Paula Abdul

I think this CD captured most of Paula Adbul's best work/songs. Most of the songs are upbeat (which is what I was wanting) and well recorded. I only gave it a 4 star vs a 5 star rating, as there are a couple songs on the CD I could 'do without'. Otherwise, it was worth the money to have tunes in the car to keep me alert.

This collection is perfect for Paula. It includes all of her hit singles. "Straight Up" without a doubt was Paula's biggest hit and it is def. on this collection. Other solid hits like, Cold Hearted,Forever Your Girl,Rush Rush,Will You Marry Me?,The Way That You Love Me,Knocked Out,The Promise Of A New Day, My Love Is For Real,and more. I am really enjoying her new song as well, "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow". She is really a talented dancer and somewhat singer.

This updated version of the American Idol judge's back catalog is a guilty pleasure that should be consumed by all. Maybe the reason I think it's so great is because Paula's music was all over the radio and pretty much set the soundtrack for my high school years. But now that I think about it, it's probably because I had a HUGE crush on Paula back in the day. Did you see the videos for "Cold Hearted Snake" and "My Love is For Real?"

Paula wasn't the greatest singer, but she knew what was hot at the time and ran with it. The music is still enjoyable as it was in the past, but probably with today's musical landscape, it is best enjoyed in small doses. After watching Paula on American Idol (and her strange behavior), plus seeing her on that Dr. Phil dating special, I think I might finally have a chance with her.

The Paula Abdul CD was puchased as a gift, and the recipient loved, loved it.

I bought this CD after the term "Greatest Hits" caught my eye, because I thought all of the songs on this Paula Abdul CD were all original singles, but when I heard my favorite Paula Abdul song Knocked Out, the CD disappointed me, because Knocked Out is a remix same as the first Greatest Hits that was released in 2000. Paula needs to put out a real greatest hits CD with just original singles instead of all of this remix stuff!

I recently replaced my cassette version of this album. The song opposites attract which also became a Coke jingle seemed to indicate that Paula Abdul would have a future in pop music. Instead she became just a figure of pop culture. But the album shows she did have some talent unlike pop princesses like Brittany Spears and Miley Cyrus. What Paula will be remembered for instead is being the nice judge on American Idol.

OMG. Paula takes me back to 5th grade. She was also a staple at school dances. I grew up with Paula! I haven't listened to Paula since about them but I just bought the "Spellbound" CD and I remembered all the favorites and every lyric. Does anyone else remember the Paula Abdul Barbie Dance VHS tape that came out about the same time? My sister and I played it nonstop and had every move down cold!

Yeah, she's not DMB. She's not supposed to be. But if you were a girl growing up in the late 80's you loved Paula and listening to her brings back great memories, no matter if "Blowing Kisses in the Wind" no longer passes for a serious love song in your life.

No one can deny Paula had those #1's in 1989-1991. What sticks out more in my mind is the endless push of her videos on MTV, starting with "Straight Up", and yes, prophetically, the CD also shot "Straight Up" too. But looking back, Paula was VERY LUCKY this CD came back from the brink of death and even made the charts at all in 1989. Remember, the CD was released in 1988 and went nowhere. I'm not sure if she filmed her videos in 1988 or was it after "Straight Up" hit #1, that her manager demanded a video be made right away to be put on MTV.

On a side note trivia -- the story goes: Aretha Franklin picked up the phone to congratulate Paula on her CD hitting #1 on the charts. Paula hung up on Aretha TWICE, thinking it was a lousy joke from someone. Only, the THIRD phone call finally convinced Paula that Aretha was the REAL THING! My question is: why would Aretha Franklin even call Paula THREE TIMES just to convince her that it was NO practical joke?! Paula's manager told the press afterwards Paula was so overcome with emotion the "Queen of Soul" would even pick up the phone to call her that it was too much for her to handle. She managed to only churn out the words "Thank You, Aretha" to Aretha's congratulations.

No one is gonna argue that Paula Abdul does not possess the pipes of a Barbra Streisand or Mariah Carey, but she does pump her vocal performances full of vigor and energy. She gives it her all with whatever limited vocal abilities she has. It's not a put-down, we can't all have the pipes of a Mariah or Celine, but Paula was helped tremendously by the endless rotation of her videos on MTV. Remember, in those days, they didn't have TRL on MTV, so can you imagine what her appearances on TRL might've done to her CD. It probably would've kept the disc on the charts much longer.

This CD has hits that "Spellbound" WISHES it had, but in "Spellbound's" defense, Paula's vocals improved. You can hear the difference on "Rush, Rush" and compare that to the thinner vocals on the "Forever Your Girl" CD. Too bad "Spellbound" lacked any decent songs except "Rush Rush", which still shot to #1 on Billboard.

Paula does have that lucky break to come back from the dead. Who knew she'd be back in our lives once again and be seen every week on Fox TV?

This album and this "career" were entirely the creation of clever video directors. In MTV's early days, savvy promoters realized flashy vids could paper over the cracks in the music. So it was with "Forever Your Girl" -- four hits, yes, but all unlistenable once stripped of the MTV images. Not for nothing did this earn the distinctive (if informal) reputation of the being the Most Returned Album in the history of the music biz.

She can dance okay, but isn't that TV show the pits?

A year earlier, I had found that in Janet Jacksons' "Rhythm Nation 1814" (which is still an R&B Masterpiece all these years later), but I remember listening to "Rush Rush" work its way to the No. 1 spot on the Singles Chart and thinking - wow, what a song. The way the violins kick in after the second verse still gets me every time.

This album was my constant companion for about a year, and there was a good reason for it. Listening to it now, its surprising that Paula's music hasn't aged like I thought it would. If anything, some of her songs sound more cutting edge than others. For example, "A Promise of a New Day" (incidentally a No. 1 single for Abdul) is way too memorable even in this day and age. Similarly, the cheesy "Vibeology" is excellent in the way it merges funk and soul into one killer track.

But its on the ballads that this album finds life. "Rush Rush" apart, this also contained "Blowin' Kisses in the Wind" with a ballet inspired video that I'll never forget. This track just WORKS - its more of a mini-symphony of sorts, with an excellent string section and general melody. Amazing. The same can be said of the underrated "To You", a perfect slice of '90s pop if there ever was one. Even on the so-called 'weaker' tracks (such as the tepid "Will you Marry Me?"), the album has a certain freshness and tenderness that still affects you when you listen to it today.

Paula Abdul might never have been a great vocalist, but the woman knew how to make an interesting album. This is one example of an un-boring album - nothing here is uninteresting or unlistenable. In fact, I would call this an essential album. Its a pity that the US version missed adding on a bonus track called "Goodnight My Love" - if you do decide to get this, I'd suggest rummaging around in used CD stores for this version of the CD. That track is really quite great.

Get this, and also check out Paula's underrated album from 1996 "Head Over Heels". Its a minor classic of sorts, and a pity that not many people even know about its' existence. Give Paula's music a chance - she's really quite something!

This is my second purchase of this album used, lmao. I had it before, but my music style has changed. It has it's moments. I love "Spellbound" and "Rock House" as dumb as those songs are they have some tight house beats!

If you can find it used and cheap buy it! I know I did, lmao @ "Vibeology" what a song.

Paula Abdul became one of the most popular artists in 1988 when she recorded her debut album "Forever your Girl" that eventually would sell over 17 Million copies, 3 years later in 1991 she was still popular, and that wasn't strange since she had been on the charts constantly since. This album isn't as full of dance-pop as her debut though. Here she'll even try a few ballads and shows other sides of herself then choreographic uptempo songs. She had clearly matured and wanted to deliver something more personal (She even co-wrote songs this time) which we can see on slower songs like "Will You Marry Me" and "Blowing Kisses on the Wind", both hits but most of all the big hit "Rush Rush" a ballad that reached #1. The song had an very special video directed by George Lucas! and feauturing Keanu Reeves portaying her boyfriend. Midtempo "Promise of a New Day" also reached number 1 and "Vibeology" a classic uptempo became a decent hit aswell, most other songs of this album that weren't singles are biuncy uptempo's kind of like on her debut. Eventhough this album is 15 years old, it doesn't sound dated at all, many of the songs would still sound fresh today. "Spellbound" eventually sold 8 million copies, which isn't bad, but unfortunately she wouldn't have any more hits afterwards and her third and last album "Head Over Heels" didn't sell good at all. Possibly cause she tried to emancipate herself from the youthful dance-pop girl she was in the beginning of her career. However, another good album from a good artist that sadly doesn't record albums anymore.

Paula Abdul made some great albums and superb videos and this is as good as any--though one likes her first best. The only minor quibble is the second track political song. One's patience for artists telling one how to think is slight and, since the song is an attack on George Bush SR, it is terribly dated and incomprehensible out of historical context. Just shut up and sing please. Leave the thinking to the people who don't have mansions and limos and have to work for a living.
Still. Excellent album and highly recommended. Strange cover though with Paula dressed up like a crow......................

Back before the new millenium, before the music industry started to go downhill, before wanna-be's like Britney came along, there was REAL talent!

Artists like Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Janet, Gloria and Paula are REAL talents and they will always be far superior to people like Britney!

Paula actually SINGS! She has a VOICE! I have loved Paula since her Forever Your Girl album and this is another favorite and must have for teen pop and people who are fans of Paula! Forget the wanna-be's like Britney Spears, Paula is unique, has an amazing voice and all her songs are fun to dance and sing along to!

ALL of Paula's songs on here are 5 star quality!

This album has so many different types of music, it's just incredible! From the ballads like Rush Rush and Blowing Kisses In The Wind to dance numbers like The Promise Of A New Day and Vibeology to a country style like Alright Tonight to a weird and cool sounding song like Spellbound to a more rock sounding song like Rock House! All 11 tracks are so awesome and unique to this day and any fan of teen pop should pick up this Paula album!

I was going through some of my old CD's and came across this CD and immidiately remembered how much I loved Paula "back in the day". She had a fun, funky sound and this album shows how she had the ability to deliver a mediocre song and inject it with so much personality that you had to take notice. Unfortunately, there are no real "singles" on this album. My love is for Real is an amazing song, and an outstanding choice for the first single. In fact, it still sounds great today. As far as I can recall, the real tragedy is that the album lacked promotion, and paulas fans had moved on after her 4 year hiatus. The sound of music had changed and acts like TLC were dominating the charts. Give it a try, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised with the quriky little jem that is this album.

this album, i thought was the best she put out, dont get me wrong i love paula's music and everyone laughs at me, im sure im not the only one. i just love the more grown-up sound it vibes out to us. if virgin records would or gave the album it's credit, there would be four or five top ten singles..my love is for real it's real fresh nothing out there now could put that song to the test..crazy cool i thought was outstanding if it was released at a remix if i were your girl absoulty would made a great single.. i really do think that everyone has this impression that paula bombed out for four years and never gave her the credit she should get, maybe if her fans put out a voice the album could be remixed and be re-released and put her back on the charts were she belongs

I do love every album of Paula's. I've been a fan of hers from the very start. But this is the best cd to me, because she's a little beyond the pop, and moved in a more funky direction here. The songs are amazing and really cool. If I Were Your Girl, My Love Is For Real and Crazy Cool are the best best songs here, but really they are all good. She has kept her unique voice throughout the years, but the music has progressed and if she was great at the start, - just imagine how excellent she is now. I really wish her new music (which has been promised) would take a front seat and she'd get on with recording a new cd for all her die-hard fans (especially if it's this kind of quality).

I guess you can't please everyone all the time. It seems that by the time this record dropped in 1995, Paula wasn't really welcomed back to the pop fold with open arms. And while clearly this is Paula's best work, from reading others reviews...most people thought her first two records were better than this.

I have to say that Paula began to continue what she started on "Spellbound". Creating a record that could not only produce radio ready singles, but also have album material that could hold its own next to the singles as well. Here, with "Head Over Heels" Paula accomplishes this.

The record literally pulsates with groove ready tracks. The funk play of "Crazy Cool" (which is even better in its single version) is slick, hip, & well...refreshing. The music on this record unlike her first two doesn't automatically date itself, which is why this record can be spun today & be seen as more than a nostalgia trip.

Songs such as the Middle Eastern tinged "My Love Is For Real" (possibly Paula's best single?) featuring vocals by the late Ofra Haza & the Motown pizazz of "Ain't Never Gonna give You Up" with an irresistable horn hook smoulder, & clearly outshine most of the pop songs on the radio today.

No, Paula isn't a diva like singer. But with each recording Paula's voice has gotten stronger, & her charisma shines through every song & she carries a tune very well.

Many fans complained that while there was good material here, there was far too much filler. For me, there were about only two tracks that could've been left off. That said the songs here are just simply better than most of the filler on her first two records, & with each spin the album tracks get better.

In short I recommend that if you are starting off as a Paula fan, this is a good record to start with. While (criminally) no longer in print, this is a record you can find in most second hand used music stores today, & I advise you to pick up probably one of the most underrated pop records of the 1990's.

Abdul never expected that her comeback as a judge in American Idol will revive her long hybernating famous status, indeed miss Abdul do knows what it is to be at top, and then flop, and get back on your feet, Paula's last effort in music is an impressive mature album that didn't got the attention it deserve mainly for two reasons, first: she got out of the music for far too much time(between Spellbound and Head...4 years), second: the face of music has change, POP had to survive been less POP more R&B, to compete against a more angry rock radio audience hypnotized by VH1's favorites like Morissette, Jewel, Merchant, etc. Paula didn't stick to the formula of those days, "the result a commercial flop", but not artisticaly, the proof is the leading single "My Love Is For Real" an exquisitte pop-r&b masterpiece, with such an enchanting sound, driven by an midestearn sound, and featuring world wide known singer Ofra Haza, this is a song that preceeded many songs like Sting "Desert Rose", the message of the song, and the sound of it, makes this a underrated song, that should get some attention because it sounds timeless, "Head Over Heels" begans with "Crazy Cool" the second single produced by the Family Stand, the funkadelic group that produced her previous album Spellbound, the beat constantly wins over the lyrics, a great tune that failed to reached the attention of the radiowaves, that enchantes with the ay ay ay chorus line, although the single version is better, the original version included here has it's worth the listen, "Ain't Never Gonna Give You Up" it's a song that it's old school driven with a lot of funkyness and jazz in it, totally danceable, although the songs stand up for great meaningful lyrics and great music, the inclution of Color Me Badd harmonized voices as an acompanion made this song sound a little bit dated, but still enjoyable, "Love Don't Come Easy" it's a latin flavored song, that tells a story about a latin girl in love, great dance, it reminds you a bit of 40's decade dance song, great production in this one, "If I Were Your Girl" melancolic, sexy song, written by "Wings" star "Crystal Benard", has great lyrics to it, but somehow the song got lost in monotony, although it's worth the listen, specially the part when Paula sings " I keep you up all night...(twice)..." delightful and mature, "Sexy Thoughts" although a favorite at the beginning when I bought this, time pass by, and it's the most dated-sound-alike in the whole album, but if you want to hear the good stuff, well is easy to dance with and amazing mixup vocals, "The Choice Is Yours" the most hiphop flavored song in the whole album produced by "Dallas Austin", intelligent lyrics, great beat, should've been a great single material by those years, "Ho-Down" one of the best songs of the album, funny lyrics, speed singing, Cab Calloway, 40's sounds with Hip Hop, great song....great to dance to(if u can). "Under The Influence" many say this is Paula's rendition to the Beatles 60's sounds, easy to swallow and easy to remember, so I guess they're alright..."I Never Knew It" well I never knew this song sounded so cheesy pop, but after all it works, silly-love song with a easy pop beat that carries the song to the end, "Get Your Groove On" disco-a-like song, mindless lyrics, great beat, a Paula-dance-alike song, great for an upbeat time, "Missing You"....I just love the way Abdul delivers the line "Casablanca and wild orchid I sent to you...." great vocals, one of Paula's best, amazing lyrics in a simple love song..."It's All About Feeling Good", it's an R&B-dance stomper, the title say it all, it's not a love song, it's just a song to feel good, "Cry For Me" well, I have always said that this is one of Abdul less likeable interpreation, but in time I have learned that this song has strong lyrics, and a sincere vocal deliver, if you got the chance to get the Japanese Import, you can get your hands on "Crazy Love" a typical fun Paula joint, infectuous and easy to follow song, great tune, "High School Crush" a story ballad, that not exactly portrait about what the title talks about, it's not a 30 yeard old singing about teenager love, it's about a mature woman singing to her long time lost hughschool crush who returns to her hometown and telling him that this time is not a joke, it's for real...great message, Head Over Heels it's an album that inspire you to dance, to love, and to forget each days problems, it's just an album that deserved better, great LP try it, you won't regret it....amazing album.....and waiting for the next Abdul album after 10 years....

Paula is probably at the top of talentless 80's stars. She's actually pretty horrible, but the songs were catchy, and she had a cool wardrobe. These remixes are fun and dance-able. It's fun, but I wouldn't pay much for it.

Mediocre vocalist who disguises her shortcomings by working with very talented producers who multi-layer and process her thin vocals. This is a perfect example of style over substance.

On the positive side...if you're looking for something to work out to rather than listen to, this CD would probably be perfect for you.

i like paula abdul's shut up and dance because it has good remixes on it. my favorites are staght up, knocked out,cold hearted,forever your girl,one or the other,and the remix medley. you will like this remix album. i think randy,ryan,and simon will like it too. ed wilson

I had heard "Cold Hearted" and "Straight Up" for a while before learning it was done by Paula.

Many of the other reviewers pointed out this is a good aerobic project. Allow me to mention what I noticed. There are eight cuts on it. The first seven are individual songs. The final one is a seven song medley which includes six of the seven songs already mentioned. ("One Or The Other" is not part of the medley, and is replaced by "State Of Attraction".)

If you want some good dance music, you would enjoy this.

this is a great mix! i use this as work out music..it gets the blood pumping..all the mixes are awesome... just shut up .and buy this it rocks!

This is a very good collection of Paula's radio hits that I remember from the late 80s and early 90s. Paula was a good singer and dancer and the music is fun. It makes a person want to grove to it and dance. An enjoyable pop/dance music listening experience. Paula was better as her own artist rather than as Simon Cowell's sidekick on TV. Oh well, better to be a has-been than a never-was. Paula's music was a good contribution to the radio at the time, and this CD is a good contribution to a music fan's collection.

No matter what anyone has to say about Paula today, she was the bomb back in the late 80's, early 90's. There can't be one person out there who wasn't hooked on Straight Up or Cold Hearted at the time. This collection by far is awesome just because of the video versions included that you can't find anywhere else, especially Cold Hearted, Forever Your Girl, and more importantly Opposites Attract. I would have liked for them to have used the regular version of Knocked Out instead of the remixed version. Sure, a lot of people said she couldn't sing very well and that her voice was digitally enhanced, but nowadays whose isn't? She must have done something right to have sold millions of records and garnered 6 number ones within a 3 year span. No matter, Paula is still tops and I really wish that she would put out some new material! This is one of those cds that when you put it on, you can remember exactly what you were doing the first time you heard or even saw the video for Straight Up. As it says in Vibeology, "Go Paula, Go Paula, Go Go Go Paula". Haha.... :)

Let's admit it, folks, we all sing in the car. One of my favorites to pop in the ol' CD player is this Paula Abdul GH. It has all of the goodies. This is also one of the good 80s/90s albums for dancing.

I love Paula Abdul's music and I love American Idol. When I found out she was a singer I downloaded all of her songs and I love them all.
I think she should go back into singing and dancing beause she is so awsome at both .
Paula Abdul is defently my idol!

Paula Abdul made some great albums and superb videos and this is as good as any--though one likes her first best. The only minor quibble is the second track political song. One's patience for artists telling one how to think is slight and, since the song is an attack on George Bush SR, it is terribly dated and incomprehensible out of historical context. Just shut up and sing please. Leave the thinking to the people who don't have mansions and limos and have to work for a living.
Still. Excellent album and highly recommended. Strange cover though with Paula dressed up like a crow......................

Artists like Mariah, Whitney, Celine, Janet, Gloria and Paula are REAL talents and they will always be far superior to people like Britney!

Paula actually SINGS! She has a VOICE! I have loved Paula since her Forever Your Girl album and this is another favorite and must have for teen pop and people who are fans of Paula! Forget the wanna-be's like Britney Spears, Paula is unique, has an amazing voice and all her songs are fun to dance and sing along to!

This album has so many different types of music, it's just incredible! From the ballads like Rush Rush and Blowing Kisses In The Wind to dance numbers like The Promise Of A New Day and Vibeology to a country style like Alright Tonight to a weird and cool sounding song like Spellbound to a more rock sounding song like Rock House! All 11 tracks are so awesome and unique to this day and any fan of teen pop should pick up this Paula album!

This middle eastern oriented song, is a mature release for the sweet Paula Abdul, the song, states that no matter what, her love is for real, and to put everything behind, leaving loneliness in the past, wow!, so sexy!, this song was way under rated song, this should have been at least a top 10 song!, it was #28 back in 1995. The music and backgrounds sound so enchanting and exotic!, of course it was a predescesor to many songs like Sting's "Desert Rose", Mandy Moore's "In My Pocket" or Truth Hurts "Addictive", buy it worth every penny! listen!, the remixes are extremely great for the time it came...truly club classics edited not the long long versions, so good!
