My first contact with Vicente Amigo's music was several years ago, at a friend's house who happened to live in Sevilla at that time. I didn't really appreciate the music playing. To give you an idea of what happened, as soon as the record was over, I took it out to play a Najee cd.... Yes, you can throw rotten tomatoes and eggs at me if you want, I deserve them.

Back to the present. I have new feelings for music. I am probably more open and sensitive, more interested in mediterranean flavoured music (thus my interest for Buddha bar and chillout in Paris or Nirvana Lounge compilations), I am away from my country, Spain. And, of course, you generally miss things when you don't have them. This cd brings lots of emotions to me when I listen to it. It is a powerful performance by a man that I consider to be the Master in his genre. Each time I put this record on, it shakes me, gives me goose bumps at times. Especially the closing track, "Ciudad de las ideas". I was with a group of 40 kids (that's the way I have to call them) from the US on a trip to Spain in 2002, and I took them to Sevilla and Granada. I hadn't been there in years and now, I just can't help connecting Amigo's music with all that happened over there. You might think I am in delirium, but I just don't know how to express this. There is a depth in this music that you will only fully understand and feel if you go there and get submerged into the culture and way of life. Try for instance "La carboneria" in Sevilla, or the "Sacromonte" in Granada (situated on the hill that faces the hill on which the Alhambra is). Try Cordoba.

Once you have done that, and that you have looked a the landscape from the walls of the Alhambra, you have to come back to this record (track number 3 is in fact called "ojos de la Alhambra"). I guarantee you will love it.

Now, even if you are not a connaisseur, you can enjoy the cd. That's what makes it so strong and powerful. It is pleasant, and not unbearingly long. It has musical cuts, but also voices. The closing track is a great one because of it's genuinity, voices and music. The opening track is light and joyous, and it was played as an ad for Spain's largest store. Everybody in Spain knows it now. In between, you have nothing but great music. Featured on track 2 you have Flamenco's new star, Dieguito "el cigala" and Khaled on track 3.

I went to Vicente's concert here in Atlanta in November 2002. An astonishing performance. I talked to him after the show. He is not a look-at-me-but-don't-get-close, I-am-a-superstar-type-of-guy. He is mega talented and I cannot wait for the next album to be released !

I got this cd by a guy from Mallorca, he was selling all his books and records to get some cash to buy his ticket to get back home.
After hearing it ,i felt guilty at first, but now I fell sorry from him, because he lost a treasure,this record is excelent from the first note to the last, you can play it again and again and you get caught for lots of deep and mixed emotions.
it's not the traditional flamenco (like Camaron or Tomatito) that it's hard to digest for non flamenco followers,and neither the pseudo-flamenco of Ottmar Liebert.
I don't know if it is call new flamenco or somenthing else...-honestly i dont care- what i know and i,m shure is that this is music from the soul cooked inside the heart.
I love the guitar in every song,Vicente only puts the exactly amount on each song:-not less,not more-.
The words are delicious, deep and naive, happy and melancolic: "Si es que las palabras se las lleva el aire, que las mias se las lleve hasta tu calle"(if it's true that the wind takes the words away, i hope it takes my words down to your street).
A soon as the first notes start you can close your eyes and feel the heart of Cordoba: the streets,the people,the sounds....

I can't wait to hear more from Vicente.

Vicente Amigo, a man of few words, isn't one who's prone to talk the talk, he just walks the walk and boy what a great CD he has come up with - again!

Write from the first three notes of Tres Notas Para Decir Te Quiero (Three notes to say I love you) through to the final track with the same name as the album title Ciudad de las ideas (City of ideas) we are treated to a veritable musical eperience covering a cohesive range of beautiful compositions, fantastic technique and brilliant arrangements.

The "City of Ideas" is Cordoba, Vicente's adopted home-town, and the influences of this great monument to humanity and vibrant and welcoming city echos throughout these compositions.

I met Vicente many years ago (around 1989) when he was a relatively unknown guitarist on the scene, over ten years on, Vicente has lost none of his honesty, professonalism or sensitivity, and has matured to become a great artist and a truly oustanding ambassador for Cordoba and humanity.

Few Flamenco guitarists escape my ears. This musical form is so beautiful. As a resident mucisican and guest performer over the past several years with Eva Encinas' world class Festival Flamenco Internacional productions here in Albuquerque, I have had the honor and priviledge of performing with some of the very best, including Los Dos hermanos Jimenez, Chuscales, Paco Jimeno, Santiago Lara and many others.

The first time I heard this album I was absolutely blown away!! Not just because the compositions are fresh, brilliantly espressive and vibrant, but the arangements and performances by the accompanying artists are extraordinary in every respect. The cuts are masterfully performed and the emotion, passion and fire of this rare masterpiece traverse the entire spectrum of the feelings and emotion that ARE the very heart and soul of Flamenco. (One side note: to my disappointment, the trumpet player on Limon de Nata is not identified, but the what he/she plays on this track is brilliant and completely unique!!) Flamenco and jazz. It's what I've always believed should and can be done.

Vicente's firey expressivo and warm chordal textures pull you in as if you were right there in the studio performance.

To be sure, El Maestro, Vicente Amigo's performance on every cut is pure genius. The order of the compositions are arranged such that when you have listened to the entire CD, you feel as if you just experienced an incredible musical journey. And when it's over, you want to go there again...

Get it while you can because it's very hard to find. This CD in particular is truly a timeless treasure.

Vicente's brilliant first outing, De Mi Corazon al Aire, is an outstanding application of modern sensibility and techniques to strict flamenco forms. It shows just how far flamenco can go and still be flamenco. Whereas this album, Vivencias, steps outside flamenco on several tracks and strays into muzak territory in the process.

Vicente is always worth listening to - check him out on Tauromagia, a flamenco classic - but I hope he doesn't wander off too far into flaccid Liebert territory.

Vicente Amigo is the definite heir to the Paco de Lucia throne. If you want to hear 'real' flamenco guitar, this is a must-have recording, along with Vicente's first CD 'De Mi Corazon Al Aire'.

If you actually own any CD's by Ottmar Liebert/Gypsy Kings/Strunz and Farah, do yourself a favor and learn what actual flamenco music is all about. The aforementioned artists are flamenco posers, imitators at best.

I've bought this CD being in Spain (Cordoba- Vicente's homeland) in 1999 and I fell in love immediately after listening to it for the first time. I keep on listening to it whenever I can and enjoy as in my first listening. The concert is great, Vicente's guitar sounds great, Leo Brower does a magnificent job with this orchestra and Miguel Bose reads the poems superbly! It worths its cost completely!!!! I'm from Spanish origin so I feel this kind of music deeply. Aranjuez concert and De Falla's works are among my favourites.

Vicente Amigo is the most technically accomplished guitarist I have ever heard. Whilst purists of flamenco may find some of his work a little too jazz influenced, his solo pieces are truly astounding and some of the orchestrated pieces take your breath away with their beauty esp 'Poeta En El Puerto'. He is a gifted and worthy successor to Paco de Lucia.

Technically marvelous, Amigo has a darker, more haunting sound than Paco DeLucia. Brower's arrangements have made his playing brighter on this recording, but don't get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with Amigo's sound on his other albums. If you don't know of him, check him out. If you love flamenco guitar you will not be disappointed. You must hear "City of Ideas" as well.

Honestly, I wish reviewers like Artin Karapet would keep their worthless blanket BS statements to themselves. Oscar de Lucia is (was) a very talented guitarist (listen to Fuerte Y Caudal - exquisite), but not based on Luzia alone. If you love him that much, please don't waste review time trashing other artists who are just a talented, and maybe even more so. Have you listened to Geraldo Nunez? Your might change your mind.
Poeta is a lovely cd, worthy of repeated listenings. Though I prefer Vicente's solo work, this it truly a fine album in the vein of Concerto de Aranguez. The other reviewers - the SANE ones - are right on the money.

Paco de Lucia is better than every body else in the world. He is the best and he will always be the best, no one will ever replace him......

I admire Vicente Amigo a lot since I heard him playing about four years ago. Although he is not already as big as Paco de Lucía, I think he will be soon.

I prefer slow "toques" in flamenco and cut #3 (Mezquita-soleá) is really beautiful. It includes major ends when ending the main theme then turning to minor which make this soleá really special.

Cut #4 (Tangos del arco bajo-tangos) is also beautiful. Including the bandoneón in some cuts like "Un momento en e sonido" (taranta) is also very interesting. Combination of his guitar, percussion and bandoneón is colorful and they complement very well each other.

Cordobes guitarist Vicente Amigo is that seamless marriage of virtuosity, passion, and the vision to take flamenco into the 21st century while preserving its time-honored roots in the Arabic-influenced land of Andalucia. On Un Momento en el Sonido, his original compositions draw on several styles of flamenco, including rumbas, bulerias, zapateados, farrucas, and tarrantas.

The flowing songs are a marvel of technical skill made to sound effortless, while balancing tradition with duende. The opening track Dempati is electrifying, with lightning-fast guitar and palmas. Campo de la Verdad is slow and meditative, offering the listener a chance to catch his/her breath before bounding into the intense Mezquita, or sliding into the Parisian twilight of Bolero a Marcos, with its waltzing concertina. The bonus track is a remixed Bolero a Marcos arranged for strings, and sounds like the closing credits to some artsy French film (and is totally appropriate for romantic dinners at home!).

The focus, appropriately enough, is on Vicente, and vocals take a restrained back seat to his guitar. Once again, Vicente amazes with his sheer level of technicality and understanding of the material while gently turning it in new directions that are accessible to all audiences, from seasoned flamenco pros to newcomers. The tracks on Un Momento en el Sonido flow together beautifully and carry the listener through a range of popular flamenco styles. It's a pity that he's not better known in the US (he won the 2001 Latin Grammy for best Flamenco album Ciudad de Las Ideas), but hopefully that will change as his work continues to evolve and gain recognition abroad.

this beauty-full flamenco guitar CD marks the return of Vicente Amigo to a simpler & more satisfying production of his incredible talent as one of Flamenco's premier guitarists... the feel of his playing on this disc is makes it some of the best acoustic guitar music you'll ever hear & all thru the recording the listener is consistently treated to the same flowing musical stream of inspired & inviting flamenco virtuosity... this is without a doubt my favorite recording of his playing that often stays in my CD player for hours at a time... Ole Amigo !!!

What comes to mind is what Segovia proclaimed of Williams, "a prince of the [flamenco] guitar has arrived [where Paco de Lucía has reigned]." Amigo's music in this CD is electrifying, complex, and sublimely lyrical, while his guitar technique defies human limits--a smorgasbord of new falsetas, rich counterbeats, picado, alzapúa... Flawless rasgueados in crescendo suddenly awaken you like you just had a double shot of espresso, only to find yourself soothed by hypnotizing arpeggios in the next few measures. There is an interesting fusion of sounds at times--drums in Track 1, and bandoneón in several others. You will need to be in an occasional contemplative mood to appreciate Track 9. Track 5 and especially its bonus version Track 10 can be used to unwind while you sip down on Tempranillo.

relative to his fist cd 'de mi corazan al aire' this is not in the same sublime light; but this is very good music non the less. it lack the original spontaneous sound that i know he is capable of, of which there are wispy hints. its as if he is trying to play, instead of letting it FLOW; a delicate art. i hope he returnith to the melodic spontaneous sound that places him right at the top of his art in a realm of his own. my star rating is more based on his own potential rather than comparing it to that of other artists.

This is music to listen to over and over, enjoying the passion, the inspired vocals, and the beauty of the melodies, Simply great guitar work here. I'm a world music fan and don't have background in flamenco. I was first exposed to the artist through music video on the WorldLink satellite channel. I think that two of the works on this album made it to video stage. Now I'm buying all of Vicente's CDs, and enjoy them all. The CD notes and lovely poetry here make it clear that the aritist felt something special with this music, and I feel it too. I can't count how many times I've listened to this. Bonus - this is very calming during intense traffic...its "medicine".

Vicente Amigo really gets the job done here. Technically unbelievable, solid compas, intruiging. My son and I were admiring the tune Tata, it is as close to heavy metal as flamenco can go. With the interplay of palmas, guitar and cante, WOW! If you like Paco, you will like this albumn - no, check that, you will love it!

I own several flamenco CDs, and "Ciudad de las Ideas" has to be the one I listen to the least. "La Tarde es Caramelo" and "Ojos de la Alhambra" are the only songs on this CD worth listening to. The rest of this CD is painfully corny and boring-- especially the first track, the last track, and the title track. I like Vicente Amigo, but this is his worst album. Most of the songs just don't have the hearty essence of real flamenco. For some good, innovative flamenco, I highly recommend the music of Gerardo Nunez and the albums "Jucal", "Calima", "Andando el Tiempo", and "La Nueva Escuela de la Guitarra Flamenca."

Music, like movies, should be evaluated on the basis of their intent... Vicente Amigo has come out with a very good collection of romantic rumba background music, a kind of flamenco lite. He's an excellent guitarist, and he has succeeded. Any serious musicologists (or wannabes) who compare this with Sabicas or "pure" flamenco (whatever that is) are barking up the wrong tree. By the way, the "real" gypsies I know listen to Cher, Prince, and Mexican hiphop, along with all the rumberos on the radio. Sabicas, Camaron, and Elvis are wonderful, but they are dead. So, wake up and smell the jasmine.

This CD by Vicente Amigo is the most soulful flamenco guitar playing I have ever heard. The compositions are wonderful,and the recording is excellent, What else can I say ?other than it's a masterpiece. A must have CD. Bravo Vicente you are a musical avatar and genius.

i picked this up a few years ago, this being the first flamenco type cd i've own. i am no professor on flemenco music, but till this day i have not found anything that measures up; and i always keep an ear open to anything of such status.

amigo is a matador on the fretboard, playing in the ring of his feeling. he has unique lascivious style incorporating elements of grace, speed, strength, stillness and melliflous melody that leave one breathless wondering the source of its creativity. many flamenco guitarists get carried away displaying their dexterity and virtuoso on the strings of the guitar with furious forceful flurries of notes - which is fine, playing with flame is much part of the spanish way (flame/flamenco) and musicians must display skill - but loose sight of qualities such as melody, the light delicate playing touch and pockets of silence - complementing speed and power. vincent utilises this balance with grace. he lets emotion be his guide; its the backdrop behind the spontaneous motion of the music; combined with most supernal guitar skills, this is rare indeed, this IS potent.

sadly this work seems to be a one off, unequalled in his other cd's; maybe due to its inherent complexity of this work; i can't blame him; but then i hope he has not been influences by the media mincing machines that tend to slice up original talant that made someone someone in the first place and force them to produce stuff that apeals to the masses. amigo stop! take a step backwards. i pray i hear this genius of yours exercised at full stretch again someday. go go amigo.

I was first exposed to Vicente Amigo several years ago through this work in Spanish Alejandro Sanz's hit "Corazon Partio" where he glided through the Spanish guitar effortlessly like a God. I later picked up this album and to me it's become a standard that equates to great Flamenco music any day. Born in Sevilla, and raised in Cordoba, he was winning international awards from an early age and playing alongside legends such as Paco de Lucia, Keith Richards and Bob Dylan as early as 1992.

"De Mi Corazon Al Aire" marked Vicente Amigo's debut, and the start of a career that has resulted in five more productions so far. The album is packed with awe inspiring moments that balance musical prodigy with touching melodies that transport you to the heart of Andalucia with no effort, with an occasional moorish touch here and there. It's hard to pick a favorite, but if forced to do it, it'd be "Morente". When I listen to it, I can close my eyes and picture myself sitting in a bar in one of Spain's pueblos blancos. Quite simply, a sonic masterpiece not to be overlooked.

Vicente Amigo was taught by the great Manolo Sanlucar. His sounds are similar to Tomatito and Sanlucar however he has his own sound/style that is distinctive. There are complex arrangements in his work yet it is so elegantly put together that it really doesn't take away the feel and he is not a racer such as (paco delucia). This is one of my favorite flamenco cds and is his best. It is a shame his other cds fall short to this great masterpiece!! (I'll still buy anything of his that comes out)

On the way from Granada to Cordoba, a Spanish friend put this into her cassette player and blew me away. An even newer way of playing real flamenco than Paco de Lucia.

Behind the apparent free-form abandon of flamenco are strictly laid down rhythmic and harmonic patterns that the guitar has to obey so that the dancers can do their stuff. It's playing within those strict rules and bending them that make it so exciting.

With this CD, the young Vicente Amigo (experienced accompanist to others) took centre stage for the first time and showed how to play real flamenco in a modern way. Not the limp, chug-along pseudo flamenco-lite of Ottmar Liebert, but rather astonishing virtuosity combined with power and tenderness.

The production compresses the sound somewhat, giving it a lot of edge, plus there are some studio tricks like echoes. But what you hear is basically just Vicente and his acoustic guitar. And unlike all those amped-up guitar heroes, this is a guy who could sound just as amazing in a power cut.

This one is highly recommended, even for easy listening aficionados - there's hardly any of that hard-edged flamenco singing. Also highly recommended, "Tauromagia" by Manolo Sanlucar, featuring an even younger Vicente.

I'm from Spanish origin so I feel this kind of music deeply. Aranjuez concert and De Falla's works are among my favourites.

Vicente Amigo is the most technically accomplished guitarist I have ever heard. Whilst purists of flamenco may find some of his work a little too jazz influenced, his solo pieces are truly astounding and some of the orchestrated pieces take your breath away with their beauty esp 'Poeta En El Puerto'. He is a gifted and worthy successor to Paco de Lucia.

Technically marvelous, Amigo has a darker, more haunting sound than Paco DeLucia. Brower's arrangements have made his playing brighter on this recording, but don't get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with Amigo's sound on his other albums. If you don't know of him, check him out. If you love flamenco guitar you will not be disappointed. You must hear "City of Ideas" as well.

Honestly, I wish reviewers like Artin Karapet would keep their worthless blanket BS statements to themselves. Oscar de Lucia is (was) a very talented guitarist (listen to Fuerte Y Caudal - exquisite), but not based on Luzia alone. If you love him that much, please don't waste review time trashing other artists who are just a talented, and maybe even more so. Have you listened to Geraldo Nunez? Your might change your mind.
Poeta is a lovely cd, worthy of repeated listenings. Though I prefer Vicente's solo work, this it truly a fine album in the vein of Concerto de Aranguez. The other reviewers - the SANE ones - are right on the money.

Paco de Lucia is better than every body else in the world. He is the best and he will always be the best, no one will ever replace him......
