Fans, listen up. When Sammy sings we listen! Does anyone have a question? I loved "Livin It Up", you have to have the Cabo life style in mind when you enjoy that CD. I did exactly what my main man Sammy told me to do, I went there once, now I've been there twice....I'm sure to be there again.
Regarding this CD, it's great...I love the music and passion Sammy hands us, are you ready? You will be tapping your toe, and snapping your gum baby....Happy New Year

Another great job from Mr.Sammy...I would by any cd with his name on it even without listening...rock n roll man...

If you like ALL Sammy, dating back to Montrose and his eclectic '70s solo catalog, CUF may appeal to you. There are songs that rock (like his '80s catalog), and some with a country-ish twang.

In the early years, Sammy had a borderline R&B influence (listen to Sam's did a cover of "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" or "Keep on a Rockin'"). Although it's nice to hear some variety, you've got to be in the mood to hear some of this. I think the same applies to the 'twang' or 'Buffet' influenced material he's put out lately.

Let's face it... If he doesn't try to appeal to a new audience (and it would appear that country is the path of least resistance), it's going to hurt our (Sammy fans) chances of enjoying future new albums or tours. I doubt any teens or college kids are rushing out to buy a 61 year-old rocker's album, so Sam's gotta expand the market with the 35+ crowd.

Give the album a couple listens before you ditch it. If you don't feel it, you have nearly 35 years of other Sammy material to listen to.

This is certainly not a one star album, nor is it a five star. I would give it a 3.5 if I could, but that's not an option on Amazon.

Keep On A-Rockin'!

I've been a Sammy Hagar fan for many years now and i have to say that this latest attempt at creating music is just that.. "an attempt". there's nothing here that hints at reinvention whatsoever. Sam prides himself on his tequila and his livin' it up lifestyle. the inclusion of that particular lifestyle in his music has not carried over very well on this disc or his previous one for alot of fans. The title song in and of itself..sucks. "Psycho Vertigo" is okay and "Peeping through a hole" would have been alright if i hadn't already heard Jeff Scott Soto sing that with Soul Sirkus. The Soul Sirkus version blows this one to pieces. the rest of the disc is filler. It just doesn't have the elements of a "rockin'" Sammy Hagar record. Sammy is capable of creating better more listenable hard rock music even at the ripe old of 60! I really hope that the music that he's recorded with Satriani,Mike and Chad is far superior to this latest spud. I'll be waiting to hear the music from that "project" whatever name they decide to give it when it finally comes out.

This cd rocks! Plain and simple good ole' hard rock'n roll. His vocals are superb. I would suggest giving it a shot. Every time Hagar comes out with a new release it leaves me wanting more. (I wish there were more songs to this. I thought the song "Open" should have been put on this cd also).

If you are left unsatisfied by not having enough sammy with van halen. This is a greatest hits package featuring his solo material. It covers a littel bit from his montrose years, film soundtracks, released demoes and recent material. This is a album to get if you are just discovering sammy hagar. I would then listen to his solo albums

This is one of the greatest artist i've heard, real rock n' roll, i really liked this album, songs like give to live, and the Over The Top Soundtrack Winner Takes it all, one album that you just can lay back and listen to

This is a great mix of old Sammy and new Sammy!! A must have!!

The only thing that would have made this a more perfect release, would be to add a second disc. Sammy is too big for a one disc best of.

The best thing about this release is the inclusion of the soundtrack songs that don't appear on his regular albums. The unreleased stuff is great to have too.

This is the best of Sammy Hagar, not the best of Van Halen, so I do not complain about not having any VH tunes on here, this is all out Sammy (which I prefer anyway).

A second disc would have given more room for the many must have songs missed on this release, like more Montrose (Rock Candy, Space Station #5, Paper Money), and so many more of the 70's era stuff; and where is Three Lock Box?

While it could be a bit better with more tracks, I still think as is, it is one of the best compilations focusing on his entire solo career. Most of the best of releases on him out there are either exclusively early era songs, or later Geffen era stuff. This one crosses the barriers and has it all. Like I said, having the one-off soundtrack and unreleased tunes make this an even better best of!!

You say that love has got you down, well that's bullsXXt! If love has got you down then love can pick you right back up! There's something decidedly pathological about EVH, those increasingly deconstructed solos eh, but Sammy solo is a sure shot of recalcitrant optimism. I'll get back up somehow and with a little luck, I'm bound to win! Solid. No wonder he's been my roadmap, role model, high school hero! I'm from St. Louis! And I'll fall in love again! No rollover, no rebate, no frequent flier miles, baby. There's only one way to rock! Got love, got passion! I'm on it, I'm in it, long shot, long haul. The world is still revolving. Ok, I'll be the one NOT to give this album 5 stars. Don't get me wrong, it is a great album. I just have to think an album is five steps above awesomely great to give it five stars. This is a fun album to listen to. Sammy's solo stuff, i think, is a lot better than what he did with Van Halen. And this is the person who has every album with "Van Halen" listed as the band on it. This is a good romp of an album. Enjoy.

Simply one of the greatest rock n roll albums ever made. If you don't have it, get it.

This is by far the best complete Sammy Hagar album ever released. The songs are well crafted hard rock gems. No other album in Sammy's career ever had this many quality songs all together. Even his Van Halen days didn't give us an album that matches these standards. Standing Hampton is one of the greatest albums ever made and has been on my list since the first time I heard it when I was a teenager. The album's killer grooves contain the top notch "Heavy Metal", "There's Only One Way To Rock", I'll Fall In Love Again" & "Baby, It's You". The albums lesser known tracks will not disappoint you as they are just as stellar as the singles. Hagars cover of "Piece Of My Heart" is fine version even if not as good as Janis's. I can't say how great Standing Hampton is you just have to hear it for yourself. I only wish that more people gave this incredible album its due!

If Standing Hampton was a food, I'd eat 3 meals a day, if it was a house, I'd live there till I died. If it was a car, I'd drive it till the wheels fell off..

..but that's applying Music to mere material possesions, and music is much more than that, as we know. This album embodies Really great butt-kicking, sweet & classy rock and roll. From the opening track "I'll fall in Love again", which is an awesome heart-felt tune, to heavier romps like "Baby's on Fire" and "Heavy Metal", this is a complete rock music masterpiece. Great Guitars and heavy drums included!. This album is really great because of all the mid-tempo rockers in between. Not power ballads, not tons of fast rock songs, nothing with a dark, brooding background, just good fun rock and roll Sammy Hagar Style. Sammy's music is so much more, it's an experience, and takes you to a place called FUN where the sun never goes down and the beer never goes dry!

If you like Some of his other CD's, or enjoyed his songs with Van Halen from 1986-96, then I strongly recommend you look into adding this one to your collection. As I said before, Its my favorite album. Cars and Houses come and go, but I've been listening to this album off and on for the past 20 years, and never grow tired of it. It's great for the house, parties, or for driving on that long deserved road trip.

This is not Sammys best solo work,but it is good. Songs like "Remember the hero,s" "I don,t need love" "the room" and 3 lock box is the reason i sought this disc out after owning the tape years ago. Theres only one way to rock! (even if it does mean keyboards are involved!)

I've been hopped over up on VH, shooting off endorphins like crazy, only natural, my antennae is wired tight and I'm finding my BOY. So far so good. THEN there's this little business about HER. The GIRL. What's she been doing is firing rounds of pheromones, straight at me, zap, triple speed. From a distance, no problem, I'm coherent, but, man, CLOSE up, her SMELL just sends me to HAPPY HELL. What a mad biological caper, I'm heartSICK in the head. I lose my will, my mind, my memories, my soul. Luckily, she keeps dropping me, so I keep regaining my equilibrium. She don't even KNOW me 'cause I'm NEVER ME when I'm NEAR HER. WHOO! Rush * bang * crash * ouch! WHOA! Whew, I'm all wised up now ~ naturally wired ~ CURED! I won't be a slave to ANYone who don't BELIEVE in love. I wanna stay foolish! Crank it UP!

this a real good 80's album from sammy and crew not as strong as standing hampton! but a must for hagar fans

Three lock box is vintage hagar, I love this album! The release of this 1983 was just a glimpse of things to come from Sammy Hagar for the NEXT 25 YEARS: Great vocals, superb songwriting, melodic & anthemic rock that filled a niche, then overflowed and overpowered most around it!

Rise of the Animal - The Room song jumps into this hard driving rock tune.

The rest of the tunes are fun and rockin' as well. If you have not heard sammy hagar, or liked some of his work with Van Halen, you should start with this album. I personally feel his best solo works are this, VOA, and Standing Hampton. All are gems, and all are multi-platinum recordings.

THREE LOCK BOX is good-time rock album that has some serious lyrics- "Remember The Heroes" is about Vietnam, and "I Wouldn't Change A Thing", describes life's experiences. The blend of Bob Seger/Ted Nugent Detroit rock, Skynyrd/Outlaws Southern rock, and Humble Pie/Foghat/Montrose heavy metal that was present on STANDING HAMPTON remains, but a bit of Journey-esque pop-rock creeps in on the hit single "Your Love Is Driving me Crazy." This and its predecessor, along with MARCHING TO MARS, RED VOODOO, TEN 13, and NOT 4 SALE, are Sammy Hagar's finest solo albums. The fact that Hagar currently advocates sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's recent trumped-up drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, as well as more funding for law enforcement, makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

"Suckers walk / Money talks / But it can't touch my three-lock box."

That, my friends, is just one sampling of the profoundly deep and thought-provoking lyrics found throughout this compilation honoring world class wordsmith Sammy Hagar, who was not only unquestionably the most erudite lyricist of his day but may be of any day. How about another so eloquently stated example:

"Crank up the drums / Crank out the bass / ...There's only one way to rock!"

As this quote demonstrates, one of Hagar's lyrical strengths was how much he left open to interpretation--despite multiple suggestions contained within that particular composition, he ultimately leaves it to the listener to deduce that singular way to rock. There are so many layers of depth there. The man is also a master of every facet of wordplay in his poetry: oxymoron, onomatopoeia, puns, satire, dramatic irony, the list goes on.

And of course this volume contains his long-championed vehicular rebellion "I Can't Drive 55", the brilliance of which lingers on in the mind long after listening ("Take my license, all that jive" is still today a catchphrase among Hagar disciples).

But there is so much more to admire here. And it doesn't even scratch the surface of all the poetry he penned as the singer for Van Halen--like "It's got what it takes / So tell me why can't this be love", or "You know my heart is true / Oh whoa, I can't stop loving you". It does not get deeper than that. Hagar's poetry may not be the easiest to grasp on first listen, but that intellectual challenge is what keeps one coming back for more. You can keep Bob Dylan or Jim Morrison; for my money, no rock artist challenges the intellect like Sammy!

She don't like it when it's cut n' dry ~ mixed up euphoria ~ are the signals oscillating or maybe my reception is irrational ~ I actually believe songs on the radio ~ And don't like me makin' future plans ~ I don't know friendship any better than romance ~ coma, 10 years ~ weren't you smiling? ~ got my attention ~ you'll be free when you don't read record reviews that are poems ~ you scored Calliope! ~ And she don't want me tryin' to pin her down ~ I hear you, loud and red ~ She ain't about to give an inch of ground ~ was that a yes or a no to encouraging the boy bird?

A great buy for any Hagar fan. He could have made it a double disc set if he wanted to, as almost every review given here gives you at least one song that should have been on it.
Saw him in Saint Louis not too long ago and he rocked like he did the first time I saw him back in the 80's. Not bad for a 60 year old guy!!

I have had this sammy collection the longest, and it was good for the time. It does skip his early red rocker days after montrose, but it captures his 80's run just prior to and the solo album during Van Halen. These are my favorite songs of his, so its good for me, but Incomplete for his overall body of work. Now they do have the essential red collection out which get back to his Montrose days to present, but it still feels like it is to short to cover his entire work. I really like Three lock Box, which is not included on that collection. So, this one is cheap now on amazon, pick up the red collection and this, and you have a pretty good sammy collection between the two.

Sammy could possibly be the most uncreative rock lyricist to disgrace the genre.

His reliance on insipid love references and black and white analysis and subjects like "I Can't Drive 55" suggest he has never mentally left his teenage years.

His guitar-playing is workman-like at best.

Do not buy this or any other Hagar cd.

Sammy Hagar's second solo album is his first true rock album on his own, and it's white-hot. Heavily influenced by Ted Nugent and the Outlaws, this CD rocks hard and never quits until it ends. I've been a Sammy fan since the Montrose days. His solo material stands the test of the time and keeps getting better. Van Halen needed Sammy much more than he needed them. He saved their butts from oblivion.

I was born and raised in St. Louis. If you know anything about Sammy Hagar you know that St. Louis is his biggest market, second to none. So now you are going to get a proper review of this album from a TRUE FAN since (well I'm not going to tell my age).

This album is essential to any Sammy fan. In fact, to get a feel for Sammy's progression through his career, one should start with the self-titled Montrose album, than Montrose's Paper Money. You could skip over Nine On A Ten Scale (his solo debut and only weak album). Your third purchase should be this album. I still call them albums. You're lucky I didn't call it an 8-track.

Red is Sammy's signature song. I could never get tired of hearing this song.

Other highlights are Cruisin And Boozin' (CLASSIC!), Rock 'N' Roll Weekend (ESSENTIAL), Fillmore Shuffle (EXCELLENT!), The Pits, Love Has Found Me (EXCELLENT!) and Little Star/Eclipse.

After this album, buy each album in order of release and listen to it through, familiarize yourself thoroughly before buying the next. You too will know why Sammy is such an important part of rock music. Once your done with his catalog, book a ticket to see him in St. Louis. The place goes NUTS!

When you attend the concert, wear RED!

Finally, I think the music Sammy did with Van Halen is good, but everyone in St. Louis longed for the day he would return to a solo career. Dreams do come true.

I'm a classic AOR rock fan.Sammy Hagar is an old favorite,especially this album.It doesn't have the low end crunch I'm into these days, but I wore out the cassette, back in the day. So many of these 70's & 80's issues are out of print. Praise be to Amazon for reopening the vaults and digitally dusting off the semi-oldies.

In high school EVERYONE wanted a trans am. "sits 10" off the ground with a custom plate..." Kind of a silly song, but it will pump you up! Plain Jane is my favorite SH tune of all time. My buddies and I cranked this tune up until there was nothing but distortion on the way to school in my nova. Street Machine is not his best work, however if you listen to the words of "Never Say Die" you can capture some of the struggles we go through in early adulthood. So go and crank up T-R-A-N-S A-M and feel like a kid again.

This is what rock N roll is. Anyone needing a crash coarse in ROCKin and Rollin listen to this album by rock god Sammy hagar.

I owned this vinyl back in the day shortly after it was released. I loved it then. I purchased the CD a handful of years ago. I loved it then. I pulled it out this week, and guess what? I STILL love it. While I love all of Sammy's solo stuff, the classic stuff still gives me goose bumps. I don't know if it is the memories of my youth, and the hours of air guitar fun I had, or just the pure adrenalin, party fun rock and roll that he always captures. His early stuff is so amazing, and yet so underrated. Don't get me wrong, I love Van Halen, but I pull out classic Sammy like this much faster and more frequently than I do the Van Hagar stuff. Life before (and after) VH is so much sweeter in so many ways.

STREET MACHINE is one of Sammy Hagar's best albums from the early part of his career, blending such influences as Ted Nugent and the Outlaws, with many great songs to boot. The highlight of this CD is the cautionary "This Planet's On Fire (Burn In Hell)", but that doesn't take away from the power of such songs as the slashing rocker "Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)" and the sensitive midtempo number "Plain Jane." This is a compilation of songs of the early sammy solo years, the real "red rocker" years. Included in this collection is his song "I've done everything for you", which rick springfield re-did on his album in 1981 and made a hit of...It's still sammy's song. I was not as familiar with his work from this time era since I grew to know him during his 80's run and with Van Halen, but this is a great album to have to complete his time post Montrose to pre-warner brothers days (albums like 3 lock box, Standing hampton, VOA Etc). Check it out, affordable, great for the sammy collection. Get this with Unboxed and the red collection, a 3 disc collection that almost completes sammy...pick up montrose's greatest hits, you have it covered.

This CD is a compilation of material of his early solo years, up to the "Street Machine" album, plus track 3 from a single first issued on album on "Rematch", plus track 8 from the 1992 14-track compilation "The Best Of".

This disc is like a re-issue of that 1992 album, but is missing 4 tracks, while track 1, "Red", is actually from his early self-titled album (and not "live" as stated on the CD, and not remixed as it appears under the other compilation).

Nothing from "Danger Zone", his last album for Capitol records, and nothing from his 1st solo effort, "Nine On A Ten Scale".

Overall, a fair compilation of his early solo work; track 8, a re-make of the oldie "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", which I dislike, seems completely out of place after the smokin' song "Trans Am".

I honestly don't recommend this to anyone because it's a little short: go for the alternative 14-track version of "The Best Of" instead, and/or the "Unboxed" CD, which covers the Geffen years

I love listening to Sammy Hagar. This CD is great since it has some of Sammy Hagar's best songs all in one for me to hear. I don't have to have all his CD's out to hear the songs I want to hear. It is worth the purchase.

She just can't stand Van Halen.

While not a *huge* Sammy Hagar fan, I do like his solo stuff. This album just never gets old. So many good songs. Not really a bad one on here in my opinion. Turn it up, rock out, and have fun.

This was Sammy's last solo effort before the Waboritas became his band in the 90's. He was already in Van Halen and had to fulfill a contractual obligation with Geffen when he recorded this. Personally I feel that this is some of his finer work. He rocks as always, but he gets deeper lyrically than in some of his previous efforts. I would classify this as good, hard-edged rock and roll with a touch of blues. It has a rough sort of 80's feel to it, but by no means could you confuse this style with 80's hair metal. Two of the songs on this CD were staples of his solo during subsequent Van Halen tours: "Eagles Fly" or "Give to Live." I also like "Back Into You" and "Hands and Knees." The production on the CD is excellent, and Eddie Van Halen contributes bass guitar. I first bought this on cassette when it came out in '87 and still enjoy it today. If you like Hagar or no-frills rock then I think you'll enjoy it too.

Sammy's Best Work Ever. I have loved this album for over a decade and recommend it to everyone who has multiple emotions and loves music.

COMMENTS: Hagar had all ready joined Van Halen when this album came out. Since Van Halen's "5150" (from 1986) grabbed so many headlines, I was actually surprised to see this solo Sammy album reach the light of day. Can you say contractual obligation (with Geffen)? No rest for the weary though... Hagar's been a songwriter since the early 70's with Montrose, so kicking out songs comes naturally to the red rocker. I think of solo Hagar material in two eras - the 1st era being the 70's and early/mid 80's; and the 2nd era being the late 80's and after. Hagar has some classics from era-1... "Standing Hampton" (1981), "Three Lock Box" (1983) and "VOA" (1984). This self titled 1987 release (also known to as "I Never Said Goodbye") is the first classic of the later Sammy era. While a very solid album, I still can't help but rank it behind the 3 early classics mentioned above from '81-84. The melodies are front and center here, and the lyrics a distant 2nd. Hagar is not so much into singing about fast cars, women, and rock & roll anymore as much as he now wants to sing about love, relationships and philosophy (and even his family on later albums)... not that there's anything wrong with that (I guess). Sammy is aging, and you can tell by his written words. The album has a few solid rockers - the opener "When The Hammer Falls", and the one rebellious tune "Boys Night Out". A few mid tempo songs - "What They Gonna Say Now", "Returning Home", a Cheap Trick wannabe - "Privacy", and two power ballads that garnered nationwide attention from the FM radio stations - "Give To Live" and "Eagles Fly"... both great tunes. A solid and polished album with many a good song... but not as hard and rocking as his earlier material. Essential - you bet (4.5 stars).

DANGER ZONE, Sammy Hagar's last studio album on Capitol, is a dry run for the style that he'd perfect a year later on his Geffen debut, STANDING HAMPTON. Adding pop influences to his Ted-Nugent-meets-the-Outlaws sound, he comes up with such great songs as "Bad Reputation", but can still turn out a hot rocker on "Love Or Money." There's other good stuff here, too, even if this album does seem slightly transitional in nature. Hagar's advocacies of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist and increased funding for law enforcement/community policing make DANGER ZONE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

This CD is a most awesome output from the Red Rocker. It demonstrates why a major band like Van Halen would not hesitate to add Sammy as a singer. It shows the versatility of Sammy's style, from hard rockin' tunes like "Love or Money" & "20th Century Man" to the classic sounds of "The Iceman" & "Danger Zone". A must for any Sammy collection!

Danger Zone, Sammy's 1980 release, was not only my introduction to Sammy Hagar, but remains my all time favorite.My favorite songs are In The Night ( Entering Thre Danger Zone ), Love Or Money and 20th Century Man.The Production Quality of In The Night... is incredible! Especially for 1980's standards.This song remains my all time favorite Hagar song. I also have enjoyed many single Hagar hit's since 1980 but for an album as a whole this is my favorite.I would also like to recommend his first two albums as a member of Van Halen.5150 and OU812. EXCELLENT! Enjoy.

"Danger Zone" is S. Hagar's 1980 release and in my opinion much underrated. The album has great moments, for example "In The Night" where S. Hagar's strenghts as songwriter and guitarist really showed themselves. "Love Or Money" and "20th Century Man" are straight rockers. "Run For Your Life" is for me the best ballad he has ever written. "Miles From Boredom" and "Bad Reputation" are very melodic guitar pop music. "The Iceman" is funny and has a very optmistic feeling. If you like S. Hagar then you'll love this album. If it's your first S. Hagar album, then start with his 1981 album "Standing Hampton".
