SOiL

Scars is a good modern hard rock album. It could definitely be used as a hype album for almost any sport. It just plainly rocks anyones sox. From the lead singers scruffy voice, to the drummer often sounding like he's having a seizure on every single symbol, it's great. Even when the verses
aren't that good , they seem to really step it up when the chorus hits. So listen to all the songs completly through.


**Tracklist/Ratings**

1.Breaking Me Down (5/5) - Fast song that has the singer hitting verses like he's taking exlax and needs to get to bathroom quickly. It's not rap, but close to it. Great Stuff. Think Static-X.

2.Halo (5/5) - No not the game. It's a hard rocking song. "I will stone you, stone you, wrap my arms around you, I will stone you, stone you, my little Halo". A catchy chorus.

3.Need To Feel (3/5) - Not that good. The singer sounds a lot like Chris Cornell on this one. It sounds a little off-key.

4.Wide Open (5/5) - Like 'Halo', the chorus is really catchy with a great melody. A little Korn'ish sounding too.

5.Understanding Me (3/5) - The verse is hard rocking but the chorus is horrible. I hate when that happenes.

6.My Own (3/5) - Great build up, but the singing is nothing special.

7.Unreal (5/5) - Awesome mellow guitar intro with some awesome vocals.

8.Inside (5/5) - Addicting and surely to get your head moving.

9.Two Skins (5/5) - Same as 'Inside'. Turn it up ;).

10.The One (5/5) - A great song with a great melodic tune. More of a radio-friendly song.

11.New Faith (4/5) - Catchy chorus.

12.Why (3/5) - Decent song with a lot of bass ;).

13.Black 7 (4/5) - Another bass lead rocker.

I picked this cd up a few years back and when i head the band was releasing their new cd which you can read my review about under that cd i just had to pop this album back in to remined me why i loved these guys. From the second you pop this cd in to the very last dark track you will be bangin your head and screaming for more, this is truly one of the best cd's i own and will always love it although Ryan is now the lead man for drowning pool!!!

This is one of the few albums that I can listen to from track 1 through the final track and enjoy every single song. The album had 'radio friendly rock' written all over it, but it never got much attention besides the one single "Halo." Unfortunately Ryan (lead vocals) left the band and has since joined Drowning Pool.

Good rythims, good vocals, fun lyrics....first saw this on a WoW pvp video and had to have it.(Video PAT-PVP2)

True Score:4.8 a couple songs toward the end could have been better
Replay / Value: 5.0 always something good to listen to no matter how many times you've already heard it.

I love many cd's but no matter how great a cd seems to be at first the routine of listening to the same songs repeatedly makes even the best cd's dreadful. I've had Soil's cd for 4 years now, seems like longer and could be, I bought it when it was first sold. Still enjoy their sound. It's probably safe to say after all this time SOIL is my ultimate favorite group in my ultimate favorite genre.
The best comparison I can make on Soil is to take what is good about Godsmack's industrial vocals and style of music(on Godsmacks good songs). The music is loud, energetic,thickly layered, strong, heavy and dark.. perhaps a little like Spineshank? Lyrics aren't generic so a wonderful job of writing their own words. The drums are particarly powerful, like metalica, and push my sub hard.
As pleasant of a recording and well mixed as you can get for hard metal recording.

Oh yeah! This is a great CD. If you like rock-out metal with good melody and a great vocalist, you will love this CD. I had never heard of Soil before, and was a little apprehensive about buying it. My battle buddy in Iraq told me that this was worthwhile, so I trusted him and went ahead and got it. Amazon got it all the way to my military address within 7 days of ordering, and I could not have been happier about my decision to buy this. I have the whole CD added on my MP3 player! Soil needs to keep 'em coming, this is great stuff.

as a fan of this band, i admit i do like this better than scars. but i think their new album, "true self" is a lot better. On this, they dont go as heavy, angry, or agressive as on "true self" granted, on their new album it is a whole new vocalist, but i think they have a whole side that they didnt show on "redefine"
all in all, i give this album a 3/5

This is an awesome cd if you liked scars you will love the first 7 songs on this cd however after that the cd just seems to kinda drag on but it still has some perks for the average Soil fan!!! If you have this album and like it but dont have Scars, get scars right now and be blown away!!!

Heard this Redefine on the Comcast Rock Music Channel. I liked the song so I bought the cd, and boy am I glad I did. This cd rocks. Very well put together, something you can listen to over and over again and it doesn't get old. Would love to know what their web site is, the cd jacket says (...), but when you type it in you hit a dead end "vacant" web site.

First auditions always lie. I was a little skeptical so I thought I was going to be let down. By the 3rd time through I was beginning to get into Redefine. This cd is a definite must have! A definite don't give up on it either! If you don't like it at first, remember most great albums that don't get old start like that.
With this release, the success of this release I should say, SOIL has become my most favorite band. For a guy that's listened to thousands of bands, to be able to name one group as my favorite is awesome. It's the first time I've ever had a fave.
After SOIL released SCARs years and years ago, I wasn't sure if it could be done again. I knew that the cd certainly left me breathless and with a good impression of what SOIL was capable of. Years later, that cd is still ranked in my top 5 favorite. This cd has the same quality that SCARs did. It also sounds as if they done a little renovating of their own style and went with a little more technological innovative edge. Well done, very classy is all I can say. The new, yet familiar, sound is very welcome. Once again the lyrics are among the best!
I thank Soil and God for such an entertaining cd!

This was a polarizing CD for me compared to previous efforts. I'm having a hard time adjusting ot the new singers voice.

I do really like tracks 4 & 5 (The Last Chance & True Self).
The rest of the tracks I just couldn't get into.

Sadly, this might be my last Soil purchase but there is a silver lining.

The latest Drowning Pool CD is worth a listen if you've liked previous Soil releases. That is where singer Ryan McCombs is at now.
I wouldn't say that DP is as good as the previous Soil efforts but it is good and shows promise. There is a ray of hope for even better rock to come!

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Soil live in Atlanta Georgia where they were opening for Mushroomhead and let Me tell you that this band is going places despite any difficulties they may have in the past. I bought this cd straight from the merchandise vendor and listened to it on the ride home from the concert and it was almost as good as watching them live. If you're a diehard underground and mainstream metal fan you'll love this cd and all of their others. The only thing that sucked about Soil at the show is that their merchandise sold so quick after their set that I couldn't buy all of their cds so here I am at good old Amazon to order every cd they have ever produced instead!

Mistress Malice

Soil's first album, "Scars", was really solid and made me an instant fan of the band. Their second album, "Redefine", was also good, but in my opinion, not as good as the first, lacking the aggression present in "Scars". The only flaw with "Scars" was that each song sounded like the others, and there wasn't much variety musically. The new release, "True Self", takes the aggression of "Scars", but fixes the problem of repetitive sounding songs, making this their best album so far. The new vocalist AJ Cavalier sounds a lot like the previous singer Ryan McCombs, but AJ has more grit in his voice and more intensity than his predecessor. If you liked "Scars" more than "Redefine", you will love "True Self".

I really loved soil before but after i heard the old singer left for drowning pool and soil got a new singer i wasn't expecting much from the band anymore. After the new album finally came out I was shocked when i finally got around to listening to the new album. They still sound like soil and the new singer sounds similar to the old singer but..BETTER. Every song on here sounds like soil but even better than before and you can tell they worked on the music because there are no fillers. This is easily my favorite soil album now. My favorite tracks include "jaded" and "until its over".

this is truly a good start for a new vocalist to a good band. AJ cavalier has the same gritty vocals as Soil's previous singer, but with a wider range. And, with a new singer, comes a heavier, more agressive form of music to fit in with the changing tides of the music scene. Soil kicks out some seriously heavy jams with this release. It should be interesting to see what ex singer ryan mccombs now does with drowning pool. 5/5

Favorite songs: "Fight for life," "The Last Chance," "True Self," "Hear Me"

This cd is onther hit for this hardcore band and i can't wait untill their new Cd "REDEFINE" comes out I will be the first one in line to get that one keep it up Soil!!!!!!!!

Yes, I do like `Scars' better; Soil took this edgy talent and fine tuned it in their next CD. But if you are a Soil fan, pick this one up too. More mellow than `Scars', its still good rock but has a tendency to drift back to an `earlier 90's' sound. `Broken Wings' and `No More, No Less' are the hardest rock tunes, `She' is not one of my favorites, a little too mellow and generic but some great guitar at the finish, `Same ol' Trip' is the best song with driving guitar and drums, and `Yellow Lines' is a dark finish, slow with a depressing undertone and great vocals. All in all, pretty good. Get `Scars' first, but if you like it then grab this one too, its definitely worth the price.

This album has a little something for everyone. There is a dark track, a rockin' track, and many others that seem to sound like all the rest. Do not get me wrong, I did like this one but I am left wondering if this is the top of this bands game. But let's get down to it shall we...
THE GOOD: 1) BLUES METAL. By this statement I mean that there is a definite blues sound to their metal. Kind of reminds me a young Soundgarden and this is a very good thing. 2) DIVERSITY. By this I mean that this band does not focus entirely on ripping it up and they do not spend all their time figuring out what will get the most airplay. 3). CHEAP PRICE. If Amazon.com is selling it for $..., then can you imagine what your local store is offering? $... or maybe lower, can not go wrong there.
THE BAD: 1) TRACKS TEND TO REPEAT. While the tracks on the whole might be diverse, taken individually they have a tendency to sound the same. This is one of the BIG differences from SOUNDGARDEN and might spell the end of this band. 2) LEAD SINGER. Ryan McCombs and Adam Zedal share time in this catagorie and they need to do some growing both in the complexity and originality of their sound. 3) RAW. Yup, there is no touch of polish on this one. I like things this way, but many people I have talked to about this one see this as a negative and I was forced to put this under the negative catagorie. Each track could have used a little more time, but this does not give the whole album a rushed feel.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Over-all, I am not sure where this one falls. If you are looking for a blues/metal sound there are better bands out there. This offering does not seem to define a catagorie nor does it fit in to one either. Tough call on this one but I am going to have to say that although Hailo stands out, the rest of the album is not really worth it. If you are standing in line and you have to make a choice between something new, like this album, or an old favorite choose the oldie. This album IS NOT a must have album.

Soil's El Chupacabra EP is incredibly good. If i hadn't heard their Throttle Junkies album, I would have given this 5 stars. If I had given this 5 stars, I'd have to give Throttle Junkies 6 or 7 stars, and there isn't an option for that!
