The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

This is a classic recording, and for the price I don`t think you will any better deal anywhere else. It was also delivered within several days and was in excellent condition.

This is a great recording, a definite must-have for the library of any fan of bluegrass music. The fidelity is very good.

I really enjoy how The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is able to mix Classic Country with Bluegrass and constantly come up with hit after hit after hit. If you're a fan of them then I don't have to tell. If you're not, and enjoy this type of music you will appreciate this double CD. Some of my favorite songs include: Tennessee Stud & Pins And Needles (In My Heart). This is what music sounds like!

I bought these c.d.'s when they were released, but my daughter is always borrowing it from me, so I finally bought this one, new, to put away for her birthday. I love the casual talk between the artists between songs, and every song is great.I would have loved to have sat in on these recordings.Really Great c.d for "pure" old country.Jimmy Martin,Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs,Pete "Oswald" Kirby and his beautiful dobro,Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Mother Maybelle, just to name a few who recorded these c.d's.D.Partridge

Since the band's beginnings in 1965, the members of The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have continued to incorporate many elements of American music into their sound. Folk, jugband, country, bluegrass, blues, and pop are all part of the final blend. Group members all play a variety of instruments and have prided themselves in versatility.
This Curb release, "Nitty Gritty Band Greatest Hits", offers thirteen selected tracks from the group's early days through the first hits in the 1980's.
The 1960's are represented by the folk rock of their first single "Buy For Me The Rain".
There are three selections from the band's classic 1970 LP "Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy": The popular #9 hit single "Mr. Bojangles"; Michael Nesmith's "Some Of Shelly's Blues"; and Kenny Loggins' "House At Pooh Corner".
Included from "Will The Circle Be Unbroken"(another classic Dirt LP set)are tracks which were recorded with Grand Ole Opry members. The title tune features Mother Maybelle Carter. The banjo driven "Grand Ole Opry Song" does the same for Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff guests on "I Saw The Light".
Several favorites from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's concert set list are included:"Jambalaya" and "Battle Of New Orleans".
The late 70's recordings are represented by a cover of the Everly Brothers' classic "All I Have To Do Is Dream".
Finally, the collection is rounded out with the pop hits that brought the group into the 1980's. The sublime "American Dream (w/Linda Ronstadt)", a rocking "Fire In The Sky", and the soaring "Make A Little Magic(w/Nicolette Larson)" are all highlights.

I enjoyed listening to the hits from this band from many years ago when I was young. Thanks for the memories.

This CD does give you the essence of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. I would recommend it.

This cd of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band songs is great for a starter collection. Of notable interest on this cd is Mr. Bojangles, which is presented here in the shorter "B" side version of the song. The song was issued on both sides of the original 45, one with a minute and a half long prelude, then the song kicks in. When you flip the 45 over you get this version, which actually starts differently than the version on the A side 45.

For a very nice cheap budget price, this cd is a near definitive overview of their early hits, and I recommend this to anyone. Some of the other great songs on this cd are Buy For Me The Rain, House At Pooh Corner, and Will The Circle Be Unbroken.

If you want to dig a little deeper into the band's music, other cds that I recommend are "Dirt, Silver and Gold" for more songs from this era (which includes the original A side version of Mr. Bojangles), and also "20 Years of Dirt" for "Dance Little Jean".

Again, the B side version of Mr. Bojangles is on this cd, and it is in fact hard to find on cd. This cd has the basic early hits by the group, and is a must for anyone who likes Mr. Bojangles and wants to hear more of their hits.

This is my only album of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and it is great. I hadn't even heard of them until the 4th of July last year when they came to my town. I didn't get to see them play but I heard they were great so I bought one of their cd's and loved it. One song I wish was on here though is "Fishin' in the Dark." That is a great song. Great cd and worth the buy.

Even 20 years later this album stands as my all time favorite!!! almost every track I know by heart!! I have seen NGDB 5 times in concert-they do not dissapoint!!!

Years later, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band revisited this idea and once more went into the studio. They took with them some of the people from the first CD and added members of the next generation. Once again, they produced a landmark bluegrass CD of timeless music. The music, the people produce a feeling that pulls you in and plays with your feeling as good bluegrass will. Once you buy one, it is only a question of time until you want this one.

This is an eclectic mix of country/folk type music. I love hearing Johnny's voice, Earl's pickin'. (I wonder who's gonna fill their shoes?!) Knowing that there were young people present and participating in this musical tribute to the old sounds made me glad. The next generation not entirely caught up with the new country sound. When I played "Life's Railway to Heaven" at my Railroad engineer husband's funeral, there wasn't a dry eye in the place. I bought a copy of this CD for my 37 year old son, at his request. Another younger fan won over!

As a fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for more than 30 years, it is easy for me to pick "Will the Circle Be Unbroken Vol. 2" as the band's best effort, by far. In 1989 the album won the Grammy Award for "Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal" plus two other Grammys for individual cuts, and won the Country Music Association's "Album of the Year." Pretty much enough said. Highlights include Paulette Carlson's vocal on "Lovin On the Side," John Denver's vocal on "And So It Goes," the incomparable John Prine on "Grandpa Was a Carpenter," and fine work by NGDB members throughout. (If you want to hear the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in microcosm, listen to their version of Buddy Holly's "Rave On" on the "Uncle Charlie and his Dog Teddy" LP.)

I purchased this cd for my husband for Christmas. He loves bluegrass and loves this cd. He also has volume 1&2.

This is not the landmark CD of vol. I. It lacks the generational impact of that landmark event and seems to lack the good feelings of vol. II. These "short comings" mean that the third CD is the weakest of the family NOT that is a bad one. Coming in third, in a race with the first two CDs is not the same as being a poor CD. I like this one the least but listen to it often and always enjoy it. It shows me how bluegrass has grown and changed but still manages to keep the circle unbroken and remain true. This is the third generation working with the second generation and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. You can hear the changes in presentation and how the third generation differs from the first generation. Some of the songs do not work well and this detracts from the overall value. However, my clinkers differ from people I have talked to about this. This completes the series and you will want it.

I have the other two circle discs which are great, and this one hasn't disappointed one little bit. Buy it it's great

I have both Volume I & II so couldn't resist buying Volume III. The music was good, can't complain about good pickin' like that but I did notice that the original intent of the album is being re-thought it appears and it takes away from the entire concept for me.

Will The Circle Be Unbroken II was originally made to showcase the talents of the decendents and family of the original players/singers on Vol I. It was keeping the "circle" alive by bringing in fresh new sounds from new generations of musicians of those who played on volume I.

TOM PETTY?? Where does that come in to play? How does he fit in the circle? I was amazed that "this ones son" and "that ones son" were invited to play on this album, but the Huskey's (whom I loved for their bass playing) were totally ignored this go 'round.

Junior Huskey played Vol. I, Roy Huskey Jr. (Junior's son) played Vol. II. Why wasn't Roy's son John invited to play on Vol III? Isn't that the purpose of this album? To keep the circle alive? Roy Huskey Jr has 2 sons, one of which is a musician (not sure about the other one). Where was he? Given the tradition of the albums, I don't see how Tom Petty could possibly be invited over a 3rd generation family musician. I was very disappointed to find the Huskey's not on this album. They were the backbone of the first two.

Not just the Huskey's, but there are other noticeable's left out of this album as well. It's just a shame that such a great concept has gone down the tubes.

It seems to me, that in favor of the elite, the circle has most definitely been broken which really takes away from what the album was intended for.

Bluegrass and 70's Country Rock intersect perfectly on "Dirt, Sliver and Gold," a compilation of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's earliest greatest hits and favorite tracks. These guys can play music together and sound like they're having fun doing it. I love how the Uncle Charlie Interview leads into "Mr. Bojangles." Earl Scrugg's "Randy Lynn Rag" never sounded better. "Sixteen Tracks," "Jamiaca Lady," and "Bowlegs" don't seem to get mentioned in reviews but they are great tunes. "Ripplin' Waters," my personal favorite, evokes the Colorado high country and a slower pace of life. And nobody does "Battle of New Orleans" like the NGDB. This is the Dirt Band at their finest.

The variety of music on the CD was great. We were a little concerned about the quality as there seemed to be a residue on the CD right out of the package and it hung up on the second song. However, once we cleaned the CD, it played without a problem. We heard many songs that were new to us. Much more instrumental tunes than we were expecting.

This is NOT a review of the music. We all know this band was great and they created memorable songs. What prevents this Cd to reach perfection is the lousy booklet included. No song lyrics, scarce info about the band. A fairly good product altogether, but no pluses.

I had this 3 record album back in college in the early 80's. This was one of the standards for our dorm parties. I lost the third record. I have been searching for the CD for years. I love Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's music and this one is classic.

Awesome album and a must for anyone into the bluegrass/country genre but likes a little rock and creative orchestration thrown in. Great covers and signs of better times--who would dare cover "House at Pooh Corner" these days? Tons of great music in this double album. Put it on, kick back and you'll be hummin' and singin' along before you know it.

Simply put, this recording belongs on that small shelf for
records that you will never part with.....I have often asked
people " Is there anything out there in the same vein ". and
they can not think of one recording. 20 tracks.....If you can't
hear this, then ask someone to put another shovel of dirt on you.

I bought this album back in 1973 and it has remained a favorite. There isn't a weak spot in this collection. Mr. Bojangles by Jerry Jeff Walker is performed beautifully and touches the emotions. Some of Shelley's Blues and House at Pooh Corner received lots of radio play back in the 70's due to their catchy tunes and great instrumentation. My favorite tune is the gorgeous Randy Newman ballad "Livin' Without You." (I do not understand how this beautiful song never became a hit). The collection offers diverse country/rock selections that have a sound of their own. I have to believe that anyone who purchases this album and gives it a chance will feel the same as I do - - that this is unique, heartfelt, superb and flawless.

I had this on 8-track many years ago. It was great to hear it again.

Great album, great songs, great mix - I liked their music better when they were in California - Nashville made them too country.

I bought this album originally back in the 70's and still have it. What a wonderful and delightful listening pleasure it is. I would buy it again and probably will eventually by the DVD.

Excellent cd. For fans of the Dirt Band, I think this is a "must have" cd.

This is one of the best, overlooked, albums by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Well recorded live songs, interview with Vassar Clements & band members, and more.

A "must have" for NGDB fans, and anyone who liked their pre "American Dream" music.

I loved the NGDB back in their "jug band/bluegrass/eclectic rock" days (before they went mainstream and began sucking with a vengeance), and this is an album I've always mostly enjoyed a lot.
The music is great... kickin' versions of classics like "Mr. Bojangles", "Buy for me the Rain", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Battle of New Orleans", "Jambalaya". Funny songs like "GloCoat Blues", "The Fish Song", "Cosmic Cowboy". Fabulous fiddling from Mr. Vassar Clements throughout, and excellent bluegrass instrumentals.
The "interviews" are less successful, but are still interesting, for the most part.
Now we come to the two cuts that both make and break this album...
"The Mountain Whippoorwill"... Oh man, the rest of this album could even have been "(c)rap" and I'd have given it 5 stars just for this cut! A brilliant interpretation by John McEuen. With his muted delivery and old-timey banjo accompaniment, he makes this wonderful poem by Stephen Vincent Benet (one of my top 5 all-time favorite poems) really come to life. An amazing, spellbinding piece of live music. Unfortunately, it's more than counterbalanced by:
"It Came from the 50's (Blast from the Past)". One of the most misbegotten attempts at "humour" I've ever heard. So adolescent and unfunny that it transcends stupidity and just becomes pathetic and sad. Sure, 14-year olds might have sniggered at this during the early '70's (I didn't- I thought it was embarassing even back then... when I WAS 14!), but that doesn't make it funny. Almost unlistenable, I hate this cut so much that the album overall loses 1 star.
Other than that, I highly recommend this one, along with "Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy" as THE two quintessential NGDB recordings.

When I was a young 'un, I'd go to the cut-out bins at the local discount and record stores and blow most of what spending money I had trying out interesting looking albums. In this way, I was introduced to a lot of great music that I otherwise might have missed.

This was one of those albums. I was not a big country fan in 1976 when I ran across this LP in the bargain bin. I had "Mr. Bojangles" on 45. I'd heard "House On Pooh Corner" For a buck or so, I took a flyer on "Stars and Stripes Forever." If bang for the buck was my only criteria for defining the success of a purchase, this is like buying Microsoft as a startup. Through this album, I was introduced to bluegrass and a whole musical spectrum of country artists that I'd never heard and that give me so much pleasure today.

This is not "country" as you'd define it today. The Dirt Band, along with The Outlaws and the Ozark Mountain Daredevils were just the bridge a young rocker like me needed to expand my horizons. These guys were long haired, hippie types like me! And the music was beyond cool...

"Stars and Stripes Forever" is not the perfect NGDB album, but it is my personal favorite. I'll always be grateful I found this album in that bargain bin at Zayre's department store 30-odd years ago. I still have the LP with the clipped corner; it is one of the few pieces of vinyl I haven't disposed of over the years as I've replaced them with digital recordings.

By all means, buy "Uncle Charlie;" that IS the perfect NGDB album. For $6 bucks, you shouldn't miss this.

This is the follow up compilation to the 20 Years of Dirt album. It features the bands "country" hits that were released in 1987 and 1988, two older hits that were left off the first compilation and two non-hits. It fills in some of the holes, but not all of them, by any means.

I've always enjoyed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. They play some great music with nice harmonies and mandolins...yes, mandolins. I'm a sucker for that instrument. This particular greatest hits offering includes some of their biggest hits from the 80's. Just about everybody knows "Fishin' In The Dark," which, in my opinion, is one of the best country songs every placed on vinyl, or a cassette, or a disc. "I've Been Lookin'" and "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" are also here. Those three songs alone are worth the price of this disc.

Other highlights include "Face On The Cutting Room Floor," "Oh What A Love," and "Down That Road Tonight."

In summary, if you're interested in groups like Shenandoah, Restless Heart, and the Eagles, you'll probably enjoy these guys. They are more country than Restless Heart and the Eagles, but they don't have that forced "twang" that lingers on some of Shenandoah's songs.

A definite buy.

More Great Dirt is the follow-up to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's previous "best of" collection, Twenty Years Of Dirt. This record, like Twenty Years Of Dirt, consists mainly of hit songs from the '80s, the period when NGDB made a transition from being a progressive country-rock band to a mainstream country act. Like Twenty Years Of Dirt, More Great Dirt is a solid collection of the Dirt Band's hit songs. Indeed, in my opinion, this record tops Twenty Years Of Dirt despite its lack of a "classic" NGDB hit song(for instance, "Mr. Bojangles" and "Long Hard Road"). Even if hardly anybody listens to these songs a long time from now, I think the songs the Dirt Band chose to put on More Great Dirt are among their best. This record may have gotten overlooked by some listeners because NGDB released it in '89, the same year they came out with their platinum-selling Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Volume 2. After listening to More Great Dirt, however, I don't think you should pass it up. By itself, it's a great record.

Like other Dirt Band records I have, this one has a lot of highlights. It starts out with NGDB's version of "Cadillac Ranch", the classic Bruce Springsteen song, with lead vocals by Jeff Hanna and Jimmy Ibbotson. There are also Ibbotson's joyful ballad "Oh What A Love"; the upbeat summer song "Fishin' In The Dark", which topped the country charts in '87; Hanna and Ibbotson's toe-tapping song "I've Been Lookin'"; "Workin' Man(Nowhere To Go)", charter NGDB member Jimmie Fadden's song about the tribulations of the displaced farmer; and the rocking songs "Baby's Got A Hold On Me" and "Down That Road Tonight". Finally, the Dirt Band, as they did on Twenty Years Of Dirt, included their best songs from the early '80s. Besides "Cadillac Ranch", NGDB's early '80s hits which are on here include "Home Again In My Heart", "I Love Only You", and "Face On The Cutting Room Floor". There are no Bob Carpenter lead vocals here(unlike "Stand A Little Rain" on Twenty Years Of Dirt), but Carpenter's solid piano and accordion work are obvious on most of the songs.

On More Great Dirt, NGDB not only matched Twenty Years Of Dirt, but they did even better. My only criticism of this record--and my gripe is a minor one--is that, like a previous reviewer, I don't think it's long enough. Ten songs don't completely capture NGDB's musical ability, and I think some of my fellow Dirt Band fans will complain that even after a couple of "best of" collections, there are still some NGDB hit songs that haven't made it onto a "best of" album. Still, I don't see how anybody wouldn't like this record. There are no obvious attempts by the Dirt Band to appeal to their "pop" fans(which is what I think "Fire In The Sky" was on Twenty Years Of Dirt). Instead, what you'll get when you listen to More Great Dirt is a great collection of hit country songs by a group who makes high-quality music even if their songs don't always end up on the charts. Don't miss this one--I think you'll be impressed.

For Most of the Eighties (and the Nineties, too, for that matter), the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band decided they were not a jug band/roots rock/bluegrass/country-rock band. Instead, they were a country band. And by and large, country music was all the better for it. Granted, the NGDB's albums beginning with American Dream in 1979 would be of mixed quality (even though I dutifully bought them all).

So what you get here on Vol. II are the highlights of those albums. Gems like Bruce Springsteen's "Cadillac Ranch," the joyous "Fishin' in the Dark," the rousing "Baby's Got a Hold on Me" and the melancholy "Face on the Cutting Room Floor." Other highlights are original songs like Jimmy Ibbotson and Jeff Hanna's "I've Been Lookin'," Ibbotson's "Oh What a Love" and Jimmie Fadden's "Workin' Man (Nowhere to Go)." The songs feature impeccable playing, tight harmonies and just enough mandolin, steel guitar and banjo to lend an authenticity lacking in much of Nashville's cookie-cutter approach to country music.

If there's any criticism of this disc, it's that it's too short. It's like eating a bag of chips. Each one is so good, you're disappointed when you get to the end. In the CD Age there's no excuse for a 10-track, 34-minute CD, especially when you're talking about a disc that purports to be "The Best of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band." RECOMMENDED

This is a great CD! I was only 4 years old when it came out but I totally love it! Even if you arent the biggest country music fan, you will like this! Fishin in the Dark and Working Man and Cadillac Ranch are the absolute best songs, but the rest are great too! You should really get this cd, its worth the money!

I bought this item as a gift for a friend that lost her copy of it in a fire. She played it through while I was visiting and my opinion is that it is a very good representation of NGDB. It captures the style of the band quite well. Overall, it is a great album showcasing a very talented group of musicians.

The best part was the album was advertised as being in very good condition which was an understatement. It actually looked like it had just been opened for the first time and never played before! My friend was very happy with it.

I like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and this is a great CD. My CD case was stolen and this was a 'must replace'.

The only complaint I have is that for a 20 year album there should have been more songs. The music industry is stuck on 11 or 12 songs for a record, tape or CD. It's rare that you see any more than that. This band has been around for a long time and has had some really great music, spanning several music genre. The band deserved better than this limited release. But it's still great music.

As a life long Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Fan and also having had the chance to meet and interview Dirt Band founding member John McEuen several years ago it makes my pirchase that much more special

While this is supposedly a 20 year career retrospective of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, it only includes two songs from the band's first ten years. The first four songs cover the bands "pop" hits (although "Ripplin' Waters wasn't a hit), while the remainder of the album features their "country" hits. While the bands early years definitely get the short shrift here, most of the songs are good. It's a decent compilation that will be a disappointment to fans of the bands early stuff.

For all of the complaints about this disc(lack of early tunes, too country, too brief), folks seem to forget that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been around for a long time. Trying to pick the top hits from a band that has been consistently putting out great music is like trying to pick the best child in your family. It's impossible. Someone will get hurt because "their" song isn't included. Another person will cry because certain time periods or albums are focused on too much.

Anyway, take this album for what it is. It's a nice package of well known hits by a band that deserves the respect given to the top groups in country music. It doesn't include all of their greatest hits, but it has some great ones on it. Also, the price is great for such good songs.

Recommended to folks interested in learning more about NGDB who might have only heard songs like "Fishin' In The Dark" on the radio. It's not included here(but it is on their second greatest hits), but you will find "Mr. Bojangles," "Fire In The Sky," "Stand A Little Rain" and the brilliant "Dance Little Jean" and "High Horse."

If you think that too much of the album was focused on their hits of the eighties, buy their older stuff. If you find this album to be too country, go back to listening to Faith Hill and Mr. Faith Hill, I'm sure they're right up your alley. Leave the real country artists for the rest of us.

In 1972, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released the landmark triple LP Will the Circle Be Unbroken. The young, shaggy haired band (best known, at the time, for their cover of "Mr. Bojangles") traveled from California to Nashville to create what they hoped would be a meshwork between two generations of musicians ensconced in the tradition of country and bluegrass music. What unfolded surpassed anyones wildest expectations.

The band was able to secure studio time with the giants of the genre, including: Roy Acuff, Earl Scruggs, Merle Travis, Doc Watson, and Maybelle Carter. In total, there are an incredible thirty-seven songs (thirty-eight if you count the dialogue track) - nearly all of which is indispensible material. In the years to come, the band released two subsequent volumes in the same grand tradition, sometimes even featuring younger artists such as Alison Krauss and Vince Gill. Although none quite reached the artistic heights achieved on the first volume, there are still outstanding highlights to be found on both.

In 2003, roughly a year after the release of the third volume, this complete trilogy set was released in a compact boxed set. It assembled the remastered version of the first volume (including four bonus tracks, though only one is a complete song), both successive volumes, and a DVD - comprising six discs in total. Two booklets are also included: one details the song credits and performers for each track, and the other contains an interesting essay concerning the formation of the entire project.

The DVD is perhaps the best reason to purchase this set, even if you own one or two of the albums already. It contains an outstanding hour-long concert, a brief documentary about the band, a music video for the track "The Lowlands", and three bonus concert performances not included in the final version.

One of the highlights of the concert is the performance of "Catfish John" featuring Alison Krauss. Others include a spirited rendition of the mad-cap instrumental "Earl's Breakdown" and a very fun, nostalgic performance of "Fishin' Blues" featuring Taj Mahal.

Just got the box set...what's the trick to remove the cd(s) from the plastic case...without using alot of force to pry the cd out? Several friends also found it difficult! I know the music is GREAT!

You won't hear much on these CD's that sounds like the Dirt Band as we knew them in the 70's. The real worth of this collection lies in the preservation of grass roots country tunes, lyrics and voices over a span of three decades. Remarkable and admirable!
The inclusion of live conversation is a nice, personal touch, but unfortunately the volume is a bit lower on those segments and it's sometimes necessary to adjust volume up and down as needed to hear.
The collection is referred to as 'deep Americana' and is a mix of country, gospel, bluegrass and folk. Many artists appear, but particular honor seems to be given to Mother Maybelle Carter. Nice touch! A real collectible.

The item turned out to be on sale,so I got it for much less expensive than I would have. It was a replacement, since I lost my original copy bought in 2004, and I treasure it for sentimental reasons besides loving the music, so I was very impressed with ordering it, and did so immediately after talking with your agent. He even credited my account $5.00 for my experience with Hastings, and said he took notes.

Ultimately Hastings did credit my return of their sending me the wrong product, I have to say, in a timely matter, so that helped.

I was unable to assess this product because the disks were faulty. I could not play Disk #6 on any CD palyer and the others would not play fully on my car player.
