly remastered and includes all 17 of her chart singles as well as three great album tracks. "Best Shots" just isn't needed anymore.

For some reason it took me 7 YEARS to re-listen to the Pat Benatar albums my dad's girlfriend let me borrow (or maybe she wanted me to have them?)

Anyway, back in 2000 I was mostly concerned with hit songs from popular artists, and didn't have much patience to try and get into music I wasn't familiar with. In other words, I was about as close-minded as they come.

It's now June 21, 2007. It's summertime! I gave Precious Time another shot. I LOVE THIS ALBUM. I always knew Pat Benatar had the perfect female voice for rock and roll, and this album totally proves how good she used to be.

Her voice is so good and convincing, it's like she was born to sing rock songs. Her excellent voice isn't the only thing that makes the album great- it's also the highly enjoyable songwriting. Every song is written so perfectly, and you can remember how every song goes because the vocal melodies are quite tasty and original.

Great music. Not just the hit songs like "Promises in the Dark" and "Fire and Ice" either. The super melodic and rocking title song, her cover of the Beatles "Helter Skelter" and the reggae beats found on "It's a Tuff Life". Lets not forget the other highly melodic tunes such as "Evil Genius" and "Hard to Believe". I love this album. Pat Benatar really was an excellent musician.

First let me mention how disappointed I am with the Chrysalis remasters of the first three Pat Benatar's albums. Luckily, I don't have issue with the music, which in essence is the most important thing; it's the skimpy artwork, no liner notes, no big celebrity nods to the power that is Pat - but what can you do? At least, as I just said, the music sounds outstanding. Precious Time was Pat's third album. Released in the summer of 1981 this album brings back so many memories; I had the first two albums and heard the first single from this album while at the municipal swimming pool in Mosinee, Wisconsin; "Fire & Ice" hit the radio and I hit the edge of the pool. The smooth bass line as the opening riff to that single still actually stands the test of time, the second single, the power house "Promises In The Dark" actually opens the album with a sneak attack; starting out with a piano and guitar combo Pat sounds like she's going to be coming out with a ballad but by the time the first chorus ends, the drums and electric chomps kick in and it goes all powerhouse from there; in the early days Pat did a few covers on every album and Precious Time is no different, but rather than a smooth reworking of any old 60s songs, she adds a grungy layer to Paul Revere's "Just Like Me" (though if you ever heard the live version she was doing back in 1979 the re-recording isn't as good) and of all things "Helter Skelter" which actually rocks pretty hard and closes out this short 9 song set - but in between "Promises" & "Helter" there's a lot to love - the super impact of the 6 minute title track ("Cut it out baby stop it/ life is too short so why waste precious tiiiime") a little ditty about self obsession and the seedy side of a glamour life, a theme reinstated on the reggae-ish "It's A Tuff Life" which has some of the most snarly vocals ever done by my Ms. B; the uber cool and chord changing "Hard To Believe" which has some of my fav lyrics and for a little over the topness, the strange yet compelling "Evil Genius" full of horns and crazy lyrics about an evil little boy who goes on a killing rampage. Apparantly, Pat was pushed into recording this album very quickly; her contract had her promise to make a new album every 9 months, and the reviews were awful, particularly one in Rolling Stone dubbed "spandex ballet" but the fans loved it, and though it was grittier than the straight ahead rock of Crimes Of Passion or the new wave nuance of In The Heat Of The Night, it still got spun on my record player for a long long time. Incidentally, the woman who wrote the terrible (and it was awful) review of Precious Time for RS back in '81 ended up writing a biography book on Pat Benatar - I guess when it came to the money, she too could be persuaded to love the spandex clad rock goddess.

This is Pat Benatar at her finest! From Promises in the Dark to her excellent cover of the Beatles Helter Skelter this album is great from beginning to end and perfect to take along on a road trip. It will keep you rocking from beginning to end. If you don't own anything else by her, this is the album to start your collection.

PRECIOUS TIME is Pat Benatar's third great CD in a row. "Promises In The Dark" is about betrayal and deceit, and the title song, could in the wake of the trumped-up 2005 Indonesian drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, be interpreted as a woman telling her boyfriend, "If you won't change our honeymoon from Bali to Hawaii, I'm getting rid of you." This album, which seems influenced by Steve Miller circa BOOK OF DREAMS, Ted Nugent's first three albums, and the harder side of Heart, was Benatar's last great album. She put out some excellent ones after this, but never quite attained the quality and consistency of the first three again.

Pat Benatar's 1981 album "Precious Time" turned out to be her only #1 album. Unfortunately it does not receive it's due. It doesn't contain any classics the way that Crimes Of Passion does, and it doesn't have any big hits like Get Nervous, Tropico or In The Heat Of The Night do, but I still think this album is amazing.
She carries on the sound from Crimes Of Passion, so if you like that album, you'll like this. There were two hit singles, Fire And Ice and Promises In The Dark. Promises stands as one of Pat's greatest recordings. The gem of the album is the title track, a 6 minute track. Keeping with the spirit of Crimes Of Passion, she also does two great covers, Just Like Me and Helter Skelter.

The album mostly was a holding pattern from Crimes Of Passion but that doesn't mean it wasn't a fantastic album. You can hear hints of the style she was going into the next album, Get Nervous, in "Evil Genius". She even dabbles in reggae with It's A Tuff Life.

If you love Pat Benatar, this album is a must have in your collection. You may not be as familiar with the singles off this as her other albums from 1979-1985, but you'll still be in a treat

Pat's 2003 album features that signature Benatar sound but updated for the masses. Opening with the rocking and surprisingly modern sounding title track, there is something to be said for a gal who can still kick some rock & roll butt after twenty some years.

She even has a little waltz about lovers in 1940s Germany, a very lovely ballad called "Please Don't Leave Me" and some fairly dreamy sequences.

Of course I'm all about the sassiness and rock and of course my girl delivers, only in a more adult way than say the "Treat Me Right or I'll kick your a** 1980 Pat" instead she says, "You think you can walk on water/ you better be careful it gets pretty deep.."

So Pat keeps up appearances on the outside while complimenting her more mature side, but yet it still feels a little lacking coming from the talent that is Mrs Giraldo.. if you're just getting into Pat I would start with the debut through her early 80s stuff but definitely go to "Gravity's Rainbow" which has the rocking vibe to it and the soul searching lyrics that Go didn't quite capture.

This Album is so Awesome! I love Pat's Beautifully Operatic Pristine Voice. she sings like an Angel. Even in her hours of Angst on a few of the songs like "GO', & "Girl".
I am so inspired by this Album of late.

My only desire is to hear more of it during her shows, instead of the old school, overplayed, same routine.
Embrace the unknown! Love It for all that it is. ROCKIN'!!

Pat and Neil are great they deserve the comfort of being able to come out into their own and not be expected to put out the old same ol lame, boring , demanded music.

the "Fans" should be more of FANS instead of choosing Fareweather ways.

This is a review written in sections from three different years.

Original 2003 Review: It's taken six years for another Pat Benatar record to be released (not counting a plethora of live and greatest hits albums which I ignored). My wife and I went to see Pat Benatar in concert on Aug 9th 2003, and it was wonderful. They had Go for sale (when we were at the concert, hadn't yet been released which was very cool to see). So I picked it up. Listened to it in the car on the way home, and on first listen, there's quite a lot of really good stuff on it. Go, Girl, Have it All, are amongst the highlights. A definite must buy - it's quite bloody good!

Update 1: As I update this in October 2004, I have to say this album is a great mix of her new adult rock style, with some smatterings of her older styles thrown in. Not to say she's returned to the 80's but this is more a rock album than Innamorata is. Right up there with Innamorata (which is my favorite all time Benatar album), in my opinion.

Update 2: As I update this yet again in April 2007, this album has grown stronger. When most people think of Pat Benatar, they think of what they remember from the 1980's. Now there's nothing wrong with the music from then, but remembering someone as an 80's artist pigenholes them into what they can be perceived in doing. Go destroys that. As some of the other reviews here have stated, Go is an ignored album. Ask your average rock fan if they have this, they'll likely say no, followed by "She's still making records", and then most likely think about the "80's stereotype". That's a damn shame. I run a website for the band Black Sabbath. I point that out, because I should, by the stereotype be the last person to love this album. The heck with that - great music is great music. This is a brilliantly strong record from start to finish. There's no filler here, and I cannot recommend this album strongly enough. It's hard to pick out individual tracks for praise because I like so many of them, but if I had to, my favorite is "Brokenhearted". But it's all good.

Pat Benatar started to see a commercial slide during the latter part of the 80's which culminated with her 90's material going pretty much ignored even though it saw her continuing to grow as an artist.

2003's Go was her attempt to break back into the modern music age with an updated sound that successfully merged her patented vocal/musical style with more modern production techniques/arranements that really worked.

I was blown away by how great this CD was. And I didn't really notice that it had come out until recently, a full 3 years after the fact.

That's because that no one at all talked about this CD when it came out originally. Pat Benatar is usually lumped in as just a has-been 80's artist. And while her commercial heyday WAS back in the early to mid 80's, unlike a lot of other artists from that era, she hasn't really waned in terms of vocal/lyrical/musical ability at all.

One thing that is great about this album is that her past albums had a ton of outside songwriters in addition to her husband/producer/guitarist/co-writer Neil Giraldo. This album was pretty much written solely by Pat and Neil. He produced it as well.

The sound is crisp without being overproduced and Neil wisely placed some more modern production touches sparingly throughout the album.

The variety on display is also astounding. There's hard rocking numbers, more laid back adult contemporary stuff and some of her most catch pop stuff in years.

While it might not transcend her classic material, I still feel that this collection of tracks can stand proudly alongside her more classic material just fine.

For someone just getting into Pat, I recommend picking up Go, her recent Greatest Hits CD and Gravity's Rainbow to start out. If you like what you hear on those, then start to delve into her individual albums that I didn't mention in the preceding sentence like Crimes of Passion, Precious Time and her adventurous but also ignored jazz/blues/big band 1990 album True Love.

Pat is still one of the most talented, sexy and stylish women to ever walk the earth and this CD comes highly recommened.

Many CDs I bought after buying records by a big star do not have the kind of hits that I listened to when I had reached the age in life that made me think I would last forever and needed to have music that was recorded on something that was going to last as long as I would. When I played this music this morning, I was surprised how familiar the songs were. Then I got to track 7: Crazy. I love songs called Crazy. I must have listened to this CD all the time just to hear this song. Right after it, something about falling back would keep me listening. Way to go!

I've had this CD for years and it's one of my favorites. Pat's vocals are incredible. The maturity of her songs are evident. Just listen to "Everybody Lay Down" and you'll be reminded of the intensity of "All Fired Up". However, listen to "Every Time I Fall Back" and you'll wonder when the change in her music happened. You won't be disappointed though. "Every Time I Fall Back" is one of her best songs ever. Buy it, listen, sit back and enjoy!

And that makes me sad because in my opinion this album is as good as anything Pat Benatar ever did. I guess timing is everything.

Pat's last album for the label she recorded for since her debut, Gravity's Rainbow is my favorite Pat Benatar album right behind Get Nervous. This may come as a shock (or surpise at least) to others since its probably an album most people don't even know about. For that it's a crying shame. Plus it's one of my favorite Benatar looks ever. That long hair, the 70's inspired clothing, the hats. Awesome! In between her 1988 album and this one, Pat recorded her blues album True Love; regarded as a flop because it didn't sell as well or gain as much airplay as other Benatar recordings, the experience left our girl more in control and happier than she had been in a long time. The idea of recording live and with a group sent her to the studio with a whole new attitude and the organic feel is very strong on Gravity's Rainbow. She rocks it out just like contemporaries of the time, this is after all an album from the 90's so don't look to it for a throw back to Pat's hey day of the 80's because these songs seem more influenced by the grungey punk that was popular around the time. Not that Pat is at all trying to be young and hip and go against her own grain, instead they've taken that raw feel and put it together with their natural ideals of melodic pop. What comes across is an album of sing along toe tappin' rockin' and smackin' grunge pop if you will. The opening of the album is actually just a few notes on a piano with a gigantic punch at the end before "Everybody Lay Down" comes flying up from the underground, this song was #1 on the Rock Radio stations and still Chrysalis opted not to release it as an official single, though promo copies were out; the song is along the lines of "All Fired Up" only instead of celebrating the people it's a throw down to the people who are just giving up on everything, "Everybody go round/ go round/ everybody lay down/ lay down/ don't nobody make a sound/ everybody lay down" before her growl comes barrelling in "everybody say hey!/ don't nobody say nooooo!" It's awesome! Then the opening guitar ripple of "Somebody's Baby" follows, "he used to be somebody's baby/ he used to matter", perhaps a strange subject for a rock single but the thought that the homeless, the drug addled, all the like were once somebody's light, the video is absolutely amazing and should've been huge. It's also very touching, you can view it on You Tube or on Pat's Classic Cuts DVD.

The rest of the album continues building up from those opening tracks, rousing rockers like "Santuary", "Tradin' Down" and "Disconnected" show that Pat didn't lose an ounce of spunk during her blues album, while the soulful "You & I" and the ballad "Everytime I Fall Back" show the toned down Pat in just as good of light as the rock songs. After the lack of promotion Chrysalis Records put into the album, and the third line of executives since Pat's signing in 1979, our girl asked for the money they owed her and walked off to do what she wanted. As for her Chrysalis swan song Gravity's Rainbow, if you find this one in the bargain bin, and you more than likely will, buy it! It don't matter if you don't remember the singles or know any of the songs, by the time you're done listening you will have a new favorite Pat Benatar album.
