Vienna Teng

Finally a singer-songwriter that has something more than high school love lyrics to throw at us. Loved this album. Vienna very much reminds of another new SS I recently discovered:Arrica Rose. She too in her new CD La La Lost gives us creative, thoughtful and meaningful lyrics- somethimes a bit quirky, arranged with some lovely and diverse melodies.Look her up as well.

Was very pleasantly surprised at how good this album was. Hate when you buy an album and only like two or three songs are worth anything. Just about every song is good. Check it out.

I went to Madeleine Peyroux concert two years ago, and Vienna was opening for Madeleine Peyroux. I have never heard about her before that. She completely captivated the audience. This was the first time I saw a performance that was as good (if not better) as the recording. She was perfect; I am sure I wasn't the only one who had goosebumps. So when Madeleine Peyroux appeared with her new album, I had to leave not to spoil the mood.

I do prefer this her album over the previous two ones because she sounds more original on "Dreaming through the noise".

There's nothing particularly wrong with Vienna Teng's third album, but that's not to say that there's anything special about it either. What made here an instant hit, in my mind, is what she has abandoned to produce this sleek release: her scaled-down, straightforward, home-made style of music that managed to tug at your heartstrings.

"Dreaming Through The Noise" is well-produced, melodic and full of wonderful guest musicians who take up quite a bit of the total content of the CD. Vienna's magic lies in her extraordinary voice and honest lyrics. She is ironically surrounded by too much Noise in this album for her true gifts to come forward, and she ends up coming across like any number of other singers out there: catchy and unobtrusive but ultimately bland.

No disrespect is meant to her in this, as she is a brilliant singer with a great story, but my feeling is that this release isn't her best work.

i can't say anything different from other reviews...i just think this woman is special...i picked up warm stangers and waking hour yesterday....never having heard vienna before...i've seen reccomendations for her in my profiles...lately, i've just been buying stuff on " blind faith, " sometimes not even listening to the artist beforehand...sometimes, you get burned this way...but you also get some plesant surprises...she reminds me of a less quirky tori amos....ben folds, though, not as melancholic ( in my humble opinion ) there's no point in listing my favorites from this, because you can listen to this straight through...i won't dissect it....vienna's voice has a dove-like beauty that is profound....i'm trying to teach myself popular piano...i envy ms. tengs easy mastery of the instrument....listen to this and waking hour back to back for the best moments ever experienced....

i literally ran into vienna teng by sheer accident at our local library... i have a sheer knack for randomly finding virtually unknown female singers, so when i found this album, i decided id give it a try, and im glad i did... this album is so breathtakingly beautiful, and raw, open and honest... i love how personal the lyrical content is, and how much one can gather and relate to on it... i love most of this cd.... so pleasant and relaxing to listen to, plus vienna teng has such a beautiful clear voice... im a huge tori amos fan, but in no way should anyone try to compare them by any means... they both have each their own individual styles, so shame on all those who compare the two!!... i loved this album so much, i went out and bought her two other albums, but by far in my own personal opinion, i think this by far is her best album... if you are like me, and always searching for unknown female artists, then take a chance on this beautiful album, you wont be dissapointed.......

What a find!!! I'm a huge Tori Amos and Alison Krauss fan and this girl is right up there with them. Her voice is as naturally pretty as Tori's but I can also actually understand the words and the lyrics are much more intelligent. She has the same kind of pure and natural voice as Alison, minus the vibrato, making it sound even more pure. Her piano accompaniment is so perfect, it's as if the songs have always existed. And, she seems like the kind of girl you'd actually want to bring home to meet your mom. What a package. Very marketable, I'd say.

I was late in discovering Teng's gifts, but what gifts they are! Her CD "Waking Hour" is the most astonishing female-vocalist/instrumentalist CD I have heard in years.

You have to hear this.

but this is where it started, the genesis of her creative power....you could call vienna's sound champer pop,...a lot of the songs she wrote when she was in her teens....i figured the songs to autobiographical and they definately qualify as confessional....i like ms. teng's piano playing....it is very understated and accomplished.....my favorites are soon love soon, the tower, daughter, say uncle, and unwritten letter....stick to vienna's stuff on virt records....her album on rounder, is slick and over produced...it doesn't feel as personal....

I am old and entrenched in my musical preferences. Songs MUST be meaningful and should tell a story! I haven't purchased an album produced after the Nixon era. It looks like I will be branching out a bit. I heard parts of the song 'Between' at the close of of an episode of The Deadliest Catch. I couldn't get the song out of my mind. It took trips to 5 record stores in the Seattle area before I finally found Ms. Tengs album Waking Hour. I love it. The lyrics are outstanding, thoughtful, introspective, and thought provoking. Every song is a keeper. In a time when most lyrics are bubble gum crap and the vocalists are of marginal talent Ms. Teng exhibits a depth of talent and sensitivity that makes her music thoroughly enjoyable. I will purchase more of her music.

When I first heard Vienna Teng (on NPR) I learned what it means to be enraptured by a voice. She allows herself to be vulnerable as she sings with unpretentious honesty about truths that all people hold privately in their hearts. If you are a fan of middle-eastern music, you'll hear echos of Oum Kalthoum's tender intensity. Fans of Nick Drake will hear his humility. If you studied physics, you're in for a very special treat: the song "Gravity" uses planetary mechanics as a metaphor for romantic love.

Seldom am I haunted by music as pleasantly as I am by Vienna's ageless and angelic voice. She has a very clean and poetic style that is honest and peaceful. The piano works well with her voice too.
