The Glastonbury Festival 2008 tickets had its slowest sales volume in many years; the organizers blamed previous year’s mud.

Michael Eavis, the Glastonbury Festival founder, said yesterday that by the evening they’ve sold around 100,000 tickets, despite selling out within hours in previous years.

Many people are saying that this year’s line-up is also to blame for the slow volume of ticket sales. Jay-Z is headlining the Somerset event which hasn’t been widely welcome.

Mr Eavis said:

It’s a nice little sale for a Sunday morning. And that’s without them even knowing who’s playing - we haven’t announced our line-up yet. In previous years all tickets were sold out within a couple of hours, but I think three years of mud may have taken their toll, but even so, 100,000 isn’t bad.

Last year, 177,000 people attended the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts and more than 700 acts played.

The festival has been criticised in recent years for becoming more commercialised and changing the target audience, brought on by new strict ticketing measures. Glastonbury is also facing growing competition from smaller festivals, such as the Connect Festival, at Inveraray Castle, launched last year.

Morrisey Receives Racism Apology

April 3, 2008

The singer Morrisey has accepted an official apology over claims that he was a racist and a hypocrite.

The former frontman of the Smiths couldn’t appear at London’s High Court for the settlement because he is currently recording in Los Angeles.

Morrisey had initiated court action over an article by David Quantick published in World Magazine. Morrisey’s solicitor, John Reid, stated in court that the closing paragraph could have been construed to imply that he was a racist or that he was a hypocrite seeing that his parents are migrant themselves.

The publishers Development Hell and editor Mark Ellen did not intend to describe Mr Morrisey as racist, according to Mr Reid. The publishers’ solicitors, Caroline Kean, offered their sincere apologies to Morrisey; The publishers have also dissociated themselves from such allegations.

A statement was read outside court on behalf of Morrisey:

I am obviously delighted with this victory and the clearing of my name in public where it is loud and clear for all to hear.

Nevertheless Morrisey have expressed that will continue the legal battle against the NME, which released similar allegations in their December 2007 edition. He added:

I will now continue to pursue my legal action against the NME and its editor until they do the same.

Björk to Perform in Israel This Year

March 26, 2008

BjörkThe Icelandic star will return to Israel on July 31 to perform in Tel Aviv or Ramat Gan. Björk will perform a one time gig in the centre of Israel. It has been twelve years since the Icelandic singer last performed in Israel.

Björk’s representatives have reached an agreement with Shuki Weiss, an Israeli producer. The location for the concert is yet to be confirmed.

The Tel Aviv’s Hayarkon Park and the Ramat Gan Stadium are two potential candidates to host the Israeli leg of Björk’s world tour following the release of “Volta“, Björk’s latest album.

“Volta” is composed by a mixture of melodic sounds, accompanied by a larger band and a choir of Icelandic girls. This album has reached the top 10 best selling albums in the US. Björk said:

I feel “Volta” live is much better than the album, so “Volta” the album is almost like the rehearsal before the tour. The tour is where it all comes alive.

“Volta” world tour is being extremely successful and expected to last about 18 months. One euro of each ticket sold will be donated to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The Smashing Pumpkins Sue Virgin

March 25, 2008

The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins yesterday have started a lawsuit against their record label, Virgin, for using their name in promotional deals illegally.

The band stated during a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court that Virgin’s use of their name in “Pepsi Stuff” promotion with Amazon and Pepsi threatens their reputation for “artistic integrity”.

In an official declaration, the Smashing Pumpkins stated: “We have worked hard for over two decades to accumulate a considerable amount of goodwill in the eyes of the public”.

Virgin has been the Smashing Pumpkin’s record label for seventeen years. And, according to Smashing Pumpkins, only had the right to sell digital downloads of their songs.

The Smashing Pumpkins members said that they would “never grant authority to Virgin, or any other entity,” to use their name on promotional material for other purposes.

The lawsuit requires that Virgin pay out with the revenue generated by the promotion, and also asks for a sanction against using the Smashing Pumpkins’ name or music in the future.
