The singer Morrisey has accepted an official apology over claims that he was a racist and a hypocrite.

The former frontman of the Smiths couldn’t appear at London’s High Court for the settlement because he is currently recording in Los Angeles.

Morrisey had initiated court action over an article by David Quantick published in World Magazine. Morrisey’s solicitor, John Reid, stated in court that the closing paragraph could have been construed to imply that he was a racist or that he was a hypocrite seeing that his parents are migrant themselves.

The publishers Development Hell and editor Mark Ellen did not intend to describe Mr Morrisey as racist, according to Mr Reid. The publishers’ solicitors, Caroline Kean, offered their sincere apologies to Morrisey; The publishers have also dissociated themselves from such allegations.

A statement was read outside court on behalf of Morrisey:

I am obviously delighted with this victory and the clearing of my name in public where it is loud and clear for all to hear.

Nevertheless Morrisey have expressed that will continue the legal battle against the NME, which released similar allegations in their December 2007 edition. He added:

I will now continue to pursue my legal action against the NME and its editor until they do the same.
