The Subways

I've listened to clips from the first Subways album and wasn't impressed for a number of reasons; principally, because it seemed rushed and inconsistent. No offense intended, it just reminded me of a less-mature effort.

On the other hand, I've no such issue with the "All or Nothing" album. Five Stars out of Five Stars! The cohesiveness is evident in the abundant hooks, harmonies, rhythms, and lyrics. The musicianship in general, and guitar work in particular, are seamless and near-flawless! Standout tunes include Shake, Alright, Kalifornia, All or Nothing, Strawberry Blonde, and I Won't Let You Down.

This album rocks with a punk edge, and it's musical twists and turns are unexpected, pleasant surprises. I love the way these three people feed off each other's energies. And it's FUN to dance to! Well Done, kids!

Upon first listen, you might think the Subways are yet another American group with a obsession for British pop music and 90s alternative bands. Well you'd be wrong because they're from England.

This is the 2nd album from the British three-piece The Subways. They may remind you of bands like CKY, Paramore, The White Stripes, but they mostly play just good fun indie rock. The band is made up of Brothers Billy Lunn (Singer and guitar), Josh Morgan (Drummer) and Charlotte Cooper (Bassist and singer).

Considering all that The Subways have gone through in the build up to this album (discovery of Josh's autism, breakup of Billy and Charlotte, Billy getting surgery) it is a miracle that this album came out at all. But, like the stuntman (Spanky Spangler) on the album cover, the band have gone through flames and come out the other side and lived to tell the tale. What is more they have come out the other side smiling and they should be smiling. "All or Nothing" is a fantastic album, one that maintains and then builds upon the fantastic pop-song writing from their debut.

After overcoming a number of obstacles that could've put an end to the band and while, the band as a whole have made dramatic improvements all around, the most obvious progress has been made by bassist/vocalist Charlotte. Not only are her vocals featured more prominently but her bass lines are at times superb, and are much more audible as Butch Vig has helped to achieve a fantastic tone from her. Case in point, album opener "Girls & Boys" not only features Lunn and Cooper trading boy/girl vocals in the verse but also a superb bass line that is then repeated by the guitar.

The Subways were close to calling it quits a little over a year after the release of their debut album Young For Eternity. Vocalist Billy Lunn developed nodule, abnormal structures that effect the functioning of an organ, on his vocal cords and for a while it was feared that he would lose his voice. On top of that, Lunn and bassist Charlotte Cooper, who had been dating, went through a messy split. But Lunn overcame his vocal problem and he and Cooper worked through their differences. All of their physical and personal problems led to their second album getting the title All Or Nothing, as they questioned whether they would be able to maintain their popularity following their lengthy absence.

With legendary producer Butch Vig by their side, The Subways have gone all out on their new album and the results are somewhat spectacular.

I find something about The Subways to be really refreshing. Perhaps it's their humble background and the fact that they're a trio who have worked so hard to get to where they are and have done it entirely on their own, gaining something of a nice following along the way. They never changed their style to suit what's cool or popular at the time; they've always played the kind of music that they love to play and listen too.

There's been a ton of debate in regards to what kind of band The Subways are. Some label them punk, perhaps primarily because of their look and song lengths. Indie and garage rock are two other labels I've seen thrown at them though those are pretty unfounded. I do think that the band are something of a throwback and yes there are elements of punk, even garage and grunge but at the end of the day, they're simply a rock band and that's all this album is just fun rock music.

There's no technical masterpiece here. Lunn's vocals aren't that great, the drumming is frantic but all over the place and there's certainly nothing overly complicated about anything Lunn is doing with the guitar (although the album's opening riff is sweet) but all that aside, All Or Nothing is a tremendous fist-pumping album packed with high-octane choruses and anthem like verses.

Subject matter is varied on this album, unlike their previous effort where most tracks were written about Lunn's childhood. Here, Billy expresses his views on a range of subjects. The first three tracks center primarily on the state of society as he sees it, while others examine the break up between Lunn and Cooper and others are about Lunn's relationship with his new partner. The varied topics cover the past, present and future of The Subways and make for a pretty reflective album, and reinforces the "go for broke" attitude that was a big part of this album's creation.

"Shake! Shake!", definitely one of the best songs on the album, is a track about escaping that monotony of life, which was the reason Lunn created The Subways in the first place. The song is about letting go of pent up emotions and not caring about what's going on around you and want people think of you. The lyrics themselves are not overly complicated but they do a good job of getting the message across, which is a pattern throughout the album.

While the likes of "Shake! Shake!" and "Kalifornia" will get the pulse rating and head banging, The Subways seem to have finally mastered the more melodic approach to song writing. "Move To Newlyn" is a song of hope that starts off with some acoustic strumming and is driven by a subtle drumbeat. It picks up pace as it progresses but still has more of chilled out vibe. "Strawberry Blonde" is the closest thing this album has to a ballad, but the chorus prevents it from becoming clichéd and the sing-along line of sing a song for my lonely soul, makes it not just memorable, but one of the best tracks. "Lostboy", the album's closing number is similar but fails to leave that same lasting impression.

What I think helps make All Or Nothing so much stronger than the band's previous effort is the fact that Charlotte has much more vocal work to do on this one. Her voice shines through on many of the better songs ("Turnaround", "Shake! Shake!", "Move To Newlyn") and is a fantastic compliment to Lunn's gruff tones. Her voice is obviously much more soothing and comes more naturally but I think the pairing works together really well.

All Or Nothing delivers and it delivers big time. All the promise that the band showed on their debut could have gone to waste following all of their struggles but thankfully they got through them because this is a very good rock album that shows why so many people really like this band. What you see is what you get with them. They're just three people who love making music and they do it so well, presenting a collection of songs that are nice to listen to.

If I had to make one criticism it would be that Charlotte gets almost no solo singing time like on the first album and that's quite a shame because she has an absolutely fantastic voice and was a real stand out on the first album.

after having been blown away by the young for eternity I could not wait to hear Subways' new album. what a dissapointment! i just did not find a single track I would enjoy as much as I enjoyed the simple beuaty of Rock'n Roll Queen or, more so, With You, song I totally fell in love with. i don't know what are the reasons for that, it just did not live up to my expectations and it's a shame

I listened to so many of the new Brit groups lately. The Editors, The Cribs, Cinematics, The Clientelle. etc. I was surprised with what this group had in store. These guys are better than the previously mentioned artists. They sound like the Hoosiers but with a more edgy sound... like Panic at the Disco without the choral backdrop. From start to finish i was totally entertained with their "rousing, punkypop". They also have a pretty female bass player who sings! I highly recommend that you buy this album. You won't be disappointed.

This album is an incredible bit of rock! These guys (And girl) rock their hearts out! Are very fun and funny, and their music is just a blast! I hadn't thought I'd hear a new band play music like this ever again! Keep it up The Subways, I'm dieing to hear more. You have to come tour the states again!

On the Subways' Young for Eternity, the sound is not ground breaking and you could see them playing the Vans Warped Tour. They are your typical three-piece with drums, bass, and guitar that is power-pop influenced. Fortunately, the production is pretty good, the lyrics are understandable, and the instrumentation is good if not memorable. Their sound and influences seem to jump out all over the place, but regardless, it is entertaining. Because of this, not too much is overdone on this album, except for the over emphasizing explanation of their youth, as if they need to remind us of this in the album title and lyrics.

I Want To Hear What You Have Got To Say
This song is a great opener, it starts with soft acoustic guitar, before launching into a cool riff that will get you moving. The contrasting vocals of Billy and Charlotte really sound great.

Holiday
This song is a nice rockin' song to get you moving along, but it does sound slightly average, but it`s still a very good song with a nice guitar sound.

Rock & Roll Queen
This song is one of the simplest songs on the album, but it defiantly works and it will get stuck in your head for a while.

Mary
This song is a nice love song about bassist Mary-Charlotte Cooper. It has a very poppy feel to it, but it is a nice soft tune and good lyrics and the acoustic guitar work is very nicely done throughout.

Young For Eternity
This song is one of the heaviest tracks on the album, but it's lacks a great melody or chorus to be memorable. That's not to say it's a bad song it just feels out of place on the album.

Lines Of Light
This song is a short beautiful song with great lyrics. It starts softly before and builds into a slightly epic feeling finale.

Oh Yeah
This song is the song I heard them play when they were on the Tonight Show and it got me hooked on them. It's A cool poppy sounding song with a brilliant chorus, which demonstrates the amazing energy of the subways. The vocals are great but the real stand out on the track is the amazing voice work of Mary.

City Pavement
This song is a decent heavy sounding song, but part way through the vocals get a bit muddy and it takes away from Mary`s singing. This is the only song I didn't like so much because you can't hear Mary singing the chorus in parts of the song

No Goodbyes
This song is another excellent upbeat song with a nice acoustic guitar throughout and it has a very nice chorus.

With You
This song is just another rock song, with a cool build up and a great chorus that you'd forget about except for the chorus.

She Sun
This song as it starts the guitar playing will remind you of champagne supernova by Oasis then it changes to a decent yet beautiful soft song, with nice lyrics and a nice under lying piano running through.

Somewhere
This song takes a bit to get going and is a decent song and has a nice riff throughout. It also has a great finish.

At 1am
This song is a very cool punk style song. What keeps this song from just being a song that any band could play is that it features the great voice work of Mary.

The subways debut hints at great things to come. Though their songwriting is not brilliant yet, that will take time to develop. Young For Eternity has a brilliant energy to it and I feel their second album will surpass this one. My only real complaint about the album is that Mary doesn't get enough time to shine as her singing is some of the best I've heard from a group with a female singer in it. I feel that she could easily carry an album herself. I also feel that if they let Mary shine they could match the likes of bands like Paramore, Flyleaf and In This Moment and Evanescence.

So let's hope on their next album Mary really gets to shine. That's not to say Billy is a bad singer he's not, but Mary is the real stand out on the album.

The Subways have succeeded where many have failed: they've produced a record that lives up to their live performances. There's plenty of the energy that they exude on stage here and, for me, that's reason enough to pick it up. But there are plenty of other reasons to love this album, too: a big one being the fact that the band - a trio - are not lost in the recording. No gospel choir, string orchestra, didgeridoo ensemble or 100s of extra guitar tracks. Clean and simple, but still full and satisfying. Why don't more people make albums like this? I also like that I'm able to better appreciate the dual vocals recorded. Live, it was just fine, but I'm really able to hear how well they complement each other on this disc. The band have clearly learned (but not stolen) a lot from fellow Englishmen Oasis. "Mary" is a good example of this, but stops short of being a rip off or overly derivative. As a whole, Young For Eternity showcases the band's ability to craft really great rock 'n' roll: nicely structured, catchy, and dynamic. I can see this album appealing to a really broad range of music fans, so I definitely expect wide airplay when it arrives in stores. It's great stuff, a lot of fun, and totally worth the price of purchase or download.

The first song i hear was the first track. After hearing to the whole album i can definetly say that i enjoyed the whole album. I especially enjoyed the girls voice its very good

Ok I remember their song called This lil Game feat.702 and that song was the jam!!! But what in the world happenend to these guys they just up and vanished!!

I was 15 when this album came out and I fell in love with it from the jump. I know I've had at least 3 copies of it through the years from having to replace it because I carried the TAPE with me everywhere I went. Some of my best high school memories have the song "Fire" in the background. The whole album is great. It makes me sad to know that they fell off the way they did because they had the potential to do big things. Eleven years later I still love this album and even though I'm married with kids now "Fire" still does something to me.

I met these talented young men in 94, just before the album came out. They gave an amazing live preformace in their hotel, whilst recording in NY. I knew their ex manager a little and used to see them rehearsing at his house in Chicago. I have since lost contact with Chicago and the US, but always remember their fab live voices.

In an era when R&B music was predominantly ruled by vocal groups which feature dazzling leads but precious little harmony, Eric, Trerail, Roy and Keith prove that their strengths rest in a four-part alliance. A recent addition to Michael Bivins' Biv 10 Entertainment family back in 1995, Subway intended to take their listeners on a journey with the opening "Chi-Town Ride," which features guest vocalists Easy and Tung Twista and explores the Chicago scene's fusion of soul, rap and reggae. Producers Chad "Dr. Ceuss" Elliot and Herb Middleton contribute a couple of tracks ("The Better The Love" and "This Is Not A Goodbye") that are typical of the R. Kelly-influenced, bump-n-grind new wave of R&B. The swinging "Get Da Money" is Subway's link to the West Coast scene, and the Phat Pocket's Remix of that song wins the prize as the album's top jam. The tracks produced by soul survivor Gerald Levert ("This Lil' Game We Play" and "Goodtimes") bring about a change of pace, emphasizing Subway's raw vocal abilities and smoothe style. This flavorful combination of production expertise and raw talent provides GOOD TIMES with a continuous musical flow, and is the main reason why Subway's debut is such an unbridled success and it also features the love jam of the summer from 1995 which was Fire.

'Young for eternity' is the energetic garage/punk debut CD from UK trio The Subways. Amazing as they have a sound far more mature than their age suggests.

Add a sprinkling of The White Stripes here, and a dash of Ash there and you begin to get the picture of their sound.

Opening track 'I want to hear what you have got to say' is a catchy rocker, a great way to open the CD. Similar to this is the delightful 'Oh yeah'.

My favourite song has got to be the simple, yet catchy rocker 'Rock & roll queen'. Excellent.

Slowing things down are the eerie 'Lines of light', the amazing 'She sun', and the closing track 'Somewhere' with its sudden bursts of angry guitar. There is a lovely upbeat, melodic hidden track after 'Somewhere'.

I love the lead vocalists voice, which contrasts sharply (and it works) with the youthful vocals of the female.

A great debut!

The Subways provide basic rock that in some ways heralds back to earlier days of this musical genre's history. "Rock 'n' Roll Queen" is obviously the album's standout but the other tracks will not disappoint. I truly look forward to seeing them live.

Touted as the latest band to bring back punk rock's "three chords and the truth" ethical simplicity, the Subways (or their producer) have mistaken "simple" for "simplistic." Though the band is tight, the performances peppy and the production crisp, there's not really much going on here songwise. "With You" is a fine all-around song, and "She Sun" manages to power through and ultimately complement sparse lyrics. The other songs are rejumblings of the same hard rock fifths and open triads, set to forgettable words: "You are the sun/You are the only one/You are so cool/You are so rock and roll." Even Lindsay Lohan's pop throwaways cut deeper than this.

This is the best cd to just sing along to in your car. If you like the white strips and Franz Ferdinand you'll love this one. I definitely recommend purchasing it.

Let me start out by saying a few things. I have traditionally strayed away from anything that willing attached itself to shows such as, "The O.C." To be honest, I'm not even sure if the term, "The O.C." (read: The Orange County) makes any sense, but we aren't here to debate semantics or grammaticism. Although, I have to say that someone over at Fox knows their stuff; I groaned when The O.C. played Death Cab for Cutie but when they then also played Franz Ferdinand, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Hot Hot Heat, The Killers, Louis XIV, LCD Soundsystem, and The Subways I had to concede. Given the fact that I personally discovered this gem, The Subways, while my girlfriend (I swear she was watching it and not me) was watching this show, I have no problem giving credit where credit is deserved.

The Subways' album, "Young for Eternity" is the best CD, by a new artist, to traverse the channels between the U.K. and its fledgling son since Franz Ferdinand's or Kaiser Chiefs' debut albums. When you consider the bands combined age of barely-breaking-a-half-century, you'll realize, "The Subways" is a name you may have to get used to. With their age though comes an undeniable, and seemingly unavoidable, angst and lyrical immaturity. For a first release though, having your lack of lyrical experience called into question, isn't too harsh of a criticism.

The opening track, "I Want to Hear What You Have Got to Say" is misleading through the course of its opening lines. I found myself constantly questioning the genre and influences which produced this unique and enjoyable sound. I quickly found that this opening track serves as the "get used to this" factor for the rest of the album. The influences aren't hard to point out as long as you will allow yourself to choose a new one for each song. The album seems to run the gamut genre-wise from the Green Day influenced rifts of "Holiday", to the indie-folk influences of "Mary, to the most impressive, 80's metal influences of "Young for Eternity." The album in general is a quick and easy listen no matter what genre you are into but it has a built in bonus for those who traverse genres.

My main complaint with this album would of course be its length; I know it is an immortal sin to complain about a punk album being too short but this album jumped genres far too often to receive that blessing. To its own merit, the complaint about the length is only because I would have liked to hear more from what I found to be a very impressive import from across the Atlantic.

Bottom line: If you like garage-grunge songs, interspersed with power ballads and light jams, then this is one to definitely pick up. A great debut album from a band, I'm sure, we are to hear more from.

Bernie Rhodes shelved the original Subway Sect album, then it became lost forever. Luckly, about half of it came out on vinyl on "a retrospective" in the mid eighties. From what I recall, that half is close to (maybe the same as) what is released here, along with some later, post original group stuff which includes songs from the first Vic Godard and the Subway Sect LP like a John Peel session and 'Who's that Girl' from the second Vic Godard LP with the Black Arabs (remember the Great Rock and Roll Swindle). Unfortunately, the whole original LP can't be released, unless someone finds a unlikely extra copy of the master, but at least we have some of it, including songs from the 2 released singles, a Peel session and a 3 song bonus c. d..

tones, beats, keys, vocals, cords, all twisting, bending, and smashing into each other. it's like their all playing a second or two behind. one guy is going faster trying to catch up, the second is slowing down and the rest seem to do whatever they like. how they put it all together and make it sound so good is beyond me. from the very begining of 'Don't Split It' you want to wack the side of your stereo. by the end of the song your checking for cracks in the cd. but it sounds so f'n good! the songs just seem to come together at the right times and flow with a strong pop beat. 'Double Negative' is by far my favorite. the first time i heard this song i had no idea where it was going. i had some pretty good cold medicine at the time which made it even more interesting. i recomend both.

This cd is in effect a re-release of the Rough Trade's number 56 issue VG&TSS: A Retrospective 1977-81 from 1984, though this one tells a slightly different story. A must for all, it is as close as we can come to those days for Vic Godard and the Sect. It includes a limited ed. live cd with some 4 tracks, but Ambition, Different Story, Double Negative, and Stool Pigeon will keep you busy. Find if you can "Stand Back" and the originals and then await the discovery of Yeah, Yeah, Noh. Sublime Sect is all thanks to Hugo Lane. Godard is a happy postman in So. London and plays to this day locally. See "End of the Surrey People". Enjoy.

Subway to Sally is part of a musical trend in Europe known as "Mittelalter rock" which translates as medieval rock. This style combines medieval song strutures and heavy metal. Good stuff. I own several Subway to Sally cds which are definately greatly influenced by old music. This cd is probably their least medieval sounding of all the discs of theirs that I have. It is, nevertheless good metal a bit in the directio of Rammstein. Here and there there are some bits of bagpipe and other more traditional insrumentation but on the whole this is mostly modern metal. The songs deal with interesting subjects if you speak German which is also typical of the bands' other work. If you are already a fan, get this, if not, try Nakt which is their most traditional medieval album or for a mix of trad and metal try Hochzeit, Bannkreis, or Foppt den Daemon.

This song is a very cool punk style song. What keeps this song from just being a song that any band could play is that it features the great voice work of Mary.

The subways debut hints at great things to come. Though their songwriting is not brilliant yet, that will take time to develop. Young For Eternity has a brilliant energy to it and I feel their second album will surpass this one. My only real complaint about the album is that Mary doesn't get enough time to shine as her singing is some of the best I've heard from a group with a female singer in it. I feel that she could easily carry an album herself. I also feel that if they let Mary shine they could match the likes of bands like Paramore, Flyleaf and In This Moment and Evanescence.

So let's hope on their next album Mary really gets to shine. That's not to say Billy is a bad singer he's not, but Mary is the real stand out on the album.

The Subways have succeeded where many have failed: they've produced a record that lives up to their live performances. There's plenty of the energy that they exude on stage here and, for me, that's reason enough to pick it up. But there are plenty of other reasons to love this album, too: a big one being the fact that the band - a trio - are not lost in the recording. No gospel choir, string orchestra, didgeridoo ensemble or 100s of extra guitar tracks. Clean and simple, but still full and satisfying. Why don't more people make albums like this? I also like that I'm able to better appreciate the dual vocals recorded. Live, it was just fine, but I'm really able to hear how well they complement each other on this disc. The band have clearly learned (but not stolen) a lot from fellow Englishmen Oasis. "Mary" is a good example of this, but stops short of being a rip off or overly derivative. As a whole, Young For Eternity showcases the band's ability to craft really great rock 'n' roll: nicely structured, catchy, and dynamic. I can see this album appealing to a really broad range of music fans, so I definitely expect wide airplay when it arrives in stores. It's great stuff, a lot of fun, and totally worth the price of purchase or download.
