Skye Sweetnam

Skye Sweetnam's "Sound Soldier" is a really good album. Im glad I ordered it, even tho it wasnt released in the USA. I wish more people here knew about her!

I very much enjoyed Noise From the Basement, but as a debut CD there was definite room for improvement. When I found out Skye Sweetnam had followed up with a new release I had to find out what it was all about. It's about loud, brash, raw, and untamed, and I like it. I was pleased to discover that the sound is still the Skye I remember, even though the style has changed somewhat. With production by The Matrix, she's picked up a lot of the sound of Avril Lavigne without falling into the trap of being an Avril clone. It feels more like she grew into a high-octane, high-decibel, rough-edged kind of style that she was only hinting at in her first release, and now she's more at home with herself and her music.

The CD opens and closes with its defining tracks, "Music Is My Boyfriend" and "Babydoll Gone Wrong", which both backup her intense vocals with even more intense arrangement; I recommend watching the videos to get a feel for those since preview tracks are not available here. While "Make-Out Song", "My Favorite Tune", "Cartoon", and "Ultra" follow in this vein pretty well, there's enough variety on the CD that it doesn't get boring. "Human" is both more melodic and more electronic, with a sort of split-personality chorus that alternates between soft and hard. "Scary Love" is the only ballad on the disc. "Boyhunter" is also unique, somewhat rap in its style. "Ghosts" and "Into Action" both have a different feeling that's reminiscent of No Doubt; those two and "Kiss A Girl" are the most pop-oriented songs on the disc.

Will this new CD please everyone who loved the first one? That depends on what you liked it for. My favorite song off the original was "I Don't Really Like You"; most of this CD feels like a more mature followup on that. For those who preferred the more acid-bubblegum quality of young Skye, that may seem like it's missing here, but I can hear a playful streak coming out in more than a few songs (especially "Cartoon"). There may be more acid than bubblegum now, but Skye has grown up a bit, and I like the sound of the grown-up Skye even better.

Thiz album iz soooo good, its reallllly diffrent from the debut album and thiz iz an Improvement, its real good, dancey beat-ish still rockish. Its good its just good all togather. I really Sugesst the songs (My FaVess) Music Is my boyfriend, Human, Boy hunter, My Favorite Tune, CArtoon, Make Out song, Ultra and Girl like me. Those songs are amazing!!! Especially Human,Ultra and Makeout song those are really catchy. Its a real mix but not off like sad to mad too like all others its a perfect mix, i really suggest to get thiz. I like the cover too :)! and the inserts

I will say that this cd for the most part is different, BUT you crank this baby up and let the sound and the bass take over and you will find yourself singing along and wiggling in your seat. I love it especially "Human," "Boyhunter" (which I have coveted since the Sims pets came out), "Cartoon" oh yeah!, and "Baby Doll Gone Wrong." A slow very pretty song on the album is "Scary Love" to rival her "Smoke and Mirrors" from the "Noise in the Basement" album. Overall I give it 5 of 5! There is only one song on the entire album I skip over about half the time- the rest are can't-skip hits. Thanks Skye for bringing us this album.

This is a very good CD. Keeping in mind it is a bit different than her first one,but I am POSITIVE that if you're a Skye fan,you WILL love it.
The more I listen to it,the more I like it. It's good to have her back after such a long absence.
Trust me,get it now,you will be glad you did.

OK... No other album is as good as this album. I mean she ROCKS! I listen this album like everyday. In my opinion "HYPOCRITE" and "Fallen Trough" are the best songs in this album. Actually this album deserves more than just 5 stars but its all that i can give.

For a 14 year old girl, this album is stellar. The lyrics are really bad in some songs, but thats what makes this album work. She's like a mini Avril Lavigne, except she seems to have much more of a personality. The songs are catchy and full of punch.

Although Skye is 18 now and her new album 'Sound Soldiers' is already out, I would say, pick this album if you want to know what Skye Sweetnam is all about and not the new one. Because this is where it all started.

Apparently Canada is full of spunky teenage girls with kicky names and brash fashion sense, ready and waiting to trick out their diary entries with professional mixing and the ragged ring of loud guitars. They'll then take the tapes to our shared border, amassing there under spangled denim signal flags, and their ensuing invasion will lighten our dreary lives with catchy tales of skipping school and kissing cuties. Unlike her predecessors, Toronto's Skye Sweetnam isn't here to complain. She secures the complicated conch Fefe Dobson so briefly held with 13 songs about one thing, which is nicely summarized in the utterly inescapable hook to "Billy S." "Feel for once what it's like to rebel now," she says, and chases it with a 21st century twist on the Bard's phrasing: "To skip or not to skip/That is the question." Noise from the Basement doesn't dwell on weighty emotions, or prop its centerpiece up in entirely unrealistically sexy situations. It's not even down with being bratty, though that style's here like magic-marker doodles on the knees of Sweetnam's jeans. No. Instead of playing rebel, this one wants a widescreen teen movie rewrite of 21st century real life. She and her people (principally a producer/writer/performer fellow named James Robertson) have rewritten the adolescent experience as a feel-good personal power trip, and set it blatantly to a tingly power-chord soundtrack mixed by shop teacher to the stars Tom Lord-Alge. Amazingly, this makes Basement purer than most of these popternative releases, for it fakes neither its immaturity nor its intent to make the notion rock. "You and your friends are dense/You don't make any sense," "It's so frustrating/You're not the type that I should be dating" -- the lines are pulled straight from Sweetnam's text message box, cleaned up with Pro Tools and auto-tuning, and promptly matched to gargantuan sugar-rock guitars. Done, done, and done. Add an opportunistic, soundtrack-ready cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass," fill out Robertson and Sweetnam's songs with a few professionally crafted rockers in the theme of the album (opener "Number One" is gender-opposite, just-as-cocky Sum 41), and suddenly Amanda Bynes is signing on to star. And that's Noise from the Basement. It remixes every impulse and daydream from the eighth through the 12th grades; it's what youth would sound like if every teenager had a production team.

WOW!! This CD is great. I came across Skye Sweetnam's music pretty by much mistake, but decided to take a chance and see what her music was like. [...] I went out and bought this album. And what an album, I was dissappointed. It's heavier than your average pop-rock album, with Skye and producer James Robertson adding alot of gain to the the guitars. It more punk rock than pop-rock.

In my opinion, this album puts Avril Lavigne, Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Clarkson all to shame.

Skye and James Robertson have crafted a sound which is original and all it own (It may seem to some that the pop-rock genre all the same). But this album really has a mix of genres (pop, heavy metal, punk rock).

Some compare Skye to Avril Lavigne, but the only thing they have in common is that they're both Canadian. After as songwriting is concerned, ulike those before her (Avril Lavigne; Hilary Duff; Kelly Clarkson), Skye Sweetnam isn't afraid to turn it up and really rock out. Those critics who say "She's ok, but nothing special" are wrong cause Noise from the Basement is VERY special album indeed!!

2. Billy S. 10/10. One of my favourite songs, cause it says get out of
school, what teenager can't relate to that.

3. Tangled Up In Me. 8/10. Very catchy song

4. I Don't Really Like You. 10/10. Another of my favourite on the album, it's kind of a heavy metal/hard rock cross-over song. I love the guitar riff at the chorus.

5. I Don't Care. 8/10. I like this song, the lyrics are great and the guitar is really catchy.

6. Heart of Glass. 10/10. A great cover, I think Skye's take on this Blondie song is far better than the original (no offense, I like the original version as well).

7. Sharada 10/10. Catchy guitar riff, great melody. What else can I say, everything this song rocks!!

8. It Sucks. 9/10. It's a short song. Great lyrics, catchy guitar riff.

9. Fallen Through. 10/10. I really like this song. It's a great ballad, with a great melody, and lyrics. The guitar is very melodic.

10. Hypocrite. 10/10. My FAVOURITE songs. It a very fast, up-beat song with great lyrics, great guitar riff. The "Hey!! Hey!!" chant in this song reminds of Metallica's song, Creeping Death. I love everything about this song.

10. Unpredictable. 10/10. I love how she sing it, and I can totally relate to the lyrics.

11. Shot to Pieces. 10/10. I love this song. It's fast, up-beat song, with a catchy guitar riff.

12. Smoke + Mirrors. 10/10. A great ballad, with a great meaning.

13. Split Personality. 10/10. I love this song, it's probably the heaviest song on the whole album, apart from Hypocite and Shot to Pieces. It starts off like music from a horror movie, then ROCKS out!! It a kinda like Nine Inch Nails/Marlyn Manson song, but it's very punk.

Some music critics have called Skye Sweetnam is another manufactured product of the music industry, who is just a rip-off of Avril Lavigne, it's ironic 'cause Skye Sweetnam is everything that Arista Record believed -wanted- Avril Lavigne to be (maybe that why some critics compare Skye and Avril). After having listened to both of Avril's album and Skye's debut, they don't really sound alike. The fact that they're both Canadian are where the similarities end.

Skye really stands out from those pop-rock artists who came before her because Skye has a different sound, which is very rock orientant. She'll definitely give Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson and others like them a run for their money. And with Avril Lavigne working on a new album, and giving acting a shot at the moment. Also with Hilary Duff and Kelly Clarkson maintaining a somewhat low profile, I think Skye Sweetnam has pretty much stolen the spotlight from all 3 of the artist which I've mentioned. Capitol Records have definitely found someone, in Skye Sweetnam, who has surpassed both Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson.

Overall, this is a very impressive debut album. But if you're open minded when it comes to music. And looking for something a little different. Skye Sweetnam definitely has talent. I can't wait for her 2nd album, it'll surely give Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson a run for their money, much like her debut album has.

I love this CD. It's my favorite of all my CDs. I have a lot of CDs, too! I would reccomend this if you like Avril Lavigne!

One word; AMAZING!!! Some soft songs, and some good, rock (or whatever you want to call it) songs too. Plus covers of Heart of Glass (Blondie) and Wild World...both songs being well done. I love that voice!!! You go, Skye!

I am just back from a live concert of Skye Sweetnam in Oberhausen, Germany, where she played as a support act of Britney Spears. I have never heard of her before this evening.
I am still excited about the energy and power of her (and her bands) performance. This was what I expect from a concert - pure live energy. I am interested to hear the CD to see if the live energy can be really transferred to CD. I definetely want to hear more from her!
By the way, the performance had more power than Britneys performance (which was o.k. but not authentic). It often remembered me to an Avril Livigne show - or what would I expect from that show.

If you're new to the music of Skye Sweetnam, I strongly advise you to not buy this single. "Tangled Up In Me" is a good song but it's far from being the best cut on her full-lenght album Noise From the Basement. Also, the 2 non-released tracks here, "Too Late" and "Tidal Wave," are substandard, dull and do NOT represent Skye's talent. Only get this single if you already have Noise From the Basement and must own every song that Skye has put out.

Don't judge Skye by this single. She's capable of a LOT more.

Skye seems like she has a good voice, but she chooses childish songs. I like her song Tangled up in me. I think it's cute. But some songs she trys to be too cute. I give her 3 stars becuase she has a very good voice, but she needs to put it to use a little better. If Skye was to magically read this, I'd tell her that she should do a duet with a very popular artist, then maybe she would see what she has and how to put it to good use.I LOVE tangled up in me and her Christmas songs. So Skye you are almost there!!

I listened to clips of songs from this CD, and I think Skye is an okay singer, but not so good that she should have a recording contract. I haven't heard enough of "Tangled Up In Me" to know exactly how much I like it, but I know "Too Late" and "Tidal Wave" are annoying. I think Skye Sweetnam is going to go out unless her new album "Noise From the Basement" is a hit, and actually has good songs on it.

I bought this single after hearing the song "Tangled Up In Me". I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised.

Too Late and Tidal Wave were never previously released and won't be included in Skye's debut album, "Noise from the Basement", coming out September 21.

My favorite songs were Tangled Up in Me and Too Late, they are extremely catchy. Tidal Wave was okay, but not the best song.
Overall, I think Skye Sweetnam is a very talented singer and I really look forward to her upcoming album!

Ok so just for the record I'm a 23 year-old who listens to everything from black metal to shoegaze to math-rock to idm, along with a healthy amount of mainstream pop-rock, and I think this song is some of the best music you're likely to hear in that last field.
I don't know how seriously the lyrics are meant to be taken, but they're just harmless dumb fun as far as I'm concerned, and musically it's a really well composed piece of pop-rock goodness. The attention to detail in the multiple layered guitar and vocal parts is masterful, and the verse/chorus dynamic has such a kick to it. It's just a really cool song.

Please believe me when I say... THIS IS THE WORST SONG OF ALL TIME!!! I have NEVER heard a song more deserving of this title! Not even anything by Britney, Christina, Jessica, or any other corporate pop hacks can compare to this complete and utter atrocity! It's one of the most blatant attempts at fad-hopping (in this case, the preteen girl poseur-punk fad pioneered by Avril Lavigne) to ever see the light of day. Not only this, it's so riciculous and poorly written that you might find it hard to believe Ms. Sweetnam herself wrote it (and she apparently writes all her lyrics). Skye Sweetnam's debut album will be released soon, and it doesn't take a genius to see that she will not be a success. This is music for 5 year olds that sounds like it might as well be written by a 5 year old. It's just so bad that it crosses over into self-parody. Avoid it!!!

Calling Shakespeare "Billy" is freakin' ANNOYING. It's out-and-out stupid. Beyond stupid.

I agree with the earlier poster that the true rebels are EXACTLY the ones who actually DO read Shakespeare -- to think about what REAL subversiveness and REAL rebellion is.

She sings the word "rebel" while having no idea what "rebellion" really is. Hint Hint -- it ain't something boring and stupid like skipping school.

I think this song is the best from Skye Sweetnam. The video is off the hook too. I got a chance to meet her when she came with Miss Britney Spears & Kelis. She was super nice and her album comes out August 10. If you liked this song you will like all the other ones.

I remember hearing this song a few months ago, and it was so bad that it actually left an impression on me. This basically adds more proverbial wood to the fire for my argument on why anyone under a certain age (maybe 18 or 21?) should not be signed to a recording contract.

Anyone who's heard the song knows what I'm talking about, but for those who don't, Skye Sweetnam is Capitol Records' attempt to cash in on the teenage girl pseudo-punk craze ignited by the abysmal Avril Lavigne. Besides the tired sound of the song, you've got the same lunkheaded, childish lyrics ("Daddy, daddy, no! / I don't wanna go to school" ... "Get out, get out, get out, get out wooooo!") that her peers are known for. In case you haven't figured it out yet (since those lyrics are REALLY cryptic - cough cough), "Billy S." is a song where the central character makes the daunting choice of whether or not to skip school or not. What makes it worse is that Sweetnam has even less of a range than Lavigne, who's certainly nothing to write home about herself. Nevermind the fact that she totally butchers the good name of the Bard in this song - obviously that wasn't enough.

In summary: An unimpressive song by a lackluster recording artist, this song does not bode well for Sweetnam's career. If this is the best she has to offer, I shudder at the thought of potentially hearing her worst.
