Plan B

I first heard one of Plan B's tracks on a compilation of UK Hip-Hop. I instantly had to find the album. It's a great mix of the grime sound along with incredibly deft wordplay that rivals any of the stateside MC's with similar skills. But, what sets him apart from other artists is his use of an acoustic guitar to help him tell the stories he likes to spin. I recommend this for fans of hip-hop who are feeling as though they are getting bored and for fans of the grime sound.

Plan B has crafted a phenomenal CD with the same lyrical fury as Eminem on the Marshall Mathers CD, sans the comedic relief. There's no "club banger" or "Top 40" radio single on this disc to disrupt the flow. Almost every single track on this CD speaks of tragedy and life in the underbelly of England but instead of bragging about his struggle in the "hood" he creates vivid stories over acoustic guitars with beautifully sung choruses...The kid's got a great voice on top of his rhyming ability. Do yourself a favor and pick this gem up

Not only is this young Brit brilliant lyrically (he obviously gets inspiration from Eminem), he is brilliant musically as well. This is a seamless album that mixes and matches his energetic and imaginative verses with cool rock, solid hip hop beats, acoustic guitar and catchy vocal hooks. His subject range from the urban predictable - drugs, sex, lousy dads & gun crime - to the totally unexpected - `honour' killings, lousy step-dads & bereavement - with practically everything else in between.

I'd seen him perform live prior to this album coming out so I already knew the dude had skills but even so, this album blew me away. It's strong worded stuff as one would expect, but he delivers with a charisma and sense of humour that is infectious, even when he's being dead serious. If he doesn't get recognition and critical acclaim if not commercial success, there is no justice. Fans of alternative hip hop should definitely give him a try. He's worth it.

i love this cd! it's been in constant rotation for months. a friend recommended it to me after seeing plan b play with modest mouse in seattle. track 2's "love" is my favorite. i listen to indie rock stuff and hip hop stuff and plan b's seems to be both at the same time.

The first time I saw Plan B was when he opened for a Modest Mouse show in Seattle. His album is amazing, I listened to it for two weeks straight when I first bought it. I am glad that Plan B is finally getting some exposure, as Like a Ship Sailing is an amazing album. Much better instrumental beats than Land of the Loops, with more jazz samples, and its not too mellow. If you get anything out of my review of Plan B, it is that the album rocks and everyone should have a copy most definitely. support the great Northwest bands and enjoy.

This is one of those great Alternative albums from the early '90's which should have done better than it did, but this was pre-Nirvana (I think). Not only is this album packed with great songs, but they're all catchy. If you like Social Distortion, you'll probably like this. That's about the only comparison I can think of at the moment, though they're not as dark and country tinged as SD. There's not a single throw-away track on here, and that's why it gets 5 stars. I'm going to buy the CD now, because I only have it on cassette. Furthermore, I'm going to look into their other albums, now that I know there were others.

Plan B attempted to meld metal with alternative, the way many later, better bands did, but with much less success. They come off as a slightly cooler, hipper version of Guns & Roses, but when you get right down to it, who needs another G&N?
